Adult rated MMOs may become a thing of the past for the average Aussie gamer if the Australian Governments internet filter goes ahead. It looks like the purchase of games online and the playing of online games will be included in the illegal and blocked sites. There is already some debate if WoW or Aion would be on that list, so you can bet AoC, MO and DFO would be.
Some news articles here and here and a google news overview here.

Bloody hell, you guys have it worse, than Germany. Seriously, you should go to Russia - they sell GTA4 to 11 years old kids here and no one objects.
EDIT: I thought only China and other communist-like countries blocked all acsess to several sites. Aren't you guys, you know, a democracy?
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
People just don't know, it's getting more press overseas than here, if it goes ahead our internet will be censored to what is considered appropriate for a 15 year old. Apparently Second Life is already on the "Blacklist".
No one buys games in Russia .
A banana republic :P
Currently restarting World of Warcraft
Well in reguards to AoC and DF the aussie government is doing you a favor by blocking them.
In general that sucks bad.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
Set up some sort of underground internet relay network. Hide your data in encapsulated packets or split them up, and then route through a series of private servers in the US. But damn, filters like that would be basically begging people to circumvent them. What a croc of !@#%
"Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun."

Oh noes! I'm a no one! You totally blew my cover!

Using a VPN or proxies will work, sure. The problem is it all adds to our already slow internet speeds not to mention making it more expensive. The filter is so ridiculous it's been shown to be unworkable (and expensive) many times, but they are still pushing ahead.

They might as well try to censor your thoughts. Internet is bloody HUGE. Can they censor everything? Why do they even bother?

I live in Australia and the media is just stupid, an old lady falls over in her house because of some guy walking past her yard and it's on the news, it's stupid.
Censoring stuff because they don't have a rating, wtf, It should just remain unrated and have "Purchase with caution, may be unsuitable for children" or something not just totally bann it. I totally do not agree with whoever is deciding this, it would cause Thousands of gamers literally rioting in the streets.
I can see it now. Government adopts filters and plunges Aussie mmo community into darkness. Said community with nothing but time on their hands now launches a massive denial of service attack on government infrastructure. Government backs down after entire country is thrown into total chaos.
im worreid avout the poor sheep if you can t play mmo's then what are you going to play

These games will not be on "the list" it's already been said that the blocks will apply to games which are not rated in Australia, since the games you have mentioned are quite available on Australin store shelves this means that they are rated and won't be blocked.
What is happening in Australia is quite scary. I am surprised anyone who supported the bills for censoring wasn't voted out in the next election they were in.
I'm not one of those paranoid gun toting anti-gov nuts, but this is a scary precedent for you Aussies and if this happened in my country, I'd give it 1 election before I packed up and left.
The Australian Government has always been like this, they will force a change on us if they believe they are doing it for the greater good of the Australian public. We have the Australian Labour Party as federal right now, but opposition has been known to do the exact same thing; all of course for the greater good of the Australian public.
Not true, it explains it in the articles, WoW and other online games fall into an unrated category, which makes them exempt at the moment from our ratings system, if the filter goes ahead, all it will take is for someone to complain about an online game and it will be added to the list.
This Article explains it well.

That's very strange, I would have thought any game being sold in a store would have to be rated by law. I've never bought a box myself always opting for a digital copy.
Then this www.homepagedaily.com/Pages/article6800-mmos-defy-classification-in-australia.aspx suggests that stores selling unrated MMOs are breaking the law.
Edited to add link
Read the article I just added in the post above yours, explains it well

It loses it's rating as soon as it goes online, as the rating cannot cover what others chat.

Wasn't "Gaming experience may change online" meant to cover what could occur in chat?
Sounds like the government is going for a nanny state. Don't they think the customers are intelligent enough to decide what is good for them?
so they ban games but violent movies which are more graphic are aloud, that makes no sense whatsoever.
The best thing you could do is stop voting for the retards who are passing these laws.
i always thought australia was a democracy, i guess i was wrong.
im sure mel gibson is aloud show his overly exaggerated violent movies though.
I have no objection of censoring internet content as long as it's done within reason.. I have no objection that we do this with music bought at stores, movies you go to see or locations you aren't allowed to go due to age.. It's just the way it is and as a parent I do NOT want my daughter using the interent to circumvent societies rules of censoring.. It's about time people start holding internet information accountable, especially to MINORS.. PERIOD..
I don't understand why people are freaking out about this...
If you REALLY wanted to play an adult game with this filter in place it'll be possible.
Just got to look hard enough
I mean no offense to you when I say this, but it is really a parents responsibilty to monitor what their children are doing on the internet. The only thing that I agree with with this whole internet filtering is that they are trying to prevent access to child pornography; that said it seems that the Australian government is getting a little carried away.
