WOW is the Beatles or the Elvis of MMOs. Everyone loves them, everyone tried to copy them and they sold a billion records. Thats a much better analogy;)
you are entitled to your opinion but Me personally i would not think they are anything like the beatles. Beatles was a VERY VERY good band. Their sound was quite unique for its time and the quality they produced was unsurmountable.
WOW i can go into detail what i didnt like it despite the fact the masses played it. again this is my opinion.
CRAFTING: was very poor in WOW. I thought it was horrible and useless.
ECONOMY: same very poor. Basically everything you find from drops were sold. Nothing a player can do to actually make money from crafting. the best gear in game was not craftable. It sits in a dungeon. This to ME, is killer. Why i would not put WOW up on such a high pedestal. I never liked this model of play. Id prefer the player be allowed to create the items needed for other players.
Linear gameplay: I didnt like the fact that once you leave the area you are pretty much done with it. Basically you moved thru the land to level up... tiered so you can continue on with your character development. I would prefer a more open world with choices of where to go level and do stuff rather then this spot is for 1-5 and the next spot is for 5-9 etc etc... of course this is only my personal opinion and how i feel.
quests... not thought out.. very boring.. go here kill 10 things go here kill 20 things... hey get my necklace the fat pig has it. go kill him.... do this for x amount of levels. Yuck.
classes.. very limited.. not many....
races.. . not many... very limited
castle sieging... do they even have castles or keeps to siege? not really.. all pvp that has purpose is isntanced.. otherwise it is a mass of poeple sitting in one spot or a city waiting for another mass to come by and see who is last man standing.
Housing... non existant.
graphics... umm cartoony pastel graphics not comparable to even an older game like dark age of camelot. the graphics are better in that game and its an extremely older game then WOW.
player city... no opportunity in this game
seamless World... nope non existant
character customization... i will give it some credit here however they still need to fix there trees so that there isnt only one or two viable ways lessing the customization.
i can go on but whats the point... it will be argued down like crazy that i dont know the game considering yes i did play it. WOW is not my cup of tea. Do i hate it.. NO. I dont. But the WOW fanboys say i do because i say something negative about it.
What do you not understand about that an analogy must compare items of similar nature. If your analogy is about McDonalds then you can only compare it to other fast food restaurants. Among FAST FOOD restaurants, yes McDonalds is healthier and higher quality than most of its direct competitors. Don't try to draw unrelated comparisons to what I have said, because I was very clear in my words. Sorry if you don't understand that. You simply want to associate McDonalds fast food with wow and ignore everything else, because all you want to do is associate a negative aspect. That is not how an analogy works. Not that I think talking about a hamburger is relative to an video game, but if that is what you think makes a valid discussion knock yourself out. I can only point out the flaws in your discussion, I can't make you comprehend.
You are not aware of what an analogy is. Just look it up man. Oh screw it here. From thefreedictionary.com
a·nal·o·gy (-nl-j)
n. pl. a·nal·o·gies
1.
a. Similarity in some respects between things that are otherwise dissimilar.
b. A comparison based on such similarity. See Synonyms at likeness.
2. Biology Correspondence in function or position between organs of dissimilar evolutionary origin or structure.
3. A form of logical inference or an instance of it, based on the assumption that if two things are known to be alike in some respects, then they must be alike in other respects.
4. Linguistics The process by which words or morphemes are re-formed or created on the model of existing grammatical patterns in a language, often leading to greater regularity in paradigms, as evidenced by helped replacing holp and holpen as the past tense and past participle of help on the model of verbs such as yelp, yelped, yelped.

