if you don't enjoy the delayed gratification of very long term projects, you will probably never enjoy the game.
This is the best statement I've ever seen posted by an EvE supporter. You cannot get more accurate than this.
I'm sure if your willing to put MONTHS or YEARS of time into getting the skills necessary to even compete effectively with the long term players 1v1, then you will enjoy this game. Nothing else will get you close to the power of their combat abilities.
Saying a person can get into PVP early in EvE is accurate. Saying a person can even come close to the power of a long time player quickly is simply a lie. Anyone who has ever played this game knows this. Saying a person can enjoy EvE early is true for a VERY small set of the population.
So if a person is willing to invest an ENORMOUS amount of time into letting their toon learn the abilities, they "may" enjoy this game.
If waiting extremely long amounts of time and doing monotonous tasks are your cup of tea, this is definately your game. If you have only short amounts of time to play, you may still enjoy EvE but I seriously doubt it.

Enkindu, this made me laugh! Too bad it's so sad. But the poster here actually pays lip service to agreeing with one of your statements, only as a means of trotting out (probably) his favorite EVE misconception, that you have to train for months or even years to be effective at PvP.
I guess really, this is just a subtle attempt at trolling.
I won't bother answering because I am sure that this has been answered enough that anyone who is interested in the game already knows the anser by heart, God knows it's been repeated in response to posts like this one often enough.
You guys are so condescending, it's like your a parody of yourselves at this point. The constant insinuations that people who don't like Eve are simply less intelligent than people who do are laughable. About every fourth post someone has to tell us how Eve is different than every other MMO, and quite frankly, we just aren't intelligent or mature enough to enjoy it. We should all go back to WoW, and every other MMO that is a carbon copy of WoW. All shall bow to the power of the mighty cult of Eve. Did I just about cover all your talking points?

Hahahahahahahaha! When would ANYONE on these forums ever say something like that!
You must be new here...
Actually, I've seen that response frequently in the eve forum. It's hard to respond that way, however, when people support their opinions with factually inaccurate and anecdotal evidence.
By the way that "escapist" interview in salvatoris' sig is pretty funny. They should show that everywhere, it would help scare off the kind of people that really don't belong in eve in the first place (and hopefully reduce the number of confused whiners that post on forums like this).
NOOOO!!! I don't want them to leave! What will I use for target practice when testing new weapons? If you knew how many newbies wander out into 0.0 space with a starter frigate...its like getting candy for Halloween.
Originally posted by DeathTouch I've read a few post today about Eve and i've posted a few posts now. What im reading confuses me, i see people post the game sucks(thats my opinion as well) and i see people flame them back and tell them it does not. i see people post that they played the whole trial time and said it was boring( again after my 6 months of play totalled over the years, i agree) some again has to flame them and tell them they are dumb, stupid wrong, are trolls, blah blah blah blah blah... what i havent read from the ones that love this game so much is, why they love this game so much. what about killings ships is so fun? what is it that you like so much that you have to treat others badly when they give their opinion, biased or not. this game blows hard and thats my opinion and nothing you can say will change that. if i didnt have friends playing the game when i played, this game would have been worse then watching paint dry.

This pretty much explains your whole issue. The reason why EVE community might seem hostile and not accepting 'other oppinion' is that those 'oppinions' are fundamentaly wrong. You can read posts about the game sucking by someone who does not even know what rigs are and how they are used and so on... You can figure out the level of understanding the game of such posters and competency to make any valuable, objective review.
Play the game for a week or 2 years but get the clue how the game is designed and what actualy makes EVE living universe as it is, get to know all mechanics of the part of field you prefer. Then come back and say: EVE is great but I prefer mindless PVE grind or I like territory wars but POS sieges are extremely tiring and boring or I like small gang warfare but CCP killed it by last ship changes, etc.
I am very sure no one will object anything. You know the game and you know why you don't like it, fair enough. You only make yourself to look like an idiot/troll by complaining about something you have no clue of, and you get treated like that.
To all those that didn't get it, we explained to the OP what was wrong and what he should have done to improve his experience. Anyone thinking they know how EVE works from the trail is basically deluding themselves because it does take at least a month to get thru the basic missions and understandings of certain aspects that run EVE.

