Klingons are playable as PvP only when the game launches. I've seen the term "monster play" bandied about on several boards and I think this fits the definition 100%. That alone confirms this game will not have decent faction based PvP, nor will it contain an in-depth skill or resource gathering system.
If you think I'm incorrect then consider that an expansion that made another race (Klingons) playable as a faction would be at a 6-9 month disadvantage from day 1 if the game had any in-depth crafting or skill based system. I'd gladly take on the challenge if it were going to happen, but it's not.
Cryptic is going to proudly take the title from SOE; how fast can you trash a fantastic IP? What a shame....
Feel free to watch the podcast as a STO dev confirms the information.

I'm going to ballpark it at around 100k initial subs will now vanish as a result of this.

Sorry to say it. But, that was the race I was going to play. I still find the game interesting, but I will wait until an expansion adds Klingons as a playable race. I have very happy I did not pre-order this game!

I know i'm not worth much but i'm now NO LONGER interested in the game. I hate ANY game that forces me into PvP. I wanted to play klingon and do as the klingons do, do battle when i wish or if i'm in enemy territory. Knowing there's no option is not a good idea. Bye Bye STO. Oh well i knew it was too good to be true that there'd be a good star trek based mmo...
eh same here no klingons as normal race, no interest
Certainly makes me want to rethink this one....
Reminds me of what happened with City of Heroes, no Villains. After they added Villains, a lot of people had already learned the hero side, and they leveled quickly as Villains.

2024: 47 years on the Net.
Like it or not, I have a feeling this game is going to make history.... Sadly not good history. It's going to be the first f many mass produced mmo games like the ones that have been around on consoles since the Atari.
You know what I'm talking about. All those games that have 0 unique aspects and are just reskinned generic games based on whatever the flavor of the moment is. If STO is like this, I hope it makes AutoAssualt look like an amazing success. I'm not a fan of Star Trek, but I am a scifi fan and I was definitely looking forward to this game until I started looking into it a little more.
Sad, Star Trek is a massive and well developed IP and could have made for an amazing game for all fans of the scifi genre.

Also they knew what they were in for when they decided to take up the reins and make a Star Trek based mmo. There are millions of fans out there that grew up with star trek, and have friends and families which love the series. So this COULD HAVE been their very first mmo. This would've brought in subs out of no where. They would have literally a few hundred thousand subs outta no where all going out and buying their game. NOW however, people who are fans of the game won't go out and tell their friends of it. They won't try it themselves, and alot will talk about how bad it is. So it seems that cryptic's just shot themselves in the foot again. All i can say is gg cryptic and i'm not going to waste my money/time on a game that will scar my childhood memories of my entire family sitting around the tv to watch the latest star trek.
When i'm talking about people i'm talking about the casual market+some. Star treks' familiar and it could've brought in people who barely use a computer just because they loved the series. Now i hope the game burns in a fiery inferno.
Well said. It sadly looks like they are only interested in milking the cash cow that is the Star Trek fan base.

"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Well, I didn't see this coming.
I think you people need to honestly ask yourself this question,if the game was called Red Feather or Spearcraft would you even consider this game?
Cryptic is IMO a very weak developer and if you look at their portfolio they surround their entire operation around known characters,so they are banking on making a profit off the name alone rather than quality.A developer that is in their own words a "MMORPG developer" would be CREATING games not using known IP characters to cash in on,especially if they have confidence in their ability.
These guys are just once again trying to cash in on a known identity witch is STO,and it was not even their game, but i am sure when they acquired the rights ,it was purely because of the name/title.
If you step back from the NAME/TITLE then i think you will realize the actual effort and type of game you are going to receive from these guys.
BTW...don't knock SOE they are responsible for probably 90% of MMORPG mechanics you see in games, and most developers have chosen to outright copy their formula's for game design.SOE also runs the Playstation witch is still number one in the world,MOST of their elite staff is working for games in their console division,so quit the SOE bashing ,they produce/publish more good games than all other developers have games in total.Bashing SOE is just plain ignorance.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
No pvp means instant fail!!!
What did the mean devs do with my pvp?!?!
Just because an MMOG doesn't pander to the way that you like to play, does not automatically mean that it is going to fail in any way. I just really wish people would get out of the mindset that MMOGs have to be made in XYZ formula or that it has to be made the way that they like to be successful. It's either that or people that post things like this have the conceit that a developer will read what they write and suddenly say, "Oh sh@t we better listen to this guy or we're going to FAIL!!!"
The sad thing is that I think that in some ways the doomsayers in this forum are right. I would have liked to see the PvP be better and the Klingons be a 100% playable race at launch, but I don't for one second think it's going to make STO a "bad" game or a failure. Truthfully when I think of a Star trek MMOG I really think of a PvE game first and foremost, so I don't think it's going to make much of a difference.

Just watched this interview. Very unfortunate. Have to disagree with Daniel Stahl's assessment that Klingon play isn't the very much in line with LOTRO's Monsterplay. Since there won't be any "episodic" type content like there is for the Federation, and contrary to Stahl's understanding the Monster Play of LOTRO is more than just a few abilities you get and does have a progression system (at least it did when I played), they do in deed sound alot alike to me.
Was on the fence because of the RMT/item shop rumors but if those worked out in a favorable way for me I was going to play on the Klingon side. Now I guess I'll go to waiting patiently for the next information about World of Darkness Online.