Hey Cecropia, hey dont worry... Im sure he will argue with the dictionary too.. He just doesnt understand the concept of Analogy.
he is strictly talking about "COMPARISON" not "ANALOGY" and he is confusing the two.
but arguing with him is like arguing with a brick wall. but wait i cant compare him to a brick wall can I? LOL
Really I know what an analogy is. I am not saying this isn't an analogy ok? I am saying it is a bad analogy.
You compare Wow to McDonalds for no other reason than they are popular. You take 1 thing and then make all sorts of half assed assumptions based off a hamburger as if you are making a valid point about a video game and you can't even get that right.
You ignore that McDonalds is clearly superior to its direct competitors. If you are comparing mmos to fast food, then you have already failed, because McDonalds is one of the highest quality fast food restaurants on the market. NOTE: since you have trouble understanding that comment, I am not saying fast food is high quality, but among its peers, McDonalds is higher quality than the rest. You have already picked an analogy that disproves your theory, but that doesn't stop you does it?
The only way you can make the McDonalds analogy work is to then compare McDonalds to some other nonsimilar food industry like fine dining or organic foods. So now you are comparing wow to mcdonalds and McDonalds to fine dining as if fine dining somehow represents the rest of the mmo industry. Where do you get off making that leap of faith? You are no longer making a similar comparion of anything, but rather substituting the situation of dissimilar products in an entirely different industry as if that somehow directly translates into what video games have done. It is absolutely absurd and non relevant.
You then ignore that Wow has won massive acclaim for being a quality product from every aspect of the gaming industry and is the reason most . Especially when compared to its direct competition. You know, mmos. The actual things we should be discussing instead of hamburgers vs fine dining.
You try to draw the unspoken conclusion that the rest of the mmo genre is comparable to organic healthy fine dining. Have fun trying to show that similarity in comparison to support your mcdonalds analogy.
Great Mcdonals is popular and so is wow. That somehow proves wow is crap? Google is popular too, but hey who wants to make wow look good around here when we can talk about fast food instead.
I know what an analogy is and I am not saying that you are not making an analogy. I'm saying your analogy sucks and it actually disproves your theory that wow is low quality. You won't understand that, because you have tunnel vision to prove wow is crap by talking about a hamburger. Which ironically enough directly contradicts the point you are trying to make, but you are to ignorant to see that.
As I said earlier, I don't need to hide behind an analogy to discuss the quality of mmos. I can simply compare mmos for their specific aspects. I don't see the need to blur the issue by talking about a hamburger.

McDonalds is more widely available to people than Arbys. Hey I got 5 kids to feed! There gotsta be a McDizzles somewheres nearby!
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
World Of Warcraft for Game Of the Decade? Maybe MMO Of The Decade which it should go to Second Life instead, but I can think of about 40 regular games of the top of my head for nominations for Game Of The Decade and not one of them is WoW, their community keeps putting their foot in their mouth every time they open it.
It's a pure sin to have this win game of the decade. I wouldn't even give it MMO of the decade. That's like giving Halo 3 FPS of the decade. WoW did NOTHING original, not a single unique idea. Where's the award for EverQuest, or Dark Age of Camelot, the two games WoW took ALL of its ideas from, and then watered them down for kiddies?
I think WoW also has the community of the decade. What do you think?
i think this ones about done... so.. WoW is the game of the decade.. not exactly unsurprising. nor undeserved.. doesnt mean other games are no good.. but.. WoW did mainstream MMO's after all, something of an achievement all of itself.

Right on!

