This is actually pretty amazing news...they're sitting on a pile of their own IP and they decide to go ground up? Sounds like they are getting a little cocky.
As for Mythic, DAoC and WAR. Using someone else's IP is always tricky and I don't think anyone other than Turbine (LotRO) has been able to pull it off, and IMHO I think that's just because of the sheer weight of the franchise pushing it along. Had they been allowed to fully develop an opposing faction I think it would have been able to go toe to toe with WoW.
WoW is the biggest kid on the block, and it was built from scratch.

But isn't this info kinda old? I know i've been hearing they wouldn't be using an existing IP for their next mmo for awhile, but nonetheless it's intresting. I hope they go with sci-fi/steampunk, a change up from the normal fantasy, and maybe even offer a discount subsctiption if your subscribed to both WoW and this new game. Don't forget, that while most video game companies releases half-assed betas, that only run on a handful of systems, Blizzard has been releasing well polished and finished games since the original Warcraft.
Speaking of my own experience, of all the games I've owned and played, I have had by far the least amount of technical problems, gameplay problems, or support issues with Blizzard games, and I really can't say the same for any other company out there. Most other games I play are more difficult to get working properly, have poor support and alot of gameplay issues that make me wonder "what in the hell were they thinking?" I don't play WoW anymore as it no longer appeals to me personally, but I played it for a few years and in my opinion it is a spectacuar game, what other MMO developers could only dream of matching.
I really wonder why forums communities make such a big ruckus about how bad WoW is. It looks pretty successful to me. Maybe they got owned in the face and have led themselves to believe their class is broken or imbalanced. Maybe they're just kids who didn't get their way and so they stretch small issues into absurdities. Maybe they actually believe that causing uproars within forum communities will result in the developers changing the game to their end. Maybe they just don't like it, which is fine but that doesn't mean the game is the complete failure they make it out as.
Every video game company out there, every last one could learn a lesson from Blizzard by releasing finished, polished games, instead of barely working betas. I think Blizzards success is based on the extra months of development time they put in to their products, especially when the developers themselves are passionate gamers.
I have no doubt that whatever their new IP will be, it will be molded into a finely tuned and finished successful game. While I would rather play something lke EQ than WoW, I still have alot of respect for Blizzard because they care enough about their work to actually polish and fine tune their games where most of the other companies out there release crap that barely even logs on. I'd rather play games that don't crash all over the place and aren't full of broken mechanics.

I wonder if it is going to have the same graphics as we see in WOW and Starcraft 2 ? Anyone's guess but I'm shocked they aren't going with Stracraft or Diablo. WOW supposedly has 11 mill playing and showing no signs of a let down but yet they feel the need to make a new mmo. Interesting at best right now.

Clearly you care enough to respond to every post directed at the sentiments you've expressed.
You give WoW and it's fan base way too much credit. Ruining the mmo community? "Rp dies, MMO freedom dies " - those are extremely dramatic statements JGM. The smallish tight knit mmo community blew up with the influx of WoW subscribers and now people like you just automatically assume the mmo genre has been severely damaged. Completely unfounded in my opinion. WoW's success has no bearing on the community that flourishes and thrives in other games and I'm sure in future you'll see the good playerbases form again for up and coming titles. Or maybe they won't, who knows.

They have used 3 IPS for 11 years now, they must get some new if they dont want to end up as EA.
You can only do the same thing for so long, and Blizzard knows it.

This guy is exactly why I tend to avoid FFA PVP games like the plague. In theory these games could be fun, but unfortunatly they attract the worste kind of people.
Did we make a full circle and bashing WoW is considered as oposing opinion again? Heh, interesting.
I can't wait to see more information about the new MMO, combination of WoWs phasing and Diablo 3s mini adventure technologies should make for an intersting and insanely fun experience.
I just hope its not something like the Sims or Free Realms. Blizzard has a populist streak and I want something that's a little more out there. Maybe they'll take a chance since they won't have to bet the company this time.

