Apparently Red Bedlam sent logs to pczone regarding Ed Zitron giving Roma victor a 8% after just few hours of gameplay as well (to be noted, those who read the PCZONE review say DF review was pretty much copy&paste from his roma victor review)
Then later he reviewed Dreamlords, giving it 17% causing major uproar from Dreamlords fanbase and...you guessed it! Dreamlords devs giving out logs of him barely touching the game! ...shortly after this the guy "disappeared" from PC Zones review crew.
This guy has been caught red handed while writing "reviews" out of his arse three times now...it's miracle anyone gives him any credibility anymore.

I played Roma Victor and within 24 hours removed it from my hard drive... where is that game now? At least that game is a free download with no monthly fees. It's not trying to pretend to be a major MMORPG and asking $52 to download the game. Aventurine is...
And Dreamlords was an over glorified RTS game that thought they could make up for bad gameplay with awsome graphics.
Darkfall is no different. the game is clearly still in early beta, nothing of what they claimed the game was going to be like, is remotely present and short cuts and cheapness are seen all throughout Darkfall. It clearly is an amature project and no discredit to the people who worked on their tasks, but Tasos is just incompetent.
Darkfall is easily one of the worst game I have ever played. Even though the concept intrigued me, the execution and gameplay are piss-poor. Very deserving of the 2/10 score.
This is actually a very lucid post. I also played Roma Victor. Their claim to fame at the time was a crucifixion of some cheating player. It was amusing enough that I signed up, and it didn't take me very long to walk away.
I have not played Dreamlords, there is a reason for that...
Darkfall. The "community" pre-launch spammed every forum on MMORPG, they spammed, and spammed, and then spammed some more. It was hell on Internetz. They would not go away, no matter how off topic they were with each and every post. They were not even in their own forum.
Now, their game has "released" minus the fact that no one can even think of purchasing it at their leisure. The feature list they proclaimed has been exposed as being quite fake. The hack and slash compared to oblivion is not a compliment. The skill system is basic, and a grind (this has been written everywhere), housing is non-existent. The only thing I do not doubt is the commraderie of players as they zerg a target.
Following this 'community' and the developer in question, all I can think is that we might have a reviewer is actually being honest about his experience. This shouldn't matter to AV since they have such a solid project that was ready for release in 2004. They made it their crusade to defame him, and I trust not a single word they say. They are incapable of fulfilling their feature list, much less more than a single server for their base to play on.
For those stating "you have not played the game!!!" Sorry m8's, I refuse to lurk long enough, or pay $54US in order to play a game that for so long has been claimed feature incomplete, and incompetently run 3 months following "launch". They don't even have the resources to open a second instance of the server. Eurogamer perhaps nailed this one. They should not apologize for refusing another DnL. It is happening right over there, in Greece. ------>
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
I'm sorry, Telre. Your analogy is seriously flawed. Darkfall is an MMO game. The reviewer plays MMO games. So in your analogy Ed would have already been famaliar with ice sports dealing with nets, sticks, and pucks. Honestly, he probably would have enjoyed playing hockey.
Here's a sports analogy for you that fits reality a little better.
Lets say Ed loves American football (WoW) but doesn't care for rugby (UO). He hears about a game starting up that is like rugby... called.. lets say Dugby (Darkfall... obviously).
Now dugby is a lot like rugby only you play in dress shoes, it uses a beach ball instead of pigskin, and you can only play in the rain. Oh, and also when your teams is getting close to scoring there will randomly be a game restart called and you have to start over entirely.
Now... Ed may understand the appeal of rugby, and give it an average review. But a horribly designed and flawed game such as dugby would most likely get a low score because of it's flaws.
I think that's a little more accurate than your hocky analogy.
Oh.. and of course all of the people that love playing dubgy would say that Ed only played for 2 hours so how could he know anything about their precious game!?

