    Eewww...

Guys being girls are just as bad as cross-dressers.

I do realize that in a Roleplaying World you can become anything you want, but I will always be a girl (in real life and in the game).

dur! image that's one reason guys like playing girls... get free stuff!!!

my fiancee has female alts. i love us both playing females and have that hint of some lesbianism going on between our characters. it's fun. besides, when he's playing a chick, i don't worry about other chicks hitting on him. image

being a female and playing a male, i can tell a big difference between how the guys treat me. s'ok though. if i were a guy i'd wanna play a hot chick too! image

Maybe, just maybe its possible that guys who play girls online are just acting out what they would like to be in real life but cant.

I have seen how people treat female characters, and it is almost.... almost worth playing a female., but I just can't do it.

Seriously though, I play both male and female characters. I am male, btw, and staunchly heterosexual, just ask my live in girlfriend. Some character types or ideas I get just fit better with a female persona. Not to mention, if I have to watch the back of my character for hours on end, why not let it be a hot female back. In fact, those people staring at the back of their male characters all day, now thats suspect!

Usually, my mains have been male with only alts as female. But, I am not beyond having a female as a main if thats what fits my character concept best.

I for one see nothing wrong with gender ambiguity ingame. I often play both x and y chromosomes.

  • BigPeelerBigPeeler Member Posts: 1,270

my main will be male (always has, always will be) most likely named BigPeeler too... but i will most likely have a secondary female character...

i personally dont see anything wrong with playing a female character in MMORPGs... the only thing i have a problem with is males playing females but telling people they are female IRL (which happens quite a bit)... i personally make sure EVERYBODY knows that im a male IRL because A. i dont like getting handouts and speciall treatment due to a stupid lie, and B. i cant stand having guys hit on me...

anyways... yes, i will have a female character (most likely) but it will probably be a 2nd or 3rd character... 1st is always teh BP image

I really gotta agree with kielia on this one, guys who play female characters in MMORPGs are basically cross dressing.  Sure you say you just prefer to look at some hot skimpily clad female character, but you probably prefer it even more when everyone treats you like m'lady and a princess.  So stop wearing your mom's panties and just go get a sex change already... weirdos.  If you're a guy, you should play a male character, if you're a female you should play a female character, if your a hemaphrodite feel free to play either.  If you've got issues, see a psychiatrist.  But stop playing female characters if you're a guy, it's just icky.

I'm going as a female assassin.  In my opinion, nothing wrong with playing a female toon.

i dont see anything wrong with playing a female char as a guy, as long as you let people know your a guy. i usually play a male character, but, in SWG i played a female.lots of guys hit on you and give you free items...whats even worse they still do it even when you tell them your a dude. had one guy say...you dont look like a guy here, so it makes no difference. it gets weird...and i have decided to play a male character in games from now on, although the free handouts werent bad, i can definately do without the guys making out with my character.

    I agree.

I find it interesting that grown men will take on an image of femininity (and probably flirt with other men, act twee and generally act like a flaming gaylord) in order to gain more for themselves.

Sure, being greedy and deceptive can give good rewards, but greed and deception - although not illegal - aren't morally right in my opinion.

Yes, MMORPGs are a great way to escape from real life but if you have a need to escape from the confines of your own gender maybe you should be sitting in a shrinks chair, not at your computer.

This debate has been going one since the late 70's throughout a many of college dormitories when pen and paper DnD first came out.

The debate will always continue because there are just as many people who find nothing wrong with it as there are those wo do find something wrong with it.

I play both men and women in mmorpgs.  Currently in EQ2 beta, I have 2 men and 2 women. I do not do it for free items or free favors (as I have never experienced that on EQ2). However If someone asks if Im a guy, I will certainly tell them.

I do not think it's cross dressing whatsoever.  Crossdressing is dressing up as an opposite sex for sexual desires. To be honest with you, this has never happened to me lol. It's just a game.

However you have your opinions and I have mine. The bottom line is this: there is no right answer as it hasn't been solved since the 70's.

OK, that clears up why you don't do it.

So why do you do it? There has to be some motivation for representing yourself as a girl.

Its a role playing game, and It is acceptable to play a role, even if its another gender. Thats the point of the game.

But.. I will never do it, I think its just wierd. All of my characters are male. I cannot relate as much to being a female. I would never do it to "stare at an ass". If you are doing that.. you are not relating to your character, you are staring at them.. which takes away from that immersive part of the game. And its just wierd.

HAHA! My friends and I have had so many discussions about this. They say if they are going to spend hours looking at an a$$ it might as well be a nice a$$. While I agree with that statement wholeheartedly, I just can't bring myself to play a girl. I've made female characters, but I just can't play them.

Besides, when I walk up in game and talk to a girl, I'd really like for it to be a girl. Not some sweaty, fat, smoking, hairy weirdo in a wife beater pretending to be one. Ewwww, I grossed myself out.

    LOL. One word:

            Rollplaying

It's what these kind of games are all about. Just like chatrooms, people can pretend to be whoever they want. If you want every female in the game to be played by females, you'll not see very many of them. I'm only speculating here, but I'd say at least half of the females in any given game are male. If you don't like the fact that guys play them, then DON'T give freebies out and/or flirt with every female you see. The funny thing is, my fiancee can get more stuff playing a female than I can... which is pretty darned funny. IMO it's because I play too much like a guy and they figure I must be one of those guys playing female character types. LOL.

