Yes. And I responded telling you why that might not be such a bad idea; despite the hostility. Even if you don't have this issue, obviously, it's a huge problem for some others.
No, you responded by accusing me of using my MMO as a dating site. Which is why I asked where you got such an idiot idea.
I did not accuse you, personally, of anything. Calm down.
Oh, perhaps you could clarify this quote you directed at me:

What is that if not an accusation? The point I made was that many have hostility to guys playing female toons because so many have used it as a ploy to get free stuff. If you deny that fact then address the supposition. But dont start making up bullshit accusations. You lose all credibility.
If you read my post again you see that I was speaking of those types of people, i.e., people that care about such things. I did not mean you personally. Don't be so sensitive.
I can see both sides of this. I do not think voice changers should be used for general gaming. Instead, have a strictly RP sever that has voice changers so that everyone playing knows if your on that server that is the case. That way, it is expected, and if I want to go on a server and sound like Darth Vader and say " Luke I am your father." or sound like schwarzenegger and say, " I'll be back." I can because that is something I could never do for real. Have regular voice chat on the other servers. I can see how gender does matter from a female perspective. To have a guy pretend to be a girl and "invade" our inner circles is not only intrusive, it is insulting. Girls ARE different than guys. We tell each other everything. We talk about things with each each other we never would with men and men should not be coming in to spy on us! Men are not allowed in womens restrooms, and they should not be allowed in our " girl" talk. They can go have their own conversations with the boys, and allow us our space as well. Men should not be disguising themselvesas females to sneak up on us. Men should not be disguising themselves as women to give us a bad reputation by fondling their pixels, scamming sad lonely men, or to " trick" someone. No, That is just not right. I think not only should voice chat be implemented in regular gaming, but cams as well. My guild used cam or in person interviews for recruits only. This was a good practice because you can really determine their personality and get to know a person prior to allowing their character into the guild.
Really? Honestly? As I've stated here, I'm a 30 year old married male who has never played a female character.
I don't care at all if some guy wants to impersonate a woman in guild chat. I treat men and women the same in MMOs, as I think it should be.
As for you saying men should not be allowed to "trick" someone - I agree. Neither should women. But sad, lonely people seem to always find a way to be tricked and manipulated in this life, one way or another. Might as well be online where minimal damage can be done...
(That was tongue in cheek for those who don't get my sense of humor.)
Really what? What exactly are you addressing?
You just proved my point that Men are different than women. Men do not care if the person they are talking to is a male or female, but alot of women do. Women talk to women different than they do men. Women usually have their guard up around men, and discuss more personal issues among women. To have a man try to impersonate us and breach the "gender barrier" by thinking they have a right to be included in conversations they know nothing about is just messed up. When men know what it is like to have a period, have their feet hurting from dancing in heels all night, and break out into hives from a Mary Kay makeover party they can then be invited to join our conversations, but as themselves, not as a female impersonater.
Let me guess - you're really young. When you're over the age of 30 you'll find that men and women don't really keep their "guard up" like that. I have male and female friends I talk to about everything.
So does my wife.
My wife doesn't care if men come in to her "female" conversations. (I actually read this post to her and she just laughed, asking, "How old is the poster of that?")
When you graduate from school, these things matter much less. And really, how many men do you think are making girl characters so they can listen in on girl talk? Do you personally know of any? I sure as Hell don't.
If you're a man who wants to impersonate a woman so you can listen to a woman talk about retaining water, um, buddy, more power to ya... I've never met a guy like that in my life.
I guess it depends on the woman. I have been out of schoolfor quite some time. LOL. I still hang out with my girlfriends, we still keep secrets from the men, as does my Mother, and Grandmother as well. Maybe it is just how some of us were raised. And yes, I have known a few guys that pretended to be girls just to find out what was going on. When I first started playing MMO's , we had a "Female only guild". Guys often tried to pretend to be girls to get in and it was so sad when they were busted. Usually they would slip up somewhere, besides they couldn't pull it off at a real guild party.
I guess the core difference is not whether or not someone is using the game as a dating site, or their age,but rather whether or not they separate game from the rest of their life. Some do, some don;t. When you actually hang out and do things for real with guild mates it is different than just some anonomous person online. Having gone fishing, had parties, gone clubbing, gone to concerts, gone shopping, gone to the movies ( all as friends) with guild members it puts things in a different light. The world is a small place, I do not believe in " make believe". Some people treat players as strangers, some treat them as friends, there is a difference.