My hockey analogy was perfectly acceptable. You're supposition that the game is "broken" (playing ruby in dress shoes), is in no way more correct then my proposed analogy. Darkfall yes clearly is not like football, and Ed seems to only like figure skating based on his reviews. Also I find the argument of Darkfall being "hard to learn" and the like as laughable. Day 1 I had already figured out how just about everything in the game worked (minus a few game rules such as how exactly turning rouge, and how started and player cities worked). Ed complained about the difficulty of a rhythm game, arguably one of the easier types of game to master since it only presents a static challenge.
He clearly did not enjoy his gaming experience, thats fine, and as a reviewer he should state that. But how is it fair that he rated a game that requires a better gamer then someone who has difficultly with guitar hero? The fact that so many people are taking his review as being representative of the game, is a problem. Its not, and although some people who have played, agree its has its problems, I nearly universally seen people who have actually played the game, say it deserves a better review then that. Thats not even talking about the score. His review is simply awful, and really gives an innaccurate picture of the game, regardless of whether its "good" or "bad".
"His review is simply awful, and really gives an innaccurate picture of the game, regardless of whether its "good" or "bad"."
This is the crux of it. To the people saying a review is just an opinion, you're wrong. A review is an opinion based on facts. Reviews express the opinion of the writer while presenting facts about the product. So when Ed writes paragraph after paragraph of incorrect 'facts' about the game, his review loses its credibility. The guy claims there isn't even a tutorial, when there is , and it pops up everytime you start the game. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but a published review is responsible for presenting truthful information only.
Since the rabid darkfall fanboys are going to create a hundred threads on this issue I will start posting the same response on the issue.
First: No one cares so just stop making posts, seriously.
Second: The game does suck, even on here with rabid fanboys giving it 10s (no game ever created really deserves a 10 rating, it just hasn't happened) darkfall still only gets a 6 something rating. So yes it sucks, and the reviewer who didn't have those rabid fanboys upping the rating, gave it a truthfull 2/10. So let's sum up, yes Darkfall sucks.
Obviously noone understands what an Unbiased Review really is. Its not whether you like something or dislike it.. its being fair in regards to quality, playability, and accessibility. For Example (being vague and inbiased): "The UI is confusing, visually unpolished and tough to customize. It took me 15 minutes to set up and become proficient in using the hotbar." Or theres: "The UI is tough to understand. It isn't as visually pleasing as World of Warcrafts nor is it nearly as accessible or easy to learn." Whereas one of these clearly speaks about the game in question, and its abilities in itself, the other shows a preference to a different game. Games need to be judged standing on their own two feet, not on a curve with A being the best and Z being the worst thats out there. Each game has its merits when played for what they are, not what they are compared to. The point I'm trying to make is, the review was just a bad review. If it was made simply to anger the community or to gain popularity, but not created to honestly review a game with integrity, then it did its job famously. I may not like a game I play, or a food I eat and thats okay. I don't have to like them, especially if I am biased to something I like more for example a comparison of Oblivion to Gothic 3, but I'm not writing a review about them. If I am to write a review I put my bias aside and judge solely on this games merit. All that being said, Darkfalls review by EuroGamer was laughable. The reviewer has lost all credibility to me, as well as my respect.
I am sure Ed will lose sleep over his credibility loss with you seeing as how you are obviously too dense to understand what perspective is. Its the same reason your parents tell you a new food tastes like chicken to get you to try it. Mentioning other games is a point of perspective to people who know nothing about Darkfail, but most likeley have played one of the other games cited.
The only thing laughable about the review is the response from Tasos and his cult.
Theres a difference between perspective and bias simple one.
Saying "The UI is reminiscent of the original EQ game" is quite different then saying "The UI pales in comparison to LOTRO." One is biased, can you pick the correct answer? I'll wait......
I'm not saying the review didn't deserve a 2, but his "review" didn't cover some key aspects of the game. I don't play darkfall, but wheres all the information about crafting, skills, player interaction, groups, PVP, etc? He barely touched on some of those things, and didn't touch on any of the others...
The difference between this guy and when your parents are telling you to try a new food is simply that after you try the food, you aren't going to write a professional review about it, nor would anyone want you to as you wouldn't be in a position to do so. When you do write a review about food, you take in all aspects of the meal, including preparation time, presentation, taste, texture, smell as well as everything that encompasses the atmosphere of the restaurant you chose.
I just feel bad for you, you're too blinded by wanting darkfall to fail to see the obvious pitfalls in this review. I may not think Darkfall is the greatest game, but it deserves a fair review, be it good or bad, and this review was sorely unfair.
He re-uses lines, which is hilarious, since his lines are not clever enough to bear repeating.
However, saying he gave Roma Victor an 8% doesn't really help DF's chances because ... frankly, I'd probably give Roma Victor an 8% too.
But if he didn't play the games, then it's fair to say he's a bad reviewer. MMOs have to be played for days in order to get even the basic idea of what they are about.

