lol They don't have to get over it, they just won't play it. That's money lost which means its incredibly stupid on the part of Star Vault. Personally, I love 1st person, and am finally glad to have an mmorpg where i can play 1st person AND see my weapons, hands, etc. But i can't really understand why people can't have a choice. It's not like people asking for a PvE server on a PvP-centric game, its a client-side feature that is a cakewalk to turn on and yields no gameplay advantage in PvP.

Yes, you DO have a choice: play the game, which equals money gained for SV, or don't play the game, which won't impact my gameplay one bit
I totally agree with this and if it was up to me I wouldn't include a 3rd PV either. The reason being that of course you get a great gameplay advantage from using 3rd PV - so basically anyone that wants to succeed in the game is forced to use 3rd PV or be at a huge gameplay disadvantage and 1st PV would be unusable in any pvp situation, killing the 1st person atmosphere of the game. I think not having the option of 3rd PV is definitely the right choice and hope they don't change it.

I call their bluff ... and seriously doubt that it will be such a gamebreaker for so many. Most are merely whining in hope that it will be addressed before launch and taking a fierce stance while not realizing that they are actually being grumpy traditionalists in making such a fuss about this (as if there have been no rpg games with properly implemented first person view) ... and my guess is that most of them haven't read much about the developers' take on MO and what they aim to achieve with this game.
You, as a game designer, should be familiar with the importance of your basic concept or formula, and how a game becomes a better game if you are aware of that concept and your unique selling points, throughout the development cycle and implement them the best you can rather than compromising that concept to address a bigger crowd and by that becoming yet another 'jack of all trades and master in none'.
In that sense you fail to see that the choice for a first-person-only setup is a direct consequence from their aim to create a game with 'realistic experience' at it's very heart. And they obviously considered freedom in choosing your camera angle as a necessary sacrifice to stay true to their main concept;
If you are hellbent as a developer in wanting players to experience the world and the things they do in that world from a realistic viewpoint, for instance in order to achieve more excitement and immersion in combat situations and by that avoiding the thing we are so familiar with: a superficial, zoomed out, high angled view of our screens filled with brightly coloured numbers ...
... if you want to avoid having to implement 'stealth' as a series of powerfull spells rather than promoting players to use genuine cunning, patience and the terrain to their best advantage, and if you want to achieve maximum realism and immersion by looking through your characters eyes in order to simulate actually BEING your character to the best extent, rather than steering it as a puppeteer, ... limiting us to first person was the hard, but wise choice to make and I applaud them for that. They have shown us that they are staying true to their formula and are able to make sacrifices for that.
It seems there is a lesson to learn here for you as a game designer, my friend.

Immersion is a feeling and has more to do with how the game mechanics and the game world was made than the POV. Making a design decision based on what you as a developer feels is more immersed is bad, and its even worse to say that one or the other is more immersive.
MO did not make the decision of FPV only because they felt it is more immersive, but the fact that their game mechanics and game world was built around it.
MO is created around First-Person View and based on the premise that you see the world through your characters eyes. There will be no option to view yourself in the world in Third-Person View if we by any means can avoid it - the only exception so far being when mounted (and even then, certain actions and/or weapons will be FPV-only).
Your "paperdoll" (in the Character Window) will most probably be in 3D with the ability to pan, rotate and zoom. Adding the ability to see emotes on your character in that window might be an idea, as you probably want to check how they look like on your own character before performing them in public. (But this might depend on how we will handle reflections (like mirrors).)
"Resting" will therefore not be shown through a magic camera hovering above your cosy D&D Fantasy Camp(TM) (although a nice touch in other games?). Putting up a camp is one thing, but "resting" (meaning sleeping/dozing) will probably involve sitting or laying down with your eyes closed and hearing only muffled sound for as long as you dare, praying you have chosen a good spot and that you're not in for an ambush or a sudden attack.
Update: Mounted Combat has been updated and is done in FPV.