Actually, no, it's maturity. I've met some of my fellow guild members across various games and made friendships that endure to this day. Their gender continued to not really matter to me. Perhaps it is "how I was raised" but personally, I enjoy my relationships with both men and women, and see very little difference in the way we interact together.
I think another poster summed it up best when he said at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to me. My wife would like a chat filter to pretend to be a guy for rp and other purposes - but aside from that, it's not something that really matters to me. If I get to know a person their gender ultimately won't matter when I meet them, if ever, in "real life."
I love it when people use the term " maturity". It has everything to do with personality. You may feel it is "immature" to not want to hang out with people that some of us consider mentally unstable, lame, a self centered pitty party.. but for some of us life is too short to waste it on a drama queen.
Some of us do not enjoy soap operas, watch television, or even care about THAT NONSENSE. You laugh, you cry or you die and If you are still laughing life is good. It is a choice on how you want to spend your time on this earth, and some of us choose not to waste it wallowing in drama. Life throws out enough drama, to not have people create it themselves. That is how some of us see it. There are better things to do. To me all that BS, is just that ...BS wasting my time. Basically unless it is an emergency, I don;t want to hear about someones " I am a girl trapped in a mans body" nonsense. LOL!
Edit- What I mean by emergency: say some freak serial killer kidnapped a girl and placed her inside a male cadaver, that would be considered an emergency .. but some mentally twisted dude pulling a Marilyn Manson .. that is his problem, please keep it away from me. LOL
At last years fanfest CCP mentioned that they would be adding voice filters in Incarna so you could alter your voice, even to sound like the opposite gender. I like this, and will most certainly use it because me avatar is female and I want her to speak accordingly. This does not mean I have secret wish of being female, but simply, that I enjoy the immersing into the life of my avatar while at the same time keep a strict separation between me and my avatar. Do you guys foresee some problems, when it becomes more natural for people to alter the voice as games implements easy access to such features, and it is no longer only done by true oddballs?
I dunno, I admit I like to create female avatars, but ... I always always say I'm a guy IRL. Masking your voice like a female ... sounds gay to me. (not that there is anything wrong with it...of course)
Has anyone ever tried even the most state-of-the-art voice changers? They are not convincing, in my experience. I can't imagine any serious confusion being a problem for a few years to come. And when it does occur, why care?
Not that they would matter all that much considering the best guilds are always off site. Guilds use cams & their own voice programs anyways and if your not willing to play by the guilds rules, you won;t be accepted anyhow. It isn;t like we use their in game chat options all that much because ALL in game chat blows chunks as it is. So if some dude was pretending to be a girl, as soon as they did a guild interview they wouldn;t make it pass step one anyways so it wouldn;t matter.
It only matters to those "in game only guilds" which everyone knows they are full of creeps so why would anyone want to do that? LMAO
I never join guilds. Just not my thing. Often group with people in guilds, just not a joiner.
LOL! No, I have never been in a guild remotely like that. College guilds are a bit different. They are started on campus, with people you actually hang out with and expand, but have strict "out of game requirements". The only person from "The Guild" show that would have even had a remote possibility of being admitted to our guild would have been the Asian chic. We actually had a girl in our guild that reminded me of her. But like I said before, Having strict personality requirements and weeding out the over emotional bi polar, kids, and creepy people made for a much better group in and out of game.
Our applicants had to go through a video or in person interview before even being allowed to "tag" along on events. They actually had to attend out of game events before being admited. ( get them drunk and see how they REALLY are)
Lol...what the hell.
In my day they called those things fraternities and sororities. And most of them didn't involve MMORPGs, any of the good ones anyway.

This voice thing is just not my cup of tea.
That is perfectly fine. That just shows where you put your personal line.
It is quite evident from this thread that there is far from a common consensus where this line should be put. I never imagined the question would result in such a massive amount of responses. I guess it is because we somehow all can see more than one side to the case, at least I hope that.
Btw. I always tell my real gender, but not unless asked. It seems like irrelevant information to me, and I do not ask about other peoples gender either. I generally stay my self and my avatars as far away of any sexual related involvements as possible.
Again, dont' try to turn an MMORPG into Match.com and you'll have no worries.
Spot on 100%.

