Champions Online is getting ready to Start...will this be the WoW Killer?

HorkathaneHorkathane Member Posts: 380

I dont know about you but I am pretty excited about CO. Its the first Big MMO to hit by a well known Company from a successful mmo background in a genre they started and PWN. Bigtime Mainstream going up against the biggest time mainstream which is WoW. The good thing about WoW is it got allot of people into the mmo industry that would never play mmos before and now they are hooked and sooner or later they are gonna be looking for something else.

I played CoH for years and loved it but I think CO will follow down the same line. It is a fun theme and looks to be a good game but I think the genre is limited. So my guess is it will not come close to being a WoW killer. Actually I see games like CO, Aion and the like chipping away at the WoW playerbase, like myself, who have played a long time and are looking for something new. I agree that WoW brought a lot of people into MMOs and as they look at new stuff they will leave but I don't really believe that we will see another WoW subscription killer game as there are so many more to choose from each year.

Why does everyone look for a new MMO to kill WoW? I don't think WoW will ever be killed by any other MMO company besides Blizzard. WoW doesn't have to be killed when a new MMO comes out, and imo it won't be killed by a new MMO. I am not a WoW fanboy, but I do play it. I am also in the beta for CO.

I don't really buy into the concept of a WOW killer.  Reguardless, the Superhero genre simply isn't big enough to "kill" wow. Even if everone who plays CO stopped playing (and was currently playing)  WOW to play CO, WOW would still by far be the most popular MMO in North America.

Let me be the 4th to say, No

If you can say what the death of WoW would be defined as. Hell, we are still looking for an EQ1 killer, or UO killer.

I think we as players must abandon the expectaion of a large  population based deterioration of warcraft and make it more personal. That way it is achievable.

"WoW is dead to me...I am the WoW killer"

Say it, think it, dream it and put it in your sig

Ummm, definitely not.  Although I am a fan of the superhero genre of MMO's, it is a niche market.  I think it will do well, but "Hell to the NO" on the WoW killer.

I have to agree with the majority, no, it won't be.

I have at least ten or fifteen guild members who have been in the CO beta for quite some time, and every single one of them has said they plan to stay with WoW (and that CO is actually pretty lackluster, which is strictly opinionated of course, but relevant nonetheless).

So far, I have yet to meet anyone that would leave there current game for CO.

Aion, however, is another story entirely. Plenty of people I know planning to leave for Aion in Sept...

I think a certain NCsoft game that's due to be released soon has more chance of putting a dent in blizzards juggernaut.

Hell no... I don't even understand how you can seriously ask this question.

  • skydragonrenskydragonren Member Posts: 667

Screw it I am going to say yes, just because every post so far has been "NO" "no...." or "Hell No!".

SO YES! I THINK IT'S A WOW KILLER DAMNIT!!!!

CO will be played by people who like super heroes and who like CoX, since it is pretty much the same game but better.

Co lacks the gear whoring that many people like about WoW and really it is the opposite.  I don't think WoW will be killed anyway it will just age till it goes into retirement and die silently in its sleep from old age.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

New games don't kill old favorites, bad development/management choices kill old favorites.  World of Warcraft will eventually jump the shark and people will find something new only afterward.  No game has the sheer amount of dollars behind it to even come close to the polish and content that World of Warcraft offers every few months.

Sorry if that isn't the answer you were looking for.

No game will ever do what WoW did in terms of subs.

WoW was a fluke, "The Perfect Storm", of MMOs.

The right game by right company using the right IP with right gameplay, at the right time.

WoW will decline in time, and something else will take the top spot, but they won't even be close to where WoW had gotting too.

CO isn't even going to put a dent in WoW, at all.

How can it even think to be?  WoW has servers all over the world right?  NA is actually only about less than half the reported game population.

Even without knowing a thing about CO I'm guessing it's going to feature fairly US-centric style super hero's right?  If so how could that even compete in a world market.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

WoW isn't going to be killed. WoW is going to die slowly, from old age.

If there was a game that let you jump a shark for a reward, rather than just beating it up, I would definately try it haha.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

CO isn't a threat to WoW. Hell, it's not even a threat to City of Heroes!

  • BrixonBrixon Member UncommonPosts: 259

Perhaps you should hold off on the hype till it's released. We all know hype is overated when it comes to MMO's.

A superhero game a wow killer? yeah, right

  • porovaaraporovaara Member Posts: 48

As good as Champions looks, what's the market? Everyone is a super hero? Bleh. The whole game theme isn't compelling enough to care. People want to grow their characters into "super" powerered in releation to the world. Not just start out as bad ass... well some do, but their attention span is abou...

No game that involves men in tights will ever have a chance of dethroning WOW.

Why is it people want wow to die... I don't get it, if you don't like the game dont play it and get on with your life. I mean i come on these fourms once aday and someone has started a new  "WoW Killer" thread. I am far from a wow fan-boy, i will admit i am currently playing wow among other things. So could someone explain to me why  people want wow to die. I mean there is one game that i will celebrate once it is cancelled but im not on here makeing post about it.....

    WoW killer?? In short: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

Seriously, the only thing that will kill WoW is if Blizzard close down the servers, the next Blizzard mmo or time amd I'm not too sure about the last one seeing as Ultima Online still being played. Hell, even The Realm Online got players, the oldest mmo I know of that's still active. Released in 1996. When you think about it it's not that old.

Despite what delirious fanboys of whatever mmo in the making say, they are peanuts compared to WoW. WoW is the king of the hill. If you haven't gotten used to it by now, you never will. Good luck living in lala-land then.
