It is indeed a bit expensive, considering this:

Please also remember that both your possessions and your Characters can be wiped from the server at any moment, and that this may happen several times during the Beta.

I'm still waiting for the price on the Digital Download, but I`m not willing to cough up more than 30E. Like someone said earlier, I really hope this will not turn out to be just another AoC or WAR (or even LOTRO).

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...

lol if you cant tell whats going on .... i asked some friends are they waiting to play mortal online.. they said.. what?

What kind of ideas would you come up with if you had second thoughts..just how good your MMO would do.

  • charlespaynecharlespayne Member UncommonPosts: 381

Think ill just wait for it to be in gameshops and pay 39 pound for it becouse 61 pound for a standered box version is way too much, i wouldent even buy a PS3 or 360 game for that.

First you get more in TheFullLootBag.

And you misuynderstand, there was ONE on eBay sold with Life time sub. there are now 999 that have 1 month free, no freakin vacation package, but all the expensive extras, and a chance at first slot into Beta test.

Complaining you pay $100 for a game, true, but youalso get a art book probably sold for at minimum $29.99, the full loot bag itself $5, and 2 miniatures, which are not cheap, each worth around $12-$19 (x2 and maybe worth more if they are limited release) I bet you could sell the miniatures or paint them and keep as a great look, thats if they are limited run they are wortth more fore collectors.

and we also get a metal box, which will look cool to have around.

I had to laugh at this.

Age of Conan Collector's Edition was over $150 on Ebay at launch, now it is $5 for sale sealed at stores here near my house. It was supposedly sold out too way back then, but they are all over and nobody will buy them even at $5 now.

Another example, I sold my WAR Collector's edition with a metallic minaiture made for Warhammer fans, the artbook, everything, for $4 lol. And I guarantee Mythic made a better quality CE than this no name company did.

These games are worthless after launch unless they are a big success and even then you can't make money off the CE of them, the only way to make money is to sell an account with a high lvl character on it. The actual box and game are worthless.

If the game is a failure, then you have a big box that you have to throw away because you hate staring at money wasted.

    GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

This! Especially within the EU the shipping plus stupid VAT taxes are outragious.

I remember plenty of times, when I was still living in Holland (part of the EU) that when I ordered on Amazon.co.uk that I had to calculate the VAT charges and see if it was still worth it to order stuff there.

Now I moved to Norway last year (outside EU, but still Europe ofcourse) I am not subjected to VAT charges and ordering online on for example amazon.co.uk is suddenly a hell lot cheaper!!

Importing from US to Europe or vise versa is even more expensive. You usually end up paying almost double.

I remember, that I really wanted the Collectors Edition of EverQuest 2 and there was only one online store in the US left that had one, the VAT, Import and shipping fees where around $50-60 dollars, just as expensive as the CE box of EQ2. So I ended up paying around $120 to ship the box to Holland.

So you know. Don't blame the peeps of MO so fast!

    I guess it depends maybe.

We order a lot of art software that comes from various EU countries.. and the shipping has never been anything I would consider "overly expensive".  The only real problem I have is that quite often my bank tries to flag any purchase I make from those countries as some kind of fraud... and I have to call and yell at them.

    /shrug

Oh and yes oddly enough a lot of the type of software I need for work... no american company makes.  That's the only reason I have any relative experience with paying shipping from EU -> US.

Starvault has been very honest with their customers up to this point and they have not done all this work to grab a few subscribers wallets. The price of the game is high but there are many factors that go into this, as others have stated. They also need to stay afloat, so these 'fools' that are paying for this are the ones who really want to see this game succeed, these are the real fans. I live in Sweden, i.e. same country as where the game is developed and shipped from, and I had to pay nearly 800 SEK. That is about 50% more expensive than a regular PC game.

Any reason for why it is so expensive?

Anyway, hope it is worth it or I am done buying games from indie companies (bad experience from Darkfail).

YOU ARE BUYING A PREORDER, as in you are buying the game....... and as a bonus getting to play beta FOR FREE. They are not charging you a monthly fee to play beta (cough darkfall).

Not to mention you are not being hit with any customs fees.

if you think you are paying $115 for beta, please slap yourself in the face for me. You are buying the game, and paying to have it internationally shipped to your house, so shut up.

And your excuse for when you are ordering from sweden and not the collectors edition but the regular boxed one? I can go to webhallen.com and get almost any PC game for half that price so dont give me any BS about the shipping explaining the high cost, inside Sweden it certainly does not.

Also this is NOT a regular pre-order as those are charged when the final game is shipped where as this game is charged right away, making it fundamentally different from a regular pre-order.

