In every game I prefer to play 'the bad guys'. I just like to be different from typical 'I'm hero saving world after killing that 10 rats in neighbourhood' crowd.
The sad thing is that I think that in some ways the doomsayers in this forum are right. I would have liked to see the PvP be better and the Klingons be a 100% playable race at launch, but I don't for one second think it's going to make STO a "bad" game or a failure. Truthfully when I think of a Star trek MMOG I really think of a PvE game first and foremost, so I don't think it's going to make much of a difference.
Doomsayers? An MMORPG with only ONE faction is weak at best, laughable at worst. It does not neccessarily has to do anything with PvP as that second faction could be all about PvE. So your excuse of STO as PvE game is not enough to exclude the Klingons as playable faction.
This game = FAIL
Trouble is, just because a game doesn't tick everything in the 'what i think an mmo needs to have' catagory, doesn't mean it wont be a game people will play. It may fail in some peoples eyes, yours included, but in others, it will be a long awaited decent star trek game. It's also impossible to make a completely fair review on a game when its not complete.
Can't get my head round how people say FAIL, to nearly any game they dont like. Not that people dont know the definition of the word, but they need to remember when its applicable.

BTW...don't knock SOE they are responsible for probably 90% of MMORPG mechanics you see in games, and most developers have chosen to outright copy their formula's for game design.SOE also runs the Playstation witch is still number one in the world,MOST of their elite staff is working for games in their console division,so quit the SOE bashing ,they produce/publish more good games than all other developers have games in total.Bashing SOE is just plain ignorance.
SOE does NOT run Playstation - The Playstation consoles are handled by SCE: Sony Computer Entertainment. It is a completely separate division staffed by completely different people. And for the record, the great majority of people responsible for the mmo mechanics which have been so copied by others no longer work at SOE - they moved on not long after Everquest 1, after the Velious Expansion rolled out. And ever since then, everything SOE has done has been mediocre success at best and abysmal failure at worst. Be careful of accusing others of ignorance when you're potentially ignorant yourself.
Name an SOE MMO that has shut down since EQ1. abysmal failure would be the shutting down of a game and since SOE have not done that, to my knowledge, they haven't had any abysmal failures. SWG was a success until NGE but even today enough people play and enjoy the game to make enough to keep the game running. SOE aren't as bad as most people make them out to be.

And... because I know someone's going to say it... No, SOE didn't develop MxO, Monolith did, and ran it for a time before it was sold to SOE.
However, at that point, they became its custodians and developers and had been so - at least post launch - for far longer than Monolith was. In that role, they did very little with it and eventually shut it down completely.
So yes, SOE has had a game shut down post EQ1.

Well, i for one am not going to write a company off based on past games (Champions) because some of them were quite popular (City of Heroes). But past is past, it doesn't matter now. It's a clean slate, and im going to wait until i get my hands on it before i decide if i keep paying them or not. I have a feeling i will, because despite all the bad thing's the naysayers on here keep pointing out, few people are pointing out what is good, when quite frankly, there is. It's a star trek experience, weather it lacks what you define as the perfect experience, it will still be the best one out there. I will definately try it, explore the key sites, walk around DS9 to meet up with mates and go stir up trouble with some innocent species, kirk style.