WoW is the biggest kid on the block, and it was built from scratch.
Not entirely.
But isn't this info kinda old? I know i've been hearing they wouldn't be using an existing IP for their next mmo for awhile, but nonetheless it's intresting. I hope they go with sci-fi/steampunk, a change up from the normal fantasy, and maybe even offer a discount subsctiption if your subscribed to both WoW and this new game. But that's wishing too far ahead

Don't forget, that while most video game companies releases half-assed betas, that only run on a handful of systems, Blizzard has been releasing well polished and finished games since the original Warcraft.
Speaking of my own experience, of all the games I've owned and played, I have had by far the least amount of technical problems, gameplay problems, or support issues with Blizzard games, and I really can't say the same for any other company out there. Most other games I play are more difficult to get working properly, have poor support and alot of gameplay issues that make me wonder "what in the hell were they thinking?" I don't play WoW anymore as it no longer appeals to me personally, but I played it for a few years and in my opinion it is a spectacuar game, what other MMO developers could only dream of matching.
I really wonder why forums communities make such a big ruckus about how bad WoW is. It looks pretty successful to me. Maybe they got owned in the face and have led themselves to believe their class is broken or imbalanced. Maybe they're just kids who didn't get their way and so they stretch small issues into absurdities. Maybe they actually believe that causing uproars within forum communities will result in the developers changing the game to their end. Maybe they just don't like it, which is fine but that doesn't mean the game is the complete failure they make it out as.
Every video game company out there, every last one could learn a lesson from Blizzard by releasing finished, polished games, instead of barely working betas. I think Blizzards success is based on the extra months of development time they put in to their products, especially when the developers themselves are passionate gamers.
I have no doubt that whatever their new IP will be, it will be molded into a finely tuned and finished successful game. While I would rather play something lke EQ than WoW, I still have alot of respect for Blizzard because they care enough about their work to actually polish and fine tune their games where most of the other companies out there release crap that barely even logs on. I'd rather play games that don't crash all over the place and aren't full of broken mechanics.

I wonder if it is going to have the same graphics as we see in WOW and Starcraft 2 ? Anyone's guess but I'm shocked they aren't going with Stracraft or Diablo. WOW supposedly has 11 mill playing and showing no signs of a let down but yet they feel the need to make a new mmo. Interesting at best right now.

You give WoW and it's fan base way too much credit. Ruining the mmo community? "Rp dies, MMO freedom dies " - those are extremely dramatic statements JGM. The smallish tight knit mmo community blew up with the influx of WoW subscribers and now people like you just automatically assume the mmo genre has been severely damaged. Completely unfounded in my opinion. WoW's success has no bearing on the community that flourishes and thrives in other games and I'm sure in future you'll see the good playerbases form again for up and coming titles. Or maybe they won't, who knows.
They have used 3 IPS for 11 years now, they must get some new if they dont want to end up as EA.
You can only do the same thing for so long, and Blizzard knows it.
I doubt this will be a fantasy game close to Wow however, they have already done that so my guess is that it will be a Sci-fi game. Otherwise they will just compete with themselves.

Im sorry to tell you this but I probably know more about WoW then the majority of its fanbois on this forum.
It pissed those guys off that i can totally rip apart WoW and show everyone that the game has more flaws and shitty gameplay than solid features.
So if I want to analyze WoW i could, if you don't like it toss me on block.
To one of the above posters that said im wrong in thinking WoW messed up the genre, Why dont actually open your eyes and look at MMOs before WoW and MMOs after.
It's clear as day the Ezmode crap that WoW handed to the console and FPS/B.net kiddes changed everything.
So yeah I blame blizzard for their lame worthless MMO offering.

This guy is exactly why I tend to avoid FFA PVP games like the plague. In theory these games could be fun, but unfortunatly they attract the worste kind of people.
I just hope its not something like the Sims or Free Realms. Blizzard has a populist streak and I want something that's a little more out there. Maybe they'll take a chance since they won't have to bet the company this time.