I havent heard the latest tech, but it would surprise me if it worked all that well. There's a lot more to the difference between male and female voices than pitch. Usually adjusting pitch alone just sounds wierd, but anything more is too complex for software to do without lots of manual tweaking based on individual voice differences.
So yeah, this whole discussion is mostly just academic. It won't really be an issue. I think it would be more realistically used as just a minor disguise, so that guys can make their voices sound more gruff, gravelly, cartoonishly demonic, and that sort of thing.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I consider it immature to judge people based on gender, and to specifically treat people differently, because of gender, in an MMO.
I consider it self-preservation to not want to spend time with mentally unstable people - that's your business. I don't go out of my way to hang out with mentally unstable people, either.
Huge difference. I have no problem with you choosing to not spend your time with, say, a bi-polar person. I've known a few and they were a handful. That's more a choice in how much compassion and time you want to spend on another human being.
But gender? Gender is just the dangly bits you have (or lack) between your legs. Males and females can interact as friends and be perfectly mentally sane. I have a very wide, mixed group of friends - so does my wife. In fact, my wife and I usually hang out together when we go out. After ten years of marriage, we're still in love, you see, so we enjoy spending time together.
We don't do "girls nights outs" or "guys nights out" - that's for single people, i.e., kid stuff. We spend our time together in a mixed group and I treat people based on their maturity and their personality, not their gender.
This could be why I have no problem interacting with men or women in my real life or in my guilds; and this also could be why it's not a big deal to me what gender somebody wants to pretend to be online. If you pretend to be a woman online and we meet in real life and you're a man I might be a little surprised but that would be about it - mild surprise, then nothing.
You people take gender way too seriously. There are two categories of people who don't want this:
1) Young men who use the site as a dating service, or a way to pick up women - these are usually very sensitive dudes that need to know that they can lavish gifts, etc., on female avatars and know that they really ARE women because, hey, anything else might be, like, teh ghey.
2) Young women who need to feel "special" and are fiercely protective of their "mythical unicorn" status in MMO's, they want men to know they are women and they want to make darn sure that nobody else can pretend to be a woman.

I consider it immature to judge people based on gender, and to specifically treat people differently, because of gender, in an MMO.
It makes no difference in an MMO or anywhere else. Everyone treats people different based on their personality. Personality is a part of their genetic makeup as well as gender. Gender plays a huge part in a persons personality.
I consider it self-preservation to not want to spend time with mentally unstable people - that's your business. I don't go out of my way to hang out with mentally unstable people, either.
Yes, it is self- preservation. But it is also a matter of opinion on what is " stable" and what is not.
Huge difference. I have no problem with you choosing to not spend your time with, say, a bi-polar person. I've known a few and they were a handful. That's more a choice in how much compassion and time you want to spend on another human being.
That is not a matter of compassion, it is a matter of priority of compassion. Anyone who knows me on this site, also knows I spend the majority of myu time volunteering in my community. I do not see this as a compassion issue, but rather whether or not you want to waste that much time helping someone else waste time rather than doing something really important.
But gender? Gender is just the dangly bits you have (or lack) between your legs. Males and females can interact as friends and be perfectly mentally sane. I have a very wide, mixed group of friends - so does my wife. In fact, my wife and I usually hang out together when we go out. After ten years of marriage, we're still in love, you see, so we enjoy spending time together.
what makes a woman and what makes a man is far more than what " hangs between your legs" women use differnt parts of their brain, have different life expierance, and often think, feel and act much different than men. To say it is all about what is between your legs is superficial.
We don't do "girls nights outs" or "guys nights out" - that's for single people, i.e., kid stuff. We spend our time together in a mixed group and I treat people based on their maturity and their personality, not their gender.
Oh so my grandparents and parents are single people after many years of marriage? My grandmother still has bridge nights with the girls and my grandfather still has a poker night. Glad to know they are still kids after so many years. It has nothing to do with whether or not your mature, or whether or not you are single, it has everything to do with " personal space" and "independence".
I see their relationships as healthier because they are secure enough in their relationship to not have a problem with the other going out even after many years of marriage. Not allowing the spouse out of your site seems to be an insecurity and trust issue.
I do not see why that has anything to do with the other, but if you say so ...

