I replied in the Sandbox thread with the way to walk over claimed land, the consequences of doing it and why there's a toggle to stop you from doing it accidentally. =p @Cecropia: EvE has 350k-odd players, despite being a niche game, so the idea that niche games can't have relatively large subscribers is silly.
Right, ignore the fact that EVE is from 2003 (launched).

I'd count walking through the Siberian wilderness naked with only pig intestines to eat as pretty hardcore. Anything that requires REAL mental or physical stresses is pretty "hardcore".
Definitely more "hardcore" than sitting on your ass playing a video game. It's just a little ridiculous to see people that actually think playing certain games somehow makes them tough or better than someone else. That false sense of pride needs to go away and that person should probably reevaluate their life, because something is wrong. And i'm not raggin on all DF players here, it's just that there's a lot of people in a lot of games with this kind of mindset.

What you are essentially saying is Darkfall is not the favour of the majority. Calling them soft does not mean you are better. There is nothing better or worse, just different people with different preference. Since you admit you are the minority, that will do.
What you see as good factors, others see as weakness in game design or not fun. To each his own. There is nothing wrong in playing a game with small playerbase. There is no point trying to pretend that it makes you stronger or nerves of steel or whatever. Its just a game a few hundred are actively playing and the majority shuns.
3 basic remarks. 1. If NA has 1 DF server, the max capacity of that server is around 10 K players (of which a max of around 5K can be on line without the server being too stressed. The ratio of 1 server to around 10K players is always a good average (of which a max of 1/3 is always on btw). 2. Xfire stats can only be used IN a specific game trend ... BUT need to be a high enough sample to mean anyhting... That means all games below 1000 Xfire sample( players) have big error rates in their tracking. 3. Aion was the first game in 3 years since I have been tracking Xfire which has a very big sampling rate error. Meaning a clearly OVER sampled rate of Aion-xfire players. Easy to prove: EVE has a confirmed playerbase of around 300K subscriptions. Aion launched with around 400K players (take even 500K at launching week). Despite this, Aion has 4x more playing time and 3.5 more players than EVE. Clearly showing that between games you can't compare these days. I have to say it was the FIRST big game were Xfire was proven to be "oversampled", but in future launches it will certainly happen again. In the case of Aion (14NA.18EU servers), the "oversample" was done by an "extra" 5K Xfire players not representing the "normal" load. Be free to see where they come from ... ----- So conclusion for DF: 10K players is the max capacity for NA as there is 1 server and a pity for DF players XFire has far too few DF players to do the in game tracking (at least 1000 needed).
Interesting facts Zorndorf. I have long thought X-fire was pretty useless in tracking populations. The only thing its really useful for is trends and even that, as I said earlier, is debatable. I hadn't noticed the Aion/EvE numbers, but nice comparison, and something to think about. I also think far fewer players actually use x-fire now, then say a year ago.
EVERYBODY in the picture or game would have to have xfire installed AND RUNNING in order to track population, hours, etc. Obviosly this is/was not the case for the varioust reasons making the OP a nought.

Technically your point #1 is incorrect if we are to believe Aventurine.
They have said that their servers can handle 10k CONCURRENT players and upwards of 30k total accounts. Now I am not saying the 2 servers that DarkFall has are anywhere near the 10k concurrent, or even the 30k account mark... but that is the claim of the Devs. of what the servers can handle.

I can agree on that with different game preferences(or how you will call it) as long your side (and assuming you taking side of Strix argument here) take back these :
"Thus, I don't think we can use factors such as "indie" and "niche" as excuses for the game's shortcomings. " and
"Bad/incomplete/misguided games have a small playerbase. Be them PVE, PVP, whatever. Games don't stay around because of the fluctuating playerbase, those that come and go in about 1-3 months."
As long as your side blame the gamemechanics of Darkfall i will blame the mainstream carebears as too soft and as quitter who try and suck facing Darkfall's system and those gamemechanics.
We can continue on that or we agree on Darkfall has the right gameplay just for the niche playerbase. There are still players i know there playing from day 1, who have been killed enough, have lost enough, have build enough, have gathered and have fought much still play and enjoy the game without having posted a single line on forums, i call it hardcore.

