Blizzard confirms next project is a new Intellectual Property

Ok, so the next thing from Blizzard isn't Starcraft, or any other existing IP. It's something new.

Has any development team struck gold twice? Not really. Most dev teams that have released a great game in the past have not done so well on their second release. WAR is a good example. DAoC? Loved it. WAR? Not so much.

But nobody has the millions of subscribers Blizzard does with WoW, so maybe they will be the ones to do a great sequel.

I just hope it is traditional Tolkienesque fantasy with a bit more seriousness (but not necessarily somberness) than WOW and ZERO steampunk.  Nothing wrong with a good sandbox EQ-like game with gnomes, elves, humans, barbarians and separate starting areas.

I do hope there is no polluting fantasy with sci-fi, but have my reservations given the computer/techno era we live in.

This is actually pretty amazing news...they're sitting on a pile of their own IP and they decide to go ground up?  Sounds like they are getting a little cocky.

As for Mythic, DAoC and WAR.  Using someone else's IP is always tricky and I don't think anyone other than Turbine (LotRO) has been able to pull it off, and IMHO I think that's just because of the sheer weight of the franchise pushing it along.  Had they been allowed to fully develop an opposing faction I think it would have been able to go toe to toe with WoW.

I am not a fan of wow by any means but i am looking forward to their new mmorpg. Anyone who is anyone knows blizzard makes great games.

If Blizzard makes a SciFi MMO that is of the same quality as WoW, I'm gonna take a sabbatical ;) I would probably still play The Monster, if I hadn't grown thoroughly sick of the fantasy setting. I'm dying for some lasers, spacefights and aliens!

It's pretty smart when you think about it. You don't have to share any revenue. I'm sure LOTRO is paying a bundle to use the Tolkien franchise.

Plus, what game based on an existing franchise has done really well? LOTRO is based on one of the biggest movie franchieses ever, and it's just doing ok. Age of Conan? WAR based on the popular Warhammer IP?

WoW is the biggest kid on the block, and it was built from scratch.

I like how the title involves it being based on a franchise. How many franchises are still not available in an MMO format?

    Mechwarrior comes to mind.

    Not entirely.

But isn't this info kinda old? I know i've been hearing they wouldn't be using an existing IP for their next mmo for awhile, but nonetheless it's intresting. I hope they go with sci-fi/steampunk, a change up from the normal fantasy, and maybe even offer a discount subsctiption if your subscribed to both WoW and this new game. But that's wishing too far ahead :)

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

While WOW will continue to filter through new players for some time, the old player base is growing weary and many would like to see a new fantasy MMO to take WOW's place (for them, that is).  I think a new fantasy MMO is very likely.

Whatever the game is, laser or fireball, I will buy a copy, just b/c its from blizz.  Blizz can at least afford to let me down once.  So far, none of Blizz'g games are weak.

Whatever it is I'm reluctant to try it out. I'm sure the PvE will be the same old boring crap and the PvP will be the same old boring, highly unbalanced crap. Now if by chance they're trying some highly innovative things on both accounts then I will be more inclined to try it.

If it's just WoW 2 then no thanks.

While I couldn't stand WoW, I have never considered Blizzard anything but a first rate company. Their management team has shown an amazing ability to pick and choose elements from other games and mesh them perfectly into something just a notch better. (Of course they also slight some aspects, sadly the ones I am most interested in...but oh well) With the resources they have, if they do a SciFi game it will rock the market. I'm sure I will check it out, even if it is likely to be similar in formula to WoW.

Sure just $40 or so for me usually for any Blizz games, which is trivial money.  I would definitely try it out, and sub if it keeps me interested.

    Not struck gold twice!?!?

UH dude..Starcraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III

All game of the year games listed write there.

Millions of copies sold AND STILL SELL TODAY!

Blizzard is a good company that makes some of the best PC games still to date. They are one of the few companies that actually keep PC gaming alive and well.

I too look forward to this MMO project they are working on while I also wait for Starcraft 2 soon , Diablo 3 which again will also be two great games from blizzard.

Hell they could make WoW 2 and the fanboys still couldnt care less.

what in hells bells do you mean it was built from scratch, the whole warcraft started as a tabletop game then into the warcraft game series for pc, which was a near clone of the warhammer tabletop games,...there was plenty of lore and cander to build wow into an mmo before it was an mmo.

    playing eq2 and two worlds

When we announce our next MMORPG it's not going to be another WOW--we're not a company that tends to tread the same ground," he told British film magazine Empire. "It'll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."  Posted Jan 22, 2007

Okay it might be official right now, but in fact really old news, what would be news is if they actualy announced WHAT their new MMO will be called or be about, so sorry still don't consider this new IP news as news, rather as something old but pure posted to gain attention to those who might have forgotten what Blizzard is/was doing perhaps.

Not really worrying.  Blizz got what it takes to make a succcessful game.  They never failed once, so far.  That speaks volumes.

"the whole warcraft started as a tabletop game then into the warcraft game series for pc,"  WTF?

    Don't think so.

Show us a link or something if I'm wrong, but I have never heard of a WoW tabletop game being available BEFORE the computer game was released and I have been following the tabletop wargame/rpg's since I was twelve, I would defenetly taken notice if there was one.

The odds are on a non-fantasy game since WoW is already a big fantasy hit. So, more than likely it IS some sort of Sci Fi or Steampunk. It's all speculation at this point, but logic dictates they go after the Sci Fi market since they already have the fantasy market.

Indeed. I made a thread the other day about the fact that they probably wouldn't release a fantasy based game for the reason you've stated here.  Imagine an MMO with the community of old EQ with immersion but in a sci fi setting from a new IP. That would be kick ass to me.

  • Shana77Shana77 Member UncommonPosts: 290

I actually don't think its going to be either a sci-fi or a fantasy MMO. Of course its all speculation at this point.

I don't think its a sci-fi MMO because if it was they would have made it World of Starcraft (or starcraft universe). The starcraft franchise is simply to big to ignore, not just in the west but especially in the east (starcraft is still one of the most played games in Korea for example). I just have a feeling that if the developers where making a sci-fi MMO the marketing department wouldn't let them get away with not making it a starcraft brand game.

I also don't think its a fantasy because of a statement that Blizzard made (but i can't find the link) a while back about fantasy MMO's. They said they where suprised that so many of companies still went for fantasy settings in their MMO's. He was genuinly suprised that nearly all of their competitors tried to compete in the same market they already dominated, and asked why not try to be the best game in a new setting. He also indicated in that same interview that Blizzards next MMO would be nothing like World of Warcraft.

So i think its going to be something new. Either a steampunk setting orperhaps a realistic setting or historic setting.

Finally I think Blizzard is doing well not making the mistake of World of Warcraft 2. MMO's are different then normal games. People practically live for years in their MMO worlds, and making a similar world with enhanced graphics can only lead to dissapointment (see EQ2) . A world of Warcraft 2 would only work if significant time has passed, and with significant time I mean about 20 years.