Don't want to nitpick but I didn't say that. I wrote: "... the choice for a first-person-only setup is a direct consequence from their aim to create a game with 'realistic experience' at it's very heart" which is pretty much fully backed up by your post. In that sense, immersion by means of realism IS one of the big things they aim for. And no matter what the third person brigade thinks, first person DOES offer a more realistic viewpoint than the zoom ranges most third person games allow, peripheral vision supported or not (having a widescreen monitor helps somewhat here, I suppose).
So, ... "the fact that their game mechanics and game world has been built around first person view" has some well thought out reasons. They didn't exactly cast a die which ended up on 'first person' when they started working on the game. First person is a logical choice considering MO's premise of being a highly realistic mmo. Just like most other game mechanics are derived from that core principle. And my conclusion being that the devs are obviously doing a hell of a job in making sure that the game's core values aren't compromised.
p.s. I didn't want to give the impression that I think they would still have a choice to change it at this stage in developement, you are right in saying that the game has already been build around it for a great deal in that regard.
To all you "gamers" out there who will not play a game because there is no 3rd person view are not gamers anyways. The MO devs and community don't want your type in game and are by no means caring of your opinion. The fact that you won't play a game that "could" be great with great features just because of the point of view are worthless "gamers" anyways and should stick to their themepark carbear games like WoW or lotro. For us real gamers who enjoy games for gameplay purposes will enjoy and leave all you kiddies in the dust playing wow. To the people saying that FPV isn't immersive enough and that they have to see their char. in 3rd person are retarded. You must not think that your life is immersive either since you can't zoom out and see yourself from behind. You are all ridiculous, besides most games do have a character screen where you can see what your char. looks like. Plus there are reflections as seen in the video and there will maybe be mirrors in your home that you can use. Just stupid statement like "not ever, ever gonna play it cause it's FPV" makes me realize that there are only a small mass of gamers who want a real gaming experience. Well fine we don't need you 13yr. old kids playing MO and screwing that community up anyways so good riddance and enjoy your cookie cutter hello kitty online and WoW.
Don't do that hail2thathief. We don't need more of the elitistic fanatical fanboy mentality. Just look at Darkfall. That kind of thinking, that "real gamers prefer this and that and you should all go back to wow" is just BS, and bred a core group of absolute assholes on the darkfall forums.
MO has a great and open community right now, so I'm hoping comments like yours wont be seen in the future. I'm hoping you yourself can understand why.

Don't really care what you think sir. I'm not even being a fanboy about the game, it could easily fail just like DFO. I'm merely commenting on the fact that people won't even give a game a chance just because it's FPV. It's comment like those that shouldn't see the light of day. i don't play games in fpv, mainly for the fact that it's not really fpv, you can't see your hands or the horse you're riding etc. etc. i am hoping the game delivers on what they are promising cause if not then it will be another DFO and no one wants that. I'm just flaming lame people that don't have an open mind or can't try something new and possibly miss out on what could be a great game because they want to see their character running and what not. But yes I am an asshole and have no problem admitting that but I'm not gonna sit around and read post after post of just close minded bs. So sorry if I struck a cord, that's what i wanted to do.

Please read what Zulu wrote again. Your type of comments aren't welcome in the MO community. There many ways to express your disagreement other than a flame.

The red statements are kind of funny.
I understand what you are both saying but at the same time we don't need people on here flaming the game merely for the fact that it's FPV. I am a smartass more than i am an asshole and it's hard to tell over text on a forum, so i know i come off like an asshole. Sorry if it's a problem and but it's just my nature i guess, born and raised a smartass so can't help it most times.
However, someone needs to say something considering half the posts seem to be flaming a game merely on the type of view they are using. No one has played the game yet so no reason to flame it...yet. The game might suck for all we no but there is no reasoning to not play a game just because there's only fpv when it could possibly be a great game with great graphics and gameplay.
Well that's it i guess and i hope the game becomes a success and some of these people can change thier mind and try it out.

