Wait and see - AoC will die, and DF will live. I predict DF will make something like EVE did.

Beside AoC being on decline, everything you just said is just your predictions. I predict that DF will not fail nor will it be a success. It will stabilise around maybe 30k subs of hardcore fans because of the many issues of the game that was brought up by that review.

MMORPGs have evolved since UO and it doesn't cut it to release a UO like game with an outdated 3D engine and hope it will be a success 10 years after UO was released.

DF has flaws. Alot of them. But claiming that it isn't fun or that combat is flawed somehow, is just plain wrong. I know, because I play DF right now.
I don't care about the grade. He could have given it a 1/10 for my sake. What I care about, is the reasons he gave.

Take a look at the screenshots, and you will see that the hotbars have not been used. Then imagine what a horrible experience WoW would be if you didn't use the hotbars.
Him not using the hotbars is enough proof that he barely played (probably no more than in, die to a goblin, take screenshots, out). And THAT I find unjust.
He didn't try PvP (in a PvP centric game!). Not 1vs1. Not teams. Not sieges. Not ship warfare.
He didn't see the city building and the politics that happens from it.

He hasn't tested a single core feature, save the beginner-PvE.

Well I have played games for 20 years and also been around since UO when it was released and I have also played Darkfall and I think the review is spot on. The combat is terribly poor done and so are many other things brought up in the review. Is my opinion incorrect becuase I played games for only 20 years but you for 32? Oh please...

I put stuff on the hotbar but I still think the controls are horrible. Right click to get in and out of modes, having to activate and unsheathe weapons. Having to activate a spell and then left click to cast it. That is just plain terrible. Awful!

Besides that screenshot doesn't prove anything. Maybe he took them before he setup anything else? Who knows and it is irrelevant because I setup a hotbar and still think the controls are horrible.

Also the only 1v1 PvP I found in the game was when someone was trying to make me red by attacking me once and hoping I would attack him back so he could kill me, after 10 seconds, without penalty. The only other PvP I experienced was roaming maxed out characters on mounts, ganking everyone in the noob zone. Yeah, great fun.

Those other features you speak about takes a very long time to get to and ofcourse most reviewers dont have the time to spend doing all that.

As for core features. I would say UI, gfx, sound and looting system are core features.

If you say GFX and sound is core features, then your "review" makes alot more sense.

And then yes, I would say I am right and you are wrong. When you learn to distinquish between fluff and gameplay, then you can maybe give a credible review.

Graphics and sound are actually very important to a game for many people. That doesn't make them wrong or you right.

I also wouldn't describe Graphics and Sound as fluff, they play a major role in gameplay. If you can not see another character or if it is poorly designed to the point you cant tell it from a rock then you might have a hard time fighting it. If you and every character look exactly the same and your friend asks for help before he is killed and all you can see is a mob of people who look exactly alike how will you help him?

Sound allows you to know whats going on around you in many cases, I'd consider that important.

I played WWII Online for years and you could hear other people walking, that helped me alot because I'd be sniping hiding in a bush and would not be able to see completely around myself because I was in scope. Or even hearing a tank coming so I knew to find cover to keep from being killed. You could hear the sound of bullets wizzing by which was a good indicator to hit the dirt to stay alive.

That "fluff" as you put it is the reason why gamers spend thousands of dollars getting the most up to date systems. To call that irrelevant just proves that you live in the past.

Beside, the gameplay is tighly coupled to UI and controls which also all terrible. So is the simplistic FPS style combat, terrible. Ask any FPS fan to try this games combat and they will by all likelyhood throw the game away in disgust.

Huge lines? You seriously don't believe that, do you?

The fact is that on a regular basis people get fed up with the game and QUIT, so they re-release those spots to "new" players to keep eeking out the $50 up front fee. If there really was demand for the game, they'd be able to put up a few more servers and let the hordes in, but there isn't. It's a small trickle and they are doing the best they can to keep that single server up so they can reap as much cash off the least amount of investment. There aren't huge amounts of new players EVERY time the shop opens are there? There are almost the same amount of players in the game world night after night, even after the shop opens because it's only a handful of people who get to play.

It's also why the game is going to die within a year. Mark my words.

When I went into a city in AoC and had to ZONE to get into a house, I uninstalled in disgust.

Yeah so what? I am not saying AoC is a good MMORPG but seeing from subscription base then for sure it has more subscribers than Darkfall and seeing as subscriber base is the best way to see if a game is a fail or not then AoC is certainly less of a failure than Darkfall.

Will that change? Who knows? But right now the facts are the facts.

AoC saw one of the heftiest declines in MMO history. It saw a small increase recently with the free trial, but it is now again down where it used to be - and declining.

People aren't waiting in huge lines.  There was a ton of interest right before it was released, because players were looking forward to an open beta (play for free).  Today, interest in the game seems relatively low.  There are definitely people interested in it, but not nearly as many as you think.

