This whole fiasco is really turning into a great example of the unintended law of cause and effect. By that let's take a second to review:
Random Review Guy writes a negative review of an indy game that caters to a niche market and does not have open sales. Developer questions credibility of Random Review Guy. Second, more respected reviewer, pretty much agrees with Random Review Guy. Discussion/Debate continues into a second day.
So, that's the over simplified version. For a second day now, the reviewer is getting free press from an admittedly niche market that he likely doesn't consider his target audience anyhow. If these are not his target audience, then alienating them does nothing to his readership. Alternately, the overreaction by the developer and fans are likely doing more to secure a larger readership for the reviewer then if they just let it fade away. A secondary beneficiary of this is the EG site. As was mentioned previously, many people hadn't heard about it until yesterday and now, I am sure there membership has spiked. Once those who signed up just to state disagreement are filtered out, they will still likely see a net gain in readership. Finally, the last participant in this whole thing, DF, really doesn't have a way to "win" this. If a second review gives higher marks, it will be torn apart as EG selling out or any other reason. If the review generally agrees with the first, DF gains nothing. If the fans keep crying they will just further alienate potential players and could even drive off some of the existing player base. The continued obsession with this review can be analagous to digging a hole. Eventually, the hole becomes deep enough you can't get out. Maybe that raises a question; What do people hope to gain from attacking the reviewer and his review at this point? It's been picked over and the arguments are just going in circles at this point. So, what is to gain from keeping the review at the top of the page?
Great post. Sums this debacle up nicely. I'll say this, once again, for a game that no one is playing, it sure still generates a lot of discusion. The DF fan posts are pretty amusing to read, even after all this time.
I've been following this game for a while, being interested in it, but having heard too many negative things to be able to just buy it straight out without hearing something about the gameplay. Honestly, I'm glad I waited.
This is the reality of the situation, guys. Many people were on the fence about this game, but it has severely been tilted into 'Do Not Buy'. Not because of the rabidness of the fanboys, or the total lack of credibility to Tasos, but simply because the game isn't ready. Instead of 'levels', you have to grind the skills up, leading to macroing. The looting sounds like an interesting premise, but has turned out to be a chore instead. The economy reliant on players? I've seen too many games which made the same claim and simply led to insular economies with the clans making things for themselves and the global economy was non-existent. That's what is going to happen here. I know it's not going to sway the people into this game, and it shouldn't. If you enjoy it, then enjoy it away. It just doesn't sound like something I want to waste money on.
Finally, on a second note. People play games to have fun. If a game isn't fun in the first couple of hours you play it, then why continue playing it? There are too many other free things to do while bored rather than waste money and time on something you don't enjoy. Game reviewers should be taken with a grain of salt. I never rely on just one review and read several to get an idea of what the game is about. I don't even care about the scores. All this is, is a beleagered game company trying to tear a guy's credibility down. Instead, it's getting the backlash of a bad game trying to show that it's not bad. It might get a couple more people to check it out just to see how bad it is, but in the end, it's just going to reinforce the idea that this is a bad game.
Why are you people still arguing? That reviewer guy has probably already lost his part time job. Making such a bad review on a game lots of people seem to enjoy was not a good idea. Regardless if you love or hate DFO, anyone with half a brain would not be caught defending that guy.We all play MMO's and we know that to see how good an MMO is , it takes playing it for more than 100 hours. Otherwise AoC would have been the MMO to end all MMO's.
LOL..! The reviewer has the full backing of Eurogamer and the Editor said he will have another one done, to see if it matches. Which it will, because Darkfall is simply the worst MMORPG in the last 5-6 years.
This game is sooo shallow and a shell or husk of a real game. It only takes a competent player/reviewer 3 hours to know that Darkfall will NEVER be successful or b fixed.
No matter how much Aventurine works at Darkfall, they have already proven to have an inept and incompetent boss. Tasos has already proven himself as a failure, they day he thought the game was done and started closed beta. He was soo proud of a game that was easily in Alpha stage, that he was trying to tell me it was more complete than most MMORPG are upon release. Right then and there I knew this guy was a retard!
Nothing in Darkfall will be fixed.... How do I know? Because, since January, (when I was in beta), all the problems we complained about then on the beta boards, are still not working and broken. Thats was 5 months ago.
The game has been out 2.5 months. Wake up people... Tasos is nothing but a huge Habitual Lier ..!!
