This is a deal-breaker for me. Count me in the group that despises even the thought of MT in a subscription game.
Hope you plan on finding a new hobby, in the future almost all games will contain some form of RMT/micro transactions.
MMOs don't rule my life. If every MMO decides to do this I will find another hobby. I will bet you though there will be some titles around that still do not put in an item shop even if it is just one I may still play it.
Business model to protect against gold sellers? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Seriously, sir, you have mastered the subtle blade we call wit. Well played! Funniest comment ever posted here. You had me going there for a bit I thought you were for the MT store!
Its all just rationalizing.. thats all it is, those that are for it, are obviously for it because they'll play the game nomatter what. The take it or leave it populace doesn't like the idea... who cares if MTs are optional.. ALL MT games have optional MTs. If you want to experience the whole game then you have to pay for them... obviously the fanboys would rather pay twice with subscriptions and microtransactions.
This is where someone gets smart and says "Well so and so has MTs and is also a subscription game" and to that I call shananigans, for one, define an actual microtransaction model, and look what those games are selling, and two... they didn't have them on launch. So now I'm hearing excuses that this game was MORE expensive then other games, or this game needs them to stop gold spammers....... those... are.... both load of crap, and if you thought hard you'd know it. Not to mention the devs told us exactly why they were doing it.... its for the added revenue.... they know its because of greed.. but they say its to "make the game better" what it really is, is to perpetuate the Microtransaction Model while we suckers continue to pay subscriptions that will go on to form more MTs and Expansions (that they've already confirmed they were working on) so its quite obvious they know just how to get their moneys worth out of their community.
"uh uh uh, so what don't buy them!" Don't worry, I'm sure there will be plenty of people that don't buy this game, and it won't be just because of the MTs. Think I'm a hater? Read my previous posts in the CO forums on this site...
O_O i wont need to use the mt to experince the whole game if it comes down to the MT to experince the whole game. then i might just unsubbed depending on what it is.
see heres the thing i dotn mak ebig fusses on thign slike this if the game is funt o play and keeps me entertained for more than a month. i think i can deal with the mt just fine. i dotn understand why you gusy throw a fit about every lil thing. its stupid

Thats a very good idea, I mean if its between having to experience the whole game via MTs or unsubbing, a great number of players would probably choose to unsub, and I wouldn't blame them. It would also have to be what you consider experiencing the whole game, as I've always said, in a game where costume creation is 25% of the games draw, and them touting the best character creation around... wouldn't you expect costume pieces to be part of the gameplay? Regardless, if you do or don't... thats only partially the problem with the MTs...
I don't know for certain the sheer number of microtransactions they will have available at launch.. nor do I know what number of them will be items and costume pieces with stats (because items are supposed to show as part of your costume if you allow them). The MT left a bad taste in my mouth but they aren't MY game breaker...