Not all klingons are warriors and fighters. Some of the most famous from the series were tacticians on the what is going to be in this game PvE and also some didnt' fight at all. Theyr'e going to break the game. It's simple the poster above obviously doesn't understand how royally bad this game's going to be.
Edit: 2 posts above. Seems someone posted a second before me or well how many ever seconds whatever. Point is blue text guy above me.
It wouldn't make any sense in my opinion to make the Klingon level up like the Federation doing exploration, aid, science or whatever missions. Klingons aren't interested in those niceties, so basing most of their leveling on PvP and Klingon Houses PvP missions does make sense. He did say they are planning to add different missions in including maybe some exploration (Gensis) later, just hope any exploration is for extortion or conquest to give it the Klingon flavor. He did say the Klingons were definetly not like the monster mode of Lords of the Ring online, and that they had all the complexity of their Federation counter parts. Pretty much sums up their not "monster mode" to me anyways. Would I like more content for Klingons? Of course, more content always better no matter which faction is being played, but not a game buster for me!
BTW...don't knock SOE they are responsible for probably 90% of MMORPG mechanics you see in games, and most developers have chosen to outright copy their formula's for game design.
I was not trying to knock developers at SOE for their intelligence or engineering acumen. I was comparing the two in terms of overall common sense which is obviously non-existent.
I'm going to borrow from a quote I once read. SOE and Cryptic remind me of what would happen if the government made cars; you would get 2 miles to a gallon and need an oil change every 3 blocks.
They both will get to share the glory of ruining an IP with unlimited upside....
wow, that's absolutely amazing.
Can't play klingons?
My only thought is that they will do what they did with City of Heroes and that is add City of Villains afterward.
So I imagine klingons might come at some point.
Though (without seeing the video) I suppose they are trying to do what Turbine did with lotro which is tell the story from the protagonists side. Which in the case of Star Trek is the Federation.

Given Cryptic's track record of releasing ultra-casual MMOs nearly devoid of content (City of Heroes at launch and 1-2 years after), I'll be waiting six months after release to see if STO has anything going for it other than fancy character creation. I'm not going to get worked up about every nitty-gritty detail (PvP-only Klingons, f'rex) like some of you guys; if the game seems to be decent by August 2010, I'll try it. If it seems to be a piece of shit in August 2010 (as 90% of MMOs are six months after launch), I'll pass.

Answer to topic question, I suppose around....twenty to thirty thousand. Maybe more, maybe less.
Sad thing is, there's still a damn sight more people who want to play as feds who will be like, 'Oh well, it'll come eventually'. Which im sorry to say, i kind of am. To be honest i wanted to be in the Romulan faction, so i guess the klingon fans can jump on board my ship, the U.S.S Gottawaitforit. Until then, i'll gladly play as the federation.
Afterall, could you ever see a star trek show based on a klingon crew and actually having any success? I dont. So i can understand why the episode content for the feds was much easier to make than the klingons episodic content. It does make sense to make them PvP orientated, but no PvE at all is just awful. I hope to god they actually get some nice things or the klingon players are going to see Cryptic personified in federation players and unleash their anger on us all. Which doesn't look good for us. I think some feds will end up being klingon stress balls in PvP to vent their anger over this.
But hey, there's always hope.
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3
This seems like a really bad call.
In my opinion, even going with a single faction would be better than launching with a half-hearted version of a faction. This will cut down variety quite badly, because it will have a severe impact on PVP, too.
And to think we were even discussing whether it should be open RVR or zoned or free for all PVP in another thread! Can you imagine RVR where one side does not have PVE content at all, while the other is drowning in it? One "Realm" can win just by not showing up in battlefield! That would be a totally new strategy as far as wars go... :P
Now the PVP prospect sounds somewhat like monster play indeed.
Having one faction with both play style options, and one with only PvP will destroy faction balance.

SOE does NOT run Playstation - The Playstation consoles are handled by SCE: Sony Computer Entertainment. It is a completely separate division staffed by completely different people. And for the record, the great majority of people responsible for the mmo mechanics which have been so copied by others no longer work at SOE - they moved on not long after Everquest 1, after the Velious Expansion rolled out. And ever since then, everything SOE has done has been mediocre success at best and abysmal failure at worst. Be careful of accusing others of ignorance when you're potentially ignorant yourself.
They'll probably make the klingons OP'd. I dont know though, im sure theres some hardcore fans who will stay play klingon religiously. Alot of fed players i know want to just do their own thing and may hardly ever touch PvP. So, just depends on what players decide to do.

It was kinda expected. Another great IP trashed by a worthless company. A shame...

Name an SOE MMO that has shut down since EQ1. abysmal failure would be the shutting down of a game and since SOE have not done that, to my knowledge, they haven't had any abysmal failures. SWG was a success until NGE but even today enough people play and enjoy the game to make enough to keep the game running. SOE aren't as bad as most people make them out to be.
Doomsayers? An MMORPG with only ONE faction is weak at best, laughable at worst. It does not neccessarily has to do anything with PvP as that second faction could be all about PvE. So your excuse of STO as PvE game is not enough to exclude the Klingons as playable faction.
This game = FAIL