As of now, it's doubtful there are even 16k total players in the game.  Per Signus (whom I haven't seen post on either the official or mmorpg.com forums for several days), the number was 13k.  Javac estimated that there were 40k total players, but he's way, way off base.  I personally bought the game, went online and did a count of players in the clans and the total was just under 16k.  I've also had verified that the count includes offline players and ex-players.  Since most players that stick with the game are in clans, it's a pretty safe bet that the clan count is a good way to estimate the total player population.  The total population is probably pretty close to Signus' figure using the following formula:

    (~16k Total Clan members) - ex-players + existing non-clan members = Total Player Count

The game doesn't have 40k total players and there aren't "huge lines"of players waiting in the wings.  There are some, but not as many as you think.

Compare that to an MMO, which has a tremendous amount of depth to them as a genre.   To clock in less hours on an MMO than you would a console game, then pass yourself off as a legit reviewer is a disgrace.   I couldn't review any MMO in 9 hours on 2 small pages like this guy did, let alone a sandbox MMO which has even more intricacies than a normal MMO.   I have written a ton of articles about Darkfall as a game, and there are still aspects of it I haven't touched on yet.
This reminds me a few reviews on Gamespot I read where one guy criticized an RPG on the Wii because it did not have Mii support!

The amount of time the reviewer played isn't the issue and I'll prove it.

If, as I've mentioned before, the reviewer played two hours and gave a great score tasos would have kept his mouth shut.  I think everyone could agree with that.

Tasos is using the log in times as a crutch to support his arguement for an unfair low score but if the score was high he wouldn't be bitching over the log in times to support an arguement for a higher score.

Tasos should have kept his mouth shut.

Every proffessional reviewer that reviews games for a living wouldnt give this game more than a 6,and the fact that eurogamer EVEN reviewed it you should be thankful that they even bothered to review this abomination.

Most proffessional gaming sites choose to review Mario Party instead of Darkfall and the one site that has actually reviewed it gave it a 2/10 which is easily one of the worst rates of mmo games in history of video gaming.

There are flash based browser mmos that actually scored higher than darkfall.

As for the AV's business model , we can see how well it is by the way they distribute the game, the market penetration and the fact that they cannot get a signle decent review to sell the game.

Darkfall is the Daikatana of mmos,go crawl out of your parent's basement smell some grass, trees and flowers so you get a reality check.

So Rasputin has gone to the It's great because I say so defendse.   You were talking about AoC declining and Darkfall taking over.  If an AoC person comes in and says that Darkfall will die because they play AoC everyday and they say so will it completely negate your stance?    No.  Because the "That sucks because I say so" Defense hasn't worked since 4th grade.

Face it while Darkfall may have a lot interested.  You can't base anything off their method of selling.  Itd be like if two guys grew watermelons.  One grew 400 one grew 4.  And everyday the guy with 4 sold out and the guy with 400 only sold 350.   Would it make sense for the guy with 4 to proclaim himself the greatest watermelon grower in the world because theres such demand for his that he sells out everyday?

And it not making a profit? How do you know? Do you know AV's business model?

You don't need to know their business model.  It's public knowledge that they've spent at least 11 million Euros in development.I It's also public knowledge that Tasos said in a Greek interview that Aventurine was going to recoup their 11 million development in a year.  There's also the issue of the €20 million convertible bond they issued. Companies issue convertible bonds as a way to raise money.  Whether or not Aventurine was able to raise money through the bond is unknown.  What is known is that Tasos gave a presentation at the Open Coffee meeting in Greece, which is another avenue for raising funds.  So, there's a minimum investment that needs to be recouped, possible investor money that will need to be repaid in either cash or stocks, ongoing vendor fees, expenses, payroll, etc...

Taking all that into consideration, it's unlikely that Darkfall is a financial success.  Let's assume there have been 50k accounts sold @ €42/each.  That's a generous number of accounts, but it's still only €2.1 million. It's good for a quick influx of cash, but hte real money comes from subscriptions.  Assuming a flat 16k total active player accounts (see my previous posts) ;€11,77/month, that's €188.320/month.  If Aventurine can at least maintain that number of players, that will be under €2.3 million in 12 months.  So, in 1 year, assuming those figures, Aventurine will have made under €4.4 million. That's defniitely not enough to cover the minimum initial development costs.  Hopefully they have cash reserves and are making enough to pay monthly expenses.  I'd like to see Darkfall succeed. Unfortunately, I think it was released too soon.  I agree with many that it's essentially a paid beta right now and personally think that may be due, at least in part, to Aventurine needing money.

Your view on this is some what near sighted.  Sports does this a lot, limit the amount of tickets and the demand will be high compared to the amount of tickets avabiable.  Scalpers love it though.....

Im in the game every day, I can see the activity. Thank you for your opinion. NEXT!

Have you been in the game recently and seen the activity? Do you have ANY evidence at ALL?

As for AoC - I clearly stated that it was my prediction. Take it or leave it.

I actually have been in game recently.  It doesn't feel like its growing, yet at the moment it doesn't feel like its shrinking either.  I believe as other people have stated that when people quit they resell those slots.  The one bonus Darkfall has going for it is giving it's community a false representation of activity by basically requiring you to be online at all times botting.