Second Life isn't a game, it's a virtual social environment, like Facebook with avatars.
As far as the main topic, who is to say what makes one game better than another? I played WoW for a time...liked some of it, hated some of it. Would I give it Game of the Decade? No idea. I always have problems naming all encompassing "bests". How do you compare an MMO to a solo RPG to a FPS to a <insert any of 100 genres here>? For one it appears like Gamasutra had an open call for this...they didn't arbitrarily name their 50 favorites and have people vote. They had everyone who wanted to pitch in their opinion, do so. So obviously more people chose WoW than anything else and that's why it won. The only flaws might be (like in a Presidential election) that not everyone that plays games voted AND lots of people probably voted with their hearts and not their minds. But again, what's the best...the most favorite, the most well put together, the most influential. I think Gamasutra was going for an all inclusive best, and here again we have the problem that not everyone is going to consider this in their voting.
TBH, I don't think I have a personal best game of the decade. There isn't one that stands out above the rest to me. There are a few games from each major genre that I liked, but nothing notable. In fact, I think it is easier for me to state my fave game of all time (again not necessarily the best because voting with the heart is easier). That would be Wasteland, from back in the day.
WOW is the Beatles or the Elvis of MMOs. Everyone loves them, everyone tried to copy them and they sold a billion records. Thats a much better analogy;)
I think that's a pretty good analogy. I think both the Beatles and Elvis are incredibly over-rated and unworthy of their popularity too.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Are there people that actually believe this?
The Beatles were INNOVATIVE. They were NEW.
Many people HATE WoW, the vast majority of real MMORPG players hate it (the people that played MMOs before WoW came out). It's not original, it's not innovative, it's never done anything special.
It didn't mainstream MMOs, that was EverQuest. EverQuest INVENTED the 3D MMO. Jesus Christ I understand being a fanboy, but really?

I think raising the bar from a couple of hundred thousand to several million, counts as mainstream.. rather than the days of Everquest or Evercrack as it was called, which i also played btw, which had a more 'nerdish' image. and correct me if im wrong, but didnt Meridian 59 predate Everquest too.. or UO even.. or if you go back even further, Legends of Kesmai.. and yeah.. i played that too.. as for the "vast ,majority of real MMORPG players" oh please.. isnt that just your personal opinion.. if you hate it then everyone of any real consequence must too.. well it might not be my favourite game, though i have played it on occasion.. usually when i need a break from.. oh yeah.. my favourite game is actually Eve.. so .. shouldnt i be a WoW hater too? everyone has their own preferences in types of games, it would be a boring world if we all liked the exact same things.. whichever way you look at it.. before WoW there were games that had a few thousand players.. a couple of hundred thousand if they were really successful.. and then WoW appears and all of a sudden millions are playing.. if that isnt something new.. or something special.. then what is ?

I would say Ultima Online mainstreamed MMOs....but whatever.
WoW did do one thing. It made the industry what it is today. Without it, EQ would just be a niche in the background of computer gaming, and the 100s of newer MMOs would not even have been dreamt of.
Since we are into analogies around here, it's like Harry Potter. I generally like the stories, but are they amazing...no. But wIthout his box office success, we wouldn't have all these other tweens books/series getting made into movies. The books would be there and would be enjoyed by a select few, but it takes something special (again, not necessarily great) to start or boost an industry. WoW did that.
The other top 12 on the list were all good games, but they did not do for their genres what WoW did, hence they were not number 1.
As far as the Beatles, most people that post on these boards were not around in their day, so don't understand the impact. I personally like a handful of their songs and can ditch the rest, but I see their influence.

It still isn't mainstream, and is still viewed as geeky.
But the point that you missed is, WoW did nothing new. They took existing widely successful features, and just made it all really really easy with no room for failure. The game itself is so limited in what it can do, games from 2002 had more features than WoW currently does. Again, it's like naming Halo 3 the best FPS, ignoring the others that came before it.

The Beatles ripped off black America, putting a white face on black music.
The Beatles took black music and made it main stream. Nothing innovative about them. They were much like the group Boys to Men, imo.
You could say WoW took a genre mainly played by early adopters, eg nerds, and made the genre mainstream.

