Here you wanna be safe?  Take it this way:

#1 - Most real girls you meet in MMORPGs are not single.  Their rl boyfriends are the ones that get them into MMORPGs in the first place.

#2 - Offer the girl to join your teamspeak server.  99% of the time if they refuse for whatever reason, it's a man in RL.  A colleague of mine at work plays Planetside, and she's a girl, her boyfriend got her addicted to it, and in Grrl Forums (It's a forum for tom-boys... girls that like video games and stuff) and there's threads on how to spot a fake-girl, and one of the reasons is the refusal to install TeamSpeak which runs even on a Pentium 1.  So when a "girl" you meet in-game gives the excuse that TeamSpeak crashes her computer or slows it down.  Don't argue, just say "You're a man" then ignore her. image   According to the forums, all girls that play MMORPGs are sick of being called fakes when they are real, which is why they all use TeamSpeak.  Wow.

#3 - If on the first meeting you ask the question "Are you a girl in RL?" and she answers yes, it's a guy.  If you offended her, then it's a girl.

omg... I'm gonna be so hated by girls cause of this... bah well... what can I do?  I just don't want the same thing to happen to some of you that happened to me.

When you've had 10 MMORPG wives and only 3 of them were real females, you know there's a problem with today's society.

    thats true

Especially with your last point. My wife plays EVE like crazy; when people asks if she's a girl irl, she targets them an PKs them lol

And yes, she uses teamspeak all the time. Funniest thing on earth too cause all of her friends on EVE are all guys from Iceland, England, and Sweden.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

I was just playing EQ2 beta with some friends last night. They invited me to Teamspeak. I hated it! It is so irritating hearing all the voices in my head! Next time someone asks me to join a Teamspeak channel, I am going to deny... playing a girl or not!

Besides, if someone asks me if I am a girl in real life, I tell them "I'm anything you want me to be" anyway. ::::02::

When I'm asked if I'm a RL chick, I don't want to answer yes, because most of the time, the askers  start hitting on me like mad. My fiancee plays right next to me, and it's really awkward to try to explain why this guy is acting like a horny freak.

So ya, I can agree that some chicks will not say they are just to not get harassed.

In Ultima Online, the unicorns could only be ridden by female tamers.  So you see some games have incentive to be different.  I don't see how playing the opposite gender has anything to do with anything.  I am a girl IRL.  For most of my life I've had to play a guy because most single player games only have male characters.  I play a girl when I have the option.  To me it doesn't matter what anyone plays.

I'm so glad I never have to deal with that sort of garbage in game, or out of game for that matter.

It's all about looking mean, and/or pissed off. If you look like you'll tear their head off, most sane people will leave you be. Which might go a long way in explaining why so many of the women I've dated turned out to be raving lunatics.

Might not be as effective for women as men tend to be a bit slow witted at the best of times, and tend not to pick up on subtlety, especially if there's booze involved.

I have met quite a few nice female characters in EQ II Beta already, whether or not they are male I don;t ask, and don'r care. As long as it's sim,ple in game RP, it's cool, otherwise I may get a splitting heradache like the alligator in my av! image  lol

Believe it or not, some men go to the extreme to pretending to be a girl, "fall in love" in-game, then once you are married they confess they are a guy in RL.  I'm not a bad person, and I'm not gay, so I always tell the guy that I'm "sorry, but I'm not gay, even if I fell for you since we had things in common, you aren't who you are, you lied to get my attention, and I'm frustrated at that, not the fact that you were a guy roleplaying a girl." ... and we break up... (thank god too. lol)

I think that's what the author had in mind too.

Yeah know, it can be frustrating... especially when marrying 10 girls in a MMORPG and 7 of them were men in RL... it ruins your way at how you portray any women you cross in game for the rest of your MMORPG life. image

I don't think the problem is so much men pretending to be women, as much as people getting married in game taking it a wee bit to seriously. Which is why I just stay the hell away from that sort of thing altogether.

I wonder if sony banned gay marriage in EQ2.  image

As far as I know there were same sex marriages in EQ, so I don't know why there wouldn't be in EQ2

well, it's kinda hard to stay away from marriage in-game when it's the girl that's giving you signs that she's interested. Or when it's the girl who proposes to you!!! . You can either avoid it and she'll eventually just give up and marry your in-game best friend instead. lol image

But hey, when it's a real girl you're dealing with, you'll know it right away.  They never marry for "love" because they just want to have fun.  Marrying a girl in game should be because she's a good friend, you always spend time together, you both get along, and for roleplaying sakes, you two get married because come on, admit it... if you're a guy and you walk around with a hot girl and you actually get to call her your **wife** in public, you look freaking cool and l33t.  Sorry but admit it, it's true. image

And the girl takes that in consideration too.  You've been really friendly with her, so the least she can do is pretend to be your wife in a virtual world (because we all know it's pretend anyways, right?).