This is getting even worse. It's like every DarkFall community member has secretly gotten together to destroy one guys review. Darkfall the game may be one hell of a game. It may be the best game ever to come out since Super Mario 3 for NES. But why would you try to deface a guy by saying he gave bad reviews for Roma Victor or Dreamlords. Is this some pun I am just not getting. There is a reason LOTRO is a great game and deserves a 9/10. I don't even play it and I know its a good game. Should DFO have gotten a 2/10 by ED, it's his review, so yes. Why does this make you so angry that one persons opinion is somehow made your life this bad. So bad that you need to deface him with this nonsense. Go get a job at IGN, make a review of 9/10, and stop with this nonsense. Maybe Tasos will give you free game time too. And prove you've played 25 hours and are corect with your review. Would that satisfy you and the masses? Would it? I would love to see you guys grow some chops, drop this subject, and talk about your game. But it must be so fun, that this is all you can talk about. Good day sir, and please, keep proving my point.
Oh why does it matter? Simple, its the emperor's new coat. If someone try to tell us that the emperor's new coat is ... well, the tailor and the fans of the new coat, must jump up in arms. What would they do?
They will declare war against anyone who dare speak the truth. Oh truth hurts, never more so than here.

LOL. The first day I played DFO I thought to myself, "This feels a lot like Roma Victor".

I've played Darkfall and 2 is a decent score for it. And many old supporters and beta testers agree with this review and the score. Perhaps drop the case?
Latest poll on ratings by ingame players is btw 6-8.
Maybe it's time you realize you didnt like Darkfall but others do.
Given the track record of DF and its fans, you can hardly convince a pig with a poll there.
We know you like the game. We also want you to know very few like it. EG tells us how their reviewer feels about the game, and its a 2/10 to the reviewer. You can call it 10/10, so what? The reviewer call it 2/10. No conflict there.
Fact is, the reviewer is gaining more and more credibility, given the way the DF community reacts. Truth hurts, the emperor coat is there no more. The way your kind deal with this, DF community is a laughing stock to gamers outside. Given the way the EG editorial reacts, they shine, they are so much more tactful and mature. Who do you think I will trust? You need a hint?
Why not just go play the game and accept the fact that there is one person on earth who has spoken his mind and gave a 2/10 to the game you claimed to have fun in. There are countless who would give 1/10 or 0/10. That does not affect the gameplay itself, and if DF is fun to you, you need not be here talking.
My guess, after days of laughing off my ass, is this: DF is like dry paint, or dried paint that is falling off. There is nothing in game to do, and no one else to beat each other silly. So you have to play the game of forum control, so as to justify the $50.
This is MY VIEW. You need not agree with, nor adopt it.

Ed is a terrible reviewer. I cannot comment on his review for DF, I haven't played the game and have no intention to do so. I'm a regular reader of PCZone and have suffered Ed for the last couple of years. Thankfully he has left the mag, but unfortunately he still turns up now and again as a freelancer. I still remember his review for PotBS for PCZone. He spent two pages trashing the game and didn't once in his whole review mention the PvP, the core of the game. PCZone had some great heritage in there MMO reviewers. We had great reviewers like Chris Anderson, Paul Presley, Richie Shoemaker (Sci-Fi) and Rhianna Pratchett (Terry's daughter) and unfortunately Ed Zitron is sub par compared to them. I'm sure most of you will be going who the hell are these people but hopefully some of the old PCZone readers will remember them.
yeah i remember them, i think there was another guy to from a few years ago who was also cool, can't remember his name, but i remember once at the front of the mag it had there pictures and what games they are playing at the time etc, well this time it was "what are you getting for xmas" and he put down, " an ounce of weed".
Made me lol.
but your right ed is rubbish, always has been always will be.

fine. done.
what exactly are you trying to do? convince us?
besides, I dont know of another game i should be playing instead, any suggestions?

