Meh I don't think WoW will be killed, but rather it'll die an old man's death.
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed: And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!" ~Lord George Gordon Byron
it's a fun game... but .. sometimes you run arround and scream: "Holy atomic pile, look, there is Batman!" but then: "Oh, no wait it's only Catman!" and.. your errection went to zero.
what do i try to say? champions online is a superhero game, but you always feel like a bit in a cheap copy of a bigger production, maybe you will feel like in a B-movie.
I'm afraid this game won't be a WoW killer. I don't think there ever will be a WoW killer.
To kill WoW is to kill MMORPGs, basically. It would have to be some type of new game technology that puts gaming on the PC to shame. Some kind of virtual reality online game. Put on your VR goggles and headset and off you go into the most immersive online gaming experience you've ever had.
Otherwise, if / when Blizzard releases their next MMO, they've already got a giant and loyal fanbase, who will all probably sub to Blizzard's next MMO. The only challenge Blizzard has when it releases its next MMO is stealing subs from themselves. So they don't have much to worry about.

I dont know about you but I am pretty excited about CO. Its the first Big MMO to hit by a well known Company from a successful mmo background in a genre they started and PWN. Bigtime Mainstream going up against the biggest time mainstream which is WoW. The good thing about WoW is it got allot of people into the mmo industry that would never play mmos before and now they are hooked and sooner or later they are gonna be looking for something else.
It won't be the WoW killer, nor will it dethrone WoW

I don't even know why Im dignifying the Op with an answer ... but here I am. NO, not just NO ... but a flat out NO. Any monkey capable of reasoning could have come up with the same answer. Yet, time and time again , here we are in the forums answering the same question.
I'm in the beta but it doesn't really feel like anything special. Can't say anything due to the NDA, obviously, but yeah it didn't catch me the same way Aion did. Of course that may be up to total personal preference.
I'm on the flip side, being in both betas. Aion got boring and CO won out. It surprised me more than anyone.
Same. Coming from WoW, after playing CO then playing Aion, Aion was unimpressive and boring. No, I shouldn't have to grind 20 levels before the game gets good. Part of a dev's job is to capture the audience at the beginning, something most games fail to do. Only WAR and CO have managed to do this for me, so far. The only thing Aion has going for it (in my opinion) is how smooth and polished it does seem to be. Take CO and add Aion's polish and... wow. It'd be a potent combination.
Still, Cryptic did shoot themselves in the foot by making the cashshop part of the game. While it may or may not really be a big deal, they lost alot of potential customers just based on ethics.
no this is a super hero game. it may kill CoH tho.
You may very well be right about COH. I think it will be the kiss of death for the good old COX line when DCUO, AND Champions are both out and running.
There is nothing that is going to be a WOW killer ever. WOW will probably just kill itself over time when it become so dated it is no longer woth while.
It would be great if you could actually do a spin a la Linda Carter and transform into a hero. Or switch from hero to "normal" in order to do some quests. Perhaps you would have to be careful in people finding out about your secret. BUT, that's too much to ask these days I guess. Therefore, not a WoW killer.

It's a different atmosphere. You can't just say, "It's a superhero game, it has to be like Superman". These are full-time heroes. The main point of having a secret identity is to protect those who are close to you from your enemies. Well, in the Champions universe, if some nutjob targets your girlfriend, you go kick his butt. Then you fight off some aliens, revolutionaries, radiation-crazed mutants, ice demons, monstrous creations, etc. The world has tons of problems so you have to be a full-time hero.

Heh, I don't like cash shops. And I might huff and puff about them. But in the end, as long as they don't equate into actual power in the game... its not going to keep me from playing a good game.
I figure thats probably the way it is with most people. They'll gripe and snarl, and threaten to boycott everything to do with the game, but in the end they'll still give the game a shot and choose to continue to play on its merits.. Somebody in a different thread made the point its no different than Blizzard and its WoW trading card game, and it really isn't.
I am soo glad Champions Online does NOT have open world pvp. WoW/DarkFail/L2 are the horrible way they are because of the PvP and PvP community. I hope NOTHING ever kills those games for you.

I dont mind cash shops for fluff. I would never how ever play a game like Runes of Magic or others where they do stuff like....
Ok player ill give you 6 slots for inventory. you can however rent more slots! in 6 slot increments for only 10blah blah cash a month!

Even on comics there are plenty of heroes without a secret identity ... and villains too.
Not saying that a secret identity feature would not be cool (add flavor/RP element). They may add something like that in the future... the game is just new... not finished.
Anyway, you can have lots costumes slots and you can create many looks... from monster to a regular guy or a cheerleader (save the world!)... so even if there is not a game feature behind it, you can RP at will. Most my heroes in CoH had one *normal* costume/outfit and it worked great.
RP is not about game mechanics. Its about players pretending ;-)

I agree with this... PvP is ok but there are too many people who populate open PvP games whose only purpose in life is to aggravate other players - the game itself becomes lost underneath their endless idiocy. I often wonder what they do in real life because I know they are not as "Brave" as they like to seem to be in open PvP games. Their attitude is what ruined Shadowbane for me. So I am glad champions will not be open PvP, and since players are only allowed to be Heros I cannot understand why they thought there would be open PvP.
If you dig around, I think Jack Emmert has said on more than one occasion that they don't NEED this game to be a WOW killer for it to turn them a nice profit..in fact, their break-even point is below 100k subs and anything above 100k is pure gravy for them. It's refreshing to see a company come out and say "we don't want to 'kill" WoW, we just want to make a fun game that makes us a little cash"
WoW is an aberration, but a needed one at the time it came out...it really opened up the industry to the general public and spurred more companies into making games. More games, for good or ill, is still better than fewer games.

Their idea is a much healthier descision as well. Shows they actually care about their game and are striving to make a decent MMO. But to be honest, you never really know with the fans. It just may surprise everyone and be top within a few years or so.
Currently playing: Star Wars: The Old Republic, World of Warcraft, Dota 2, League of Legends

The one thing I like about Horkathane (the OP) is that he/she gets very excited about things. Nothing wrong with that. Im sure they don't really think this game will topple WoW. It just cracks me up how many people seem to actually take offense to his statements. Some people need to back away from the screen and take a reality check.
Cheers!

Are people just so plain stupid?
Only time will kill any MMO. So asking if Aion, CO, STO, etc will kill World of Warcraft is just getting anoying.

It's a good game.
But WoW killer? No. Please don't ask such ridiculous questions, it just makes everyone around here cranky and it makes you an easy target.
I'm on the flip side, being in both betas. Aion got boring and CO won out. It surprised me more than anyone.

Could the mods please kill any thread that has "WoW" and "killer" in the title?
no this is a super hero game. it may kill CoH tho.
I would have to agree with this sentiment...

To be frank.....no it wont.
The only thing that can kill WoW is a miracle or an awesome DX11 title that knocks everyone's socks off.
And no, CO isn't capable of a miracle.
(This space is reserved for a miracle)
I would have to agree with this sentiment...
me too, the only thing that will "kill" WoW is time.

PANTS!!!!
