Look here all. Think about it for a moment. This hitched on part time Eurogamer reviewer spent 3 hours and 33 minutes in an MMO, an MMO!! and that was making NINE characters in that time. So out of that 3 hours of making characters and running around a starting area gives you enough experience to write a damn review? Seriously, this is just not acceptable by any standards. If I were the managing editor of that site, I would tear down that piecemeal review, get my money back and place an apology to the public and the developer. This is for any MMO out there that gets a review in this amount of time. Its a standard for ALL sites to play an MMO for months, not hours before typing out a review. I do feel sorry for the Dev's in this case. Lastly, lets just all admit it here. If you like this MMO, ( Or any MMO for that matter ), you will play it. If you do not like it you will move on and find something more entertaining and worth you time and money. I wish the Dev team of Darkfall success, and I hope that other independant Dev's out there to drive on even through all the heat and flames.
There really is nothing to think about, I took part in closed beta until the games release, clocking up far more than a few hours. For what it's worth I found the review in question was accurate, if a little hostile, however, the salient facts were all correct; the ui is extremely poor, the skill system sucks, poor inventory management, incredibly dull graphics, repetitive combat, grinding is nothing but a chore and so the list goes on and on and on. The only thing the reviewer is guilty of is adding a little too much dramatic flair and being overly aggressive.
During Beta, I, like many others, posted thread after thread of well constructed criticisms and arguments as to why Darkfall was nowhere near ready and asking for its release to be delayed, every one of them was deleted without exception. Furthermore, Tasos even went so far as to claim the posters in question were probably working for another gaming company looking to discredit the game, or a troll with no interest in actually testing, before promptly cancelling the testers accounts.
All throughout beta, Tasos lied to the general public, with exaggerated claims that the title was feature complete more than 6 months before release, while telling testers, that large parts of the game were simply deactivated to facilitate load testing; both claims are now revealed in all their glory for the world to see.
For my part, I am laughing my ass off, I predicted this is exactly what would happen; the game would start to receive bad reviews, and Tasos would twist and squirm with ever more exaggerated excuses, Tasos and aventurine are simply reaping what they have sown for the last 6 years; and the fallout is far more entertaining than DF could ever hope for, roll on more reviews I say.
Oh before I forget; given Tasos' seemingly impressive display of the games logging system, recording all in game events past and present; why then, do they claim to customers they cannot track and do anything about complaints of lost equipment, individual complaints of afk macroers and players exploiting etc? This first game i have seen beg for review.All DF has to do open NA server.Then 1 up,ign,gamespot,etc will review the game.If the game is good then people will see the hachet job eurogamer did. Perhaps. But the reason I waded in (as an example) is that I felt it was pretty revolting that a developer tried to whip up a storm on the internet to put pressure on a game reviewer. Reading Tasos posts EG offered a second review from the off - why didn't he just accept it? He had made his point and has achieved nothing additional since then by going public - there is still going to be a second review. It's just that now - whatever theoutcome of the review, Darkfall will always be rememberd for this episode. The fact that he then continued trying to fight his battles on the internet is not a trend that I find pallatable and I am interested in seeing how it is resolved - hence me being here. Also, in between the name calling the colouring text in yellow and the "is", "isn'ts","is","isnt's" there are some interesting debates - this one for example.
For as much as I backed Darkfall on this I have say I"m bowing out now. I still agree that the review was biased, not much will change that. Eurogamer, however, is doing what's right here and Tasos is spitting in their faces over it. They really had a chance at vindication, and he is passing on it. That leads me to think he isn't confident in his product.

Tasos continues to use piss poor judgement on how to react to a bad review. Everyone will learn from Tasos on what not to do. Now he is reaping the rewards of what happens when you belittle other games, promise a feature complete game, react badly to bad reviews, and have a community that reacts just as badly. If your game goes under Tasos its because of you. Darkfall IMO has alot of potiental that may never come to pass as long as Tasos and Adventurine are is running it.

Lets just say that Tasos is not lieing and that they have logs of everything.
Lets just say that even though Cheating runs rampant, afk macroing is common, and lost items cant be recovered because by Adventurines own statements that they dont have any way of tracking these events; that they DO INFACT keep MOMENT BY MOMENT LOGS OF THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS, EVEN CHAT RECORDS AND ITEM RECORDS.
Lets just say that Eurogamer actually PAYS a man to review but isnt capable of making sure HE ACTUALLY PLAYS THE GAME THEY ARE PAYING HIM TO PLAY AND REVIEW.

I am enjoying this train wreck myself because I feel vindicated for my choice to wait on this game. I was very hopeful for DF for years before release, but very critical of Tasos' lies and deceipt. After the final delay of the game, I posted on the official forums that I would wait 6 months before playing having made the mistake of playing previous MMOs at launch that should still be in beta. Ironically, it seems the game won't be around at the 6 month mark and if it is, I wouldn't dare give 1 cents to this unprofessional company.
To the fans of DF, I suggest you seriously step away from the situation and ask yourself, is this the game promised AND is this the professionalism and PR you want to support. I understand first hand that the MMO landscape is currently disappointing, but supporting crappy games just because they are different is not helping, AND in fact hurting the genre.