Your hockey analogy was terrible, because you are not even close to comparing products with any similarities. Hockey as a sport aka NHL has been in existence since 1917 and has underwent numerous rule changes, refinement, etc. It is a well established product that has stood the test of time.
Darkfall is an mmo that is set out to redefine mmos with grandiose promises that is has yet to live up to. The game cannot even be purchased right now for heavens sake. What would make you think it is comparable to something that has over 100 years of heritage behind it?
You can't just pick anything and wrap a comparison around it and claim that it makes a valid comparison. Aweful analogy.

I would bet any amount of money that if Ed Zitron gave Darkfall a positive score there would be no claims of invetigating his activity through server logs. Fans of the game would be cheering his review and posting it all over the web. Pointing to his past reviews of Roma Victor and Dreamlords as proof that he is willing to call a game bad when he thinks it is.
Hell I bet tasos would hire someone to update their webpage just to post the review there for all to see.
Red handed is a pretty strong accusation considering the "facts". For example, does it really take more than what the roma victor team claimed ed zitron played [8 hours] to determine that roma victor was a very troubled game? Does anyone think that game required more time than that to see the issues of the game or that somehow things would have changed if only he had played for 50 hours?

Yeah when I saw the title of this thread I was curious as to see if Ed was a liar..
The games that you gave examples of though were all canceled or just out right horrible.
So your saying a reviewer reviewed games that are in fact horrible and gave them horrible scores...
Both games listed by the OP are complete junk, and have since fallen by the wayside as junk. If those are the games your giving as his low ratings then I say yet again that Zitron is right on the money.

I like DF and everything, and I was a staunch supporter of RV before we figured out that KFR was using it to line his pockets with corp cash, but here's my take on what happened with that review.
Zitron reviews MMORPGs. This means he reviews established and released games. Roma Victor wasnt finished, it looks like shit, and its generally a pile. It got a bad review. Indys simply can't afford to complete a game to major corporate standards (Like Blizzard or SoE) in the timeframe that gamer's interest is in.
In other words, the DF folks could finish the game before releasing it, and lose even more players in the process. Instead, they released an unfinished game (just like RV), and they got a shit review. It isnt unfair. Its the truth. Zitron expected a complete MMORPG, and instead he got a half-finished game. That's the reason behind the bad review.
If you log into WoW for instance, you immediately know the game has quality (not in mechanics, but rather in graphics, compatibility, etc.). If you log into Roma Victor, you know the game has something wrong with it. Hence "This game sucks". Its rather like World War Two Online (Battleground Europe). Anyone who logs into that game will immediately know the game has shit graphics. Anyone logging into DF will see that the game is a little messy.
Anyway, I think reviewers should take the budgets of developers into account before making a review, but when MAJOR titles are scored in the same way, that type of exception isnt possible.

Third: NO ONE CARES THAT HE GAVE YOU A 2/10
Crappy game. There's a reason there is only 1 review on it.
WTF are you talking about, sound to me like his reviews are SPOT ON..!

LOL. Yes, convince me with a poll that exists on the game's website. No bias there...
Sounds like something Charlie Brooker would do.

Ok, so we like it, many dont like it.
fine. done.
what exactly are you trying to do? convince us?
besides, I dont know of another game i should be playing instead, any suggestions?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Please do not respond to me
I am doing exactly what you are doing, writing a post
WTF are you talking about, sound to me like his reviews are SPOT ON..!

Yeah when I saw the title of this thread I was curious as to see if Ed was a liar..
The games that you gave examples of though were all canceled or just out right horrible.
So your saying a reviewer reviewed games that are in fact horrible and gave them horrible scores...
Good!
