The Biggest letdown for me ever wasn't a game, but a expansion, EQ1 SoL.  This was the point in MMO history where they said "hey lets stop making meaningful fun hard but rewarding games and just make a button mashing EZmode mess"

Too true.  Having played the game since Vanilla WoW I'd have to agree.  The homogenization of classes killed it for me.  You can't change the fundamental roles of classes and expect the game to be the same.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's still a great game, especially now from a commercial point of view.  But for me from a MMO "immersion" and "Traditional Class Role" perspective it fails.

The cancellation of UO2 was my biggest letdown, as it heralded the end of that type of game, and there has not been a game that has come close to the open epicness of UO since it's launch.

The cancellation of Imparitor to a lesser extent as well, esp after WAR.

This thread is interesting in that I had no idea that borked launch after borked launch, people still buy into the hype and think that an MMO developer is going to make something original, or hell, even finished at launch. I generally won't even play an MMO until a year, even two after launch, none of them launch well, none of them are in a state even resembling being finished. Then they have a stigma attached to them for years after, even when they come full circle in the case of Vanguard.

Keep playing MMOs at launch, and keep being disappointed. It's your time and money! :)

Horizons was pretty bad...Had all kinds of hype for years and a soap opera development process, and is still totally broken to this day...

I did the beta and one month of release, and couldn't believe how unfinished and just plain badly executed it was...

So I left, then about 4 or 5 months ago, found I could do a free trial using my original characters...So I did.

It still takes over 8 minutes to log INTO the game, with a 6mbps connection...Everything warps all over in your view, the performance is atrocious, and the game is still just as unfinished and buggy now as it was in beta..They're made a lot of changes...But all quest or character related and all...No changes at all, really, to the performance and engine issues....

It would have been a glorious game, though, if  the original developer had been able to realize what he had envisioned...Unfortunately, that has nothing in common with what released as "Horizons"....

Unfortunately its only a matter of time b4 this game shuts down.

    Playing EVE Online and AOC.
    Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

    Three biggest let downs:

    1) When they cancelled Wish on the last day of beta testing.

    2)  When SWG abandoned it's sandbox style and adopted the Combat "Upgrade" which then degenerated into the NGE.

    3)  When Middle Earth Online abandoned it's sandbox design during alpha to become Lord of the Rings Online.

I am sry but i was soo hyped for this game and when they did nto deliver and had alot of problems getting out the door it was bad, the 1st 2 weeks they aloud peopel to use exploits and ruin the game , they originally said they did nto want toi stagger players into the game so everyone had a fair advantage but it was the opposite. the lack of customer support i think drove the nail in the coffin, but like any mmo it couls turn things around

I have an account from 2002 on the Darkfall forums and followed the game for 7 years, and I agree, Darkfall is most definitely the biggest let down in MMORPG history.

The success of World of Warcraft.

I'm not saying it's a bad game (though it's not for me). Its success, however, has placed a set of blinders on all major MMO development houses and a severe stranglehold on creativity.

I say Darkfall is a huge misstake

A huge map with some mountains and trees where you jump others and takes there mount.

    Too many to list.

AC2 -> for not being another AC with better graphics and improved systems, and then for closing it's doors early

UO -> for the fact that they never made a full out sequal in some way, and for the fact they killed the amazing systems it had at launch due to kids saying it was too brutal.

AoC-> I knew this game would blow so it wasn't a let down to me, but it was clearly  a let down when the truth showed up for all those who said it would be incredible and the next big hit

WAR-> See the reasoning for AoC above, then add in the annoying Paul Barnett who still to this day blames players being dumb for not liking it instead of the game failing in all aspects. Seriously this may be one of the WORST MMOs EVER PUT OUT

Vanguard->The thought process was right, the execution was just down right terrible.

SWG->This game could of been great but it ended up just being sad.

Let me get ready for the future by saying:

SW:toR->People have a huge hype meter built up on this game but it will not be what they think and there will be lots of (yes I know it's bad word to use but it is all that fits) fanboys screaming all over ever forum on the internet after this is released about how it's not what they wanted

Aion->Just because once again everyone keeps using the phrase "WoW Killer" this will be added to the list when that doesn't come close to happening. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I haven't tried it in any form, but it will not be the WoW killer at all.

