Wow I wish I had your crystal ball (with all the people that keep saying that WOW will be the best game for decades) to know what the population is going to want in 20 years. From what I am reading you are saying that WOW should get the game of the decade because it helps Devs know where to head from here. That is amazing with how much fads change that they can determine that WOW will set the bar for everything to come. I really wish I had that amazing power, if I did I would of invested in Cisco when it first started. Plus Microsoft, and GE. So I am guessing the reason why the people at Gamasultra and these other Dev sites get so much credit from everyone here is because they all are billionaires, and have never ever made a mistake when it comes to business. I really think the rest of the business world should catch on to this and realize that they can become gods of industry by making a website and voting. As a business owner I never realized what I was missing, if I did I would of created my own site and started influencing the way the future will head (and the way people will think in the future) by a simple vote! God I feel stupid if I knew I could control the future with such a simple thing. Poor fortune 500 companies that are failing they had the answer right in front of them, and it was so simple! Thanks to all the geniuses at Gamasultra and all the other dev sites! I bow to your Godly Wisdom and Knowing!

OK I am going to make an analogy of what I am hearing on this website, that I find so amusing. Ok lets go back in time the year is 1989 and we as a industry are going to pick the game of the decade (I am going to use the logic I am seeing on this forum). We decide as game developers that Mario is the game of the decade because it has made more money to date than any other game. Plus it has expanded the market in the 4 years that it was been out; more people are purchasing and playing this game than any other game that was on the Atari. With that Nintendo has set the bar on standards of excellence and shown the gaming world the simplest and best way to make games. They have revolutionized the way games are going to be made for decades to come; people will be playing platform jumpers and will never want anything more. And since there is no possibility that fads change and people change. We can state with absolute certainty that Nintendo is the best gaming company and will be from the foreseeable future. - We the Dev teams of 1989 have spoken and all will be as we say! On a series note you guys might be right that Blizzard might become the powerhouse of gaming in the future. But I will never understand how anyone can say that this is a absolute and have any business sense. After all someone could of made the same claim people are making about WOW and Blizzard, with Mario Brothers and Nintendo back in 1989.
Your attempt at sarcasm fails because I'm not predicting anything nor did I say Blizzard will lead the industry anywhere. All I'm saying is this:
A game from this genre got recognition and I'm glad it did. Now maybe up and coming developers will look to this genre to inject some badly needed variation from the current formula of a MMO.
By the way, Nintendo and that little red plumber you speak of DID resurrect the ENTIRE gaming industry after the crash and burn of Atari. But what I'm hoping for is REAL competition to spawn from Blizzard's success. To introduce someone just like Sega who was always nipping at the heels of Nintendo. And how ONE deal that fell through lead to the creation of a system that surpassed it's predecessors. And how that system woke a sleeping giant that entered the market and snatched enough marketshare that it forced the originators of the industry to rethink it's entire strategy.
Or maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. But that's what I'm hoping for. I'm no fanboi, hater or industry insider. I don't place all my stock in one game or one company. But what I do like is influence. I like when this genre influences the shift away from other genres and direct that focus on my genre, MMOs. When WoW made the splash in our little pond when it fell from the sky, so many of us cried foul, booed and hissed at what was happening. But I'm one to notice how the impact made our pond into a lake-sized crater now. And how the coming rain will once again fill it up.