I hate responding to my own posts but while trying to look up some information on the game I came across a photo of Tasos - and it suddenly hit me that this is a real person who's life work (well nearly at least) and livelihood is under threat. And on the other side is Ed Zitron - who's professional reputation and livelihood are under threat because he simply expressed an opinion. These are real people and its very easy for me and all of us on all sides to pontificate about the rights and wrongs of the situation on an internet forum, but these real people are probably feeling very stressed at the moment - which is not a fun or nice thing from experience, in fact its horrible and is probably not helped by the internet turning into (to quote The Thick Of It) a room where everybody hates you. We all make mistakes every day - they are just not in the full glare of the worlds MMO community. So Tasos - I'm sorry (you're not reading this I know but I'm into my stride now) - ignore me. Ed - ignore everyone else. Hope it all works out for the best for both of you. Maybe when one or two of the more fanboyish members of the community bugger off I might even try a demo out. (I wont of course - the game only got 2/10 ffs :P)

i'm a little surprised Tasos reacted the way he did to the EG review since it was already very evident to any intelligent reader that firstly, the guy was not being anywhere near objective, and secondly, the guy has zero respect for anything that deviates from the WOW-clone developer's handbook. hell, he even called all players and potential sellers of the game "idiots" and "morons"... this review is about as "professional" as the barely legible scrawlings of half the members of this forum.

Ok, after reading your comments I have to say... Please, explain to me how he "owned" this reviewer?
Lets just say that Tasos is not lieing and that they have logs of everything.
Lets just say that even though Cheating runs rampant, afk macroing is common, and lost items cant be recovered because by Adventurines own statements that they dont have any way of tracking these events; that they DO INFACT keep MOMENT BY MOMENT LOGS OF THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS, EVEN CHAT RECORDS AND ITEM RECORDS.
Lets just say that Eurogamer actually PAYS a man to review but isnt capable of making sure HE ACTUALLY PLAYS THE GAME THEY ARE PAYING HIM TO PLAY AND REVIEW.
Lets just say that this Ed fellow lied completely even though there are quite a few ACTUAL Darkfall players that have agreed with him and even Keen (another reviewer: http://www.keenandgraev.com) said was based on truth if not a bit exagerated.
Saying all of that, Tasos still owned NO ONE. All he did was throw a tantrum like a spoiled brat, and all that has earned him and the company he has become the mouthpiece for is contempt and bad press. Even the people you call "trolls" haven't hurt Adventurine as much as Tasos has with this pathetic outburst. Many people like myself have lost all interest in the game based SOLELY on this reaction. Im not going to give my money to a child.

I am enjoying this train wreck myself because I feel vindicated for my choice to wait on this game. I was very hopeful for DF for years before release, but very critical of Tasos' lies and deceipt. After the final delay of the game, I posted on the official forums that I would wait 6 months before playing having made the mistake of playing previous MMOs at launch that should still be in beta. Ironically, it seems the game won't be around at the 6 month mark and if it is, I wouldn't dare give 1 cents to this unprofessional company.
To the fans of DF, I suggest you seriously step away from the situation and ask yourself, is this the game promised AND is this the professionalism and PR you want to support. I understand first hand that the MMO landscape is currently disappointing, but supporting crappy games just because they are different is not helping, AND in fact hurting the genre.
Perhaps. But the reason I waded in (as an example) is that I felt it was pretty revolting that a developer tried to whip up a storm on the internet to put pressure on a game reviewer. Reading Tasos posts EG offered a second review from the off - why didn't he just accept it? He had made his point and has achieved nothing additional since then by going public - there is still going to be a second review. It's just that now - whatever theoutcome of the review, Darkfall will always be rememberd for this episode. The fact that he then continued trying to fight his battles on the internet is not a trend that I find pallatable and I am interested in seeing how it is resolved - hence me being here. Also, in between the name calling the colouring text in yellow and the "is", "isn'ts","is","isnt's" there are some interesting debates - this one for example.
I hate responding to my own posts but while trying to look up some information on the game I came across a photo of Tasos - and it suddenly hit me that this is a real person who's life work (well nearly at least) and livelihood is under threat. And on the other side is Ed Zitron - who's professional reputation and livelihood are under threat because he simply expressed an opinion. These are real people and its very easy for me and all of us on all sides to pontificate about the rights and wrongs of the situation on an internet forum, but these real people are probably feeling very stressed at the moment - which is not a fun or nice thing from experience, in fact its horrible and is probably not helped by the internet turning into (to quote The Thick Of It) a room where everybody hates you. We all make mistakes every day - they are just not in the full glare of the worlds MMO community. So Tasos - I'm sorry (you're not reading this I know but I'm into my stride now) - ignore me. Ed - ignore everyone else. Hope it all works out for the best for both of you. Maybe when one or two of the more fanboyish members of the community bugger off I might even try a demo out. (I wont of course - the game only got 2/10 ffs :P)
Now, I'm off to wait for my halo in the post and to watch everyone get on just fine in Star Trek or something

i'm a little surprised Tasos reacted the way he did to the EG review since it was already very evident to any intelligent reader that firstly, the guy was not being anywhere near objective, and secondly, the guy has zero respect for anything that deviates from the WOW-clone developer's handbook. hell, he even called all players and potential sellers of the game "idiots" and "morons"... this review is about as "professional" as the barely legible scrawlings of half the members of this forum.
if i were tasos, i would have just called Ed a closed-minded WOW-loving emoraging carebear and gone back to this week's kickass patch. that or tasos has taken his amazing talent for meta-trolling idiots to a whole new level of genius.

I won't play it and I will continue to share my opinions and thoughts, which isn't whining. I respect that you have a different opinion and enjoy the game, but why do you feel so threatened by my opinionpost, that you attempt to belittle me? Are you worried that with each bad opinion of DF the game is closer to being shut down?