Having only one playable faction in an MMORPG is a fail. Its like a magic system where you can only cast one spell or a melee that can only use one weapon. It just shows how lazy and/or desperate the devs are to release the game.
And seeing as Champions Online has became a FAIL then it is not unlikey that this game will be as well. And by fail I mean less than 100k active subscribers. That is a huge fail for such a massive IP like Star Trek.
Oh noes, there won't be carebear Klingons?? There goes my dreams of opening a kitten petting zoo on Qo'noS! Golly, way to totally wreck the IP Cryptic!
Way to overreact guys. Check these threads where Devs confirm they haven't spoken about all the Klingon stuff yet, and more info is coming. Perhaps some of you could do with a quote from one of the devs to get your head straight: "If it's STO, the news or something your political parties promise you on your next walk to the voting booth; one thing is common in all three. It WAS a quote from the Devs that said no PvE content for the Klingons. Yeah, I am sure there is plenty they haven't said about the Klingons. They haven't discussed ships much, races, etc. Of course, I don't expect you to believe a direct quote from the Devs if it makes people unhappy with the game. You seem to like to pick and choose what quotes to listen to and when someone says "I don't like what the Devs said here" you blast them and act like the quote has to be creatively interpreted to be apply to as narrow a part of the game as possible. Of course, if they say something you like, then you want the quote to be as broadly interpreted as possible.
Yeah, you'll probably flame me now or something, but what I find so amusing is that on the thread where we rate how true to the IP we expect the game to be, both you and me gave it the SAME rating. Main difference is I'm unhappy with it having so tangential a connection to the IP whereas you think the game would be worse if it was more true. Here it is quite clear that the Klingons have zero PvE content, and you are acting like everyone is "rushing" to judgment when we have a Dev quote on the matter. Might as well no believe you get any bonus material for pre-ordering if you are going to take that attitude. Or heck, the Devs saying there is more to be shown about the Klingons? Might as well not believe that if you don't believe them here.
CO was a shallow and rushed game, and it looks like STO is going to be roughly the same. Yeah, maybe it will be almost decent after they have months and months of people paying THEM for what is essentially beta tester. Given their past games though, I really doubt it will ever venture far beyond being shallow. I agree with what someone else said that it would be better to have no Klingon Faction at all at launch than to have it implemented with only half or less of the proper level of gameplay.

Overeact? The game is less than 2 months from release and we have almost zero info about the Klingons beside the loose statement that "the Klingons will be all about PvP".
Ships? Equipment? Character customization? Anything?
It sounds pretty close to cannon if you ask me, i mean if ya want to bear it and look at rocks all day join the fed. i mean really what do ya want a whole PVE section for Klingons with the same quests just with klingon npc's. and i like the idea of House wars and mabey even fleet actions and bring the EVE online vibe of 0,0 to the game wich for me is not a bad thing. and really when i want to chill and do some quests and mabey a little pvp ill run with the fed side of the game. But when i want good PVP with Fleet commanders yelling out primary targets on TS that just gives me fuzzies.
Personally this makes me want to run two accounts..
This game is going to launch with barely 2 and half years development time.
You can't create a decent MMO in just that short of a time. Period!
Even their champions Online had more development time then STO and look what turd of a game that turned out to be.
The moment I heard Cryptic took over the STO IP and trashed the player crews idea and make everyone captain from the get go.
I already knew this game would turn out to be garbage.
They just rushed it, OVERHype it, scam people with pre-orders, lifetimes, 6-months and what not. Cash in as hard as they can on box sales. And move on to their next project.

I disagree on the, if theres not a PvE experience on par with the federation players, then dont launch it. Any additional gameplay is welcomed. It opens the possibility to see how many people like the klingon playstyle, and how they can implement a more fuller experience for them. (The klingon players).
I should remind a few people who keep using Monsterplay as a bad thing. Some people loved that. Also, incase people havent noticed, Lord of the Rings Online is doing rather bloody well, even though its practically centered around PvE. This game will do 'fine'. By no means will it compete with the big'uns, but you were fooling yourself if you thought it ever could. People's idea for the perfect star trek experience, vary so much that you could never impress or lure enough of them into the game, whilst at the same time, pleasing all parties. It's just to open to interpretation.

ROFL! If Monsterplay was such a success in LOTRO, then why is Turbine not spending a single bit of resource to it for over a year already huh??
Sure people are PvMPing now and then. But it's just a tiny fraction of the entire playerbase.
if PvMP was a success in LOTRO, then we would have seen vast expansion in that area by Turbine. Yet we haven't. We still got the same single zone we had at launch. Except the horsey all rewards are crap and outdated.
So please. Give me a break. You should spend some time on the forum boards and see what the PvMP players have to say about Turbine and their total innaction and neglectance towards the PvMP players.
The real PvMP crowd in LOTRO have abandoned the game long before Mines of Moria expac already.