EDIT: MMO == movies is a more accurate analogy than MMO == food.
A more accurate analogy is movies.
I think the MMO industry will mimic the history of movies closely. At the beginning of the movie industry a lot of really bad movies where made. Why? No writer or director knew how to lure in an audience.
WoW is like Star Wars the movie. It's a huge hit with the public that no one saw coming. Star Wars didn't win the Oscar, but shouldn't it have? It lost because it was popular? Often times the masses are right.
Also like movies, you can hire the best talent, the best direction and you can still make a flop.
The movie/MMO analogy falls short in that people only invest 2 hours or so at a movie while they invest many hours, possibly thousands of hours in an MMO.
Origi Oh the classic fallback to advertising buying great reviews. SOE buys advertising on this site, lets see how many people here think soe is a great company. How many websites talk about the high quality that soe puts out. Take your time finding the awards and praise of soes quality. Oh wait they don't and they don't. Maybe blizzard is paying sites and people to keep soes quality a secret? Especially here, because blizzard is so concerned with mmorpg.com that they don't even advertise here. I think that sufficiently shits all over your little theory wouldn't you say?
You also mentioned in another post that wow is cheap and easy. Why don't people like you ever complete your comparisons without having to resort to talking about hamburgers. Why don't you ever compare apples to apples and talk about mmos? Just answer one, wow is CHEAP compared to what fantasy mmo? I would love to hear you answer that, but I doubt you can. The entire mmo community outside of this burned out angst filled site recognizes the quality blizzard brought to the mmo genre, but we are to believe the bitter homeless mmo wanderes here that wow is cheap? That is the makings for a quality newletter if ever there was one.
The reason people like you never complete your comparison is that you know just how hollow the answer will be. That is why you have to resort to hamburgers and teen pop singers. You don't compare wow to other mmos, because you know how failed your theory already is.
Take away your hamburgers, your gross generalization of 11 million subscribers, lack of reading comprehension, payola conspiracies and all that is left is that you dislike the game.
What do you think makes any classic a classic? If you do not believe that money buys preferenecial treatment then you believe WOW is the best game of the decade, wait a minute, you do believe WOW is the best game of the decade. Spending money for ads on a website or magazine does not buy the readers of such but it sure influences the seller of the ad space, in this case being a magazine or website. The amount of influence can be measured in dollars, just like you folks like to measure WOW's success in dollars. I have told you why WOW is cheap. But in your haste to defend your baby with your propaganda you may have missed it so I will say it again. WOW has cheap graphics, so cheap it will run on any, off the shelf Walmart computer. Gameplay is cheap, so cheap a 5 year old can play the game. Cheap, just like the McDonalds value meal, which also has great sales which is why McDonalds should be restaurant of the decade.

Posting completely off topic is probably more of a troll than your example.
So why did you think WOW deserves the game of the decade?
Oh, posted it earlier, then what are you doing here again?
Perhaps you enjoy trolling, er discussing MMO's like the rest of us?
Just saying.
Back on topic, WOW is as deserving as any other major game of the title game of the decade depending on the criteria of the people who voted for it.
Economics, longevity, successful in both the east and the west, number of subscribers, and even the fact that is so appealing to the casual gamer all make it a worthy contender.

The award was "game of the decade". Not console of the decade. And I hear a lot of folks these days that Wii sports is not exactly doing great in long term playing value. Let alone it would have a subscription base attached to Wii sports. Game of the decade.
Exactly, its GAME of the decade not MMO of the decade. Again, can anyone say, with a straight face that WOW is the best game of the decade? Other than those that have played nothing else that is.
I bet, if you'd google dame of the decade right now, you wouldn't see WoW chosen by too many sites(if any, other than this one).I really don't get it why you people are making so much fuzz all over this.

A commonly accepted GOTD was not chosen yet.
Give it up already. Of course it's the best game of the decade given the criteria. Don't think so? Then name the game that is. As disgusted as I am with blizzard right now for not releasing S2, for being greedy with LAN, etc. and as finished as I am with wow I can admit its greatness given what it was in the beginning, its longevity and the impact it's had on the world. It's easy to say, Oh no it can't be the GOTD. So to the people blabbing that tell me... if one game has to be chosen for that spot then which one? Hmmm? I'm waiting...
I understand the analogy just fine, but it is flawed, incomplete and just plain wrong. Fast food is relatively low quality across the board and even more so when compared to food establishments of a dissimilar nature like a steak restaurant. Thus why it is a bad analogy and the second part is never completed. Most compare wow to McDonalds, but then pretend as if the rest of the mmo genre is something other than fast food in the analogy. It is not a comparison of SIMILAR PRODUCTS. If Wow is mcdonalds and such low quality as you say, then name the 5 star steak dinner restaurant mmo to complete the analogy? If the analogy is so great, complete it. I will give you a fill in the blank to make it easier: In a comparison of quality wow = McDonalds EQ2 = _________ Vanguard = ___________ Warhammer = __________ Age of Conan = ____________ Lets see what quality analogies you have to support the McDonalds thoery. Don't be bashful, feel free to enlighten me about what I don't understand. Step right up and back up your claims. I anxiously await your answers and it should provide for an amusing read.
Just because mcdonalds servers food and is popular doesn't mean it is a good comparison to an mmo. Not to mention the level of ignorance that people using the analogy display, because among FAST FOOD establishments, McDonalds actually rates very high in quality. Example People just assume that because McDonalds is the largest it must be the worst. It is that ignorance that allows places like burger king to serve 2,000 calorie meatnormous death sandwiches, while people cry about McDonalds how bad McDonalds is. People simply pick on McD's, because it is popular and assume that must mean bad, much like the you are doing here. The only reason people choose McDonalds is to associate wow with the negative stigma fast food has. That is it and there is no other reason. If you want to talk about how cheap wow is, do so with an example of wows gameplay and back it up with examples of another mmos gameplay that is vastly superior. Don't talk about a hamburger, talk about mmos.
Yet when you look at the mmo industry, you will see game reviewers, websites, critics and players across the board praise wow for its superior quality to other mmos. This site seem to live in denial of the rest of the market for some reason. That is why they hide behind hamburgers and not talk directly about the game.
My pleasure.
wow = McDonalds
EQ2 = Burger King
Vanguard = Dominos
Warhammer = Wendy's
Age of Conan = Jack in the Box
** Double edit: Mine wasn't a comparison of quality, but market shares. And just because McDonalds might not have as high of calorie content as some things, how many people are going to say it tastes better than food from a fine restaurant, or that it's healthier than LOCAL fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat. Come on.
You say the comparison isn't in quality which would make it a fair analogy. Then you do bring quality into this, inferring that WoW is not a quality game. This analogy does not work. People eat McDonalds for various reasons, its quick, decent food and a good bang for the buck. If you want a real meal you can go out a restaraunt and probably in mot cases spend a little more money to do so. However in the case of WoW, people play it because they like it. None of the above reasons related to McDonalds applies to people playing WoW. Is it cheaper than other MMORPG's? Nope ... think it may even be more expensive than several when you start getting into expansions and what not. People can pick pretty much any game or mmo they want to for the same price if not less ... but they choose wow.
Personally I won't ever say it is the best game but the stupid McDonald analogy referencing quality compared to McDonalds is absurd.