Greed or the need to be profitable, have a successful business to continue to support the game and develop future games?? I gotta say people that come on and say it's greed are really ignoring some obvious factors. Each game that comes out tends to be more sophisticated, graphically improved, and generally more expensive to produce. Yet year after year the price to sub to games stays pretty much the same. So isn't it possible that it isn't greed but rather survival?
No, no it isn't. You are trying to tell me that all of these other games out there is able to survive off of $15 a month but suddenly Cryptic can't? Nope, it is greed, pure and simple.
Ummm, name me a gaming company that doesn't want to earn as much money as they can from their IP. Your argument is flawed. ALL gaming companies could be called greedy. All of them are in it for the money.
If you don't like MT's, great, don't buy anything from them. There is still an abundance of content in game. There is no need to buy anything from them.
I'm not buying the game because of the MT not just items from the MT. His arguement is flawwed yet you let the OP of that quote post they need to do it to survive? Seriously.
you dont need to buy from it why dont you people get this?
What you dont get is that some of the development time is being used for the items in the cashshop and not the coregame. Just one thing you can be certain of. The cashshop will have items that are worth buying. Simply because they want to make money of it.
Also what kind of player are you if you would accept items that are difficult to obtain ingame, and then sold just like that as alternative in the cash shop?
XP bonus cashshop items means that coregame xp gain is designed for a maximum amount of sales of xp bonus items. This could mean that if there wasnt a cashshop, you would gain xp faster.
All the items they planned for the cashshop have influenced the design of the game from the get go or at least let them make changes from the moment they decided to add the cashshop. Its not just about creating a core game and then as a bonus slap a cashshop on it with really useless items and just some fluff.
There is absolutely no reason to assume that the cashshop will cause more content to be released. Because you have no say about the released content, its more likely that some of the planned content that was meant for the coregame, will be put in the cashshop.
Try to think from a business perspective and you will see that with enough hype you can make this business model happen, without actually having to put extra manpower into the game, just extra profit from the cashshop. As long as enough players are gullable enough.
pshh not from what i can tell in game. funny thing is im not going to touch the shop. cause i wont have to. i dont care if osmeone else gets something before me. it snot a trick its just a biz model to help against gold sellers
To help who? The customer? LOL For the customer it doesnt matter if he buys virtual items from a goldseller or the company. Cashshop is just to help that company. And if you read carefully, I actually understand it from a business perspective. What boggles me though is that some customers think it is in their interest too. And that the extra revenue is warranted.
To keep it simple for you: Cash shop means actual slower development for the coregame and fast development for the cash shop.
Why wouldn't they put it in the store? If they make something really cool, and there are suckers actually willing to pay extra real money on top of a monthly fee for that item, of course it will be in the store as that is more money for them.
Using that logic can you explain why there aren't enhancement sets on the CoX store? Can you explain why there isn't any raid gear available from the WoW card game? Can you explain why SOE didn't put raid gear on their MT store?
No, you can't explain that because they know its not a good idea to do that sort of thing. I think you're letting paranoia get the better of you.
It's all a balancing act and the skill of walking a very fine line. They have to distinguish how far they can go before they piss off too many people, and I can guarentee you they will continue to push that line with the good ole "foot in the door" method.
But, I took "cool item" as something aesthetic, not something functional.
Oh but SIR, in CO you can get items that are BOTH aesthetic AND functional.... AND PAY FOR THEM..... ....with money
Is there a list somewhere of what items and effects they are selling? Or is this just trolling making up details that don't exist?
I gotta say people that come on and say it's greed are really ignoring some obvious factors. Each game that comes out tends to be more sophisticated, graphically improved, and generally more expensive to produce.
I'm not sure this is entirely accurate.
What makes you think games are progressively more expensive to produce, and what time frame/ baseline are you using for the comparison? Just because games are newer doesn't mean they cost more. Look at the Wii. Nintendo is shitting gold because they made a cheaper console than their competitors, and thus had higher adoption rates and profit margins. Look at WoW. Its graphics are piss-poor by design so it can run on a large variety of low-end systems. Did it cost Blizzard more to do it that way than it cost Sony to aim for higher poly counts in EQ2? I highly doubt it.
Computer hardware is cheaper now than it has ever been thanks to the economic downturn, so all of the theoretical inflation you're talking about can only come from developer and executive salaries (and maybe marketing budgets, since hyping itself is the one thing this industry is adept at).
Hardware is cheaper but people and software are not. Support is not. And in my experience if you give someone more capacity they will find a way to use it all. Same goes for hardware. So hardware savings and bandwidth savings equate to nothing because computer software & implementations grow to match the capacity of the equipment.
There are ups and downs but the cost of producing a class A MMO title is going up. The cost of running a class A MMO title is going up. Again there are of course variations between games and companies etc. But generally they are going up.
Salaries can be your basis and salaries have been continously going up, as is cost of living, etc. Now with the current economic down turn you might say it is going down but it won't. 10 years from now this will have been a hickup in the general upward trend.
Is there a list somewhere of what items and effects they are selling? Or is this just trolling making up details that don't exist?
The dev's made a dev post a week or two ago about this. Most of the items are purely cosmetic like costume peices etc. He did specifically state tho that any items that are more than that are available IN game as well through crafting or drops. Paying cash merely gets these items faster. Personally I doubt these items are overwhelming factors in anything since that would utterly destroy the game's chances of success. The few RMT games that handle their cash shop that way are horrible games from the moment you log in and aren't exactly successful outside of Asia.

To expand a little bit, items with stats (and some without stats) will have aesthetic values to them including things like stat and set bonuses. That means that in order for that big boost, you could spend and extra 8 to 12 dollars and get yourself a complete set and to look like a ninja, or a cat person, or rodeo clown or whatever they have... and be well on your way to PvP greatness while others stand around and play the same content for drops, be them rare or otherwise.

Bill Roper: Right. So for us, the things we’re looking at with micro-transactions are more along the lines of being fun for players to have that aren’t going to be doing anything to disrupt or upset the balance of the game, or give someone who decides to use micro-transactions any kind of leg up on anybody else.
So it won't be things that upset the balance of the game, which would obviously exclude normal gear and definitely excludes high end gear. There might be things like Power Replacers which change the way a power works, but doesn't make it any stronger. There might be temporary travel powers like those available in CoX. Those are things that have a "game effect" but don't necessarily upset the balance of the game.