Nice way to stereotype and group people by a very narrowminded view. Not everyone agrees with you, not everyone fits into either of these catagories, and not everyone has to have some " other issue" to have an issue with people pretending to be something their not, even in a game. Some of us just simply like to " keep it real."
I think the only people that have an issue with this are the ones that would use an MMORPG to find a mate. MMORPG's are not dating or match making services...quit thinking of them as such.
I think the only people that have an issue with this are the ones that would use an MMORPG to find a mate. MMORPG's are not dating or match making services...quit thinking of them as such.
I don;t think that is the case Teala, I mean I am definately not looking for a mate in game or online at all ... I enjoy hanging with my friends but that is completely different than finding a "mate". I think the core difference is whether or not some people find it acceptable to lie or pretend to be something they are not . Basically, I wouldn;t even want a friend that would lie or misrepresent themselves as such. I think it has more to do with people that want to keep things real, and those who like to completely submerge themselves in a fantasy. Those things don;t mix well together. That is why I think RP specific servers are necessary in any mmorpg. It makes it so everyone on that server is playing the same game!
I think the only people that have an issue with this are the ones that would use an MMORPG to find a mate. MMORPG's are not dating or match making services...quit thinking of them as such.
There is no particular use to this feature. I understand why people want to play females and such, but what is the point of changing your voice?

It's all about the Role playing. SOme people do it, and some don't. That is the core conflict here. RP only servers are the only way to really solve the conflict, as far as I can tell.
I do not see why that has anything to do with the other, but if you say so ...
Nice way to stereotype and group people by a very narrowminded view. Not everyone agrees with you, not everyone fits into either of these catagories, and not everyone has to have some " other issue" to have an issue with people pretending to be something their not, even in a game. Some of us just simply like to " keep it real."
MMORPG does not equal excuse to lie.
Nice job mixing "gender sterotypes, that people and media force onto their kids" with actual psychological differences.
Sorry, but as a male feminist, this whole things deeply disturbs me.
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.

I think you misunderstood. I myself ,was raised building forts, throwing rocks and playing in the dirt.
Has nothing to with that at all. It has to do with core thinking, process of information, and life experience. That is different than " some boys like to go shopping and some girls don't." LOL
Well I think the person roleplaying should be forthright and telling others their real gender. If they lie that is another story. But as a tool for roleplaying purposes I see no problem with it.

Yeah, um... Actually, no. Women and men think and process information in the exact same way. It's just the social norms that lead them to react differently.
Listen, I involuntary jump and cover my ears, when I hear loud sounds close by. I'm prone to mannerisms a lot of people descirbed as "womanish". Last time I checked, all the plumbing is in place and I'm not (at least in a normal sense) gay.
My girlfriend, on the other hand, wears leather jackets, sits with her legs spread wide across, hates kids and mothers with a passion and one of her favourite videogames is God of War.
Okay, she likes puppies and kittens. But so do I.
Clearly we think, act and have "ilfe experiences" that fall into your worldview!
Good luck with that...

False. Women and men do Not process information the same way. It is not a matter of " worldview", it is a matter of women and men are built different and use different sections of their brains. This is not a matter of likes and dislikes, it is a matter of real physical differences that cause real neurological differences.
. "That men and women are different, everyone knows that
But, aside from external anatomical and primary and secondary sexual differences, scientists know also that there are many other subtle differences in the way the brains from men and women process language, information, emotion, cognition, etc. "
" What was once speculation is now being confirmed by scientists: the brains of women and men are different in more ways than one."
Discoveries by scientists over the past 10 years have elucidated biological sex differences in brain structure, chemistry and function. “These variations occur throughout the brain, in regions involved in language, memory, emotion, vision, hearing and navigation,” explains Larry Cahill, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine.

Human brain forms until they're late teens, or so. Thus upbringing, social standarts and peer pressure all play a great role in the formation of psyche. So... Logic!