Deus Ex, HL2, GTA series(I'd go with San Andreas).
Either way, feel free to bump this thread when WoW will be considered GOTD by a large number of reviewers.

You still harping on this cheap bit huh? Yes influence is great and all but it can only get you so far. The influence of STO landing it a MMO but will that translate into cash? Who knows. The influence of great IPs like: Conan, Matirx, Lord of The Rings, Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer got them all MMOs, but which of those had strong enough influence to move beyond the barrier of the stagnant genre it populates?
Comparing WoW's graphics to cheap is like comparing a hybrid car to a fuel dependent car and calling it's owners cheapskates for getting a hybrid. It maybe cheap to run, but it's sure as hell not cheap to make, buy or maintain.
Comparing WoW's gameplay to something cheap is like using a PC to only respond to forum topics. Yeah you can use it for that, but really the limits of it are only as high as the user's desires.

It's common sense to say that WoW will easily win MMO of the decade, but not game of the decade.

Well let me just say most of what I wrote was not directed at you, but at this whole forum discussion! I respect what you say here, no one wants to lose hope in something they like doing.
With that said it might just be the way you word it, but it still sounds to me like you are predicting the future. You are putting Blizzard in the same breath as Nintendo when you said that they resurrect the industry. So I can only assume that you must know the future and can see how WOW will help shape it. If that is your opinion why they deserve to be game of the decade over ever other game. If it is not then I stand with my previous statement that I have a lot of respect of the hope you see for the industry.

Why do I need to hide a discussion behind an analogy when I can just talk about the mmos themselves? The only reason to use an analogy here is if someone wants to associate negative stigmas of another product onto wow or they want to ignore the relative facts about the actual subject and talk about another entire industry with the pretense that it is an identical match. Gee, both companies make a lot of money so they must have identical aspects right? See how stupid that sounds?
I can talk directly about the quality of wow in comparison to other mmos. I don't need to talk about a hamburger and pretend that somehow proves wow is shit. Analogies are easy to misconstrue, misrepresent and completely ignore vital facts about the true subject of the discussion and futhermore bring in unrelated aspects that have no direct comparison to the true subject. The mentality that just because McDonalds is popular then it must make a great comparison to wow is just plain ignorant on many levels. Google is popular, so why don't people like yourself ever compare that to wow? Heaven forbid you use the same stupid logic that anything popular must make for a great analogy to wow, especially one with a positive and socially acceptable image. Oh no, that would not suit your agenda.
The first of which is that McDonalds is tops in quality in comparison to SIMILAR competitors (you know, what an analogy is supposed to be a comparison of). I don't really need to go any further than that to show how ignorant and incorrect the McD's analogy is. People incorrectly pick one of the highest quality fast food franchises and try to spin that as a negative.
If you want to get around to talking in specifics about what makes wow cheap and support your claims by comparing it to another mmo, then lets talk, but I doubt you will for obvious reasons. The same reasons wow has won critical acclaim for high standards and quality from every corner of the gaming industry, but the so called mmo experts here think they know something the overwhelming majority of the gaming industry doesn't.
If you want to be a coward and hide behind some analogy of fast food in a vain attempt to rub the negative stigma of fast food onto a single mmo then don't expect to be taken seriously. Everyone knows that fast food in general isn't a very healthy diet, but that doesn't relate to a video game in the slightest.
The end result is PvE in current WoW is really dumbed down and easy, that is why the game is popular. They made PvE content quite trivial, that is why the McDonalds analogy is correct.
PvP- again no thought required. Just queue up for an instance and repeat enough times. Fight the same opponents every time

Do you have any arguments or do you just post useless and meaningless responses all of the time?