Originally posted by DarthRaiden You theory of bad/incomplete games becomes falsified alone cause the example of WoW. Such a bad game has so many followers. Its not a good game, it just reinforces the insta gratification behaviour and alot of softies feel great and pay to feel great and get stomped in games like Darkfall On the other hand you mentioned the twich masters and FPS kings. Yes, they may not feel any challenge using twitch combat of DArkfall ,is just the RPG part of getting the skills that forced them on their knees
I would like to comment a little further about the two paragraphs above.
First, WoW: I don't like WoW. Never been able to play it for more than a few hours. However, it's hard to disagree with the fact that it is a solid title, technically very polished, and has catered to its costumers for a long time. And, again, generalization does not help your post. There are good players there. Or, do you doubt it?
Second: Grinding skill is the RPG part of DFO? Holy moley... Again, anyone can do that. Be it in the bloodwalls, in relative safety, or elsewhere.
My point is: success speaks for itself. You may not like it, but it is a cold, hard fact that no matter of spin-doctoring can alter. Do you have any doubt that Aventurine wants WoW's numbers? Or any other game/company, for that matter? The fact that they are continuously making the game easier, not harder, is proof that they realized that their core systems were flawed and scaring away costumers.
Expect a continuous move towards the "easy mode" route. And, like Shakespeare would aptly put, despair.
The "good" players of WoW must be those who don't like it themselves but play it because they have no time to play something really challenging. I know some IRL would like to play a sci-fi game like SWG Pre CU -and that is not EvE - but there isn't any so they play WoW to pass the time..however thats my theory.
Getting and raise skills is a essentially part of any RPG game. Obviously not everyone can do these. Posts on offciall forums with content like - why having skills at all, make alls skills available at day 1 to everyone- are coming often from FPS guys.
To your point, the measure of success can be different especially if it comes to numbers. A low budget production targeted at a niche playerbase can succeed with realtive small amount of numbers.
Latest actions from company show them liquid, potent and willing to continue, that signals success.
-NA launch, 2 expansions, new site, new paid liason team, job offerings to enhance the team etc.

What you call expansions, others call patches. What you call hardcore, I call a video game. What you call carebear, I also call a video game.
Now, I play WoW from time to time, but I am far from from carebear. Leave your theories locked in your head, and don't purport to know why people play what they do. You aren't psychic, you aren't all knowing.
And not that I am predicting or even hoping for DFOs downfall, I would never begrudge you your game, but unless you have access to their financial records and subscription numbers, don't proclaim success as of yet. That is something that only time will tell, and remember that many "tin gods" have fallen from their heavenly thrones (IE - many companies have started out in good health only to fall by the wayside).
Actions don't always match the reality, and that is the only truth to be found here. The moral of the story - quit the guru act and go play your game.
And there are several other videos out there showing easily hundreds of players fighting. I have heard and read many conflicting things both good and bad about Darkfall but its ability to host large scale battles is indisputable.

So, out of the blue, suddenly, miraculous, as a grace of god, a small indie inexperience development team with small budget, with trouble updating its web, with trouble avoiding double charging, with troubles fixing this and that, somehow, this company has a technology to host large scale battle that the multi-billion big companies cannot master?

the othe companies don't have trouble doing it, they chose not to. The largest single siege was about 500-700 total people, the largest siege day was easily 2k people over the course of an entire day. I have personally take part in at least 5 100ishv100ish sieges and 1 300-400 man, total, siege.

The only fairy tale is to believe a "big company" would care about its game. Look at WAR, AoC, WoW.....there is a reason why thay are made it in the easiest way possible. Classes and levels in a static world. Are you in the belive that there is a technology question involved that decision????
Its because its easy. If Blizzard wanted to, there could be 400 vs 400 PvP battles in WoW to. But they choose to not do it.
I think this is one of the most important questions today. The question why we see MMOs decline so fast.
"How come DF have big scale PvP battles and not WoW??" Most beople get angry with Aventurine for this, instead of Blizzard.