I personally offered you 20 mil isk to use in game to try some new ships fittings out because you were convinced that ISK gave people such an advantage. You refused my offer.
I recommended that you get together with one of the talented PvPers that frequent this forum to learn some of the finer points of the game. You said that you weren't interested.
You stated reasons that you didn't like the game. Many of us here tried to help you understand why we like the game. You have never been interested in this.
The amount of time you've spent learning the game is relatively tiny. Eve is a game of years- as we've explained to you before, if you don't enjoy the delayed gratification of very long term projects, you will probably never enjoy the game.
For the 937th time: WE ACCEPT AND RESPECT THAT YOU DO NOT ENJOY EVE.
What we do not accept and respect is the fact that you keep coming back to this forum for the sole purpose of making (misinformed) negative posts about the game. It is pretty unfair to someone that might be interested in all eve has to offer if they decide whether or not to try the game base on your sweeping judgements (which are in turn based on a few short weeks in the game).
You are making yourself look a little sad to be honest. You have actually posted a link to an eve bashing review in your signature.. you've spent hours making eve bashing posts in this forum.. all this effort to crusade against a game that you don't like.
To the rest of us, it looks like you are trying to have your revenge on eve for something. If I don't like a game, I just quit it and walk away.. I've quit several MMOs that I didn't like for various reasons but I didn't spend weeks camping out in those game forums bashing the games. That's the basis of my "girlfriend" analogy above, and i think it's dead on. You are acting like eve hurt your feelings somehow.
We like eve because it is brutal, huge, and complicated. I takes perserverence and a thick skin to get anywhere in the game... and many goals in the game take YEARS to accomplish. For me this is great- because most games get boring for me after I've "solved" the big problems in the game... I've never been bored in eve because I've always got multiple long, medium, and short-term goals I'm working toward.
Right after college I spent two years living out of a car and climbing mountains pretty much full time. Climbing, like eve, isn't for everyone. If I took someone out and they said "hey, I like climbing except for the risk, the exposure, and being up in the mountains all the time," there really wouldn't be any intelligent response to give them except "climbing isn't for everyone."
If you don't like eve essentially for what the game is, then what is the point of your constant negative posting about it? Are you looking for some kind of validation? What gives?
Why not try to salvage some self respect and say "hey I guess eve just isn't my thing." I'm pretty sure our response would be "hey man, that's cool.. good luck finding something you like better."

^^ SNAP!
Great post.
Salvatoris is like most gamers nowdays: he wants the game to do everything for him. It's better to sit back and pretend you are actually accomplishing something, when in reality you are doing nothing but pushing a few buttons and clicking the mouse once in a while. Most currrent MMOs are designed like this because game developers discovered the "big" secret -- that since about 2004, gamers have become pretty much stupid and lazy. EVE requires effort -- not something stupid and lazy people can handle.

Every time i played EVE i find stuff i never new. Basically even vets find new stuff once and a while. That's the one thing about EVE that brings back players and keeps those in-game playing, it's a never ending mmo.

Of coarse its a never ending mmo, they want that $, heres a link youll like, EVE has been voted the number 3 most time wasting mmo. digg.com/d1WoHE More than likely a joke, but it is true that people need to really start managing thier time with games like this, or thier going to wake up someday and wonder why did I waste my time argueing about something as trivial as a game. Me I like to argue on forums while I work, best way to waste your time is getting payed.
Meh, from what I have seen in the little EVE I've experienced, it's not really time wasting in EVE. Traveling seems to take the longest... which can be good, because different areas have different economies and there is nice profit to be made if you invest the time in traveling to specific places and such.
that being said, you thought "hey, shuttles sell for less than their material cost, ill build them!" and then decided this means that eve has a shallow ecconomy.
Well, for me, my basic thought would be that shuttles, being probably one of the easiest things to build, and probably highly available as is given that they are SHUTTLES... probably not worth much.

Ive been playing since beta and there is still stuff I learn in Eve all the time. Maybe not every day but atleast once a week. Aspects of the game like POS management is something I really know nothing about. Never had a reason to bother with them myself.