And btw, I was clearing twin emps when people like you were in Molten Core wiping on Lucifron begging for welfare epics and easy-mode content
And I was gaming long before you were born, your point is?
I really feel sorry for you if you consider that a personal attack and you had to edit your answer just to say that.
The fact is: You do have no idea about what you're talking if you consider arena to require no tought and PvE content is too easy.

Like easy-mode games matter or are fun.
If you really think the PvE content is not easy, then tell me why every guild on a given server is doing the same thing, and has the same items?
They let shit guilds do the same stuff as good guilds, and trolls like this Op think it is something amazing when they have so many subscriptions. If I owned an MMORPG and gave out so many welfare epics and freebies, I wonder how popular that MMORPG would become?
As I've said many times, lots of people who think WoW content is hard just have never played original WoW. They come in and play easy-mode where all of the instances are easy and the hard-modes are easy.
Yeah hard-modes are harder than normal mode. But all of the instances were hard-mode in original WoW.
In current WoW:
Normal mode is more like easy mode, and hard mode is like normal mode.
I hope you realise that there are games out there that drastically outweight the difficulty of any MMORPG.
The hardest achievements in the world had been completed by less than 5 guilds in the entire world: that's less than 125 people from 11 milions.
Most 5man in WoW were far easier than certain BC heroics and raids started to get hard after BWL. SH heroic prenerfs destroyed any vanilla 5man in term of difficulty.
WoW changed from the gear e-peen to being fun and rewarding for everyone, but still having hardmodes to please the hardcore community which doesn't really care about gear(see Ensidia, Stars, etc), just the difficulty.
Yes, overall the game got easier over years, but it got easier from a grind/preparation point of view(which many confuses with being hard). However, the actual hardmode boss fights are harder than ever.
As I've said many times, lots of people who think WoW content is hard just have never played original WoW. They come in and play easy-mode where all of the instances are easy and the hard-modes are easy.
And others such as me, who did play original WoW (progressive raiding guild, server firsts in BWL, AQ and Naxx60) and who is currently still playing WoW, thinks that you're talking oot yer hindquarters.

Now that you mention it , i do prefer my Grand Marquis over any of the hybrids ive seen. And have no doubt, it is a higher quality vehicle. The difference is, I do not feel the need to convince the world that it is so. With the sub numbers of WOW, whatever they truly are, I fail to understand the rabid intensity with which the fanboys defend this game from those that see it as just another game and nothing special. And certainly not deserving of the title Game of the Decade.

There were much better games that did things for the business. WOW might have been MMO of the decade due to sheer numbers but game...not so much. Oblivion for instance is a better game or even GTA 4. Even from a MMO standpoint EQ might have been better to be chosen since most consider it the mother of most of todays MMOs including WOW. Seems it was given based on numbers more than deserving it.
I agree 100%, I do not think WOW is undeserving of praise or award. However to me it's kind of a discredit to games such as EQ which laid the foundation for WOW to have such success. It would be like crediting Sam Raimi for creating the zombie movie genre. His films may be more accessible and sell more copies, however Romero still was his influence.

MMO == McDonalds is a troll, pure and simple.

My pleasure.
wow = McDonalds
EQ2 = Burger King
Vanguard = Dominos
Warhammer = Wendy's
Give it up already. Of course it's the best game of the decade given the criteria. Don't think so? Then name the game that is. Deus Ex, HL2, GTA series(I'd go with San Andreas).
Either way, feel free to bump this thread when WoW will be considered GOTD by a large number of reviewers.
I assure you, it won't happen.

You clearly have no idea about how important HL2 and Source engine was for PC gaming.

It's common sense to say that WoW will easily win MMO of the decade, but not game of the decade.

Well I suppose if we get into more technical aspects important to developers and such. I thought we were talking about player experience and the impact it had on player communities
WoW should win mmo of the decade but not game of the decade.
I think the orignial Halo and HL2 should have been tied for GOTD.
Halo started the new generation of amazing FPS, and HL2 elevated it above and beyond what people imagined games could be.
Frankly, Boulders Gate and to a lesser extent Diablo2, both released in 2000, should be the top RPG titles.
But this is all opinion...