Notice there isn't how many chicks are gonna be guy character theads...

so does that mean all you guys think it's ok for a chick to play a guy and not a guy to play a chick?

I rarely play female characters.  In fact, the only game I have done so in, was Lineage 2, as a Dark Elf.  No matter what, in past and present, I've played a male character as my main- I was playing the game as if I was him.  While playing my female DE in Lineage though, I wasn't playing the game as if I was her, I was playing, because she was nice to look at over a long span of time.  For those of you who have played Lineage 2 know how the dark elves look, and might understand where I'm going.  I think that nothing is wrong with playing a female character, although in many instances, it can be very akward.  I've had people flirt with me, but once hearing I'm a guy, left me alone.  In EQ2 (the next mmorpg I'll be playing) my main will be a wood elf male, but my alt will be a female dark elf.  There are several reasons for me doing this, non consisting of me wanting to be a girl, or to attract the opposite gender.  I am straight, and very secure in my sexuality.  I am sad to say, I am even slightly homophobic.  I play them because I can't complain when looking at them, and in EQ2's case, I think the male dark elves look like crap.  Either way, there is nothing wrong with you if you do, or if you don't play a female character.  You don't need to 'become' that character, although it is not a problem if you do either.  This is a roleplaying game after all... I can go on and on, but I'm going to probably be late to school how it is.

You know what Rayune, you are just a simple minded fool. How pathetic someone has to think that just because a male is in Interior Design that he absolutely has to be gay. It realy just shows your ignorance.

  • jannesjannes Member Posts: 29

This is a problem i've been thinking about alot. my personal opinion is that it's ok, just like picking a race you can also pick a gender. picking a race isnt wrong, so why is picking a gender?

anyway i play about 90% female... depends on the game and role i'm playing. and i am honest when they ask RL gender image dont want to get free items

on the wow forums was this topic also adressed, and some wow guy made an very intelligent post there, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-general&t=424439&p=1#post424439, post 7.

    bah, this is a game

I play palladium which is paper/pencil gaming. We play with a group of 5. 4 guys, one girl. One of the guys plays a female character...no..he doesnt talk in a high pitched voice.. shes actually quite barbaric. The girl plays a male.

I play a female character in lineage. I have had more misunderstandings from other women about this choice than anything, probably because im prettier (jk) wink.gif

bottom line is these are games. if someone has issues with this then maybe they need to take a step back and do some real life to "pretend" comparisons and get a grip. if you're offended because some guy whos playing a girl is flirting with you or think this guy is a homosexual... maybe its in fact that you're looking for something within the game and cant seperate that from real life.

in a nutshell, this isnt a dating service. its a game. if your male and meet a female..what do you care if its a 33 year old dude with a beer in his hand at the other end unless you want to date this cartoon image wink.gif which is what real life is for

This is one of the reasons I wish the gaming industry would drag itself into the 21st century and include voice chat in all multiplayer games.

That way, people might be forced to resist their primaeval urge to be deceptive.

The way I see it, when you're creating your character the "Gender: Male/Female" option isn't asking "Which gender do you want people to see you as?", it's asking "Which gender are you?" so that everyone you meet ingame will know. For me, it's not even something I'd even consider a choice. I'm a man, so I click "Male".

You can respond by saying "It's ROLEPLAYING!", and that's fine, but the question still stands why would a male want to play the role of a female?

If you're not doing it for free stuff and you're honest about being a male IRL (but only if people ask, of course) what chain of thought processes compels you to click "Female" rather than "Male"? Can anyone tell me their motivation?

One is lead to assume that for those that would only play a male character because they are male also never play anything other than human of relatively good alignment in game. I mean none of you are Ogres os Dark Elves or Ratonga are you? And I would not imagine that any of you are actualy Evil are you? So based on this line or thinking, none of you have ever played any game that has had a female main character like Tomb Raider. The question of male/female is the same thing as choosing race, class and alignment. Any one who has or will play a female character is mostly just doing it for a change, something new in the game. Same reason people have their alts differant classes or races, for diversity, thats all. It has nothing to do with them wanting to be a female. That arguement has no weight at all. I mean, do you guys realy want to be the characters you play in game in real life. I doubt it. It has nothing to do with closeted desires or sexual misgivings or anything of the sort, it realy doesnt

    U havent read imagehttp://www.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-general&t=424439&p=1#post424439

it says about this, to answer your question:

What am I getting at? Well, if you're a guy who is a) older b) not interested in trash talk or macho posturing c) less into PvP d) interested in peaceful virtual endeavors e) a parent f) interested in intelligent conversations g) not much of a "jock" in rl anyway, your online demographic more closely matches that of the female players than that of the male. And given how males and females interact, it's actually easier to find that sort of society within the game if you're female-presenting yourself. This class of players will tend not to act in overly sexual ways, will tend not to choose ridiculously hypersexualized avatars, and will in fact get offended in the same ways as a real female will over sexual stereotyping.