Learn from past mistakes.. Cmon, how many games have told us they are the one revolutionary MMO.. and ended up being false
Not saying this one will be that one.. but i just say "We will see..."
So i will wait for people to waste their time on the game.. if the game rocks im sure the price will have to go down eventually.
If it sucks.. :3 i win

If the game rocks, then the price will only go up.  It may be $100 now, but it will probably be 3-4 time that when released.  I got a discount, you will be ripped off.

I'm sure what you mean is that if the game is a success there will be people reselling theirs on ebay, still a gamble if you ask me.

Can you please just name a game where the the price has gone up after the game release, one game will do... excluding people selling it on auctions.

Back to the actual topic, I do agree the game is expensive and I hated the way they've made us wait for the shop to open 7-8 hours later and kept the price to themselves. I seriously think that some of the people that spent that money on the Full Bag one, realized that they just paid for something that you can only "hope" for, not saying it won't be good but we all know that there is a chance.

I would never pre-order MMO or pay anything for them in advance without actually testing them first. Or at the very least wait for release and read proper reviews.
    Addition:
I think you have to be a pretty fanatical about this game to actually pay for it at the moment. And being rich is not really an explonation because then you could invest in the game properly., Anyway, here is the reimbursement policy from the company. Read it very carefully:

    Mortal Online – Reimbursement Policy

Players are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the following information.
Note that this policy is not all inclusive. No reimbursement requests are guaranteed to be fulfilled.
The general rule is that we must be able to verify that your loss should not have occurred during
    normal game play.
Payments of license fees and monthly subscriptions are generally not refundable. If there is an error
in the payment transactions or duplication has been made the payment might be eligible for a
    reimbursement.
All reimbursement requests must be sent within a week from when the loss occurred. After that time
    we will not provide reimbursement.
Reimbursement requests are filed through sending a mail to support@starvault.se. No guarantee of
replacement is given or implied through the policies outlined here.
During the nature of an Open Beta, Mortal Online will not be functioning up to the standards of the
Gold Release of the game. This kind of Beta issues are not eligible for reimburersement.

You most likely resided within the EU (European Union) and subjected to VAT taxes.

I just created an account on Mortalonline.com to check the price and as I live in Norway, wich is not part of the EU, I am not subjected to VAT.

So the boxed version shows to me for 54,95 euro. Wich is pretty standard price in Europe these days for a boxed game.

That's what most sane people do. After D&L, Vanguard, AoC, WAR, Darkfall, etc one would hope people would learn, but I guess not. I would never spend $100+ on anything without knowing exactly what I am getting.

Your hyping this game way tooo much... Look at what happened to Darkfall after all of the hype wore out... We were left with a crappy unfinished beta game that took 7 years to create....

So you give them money HOPING it will be good without seeing their combat system or a gameplay video... why do people do this?  That is why these companies keep releasing unfinished games because people keep buying before they actually know anything about the game...

Anyway, people that are responsible will not pay that crazy high price without even knowing anything about the game as everything is still in alpha...  (i.e. the combat system)

    Good luck....

VAT adds around 8 euros to the price of the game (15%), it's not stupidly expensive. You are just getting ripped off by MO.

People are talking about prices I do not see in the store. Not even when I do a check out to the creditcard page. It still says 54,95 euros for the NORMAL boxed version. And I live in Norway, Europe.

And VAT differs per country. I know Holland charges 19% VAT. That's already 4% higher then what your country charges.

    Seriously..

No one is forcing anyone to buy the game. I bought the preorder boxed version without having played or seen that much of the game in action. I do it because the game looks good and sounds promising. I want to support them and that is the main reason for buying the game in its current state.

I dont expect much from beta. I hope i can give constructive feedback so the game can be even better at release.

Most important, i am not paying a monthly fee in beta. I felt like i was paying monthly fee in Darkfall for being a betatester. Only difference was that there wasent a charecter wipe in DF.

I am looking farward to MO. Can it live up to the hype? - no idea.

I bought the game because I am hopeful that we will finally have a FFA PvP game worth playing. However I do have my reservations about the game and a bit sceptic.

Even so I rather spend my money on a hopeful FFA PvP game than yet another dumbed down instanced, themepark MMORPG. I am sick of those...

Just wish there was a middle ground. An FFA PvP MMORPG with partial loot, moderate death penalty and optional 3rd person view so that it caters to more than just the extreme.

But yeah, the price was way more than expected but I am not hurting for cash right now so its ok for me :)

FFA PVP does not automatically mean you'll be ganked as soon as you'll login. In my point of view, it strongly encourages player-created politics - basically grouping up as tribes for protection. Crafters being protected by fighters, gatherers escorted by defending parties, leaders organizing raids on other 'tribes' for resources and territory etc.

Of course, this is what I hope to see in MO...