Oh how could I forget .. that Science fails to use Logic ...IF you say so. Sorry, the debate is over. It has been scientifically proven that men and women process information different. No matter how many times you tell yourself otherwise, it doesn;t change that it is.
I grabbed the top 5 sites that came up in google... Though if you wish, you can go read the medical journals and they will tell you the exact same thing. You are in denial. See it for what it is.
"A study from UC Irvine found there to be a difference between men and women in certain areas of the brain. Women were shown to have significantly larger (nearly 10 times the amount of) “white matter” in their brains, whereas men had significantly larger (nearly 6.5 times the amount of) “grey matter” in their brains.
Grey matter represents “information processing” and white matter represents “networking” or “connections between processing systems.”
In easier terms, men may be better at math because it involves a localized process, and women may be better at communicating because it involves the integration of information."

300 years ago, many famous doctors would tell you, that bloodletting is the way to go. 100 years ago, Einstein's theories would be laughed away. Sometimes science does fail at basic logic, in favor of cheap publicity.
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
Nice job mixing "gender sterotypes, that people and media force onto their kids" with actual psychological differences.
Sorry, but as a male feminist, this whole things deeply disturbs me.
There are actual physical and psychological differnces, and it is not someone elses fault if you are unable to accept that. Sorry to burst your bubble.
There are. But not to the extent YOU are thinking. Go on, try talking to any girl, who was raised "boyishly". Have a girlfriend like that myself, what more proof do you need?
I think you misunderstood. I myself ,was raised building forts, throwing rocks and playing in the dirt.
Has nothing to with that at all. It has to do with core thinking, process of information, and life experience. That is different than " some boys like to go shopping and some girls don't." LOL

Thank you, I needed a good laugh. It has been a rough week.. 3:30 am and still working. LOL

Really?
LOL
I dunno, I admit I like to create female avatars, but ... I always always say I'm a guy IRL. Masking your voice like a female ... sounds gay to me. (not that there is anything wrong with it...of course)
This voice thing is just not my cup of tea.
WTB Shadowbane 2
I guess you like this sort of play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grCTXGW3sxQLOL!
Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.
I dunno, I admit I like to create female avatars, but ... I always always say I'm a guy IRL. Masking your voice like a female ... sounds gay to me. (not that there is anything wrong with it...of course)
This voice thing is just not my cup of tea.
Spot on 100%.
"There is a certain undeniable power in the void; within lies an unspoken promise of greatness, the shadowy truth that man is ruled by fear not of what is seen, but of what he perceives is seen beyond."
Really? Honestly? As I've stated here, I'm a 30 year old married male who has never played a female character.

Everyone else guys?
We honestly don't care.
Really? Honestly? As I've stated here, I'm a 30 year old married male who has never played a female character.

MMORPG does not equal excuse to lie.
There is no particular use to this feature. I understand why people want to play females and such, but what is the point of changing your voice?

It's all about the Role playing. SOme people do it, and some don't. That is the core conflict here. RP only servers are the only way to really solve the conflict, as far as I can tell.
I do not see why that has anything to do with the other, but if you say so ...

Using Brain Imaging To Demonstrate Male / Female Differences
"A study from UC Irvine found there to be a difference between men and women in certain areas of the brain. Women were shown to have significantly larger (nearly 10 times the amount of) “white matter” in their brains, whereas men had significantly larger (nearly 6.5 times the amount of) “grey matter” in their brains.
Grey matter represents “information processing” and white matter represents “networking” or “connections between processing systems.”
In easier terms, men may be better at math because it involves a localized process, and women may be better at communicating because it involves the integration of information."

Mind and behavior -Are There Differences between the Brains of Males and Females?
" What was once speculation is now being confirmed by scientists: the brains of women and men are different in more ways than one."
Discoveries by scientists over the past 10 years have elucidated biological sex differences in brain structure, chemistry and function. “These variations occur throughout the brain, in regions involved in language, memory, emotion, vision, hearing and navigation,” explains Larry Cahill, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine.

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
MMORPG does not equal excuse to lie.
Nice job mixing "gender sterotypes, that people and media force onto their kids" with actual psychological differences.
Sorry, but as a male feminist, this whole things deeply disturbs me.