Apparently Red Bedlam sent logs to pczone regarding Ed Zitron giving Roma victor a 8% after just few hours of gameplay as well (to be noted, those who read the PCZONE review say DF review was pretty much copy&paste from his roma victor review)
Then later he reviewed Dreamlords, giving it 17% causing major uproar from Dreamlords fanbase and...you guessed it! Dreamlords devs giving out logs of him barely touching the game! ...shortly after this the guy "disappeared" from PC Zones review crew.
This guy has been caught red handed while writing "reviews" out of his arse three times now...it's miracle anyone gives him any credibility anymore.
So, he gives crappy games crappy reviews?
I fail to see the problem with a reviewer not accepting money from companies to give them good marks... much like IGN, PCZone, GameSpy, so on, so forth do.
Originally posted by kishe DF community has already rebutted ALL his points.
1) The UI *CAN* be hidden 2)you *CAN* move while interacting with npcs 3) NPCs do MUCH more than circle around you 4)if looting takes you over 5 minutes, contact neurologist. 5)strikes in df isn't random 6) Skills doesnt affect your chance to hit, rather your damage
...did I miss anything?
Things his didn't cover: Crafting, PvP, town building, ship building, mounts, warhulks, dungeons, sieges, guild vs guild politics...
The things they rebutted are things that for a seasoned "themepark" MMO player are simply not intuitive. Why should the reviewer spend hours to figure out HOW to do something, or figure out the quirks of bad design and then write his review accordingly? It's ridiculous.
He is writing a review that shows AV in a bad light because after 8 years of development, they came up with this turd of a game and there's absolutely NO POLISH on it. The AI sucks, the UI sucks, the game is not intuitive and unless you're a hardcore Darkfall fan and have followed the problems of people playing from beta, it's not easy to figure out especially if you're used to simplicity like in WOW.
He is a mainstream reviewer writing for a mainstream magazine reviewing a niche game with no polish. What did you want, a 10/10? 2/10 seems just about right.
People playing Darkfall rate if btw 6-8 on a 10 scale.
I've played Darkfall and 2 is a decent score for it. And many old supporters and beta testers agree with this review and the score. Perhaps drop the case?
Latest poll on ratings by ingame players is btw 6-8.
Maybe it's time you realize you didnt like Darkfall but others do.
Writing an unbiased review requires that you cover more than first hour of your gameplay.
He covered: Vaguely the UI, vaguely the starter town, vaguely his first monster encounter and vaguely the first quest he found
What he didn't cover: Crafting, PvP, sieges, guild politics, town building, ships, warhulks, mounts, dungeons and the fact darkfall is getting patched every week
I played lord of the rings online for the tutorial part of it...I wonder if EG would let me review it.
AND for the record, I am not claiming that Darkfall is best game ever, I'm just saying that Ed Zitron is hardly a professional journalist.
Obviously noone understands what an Unbiased Review really is.
Its not whether you like something or dislike it.. its being fair in regards to quality, playability, and accessibility.
For Example (being vague and inbiased): "The UI is confusing, visually unpolished and tough to customize. It took me 15 minutes to set up and become proficient in using the hotbar."
Or theres: "The UI is tough to understand. It isn't as visually pleasing as World of Warcrafts nor is it nearly as accessible or easy to learn."
Whereas one of these clearly speaks about the game in question, and its abilities in itself, the other shows a preference to a different game. Games need to be judged standing on their own two feet, not on a curve with A being the best and Z being the worst thats out there. Each game has its merits when played for what they are, not what they are compared to.
The point I'm trying to make is, the review was just a bad review. If it was made simply to anger the community or to gain popularity, but not created to honestly review a game with integrity, then it did its job famously.
I may not like a game I play, or a food I eat and thats okay. I don't have to like them, especially if I am biased to something I like more for example a comparison of Oblivion to Gothic 3, but I'm not writing a review about them. If I am to write a review I put my bias aside and judge solely on this games merit.
All that being said, Darkfalls review by EuroGamer was laughable. The reviewer has lost all credibility to me, as well as my respect.
You know... it's a reviewers job to tell us if he doesn't like something. There is a huge difference between a reporter and reviewer. he is paid to give his opinion, even if it's negative. I agree with the reviewer that Darkfall deserves a 2/10. You don't agree, that's cool. Maybe if enough people review it, eventually one of them will agree with you. The problem is, this game is irrelevant... it's such an inconsequential, meaningless pile of garbage that most gaming sites won't get around to reviewing it for a long time... if ever. I expect most of the reviews it gets to be pretty rough.
Sure, some gaming sites give the worst games a 5, but Ed Zitron apparently uses the entire scale. It could have been worse, at least he gave it a two. I think the description of what rates a 2/10 from eurogamer is pretty much exactly how i feel about darkfall. It's an ugly, poorly coded mess that should be avoided at all cost. If you waste your money on this collection of bugs and bad textures, at least you can't say Ed didn't try to warn you.