Honestly I love fpv if it is done where you can see weapons, this is what I think most mmos are missing. I have only played one other mmo that had fpv with weapons shown and that was EQ. I am waiting on this title and I personaly hate pvp but I will so pvp on this game.
Have the developers of Mortal Online considered an over-the-shoulder view that cannot zoom out? I would play Mortal Online if that were included. The first-person only view is the only thing stopping me from getting excited about this game. Edit: A good example of a view similar to this would be the one found in Armored Core games. You still cannot see anything behind you, but you can see your character in action. This isn't only for aesthetics however. Depth perception with melee weapons in first-person view is very poor, and your field of view is cut in thirds when in a first person view. A natural view angle is better achieved with this over-the-shoulder view.
No comments, refutations? Honestly, I see no reason why an over-the-shoulder view shouldn't exist.
Originally posted by egotrip Yeah i don't mind either i found out the 3rd person view in Oblivion by accident when i first played it but still played the game throughout in 1st person view since it was more functional that way, the same goes for MO but i just don't see the reason why there shouldn't be a 3rd person view.........................the character model(s) are there, the world is also so that makes the 3rd person view only 1 click of a button away
There is no 3rd person view, period, because, as an example, they want you to be able to sneak up to someone and stab them in the back, where in 3rd person you would see that sneak coming, in 1st person you have to actually look around yourself to see what's going on and to be aware of your environment.
Want to get a good feel for this try the age of chivalry halflife2 mod, its free, and is the same general concept as far as combat goes
I doubt they will, there are a lot of people who like the idea of the fpv, all things considered they might give some thought to doing a 3rd person for social emotes or something. Yet, I don't see that happening, the game was made with fpv in mind and it is made for people who like that idea. Like I said I am waiting on this title simply because of the fpv, especialy if they add in proper colision detection for rocks and so on that it makes it hard for people to gank you from a long way off with a bow. While I will concide it is a bit of a turn off, go and play elder scrolls oblivion and you will get a feel for the game Imo.
I am tired of all you carebears wanting to play 3rd person.
Third person would ruin the game, how can you sneak up and stab someone in the back if you can see them coming in the first place? Or a party could easily spot you after downing a rare monster like a dragon if you could be in third person.
First person will make Mortal Online more immersed then any mmo ever created. And as people have stated before if you really want to see yourself that bad go stand over a rive or lake all day.
Stop bitching, if you dont like FPV and you dont want to play this game for that reason then go play WoW. Real gamers want this game and I know I have been waiting for a game like Mortal Online for quite a while.

You make it painfully clear that you have no idea how an over-the-shoulder third person view with no zoom-out works. Either that, or you're just a troll.
Complaints about Third Person Do they apply to an Over-The Shoulder view?
Can't sneak up on anyone! No. You can see your upper back, not what is behind you.
Unrealistic view frame! No. In fact it becomes MORE realistic.
No immersion! No. I still feel like my character with an Over-The-Shoulder view.
It's just narcissism! No. Honestly, it has almost nothing to do with that.
I like depth perception, myself.
I'm a troll talking shit to people I don't even know! Yes, yes you are.
Sorry, their will not be 3rd person in MO. FPV is built into the game mechanics. You will get blinded, sweat in your eyes (blotchy water effect), blood sprayed in your face, and vision obscured by spells.
In most MMOs and RPGs (most are 3rd person), you get some sort of debuff when blinded, in order to SIMULATE the effect. Mabey a -2 to hit or a percentage miss chance. In MO there wont be that "simulated blindness", there will be a REAL blindness. Your screen will be obscured. Having these vision effects on your screen in 3rd person just doesn't translate well.
So much of thier game's design is focused around the FPV, you will not see them revert and add a 3rd person. You will be able to view your character in the Inventory screen, or in front of a mirrored surface.
There are plenty of 3rd person games out there for you people who can't live without it. Leave MO alone. Starvault know's its a niche market, and they are workin' it.

^THIS is the reason why there won't be an overshoulder view either.
MO WILL be 1st person only, guys. The devs have stated it again and again and they gave very good reasons for making that decision.
Which is the end of this discussion, really.
If you can't live with that or aren't willing to try, please don't.

I have never played a game in 3rd person. It's first person or nothing for me. 3rd person totally ruins immersion. I just wish some MMO would come up with a way to incorporate peripheral vision.
After hearing Henrik (CEO) talk on Aegis imperium mumble voice chat i feel really confident that no matter if its first or third person that the game will be amazing.
You people who like third person WoW cliche gaming please do not pick up this game and/or talk on these or mortals forums about "having options to change the point of view" because its not going happen ever. just like the OP said.

Agreed because all they have to do is make the first person view optional and more people will be happy to play.

-cheers
Has DarthRaiden cloned himself ??
Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*
Honestly I love fpv if it is done where you can see weapons, this is what I think most mmos are missing. I have only played one other mmo that had fpv with weapons shown and that was EQ. I am waiting on this title and I personaly hate pvp but I will so pvp on this game.
No comments, refutations? Honestly, I see no reason why an over-the-shoulder view shouldn't exist.
H A D O K E N !
Wow thats a turn off for me.. I bet they will change it if this is the consensus
H A D O K E N !

Make a difference!
Please refer to the above post.
They will NEVER change it... The devs of MO do not care what the consensus is because they want to create there own game.
And how the hell is it a turn off? have you ever even played an MMO first person?
lol They don't have to get over it, they just won't play it.
Forcing 1st person only = money lost, reduction in overall player base may affect gameplay (empty worlds suck)
Giving a choice = money gained, no gameplay impact
Agreed because all they have to do is make the first person view optional and more people will be happy to play.