Well this isn't acceptable to me but I'll wait until the game has been released and there are specific details out. If the items are easily attainable in game and there are many quest and rarer items in game that are not available in the mall then maybe I'll be ok. But if like I said I play the game and feel a NEED to buy stuff from the item mall then this is a deal breaker and I won't play the game. If they want to force me to buy items from the item mall then I expect the game to be free or virtually free.
Most of you are delusional. MMO producing companies will do what they feel will allow them to survive and hopefully thrive. If Cryptic thinks they can survive by offering microtransactions to their customers, then let them do it. If they balance it right, it could be beneficial. If they slant too much towards the MT's and their subscribers feel like they're having to pay more monthly than the game is worth, they'll exercise their consumer rights to stop paying.
I'm not sure why some of you feel like Cryptic is being greedy or w/e. If they're charging more for a product than it's worth TO YOU, then DON'T BUY IT. There are certainly other forms of entertainment that you could be pumping your money into. If you don't like how Cryptic does it, go somewhere else. All this blathering in this forum about their decision is ridiculous. Most of you sound like a bunch of whiny, self-entitled, brats, who aren't getting their due.
Be a consumer. Make a decision. Move along. Don't stand on your soapbox all hours of the day and scream about how unfair it is that some "greedy" company is charging what they want for their product. Or do, because this is the Internet and really, you can be so special here and fit right in.
For me and many others, this crosses a line. And it raises questions about the decision makers for this game. The people who really want MTs don't want subscriptions. Many who prefer subscriptions would rather chew their own foot off than play a game with MTs. This model will have limited appeal.
...and the many similar posts that followed.
I think the majority of the negative posters are caught up in the name and haven't thought through the reality of MMO games. The most popular game (World of Warcraft) is chock full of MT. Blizzard doesn't call it by that name, and Blizzard isn't the direct recipient of all the MT, but they are functionally there.
You can change servers, change names, change looks, and change factions (or soon to be) all by direct payment to Blizzard.
You can pick up in-game cosmetics (couple dozen or so now) including a game affecting mount by purchasing cards (indirect payment to Blizzard) or by going to ebay (very indirect payment to Blizzard since someone had to purchase all the cards to sell the in-game items).
You can improve your character by purchasing gold from various websites (very, very indirect payment to Blizzard since the gold farmers do pay for their accounts to do the farming). You can use that gold to purchase very affecting items in-game. Do you really think Blizzard programmers are so bad that they couldn't hunt down farmers more easily? I have my developers hunt down data all the time, and looking for large gold transfers between characters in logs is cake. Blizzard goes after the easy targets, but have no illusions, Blizzard understands that gold farmers are part of the game. Remember, this is the same company that has no issues with multi-boxing...pay for the account and they are happy, game balance is secondary.
And all of these features add up to....yep, the same kind of MT that Crypic is going to offer. No, you don't have to change servers, change names, change looks, change factions, pick up in-game cosmetics (or mount), or buy gold...and you can function just fine in WoW. How is that any different than what Crypic announced?
Cryptic comes along offering these kinds of services at launch, and the majority of the posters act like this is something new. This is nothing new, and, in some respects, kind of refreshing that Cryptic is being up-front about it.
Nearly all mixed games say that their MT items are "weak" or only "visual" and 95% of the items are so but the last 5% make a big differense, like 50% added exp or instant heal potions (my favorid in PvP game).
Other games also often offer the possibility to get shop items via quests or random drops. I remember a very nice looking horse in a game that you could by for about 10$ or you could do a quest to kill 100 of a special mob. Problem was only that this mob existed only once in a hard to come to area and had a respawn timer of about one hour. How camped do you think the place was?
As the game isn't realy fun to play, in my options, i guess i pass also.