I am sure Ed will lose sleep over his credibility loss with you seeing as how you are obviously too dense to understand what perspective is. Its the same reason your parents tell you a new food tastes like chicken to get you to try it. Mentioning other games is a point of perspective to people who know nothing about Darkfail, but most likeley have played one of the other games cited.
The only thing laughable about the review is the response from Tasos and his cult.

I completely agree with you on all of these points. Darkfall is a complete and utter wreck. I wouldn't play it again if it were free.
Instead of trying to argue agains the many comments that the game "deserved" the score, by people who have never played the game, I'd rather try to make an analogy to help people who perhaps haven't played the game understand.
Lets pretend for a moment.
Darkfall is a sport. We'll say hockey. Not everyone likes hockey. Also we aren't judging whether or not hockey is fun to watch or not. We're judging whether or not its fun to play. Clearly many many people believe hockey is fun to play. Along comes a "reviewer" who decides I'm going to publish my opinion on hockey. This reviewer spends 2 hours "playing" hockey. Most of that time is actually just spent looking at uniforms not even actually playing. He never bothers to find out how to play hockey before hand, he just skates out on the ice. Obviously the people who have played hockey for even a few months have no problem easily beating this person at hockey. After spending a few short shifts trying to play hockey, the "reviewer" decides hockey is a horrible sport. Its hard to understand, and you can't pick up the puck with your hands. That makes it so much harder to get it into the goal. Clearly sports that allow you to use your hands are far superior, play those.
Obviously the thousands of people who have played and play hockey and enjoy the sport, would be quite annoyed by some unskilled whiner who clearly just sucks and doesn't even understand the rules publishing a "major" review that is incredibly negative. I'm only considering it major because for some reason metacritic has decided to use it when rating darkfall.
Ed Zitron, does not right good, has lots of typos, and has tons of factual errors. If you miss the irony in the last line I think your going to have missed a lot. On top of that he makes statements such as:
"It's the emperor's new clothes of 2009: such a marvellous game that only an idiot wouldn't realise the beauty of the gaping holes in its content, its wonky control system, and its seemingly decade-old engine."
By calling people who enjoy the game idiot's, he seems to believe his argument is made correct. Writers and critics of any kind who make statements like that are idiots. Based on past reviews Ed should have very little credibility with anyone. Sadly a good 80% of gamers do not bother too look beyond 2/10 (thats what he gave guitar hero 2 also....) and simply take his opinion, regardless of whether or not its correct, as being fact.

You counter you own argument. Especialy when you say he " does nor right good" Ed only states fact. when talking about idiots and the like.

I have played Darkfall. I do not think that Ed is that far off. The score should be 4 at best. Its not a good game, its not finished, it lacks tons of content. No player skill for PvP, No player choice in toon development, cheating (Macroing), potions mean to much.
I played during beta, I have seen what darkfall has to offer, I am not a carebear, I am a hardcore gamer that enjoy's fun player skilled PvP.
Yes Darkfall is a niche game, not everyone is going to like it. That I understand but do not tell me I never played Darkfall

If that isn't irony please someone explain something that is. LMFAO. Also there's several (I would say at least 5 or so) negative statements he makes about the game that are incorrect about how the game works, including "respawn time", hitting being "random", his complaints of a lack of an "experience system", saying there are multiple servers, his belief that you can't move manage your inventory or anything else. Theres more but these have already been stated.

How much does the fact that he counted "a few DarkFall server" validate his review ?
In Edie-boy we finally have nailed a DF hater. We know now how far such sad persons can go and how not ethically they can act.

Great post. Sums this debacle up nicely. I'll say this, once again, for a game that no one is playing, it sure still generates a lot of discusion. The DF fan posts are pretty amusing to read, even after all this time.

So, he gives crappy games crappy reviews?
I fail to see the problem with a reviewer not accepting money from companies to give them good marks... much like IGN, PCZone, GameSpy, so on, so forth do.
I'm Awesome, Deal With It.
I've played Darkfall and 2 is a decent score for it. And many old supporters and beta testers agree with this review and the score. Perhaps drop the case?
Latest poll on ratings by ingame players is btw 6-8.
Maybe it's time you realize you didnt like Darkfall but others do.

You are using DF forums as a reference? Forums that are WIDELY rumored to DELETING any post/reply/poll/message saying ANYTHING bad about their game?
Then Darkfall got exactly the kind of person to review it as it deserved. An unprofessional journalist for an unfinished game.
Some people may call it Karma..........?!?!
Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
I am sure Ed will lose sleep over his credibility loss with you seeing as how you are obviously too dense to understand what perspective is. Its the same reason your parents tell you a new food tastes like chicken to get you to try it. Mentioning other games is a point of perspective to people who know nothing about Darkfail, but most likeley have played one of the other games cited.
The only thing laughable about the review is the response from Tasos and his cult.
nvm..
I completely agree with you on all of these points. Darkfall is a complete and utter wreck. I wouldn't play it again if it were free.
I would play it for free just to troll it for a couple days and watch the failboi's QQ in chat. Such joy from that.
Basically, Ed Zitron has been attacked by indy devs before because the games he keeps getting assigned to suck.
Roma Victor, 8%. IT DESERVED THIS SCORE. THE GAME IS TERRIBLE, GO PLAY IT AND SEE WHAT I MEAN.
Darkfall, 2/10. IT DESERVED THIS SCORE.
Just because the failbase and the Devs lash out against it doesn't make the score not on par with the game.
He who keeps his cool best wins.

I was very specific in who I was addressing in my post. I never claimed you specifically didn't play the game. Stop attempting to discredit rational arguments by making a straw man argument.
Using the fact he gave two of the biggest POS mmos out there low scores the same as Darkfall doesn't do anything but validate his review even further.

As mentioned before, Ed has reviewed other games that were also very bad, and probably saved the people much money.

How much does the fact that he counted "a few DarkFall server" validate his review ?
In Edie-boy we finally have nailed a DF hater. We know now how far such sad persons can go and how not ethically they can act.