But if you're into it just for the Cybersex... you're definatly in the wrong game.  Just don't cyber with anyone if they accept to do it unless they accept to chat with you on MSN Messenger or Teamspeak afterwards because it's 100% of the time A MAN behind that cute blond sexy toon.

Everybody is going to have a girl character.

The male avatars all have female animations.  Which makes this game really only have girl characters.  Unless you think Male loving men,  male.

You know that many girls are afraid to play girls in the game because of the nerds trying to build relationship with them based on a silly game?

I can tell you that quite MANY girls didnt have the courage to play a female toon.

Maybe the attitude and the reaction against the manginas explain why they feel that way, no?  Dont you feel wrong to be hitting on girls that just want to play a game, not to be actually see as a prey by hunters?

Maybe, just maybe, if you want to see more girls actually playing females toons, not even remotedly harassing them would be a good idea?

*can figure some dimwit thinking of harassing males toons to see if they are females IRL*

I think the ''offended'' are more part of the problem then any other person here.

PS: I would love the voice in game myself, but you know many persons would keep it off right?  It will not be a tool to harass and find a ''prey'' for your loneliness.  In fact, I think it will be disable as a basic setting, dad dont want 7 years old kid to be in direct contact with lame old 40ish gross talking persons.

You know... an even better question would be...

How many females will play a male character? Or better yet...

How many females playing female characters will say they're guys, just so prepubescent boys stop asking "HEY R U A GRL? A/S/L CAN I SEE UR THINGIES."

I've played both male/female characters in mmorpg's, mainly because when I play a game it's not an "online representation of who I am." Hence the "roleplaying game" in the last part of mmoRPG. I agree with the post that mentioned if we all played what we were we'd be a bunch of human nerds lol. Playing a female character doesn't make me question my sexuality the same as playing a *insert animal biped creature here* doesn't make me question my humanity.

Here... look at it this way. If you question if the "female character" is really a female in RL... do yourself a favor and don't hit on it... chances are if it IS a female, it still won't have sex with you. If you're REALLY looking for love online... in a game... a game that promotes roleplaying... *blink* They have online personals, or chat rooms dedicated for that kind of stuff. I would also suggest something more "real" than crusing for digital booty.

Oh to answer the original question I'll have both male/female characters, that are made in every pencil paper rpg/mmorpg.

    WARNING! Sarcasm ahead.

Begone, you! There's no place for rational thought, or intelligence here! If you play a female character in a roleplaying game set in a fantasy world, you have to be gay/transgender/pederast/some other "abberant" group here! I'm to insecure to approach women in real life, so I hit on them in the less confrontational venue offered by online games, where I look like a towering he male rather than an average person. It causes me to question my sexuality when I find out I've been masturbating to conversations with what is really a man, and I'm pretty insecure about that as well. So please, take your well reasoned arguements, and go elsewhere, so I can rationalize my actions without little things like reality, which is cold and ugly, getting in the way.

    [/sarcasm]

    (well, sort of sarcastic, anyway)

I'm a guy and I've played both a male and a female character in swg. I was really into the roleplaying part of it, taking almost all the traits for my female character from my rl girlfriend... it was really fun to try and become someone totally different... and actually alot easier than being someone a-bit-like myself...

... until i found out most males i met in the game thought I was a female rl too (and gave all inclinations of thinking i was also a twilek and a dancer rl too image).

My character ended up with hanging out with almost only other female characters just to be able to roleplay a girl without the sexual topics popping up all the time and me having to tell them I was a guy.

I told what few people who asked my character that I was a guy and I told everyone she talked to that I was a roleplayer, but I wanted my character to be treated like a girl and people tend not to do
that when they know you're a guy rl.

All in all I had the most fun roleplaying my girl character I've ever had roleplaying anything PnP/CRPG you name it... once I learned to avoid the gaping teens seeking a hot date with my characters supposedly twilek-female-dancer-in-rl counterpart. And no

My guy char turned out to be more like a game-representation of myself and I didnt really get to roleplay him at all... just bashing and mashing and saying "go take a mission instead of begging me" all the time. Got kinda old real fast image

PS. first post btw. Hi all

A friend of mine in real-life played a girl in EQ1. He got married to a dude and the whole bit--mostly to get free stuff since the guy was much higher in level. He role-played the whole wedding, and when asked about the honey moon, all he'd tell me was they spent a nice evening in Lake Rathe. ::::04::

As things progressed, they didn't talk to each other as much, but they still had that weird role-playing love thing... Where he (the dude in game) would help him (my friend playing the lady in game) out when he needed it.

One time I asked my friend if the guy knew he was a dude in real life. My friend started sending tells to him. I don't remember the exchange of words exactly, but basically the guy told my friend that he didn't care and didn't want to know. He was content in role-playing the relationship in-game with a girl. That's all he'd ever see anyway. Real-life had no bearing at all in this case.

So anyone watching He's a Lady on TV? LOL...