I hear this rather often from those that think they're exercising "common sense" but really its a ridiculous as any of the others that love or hate the game. "If you don't like it, don't buy it." Uhm, I get it, and I don't like it.... and I probably won't buy it... but thats not due to the MicroTransactions. You see, its easy to say "If you don't like it, don't buy it" and its already prevalent that there are numbers here who are willing to do just that... but just as any reviewer can review the good and bad about a game, as can I simply, about this payment model, which is obviously looked down upon.
Its as simple as saying, "do you like to pay more for items that you could normally get in game for free, but they charge for now?" "Do you like to pay for items your subscription money pays to create but you'll never actually get to use unless you pay MORE?" I mean anyone with "common sense" would answer no... everyone else seems to rationalize it because they don't want to see the game flop. It doesn't mean I'm self entitled, it means I'd like to play a game that doesn't push me to pay extra money because they're scared of lost revenue due to bad choices or a market downturn.
And if items in game were so easy to get, or the items with stats just didn't matter, then what is the selling point for those? "You can buy this item for 2 dollars, or you can just walk on over and get it from this boss, he drops them every time... but it won't matter anyway cause you'll outlevel the stats in an hour, but thanks for your purchase."
The point of Microtransactions is to make extra money on items people want to buy. If the stats didn't matter they wouldn't add them.
For me and many others, this crosses a line. And it raises questions about the decision makers for this game. The people who really want MTs don't want subscriptions. Many who prefer subscriptions would rather chew their own foot off than play a game with MTs. This model will have limited appeal.

Nonsense.
Microtransactions have a very specific meaning in the context of mmos, and that is the purchase of virtual items with real-world money - and these usually exist in free-to-play mmos as the primary means of financing the game.
Server changes and name changes are account service fees. They have no impact on the gameworld.
WOW has, from what players tell me now, microtransactions for hairstyles. That's it. That's not "chock full". It's a small aesthetic MT. It's very greedy on Blizzard's part, given their phenomenal success and it also strikes me as an odd MT given most sets of armour come with helmets that hide your hairstyle...

Your understanding of RMT is a very granular portion of what the industry believes it to be. I would say you're limiting it to an item mall more than anything.

I would say you're limiting it to an item mall more than anything.
....... in this case the Micro Transactions will be an item mall... this is merging 2 payment models in one..... buying account changes and server transfers aren't considered payment models... This is a true blue MT model that you have to pay a subscription to gain access to. There is a difference..... its silly some people can't see that. If nothing else you can see the difference between this payment structure and other MMOs.

I have no idea if you're trying to make a point or if you're just trying to be right about something. You can't argue that in this case microtransactions are one limited set, but sometimes they're something else. Had you actually read the link I posted, RMT's cover ANY real money transactions for moving bits of data. Bits of data isn't limited to a character's items, name, or server location, but it certainly does cover those three things. You're using real money to manage, add, remove, or otherwise change, data.
"buying account changes and server transfers aren't considered payment models.." is incorrect. Anything a company does to get money from you is part of their money-making plan.
I personally don't care for item malls as part of a subscription based MMO, but I'm not going to succumb to some irrational idea that I can alter the idea or definition of a term because I'm want to divest its meaning.
everyone needs to look at it like this. im pretty sure everyone at some point in their life has gone to wal-mart or some similar store and gone through the checkout line. now when you get there theres all this random crap and candy there you can buy. so think of the MT as all that random stuff at the check out line when youre leaving the store. you can either buy the 4 pack of reeces peanut butter cups and a pepsi or coke like i do sometimes or you dont. i think thats a pretty civil way to look at cryptics model here.
excuse me but i've already paid for my peanut butter cups and pepsi - - - see, here is my receipt for $14.95
got it yet?
in addition to what you were going to buy in the first place. sorry i wasnt more detailed enough for you to understand. got it yet?

well if they'd stop paying 30 million a flop they'd make money to stick around!
I consider this game now garbage that I would never touch.

To expand a little bit more
Bill Roper: Right.

Or do, because this is the Internet and really, you can be so special here and fit right in.
so...

I think the majority of the negative posters are caught up in the name and haven't thought through the reality of MMO games. The most popular game (World of Warcraft) is chock full of MT. Blizzard doesn't call it by that name, and Blizzard isn't the direct recipient of all the MT, but they are functionally there.

....... in this case the Micro Transactions will be an item mall... this is merging 2 payment models in one..... buying account changes and server transfers aren't considered payment models...

I personally don't care for item malls as part of a subscription based MMO, but I'm not going to succumb to some irrational idea that I can alter the idea or definition of a term because I'm want to divest its meaning.
so...
excuse me but i've already paid for my peanut butter cups and pepsi - - - see, here is my receipt for $14.95
got it yet?
in addition to what you were going to buy in the first place. sorry i wasnt more detailed enough for you to understand. got it yet?
Tries to think of a brilliant analogy...
Problem I have is this...
Cosmetic stuff is a normal part of games. They subtract that from the
normal part and then charge you for it.
Check out Crimecraft. Basic character creation has like 6 faces and 5 hair styles.
You can buy about 20 different faces...
So you can be Captain Anonymous...or actually have a character.