All good things must come to an end. The same as the wild wood weed.

    "WOW"

    Step 1

Pushing 100,000+ players though 1 Gate.

    Step 2

Making all the work you did (in two years) to get to 60 not worth a cent.

    Step 3

Taking the work you did in two years and giving it away to ppl just starting the game.

    Step 4

    "Mount"..by 35

    Step 5

    motercycle?....need I say more.

You get the point. Please just shot that horse and stop kicking it.

…..it’s a guideline, not a rule, as players we must remember: “It’s a Game”.

Maybe Vanguard. Really can't figure out why it's unappealling but it is, it just seems another same..old, generic mmorpg. It's simularity to WoW in places probably doesn't help matters.

    Horizons: Empire of Istaria.

Years of hype, forced to release a year early by Atari, half the world was empty terrain with no mobs at release, buildable castles and other items on box never made it in game, EU servers were left without updates for over a year, layoffs, server merges, no storyline, 1 vendor in game for any needed components that didn't drop, sold several times to 'new' companies, one company was being investigated by an Attorney General for suppossed credit card fraud, forums locked down during over billings, company changed states to avoid prosecution, back in the hands of one of the original devs and still trying to release their first dungeon.

oh, and they have changed the name of the game to avoid all the bad press.

Yes, as soon as I heard they were cutting half the races, I knew it was going to be bad. I've never wanted to play a game so much and been so disappointed without even trying it.

Yeah, Horizon's should have been good.

Fore me, I still think the biggest let down in MMO history is Vanguard. Man it looked great in preview. Then I got in the beta and then open beta and remember the days before release thinking "holy crap. They are really going to launch it like this!" and they did.

I know lots of people felt pain at the launch of AOC but by my recollection AOC launch was FAR better than Vanguard which was an absolute wreck and had the best hope for a true and diverse sandbox world.

I guess it is sort of closer today but I have not played it is a long, long time.

mm bigest letdown as to be all the game that arent adjustable as low as any 5 year asian game still popular

why ,because even if a game is dead in america or europe it often live and get a second, tird fourth or even fifth life in asia

and often that brings back player from elsewhere.

for me its the biggest letdown in mmo history

game maker should make sure the minimum setting is always low enough to work on say older system

if the game you made cant support older system its bound to fail in long run

now game run from m to s system

and game  should run from  A to Z system

so that the dude with the monster computer can have lush graphic and the one with a older system can enjoy the same game even if he just can have basic 16 bit color

very few game bother with that unless it was design on laptop then often it will work on older computer

game maker should always design their game on laptop first of all .gw did that and that game can run on almost anything today and yesterday, its still one of the best looking game

In my opinion, it has to be D&D online.  Without D&D ever existing, we would not have todays batch of MMOs.  They took an easy IP to make easy money on and turned it into what we have now

I know people like what it is now, but it could have been so much better, I was dissapointed by the final product.

The biggest let down for me was the CU that was introduced in SWG.

SWG orginally wasnt great but i coped and enjoyed it. The CU that was originally discussed sounded great. Unfortunatly SOE/LA didnt deliver. They then carried on ruining a game that should of bee he greatest game to ever grace the mmorpg genre.

I enjoyed vanguard, but it came out the same time vista did, so that prolly had a lot to do with things. People thought 1gb was enough to run vista and play vanguard. Granted there was a lot of bugs at the beginning and I loved the parley system, which was new and fresh. I have often thought of going back but i cannot afford 2 mmos at the same time due to the economy.

That's my 2 cents but it prolly doesnt matter.

biggest fail was darkfail no questin about it but the most let down was lotro since it had a crappy engine crappy music crappy everything nothing like the awesome game i thought it would be

  • archangelptxarchangelptx Member Posts: 91

SWG's CU, which was still somewhat bearable. Then the NGE that killed it. How the masses yearn for Pre-CU... haha.