You've shot wide on that. I said LOTRO was a success, not the monsterplay itself. I was trying to point out a game with a feature like monsterplay, can still be a success in its own right. Some people like the monsterplay as it is, i do play lotro, i know what its like. For me, its abit to casual with not enough depth, but i do know players who spend more time on that than their main characters.
You can't declare that the 'real' monsterplay players have left something when people still play it. Who's to say who has the right to say who's the real players of something. Players are players, a game's a game. I just think that people who say that the game is going to fail for doing something another game has done, and still been successful, (Again not the monsterplay, the overall game) are being narrowminded in their approach.
I challenge someone to create a thread about the good sides to this game, because surely the PvE aspect of the game may infact be good.

With REAL PvMP players I was talking about that in the beginning there were lots of players who couldn't care less about the PVE aspect of the game and only played with PVMP characters and had a blast back then.
As Turbine back then advertised it as a big exiting feature in their game that would get lots of attention and that they would expand it along the way and that people could just solely play PvMP if they wished to.
Now pretty much all of them abandoned the game long ago, the moment they found out at PvMP was an afterthought by Turbine and they had no plans on expanding upon it. And so basically lied from the start.
PvMP is just in maintenance mode and the only thing Turbine does is updating the monsters skills and items/armor sets with each levelcap increase. That's it.
The Trekkies/Trekkers won't care. They will log in play pve spaceship battles, beam to the surface play a solo adventure game with Npcs and fiddle with the monsterplay for kicks. I can see this game much like the NGE version of starwars only being played by the IP fans not mmo gamers.
Possibly. I stuck with that game, but i can't see how any new players would've liked it coming in. I leveled up pre cu, which was great. That legacy stuff was terrible. Nice rewards, but, soul draining.
What exactly is the difference between trekkies and trekkers anyway?

The IP fans are just different. They didn't care for Pre-cu. These people just wanted to visit the sites, play a jedi or a bounty hunter, hang in a cantina.
THe Star trek people are the same, they wanna be captain kirk or whatever, they want to fly the enterprise and they don;t care for newbs blowing them up in competitive pvp destroying their fun.
Those players are going to eat STO up.
Oh Trekkies are the fantaics the people that take ST too far, trekkers are the casual fans, the ones that love ST but don't need to wear a fucking alien mask to work lol.
Well good thing I didnt pre-order the game yet.. I was all for it.. because I was looking forward to playing the Klingon side.. Not so much now. Like others I guess I'll be waiting for news of expansions on playable races before I give up my money.
The worst thing is, not that the game is going to go down in flames, but that it will be blamed on Star Trek. Obviously that IP just isnt profitable! No blame will be put on the fucking terrible planning/engine/gameplay, just watch.

Not even close. Trek fans want to play people other than just the captain. They want to play the engineer, the medical officer, the tactical officer, etc.
They wil raise holy hell when they buy the game and find out they can only be the captain.

If it was Blizzard developing the game then yes. But we are talking about Cryptic here, they are lousy MMORPG devs as demonstrated by their latest debacle Champions Online which is more a singleplayer game than a multiplayer one.

/rolleyes
Anything?

C'mon really people???
What did people expect?
This game is going to launch with barely 2 and half years development time.
You can't create a decent MMO in just that short of a time. Period!
Even their champions Online had more development time then STO and look what turd of a game that turned out to be.
The moment I heard Cryptic took over the STO IP and trashed the player crews idea and make everyone captain from the get go.
I already knew this game would turn out to be garbage.
They just rushed it, OVERHype it, scam people with pre-orders, lifetimes, 6-months and what not. Cash in as hard as they can on box sales. And move on to their next project.
Just like they did with Champions Online.
Cheers

I am looking forward to play Klingon PVP race.

PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
That's it.