Something to consider: Your arguments will be much more effective if you actually know something about which you are arguing.
Secondly just because the game is in-depth and has many neuances, in no way means that i should expect to have to ask other players how to play. It at the end of the day is a game and games are meant to be fun, fun is not sitting in some space station reading a 16 page dossier on how to play the game.
Point 1: perhaps eve's devs trying to get you to socialise? as without social interaction , EVE is literally nothing.
Point 2: I find it fun sitting in a spacestation doing spreadsheets and whatnot. Does that mean my fun<your fun?
Your opinion is not fact. Neither is mine. These are:
EVE is a primarily social game, and has been built as such.
You compare anything to the first similar thing you encountered.
Most posts on this thread have not insulted people becuase they are conditioned to other games, but have tried to point out gaps in logic. (I play x game, y game is not the same or is unfamiliar therefore Y<X)
Firstly i have to say that i have just within the last 3 or 4 days (can't be 100% as i didnt log on for the last few days) finished my EvE trial. What the OP say's is very true, the gameplay is a kin to a flight simulator only it's emersed in a universe populated by thousands of other flight simulators. The one truelly off putting thing about EvE is the eliteism of the game, to me the whole point of a trial is to entice you into going past said trial onto a paid sub. Yet in EvE it seems you have NO choice but to spend the entire trial doing skill points which means you have no choice but to do the PvE quests. Back to the eliteism issue as i feel i digressed somewhat from my point. It seems that the community within EvE are rather too smug given that they already know all the in's and out's of the game, if you ask a simple question you can expect to be scorned upon and spoken down to like your utterly stupid for not already knowing everything in game. Also the idea that i "can't" play and indeed enjoy the game without someone else showing me how to is both preposterous and insulting. This is why i find EvE's comunity too eliteist and erm down right rude. Just my OPINION based on my Experiences both in game and in the forums.
Peace
I disagree strongly with the people being elitist, I had very good help from the community when I started, perhaps minmatar starter corp is better then others
The fact that you need to learn the game, and the easiest way is to ask others, is not preposterous or insulting imho.
Well firstly if you don't see the elitist nature of seasoned EvE players, read back through this threads posts, it's litterally soaked in the "i know something you don't know" condescending tones i have come to expect from EvE players (not all but most). Secondly just because the game is in-depth and has many neuances, in no way means that i should expect to have to ask other players how to play. It at the end of the day is a game and games are meant to be fun, fun is not sitting in some space station reading a 16 page dossier on how to play the game.
so -- don't play. it IS as simple as that -- don't play.
is that harsh?
no, what's harsh is that if it's not a well known fact, it becomes well known by the multitude of replies in a given thread -- eve is going to require RESEARCH. that means reading. that doesn't mean reading a 16 page dossier on how to play, it means reading 160+ pages on how to play.
if you want to just jump in and play - go for it. i did. i rushed thru the tutorial and, honestly, the biggest problem i had was clicking with the wrong button and instead of turning, it only turned my view and would pop back to the original view as soon as i let go of the mouse button.
i engage in every form of carebear and pvp activity available in the game. as i would expand my activities, i would read "dossiers" during down time at work.
eve is, by design, a harsh game, a harsh world.
is it REALLY difficult to understand/play? no, any kid with interest can play it (and a number do). it's not a hold-your-hand mmo by any stretch of the imagination and that's where it loses a lot of people. a lot of people DON'T want to have to think for themselves. a lot of people that DO like thinking for themselves -- get tired of the "i need direction" crowd. join a huge corp/alliance - they'll be more than happy to tell you what to do.
but, and make no mistake here -- this game is not conducive to a whiny, crybaby population -- if that's how players are INgame, where they have to behave cuz they'll ruin their "ingame rep" -- why would someone expect players to be NICER out of game? on an anonymous forum, no less. especially if someone comes at them with a gripey/negative attitude.
people can say it's elitist all they want. REGARDLESS of those people's "opinions" -- they are WRONG. yes, opinions can be, and often are WRONG.
eve isn't elitist, some of the stupidest people in the world play eve. some of the most base people in the world play eve. i honestly wouldn't be surprised if there were mafia who are sci-fi fans, that play eve.
eve is HARSH. like i said, by DESIGN eve is harsh. that's not elitist, that's masochist, it's also sadistic. there's also lots of "carebear" types. but, whatever, opine that it's "elitist". that makes a lot of sense, to an outsider, that has no clue about anything in eve. and that's fine. but it gets old hearing these uniformed opinions about this and that.
whatever.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
was that many of the more advanced items/ships were listed that you couldnt be on the trial to use them. which for me is a pet pieve, if you want someone to trial your game, why limit it?
Because a trial account hanging around near a gate means people are scouting using disposable trail accounts.
Limiting the gear limits the extra pewpew that this alt would provide.
Because a trial account trained for hauling means people are solo or small group mining.
Limiting the ships mean they have to pony up some ISK or RL Money to have the advantage of a hauler
Etc etc etc....
Mostly though, EVE players are smarter than everyone else ever, and have worked out every possible exploit.
If you give a computer to a young kid, he will say this is boring. Why? because they don't know what the computer is cabable of. Eve is no different, its completly boring until you learn what its cabable of. Theres a reason why eve is still standing 9 years later, you just have to dig deeper to find the reason why.

6 months? I've been playing since 2006 and I still learn something new just about every day.
^^ SNAP!
Great post.

6 months? I've been playing since 2006 and I still learn something new just about every day.

Its space... not a love seat. Takes time dang it.
that being said, you thought "hey, shuttles sell for less than their material cost, ill build them!" and then decided this means that eve has a shallow ecconomy.
Well, for me, my basic thought would be that shuttles, being probably one of the easiest things to build, and probably highly available as is given that they are SHUTTLES... probably not worth much.
6 months? I've been playing since 2006 and I still learn something new just about every day.
Ive been playing since beta and there is still stuff I learn in Eve all the time. Maybe not every day but atleast once a week. Aspects of the game like POS management is something I really know nothing about. Never had a reason to bother with them myself.
Note to Self: Put this guy on the Do-Not-Hire list.

Something to consider: Your arguments will be much more effective if you actually know something about which you are arguing.