The game just wasn't for him obviously. No need to attack or belittle everyone that doesn't like it. You like the game, great, to each their own, but that doesn't make you better than anyone else. There's no need to get so riled up, because after all, it is just a game and you should play to have fun. Also, don't be so quick to jump on people for making suggestions about the game, a lot of people genuinely want to see improvement. I'm personally keeping an eye on upcoming patches in hopes that things get balanced out a little more and mechanics run a little smoother (my opinion of balance and game mechanics may differ from yours).
And for the people that come in just to trash the game and make no suggestions on improving it, why let them bother you and get so defensive? You're just falling into their trap, they like to see you squirm.
I honeslty have nothing to say about the topic other than the people that flame Df for sub numbers are trolls since Df is a niche game.
Good grief is it possible for anyone to speak in defense of DF without spinning the situation completely out of context? Even once?
No one is "flaming DF for sub numbers". The so-called "haters" are calling out *people posting on forums* for insisting the sub numbers are higher than they are, showing screenshots or videos with maybe 50 people shown at any given time and claiming it's proof that "hundreds were there", or even "thousands" in a couple cases.
And even at that, so much attention wouldn't be given to sub numbers if the rabid DF fans weren't so persistent in trying to prove how great the game is doing over the past several months.
FFS... after all this time I would have thought at least some people here would have learned the difference between "bashing the game" and "challenging comments made about the game" - the two are *not* the same... no matter how much some try to spin it that way.

All you've done is air your own personal grudge for everyone to enjoy.
X-Fire apparently has enough users to warrant a store... and let's not forget they are owned by MTV networks now. Someone, somewhere, considered them a good business move.
From what I can tell, they have about the same amount of users as your average MMO.

So, EvE is suddenly not niche because it's been out for six years?
Try harder.

What other fairy tales do you have? Its bedtime for my kids. I need some more.

the othe companies don't have trouble doing it, they chose not to. The largest single siege was about 500-700 total people, the largest siege day was easily 2k people over the course of an entire day. I have personally take part in at least 5 100ishv100ish sieges and 1 300-400 man, total, siege.

Because i never claimed to be hardcore, or better than anyone (which is what a lot of your posts imply). I think people might tolerate you a little more if you stopped acting superior to everyone. It's a bit hard to take someone seriously when they think too seriously about themselves, or some game. Whatever, just sayin.

Diverse people should then stop accuse Darkfall's gamemechanics if they aren't able to master them. The niche target playerbase is willing to use these gamemechanics and welcome's its rules.
The other guy making the quit topic today , pretty much demonstates my point btw. He is a quitter, because he loosed too much to vet players in the first 2 weeks and got attacked everywhere. Same time i know players with patience and nerves out steel who joined late the game and still play. Obviously there are those who can stand the heat and others who don't.

EvE at its lowest-peak time still surpasses Darkfail's current sub.
Aventurine made a relatively small MMORPG that is not the for everyone, we know that know, why the bashing, go bash something else... -.-'

Ok, i'm stepping off my soapbox now.

Not to be harsh... but the title of your thread is incorrect.
Your title says "More players in this picture than on X-Fire total"
X-Fire for DarkFall has 77 users
The picture above has between 40-50 users... just saying.
he said one side
The title says "in this picture"... The picture shows what it shows.
DF folks have now moved on to spinning screenshots as well?
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
All you've done is air your own personal grudge for everyone to enjoy.
X-Fire apparently has enough users to warrant a store... and let's not forget they are owned by MTV networks now. Someone, somewhere, considered them a good business move.
From what I can tell, they have about the same amount of users as your average MMO.
"Wishes and whims are not facts, nor are they a means to discovering them."
Can you please post a current screenshot of your favorite MMO showing at least the same amount of players like shown in screenshot provided by OP.
thanks