Really I know what an analogy is. I am not saying this isn't an analogy ok? I am saying it is a bad analogy. and right here shows you still dont understand... LOL
You compare Wow to McDonalds for no other reason than they are popular. No I didnt... but i will explain down below You take 1 thing and then make all sorts of half assed assumptions based off a hamburger as if you are making a valid point about a video game and you can't even get that right. LOL is all i gotta say.. this is the part you about you not understanding the analogy and what it is.
You ignore that McDonalds is clearly superior to its direct competitors. who said anything about direct competitors? seriously who said that.. if you are referring to the 4 star restaurant hamburger that i was referring to then yeah i was comparing to an absolutely superb no fatty burger with 100% pure ground chuck. Yeah i am going to compare Mcdonalds crappy fatty meat that will give you a high blood pressure and cholestorol after eating it for one month straight. If you are comparing mmos to fast food, then you have already failed, says who? says you because you still dont get analogy. because McDonalds is one of the highest quality fast food restaurants on the market. nobody gives a crap if its best of the worst food out... almost all fast food restaurants are generally NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Unless it is a specific fast food restaurant that goes out of its way to server ALL HEALTHY FOOD. So generally speaking, fast food is bad for you.. this is the analogy that was said... sorry YOU cant understand taht. you are the one trying to compare McDonalds with Wendy's etc... why in the hell would i do that. THEY ARE BOTH BAD. NOTE: since you have trouble understanding that comment, I am not saying fast food is high quality, but among its peers, McDonalds is higher quality than the rest. You have already picked an analogy that disproves your theory, but that doesn't stop you does it? LOL again you simply cant understand the analogy... There is a hotel in Joliet IL... its a 4 star hotel... it has a hamburger for its lunch menu. And it is one of the best hamburgers you will ever taste. I had the opportunity to try it for free when i was with some clientele a while back. And I will tell you what... McDonalds is a disgrace in comparison. But hey McDonalds sells by the billions world wide. So just by shear numbers its better right? So since WOW is so much like McDonaolds in that mind set... just because it has millions playing its game does not make it good. LOL that is an analogy man.. get it thru that thick skull of yours.. face it you are wrong here big guy. and you will continue to play a dance around.
It is absolutely absurd and non relevant. you need to learn to read... i did state another restaurant... not a fast food one...
You then ignore that Wow has won massive acclaim for being a quality product from every aspect of the gaming industry and is the reason most . And so has LOTRO... in fact i think it actually won more awards then WOW did. It did win the expansion of the year too with their newest Mirkwood... does that make it the king of the MMOs? Especially when compared to its direct competition. You know, mmos. The actual things we should be discussing instead of hamburgers vs fine dining. and the reason it was brought up because MONEY or Subs has NO direct correlation of how good a game is.. which is why an analogy was used to get the clueless to understand... so do you understand yet?
You try to draw the unspoken conclusion that the rest of the mmo genre is comparable to organic healthy fine dining. Have fun trying to show that similarity in comparison to support your mcdonalds analogy. like i said you dont understand.. its ok.. seriously i dont expect you to.
Great Mcdonals is popular and so is wow. That somehow proves wow is crap? Google is popular too, but hey who wants to make wow look good around here when we can talk about fast food instead. again... you dont understand.

LOL You won't understand that oh i understand.. the fault lies with you., because you have tunnel vision this would be you... not me... you seem to be blinded by your own ego. to prove wow is crap by talking about a hamburger. Which ironically enough directly contradicts the point you are trying to make, but you are to ignorant to see that. I left the definition of analogy up above so you can read it again... this statement just fully explains you still dont understand what analogy is. And because I dont side with you because you argue with a definition makes me ignorant... LOL
As I said earlier, I don't need to hide behind an analogy to discuss the quality of mmos. I can simply compare mmos for their specific aspects. I don't see the need to blur the issue by talking about a hamburger. read my last post or two.. i gave a full list of things WHY WOW IS NOT GOOD quality... so dont tell me I didnt... And i wasnt the one who made up the McDonalds analogy.. but you truly are funny... i was simply saying its an analogy.. you say it was bad and poor because you need to keep analogies with the industry is your reasoning... which is false... you dont need to for analogies.. thats why they are called analogies... read the definition above and learn something.
I didn't know both these games had the 2 most orginal ideas of any mmorpg...: 24/7 GROUP gameplay ....
Cross server Battlegrounds (PvP)THAT ARE EMPTY FOR LOWER LEVELS and cross server Dungeons (Pve) against an open seamless world Open Seamless WORLD? you do realize that WOW is NOT SEAMLESS.. its all zoned. of questing crappy quests of go here kill 10 things.. go here kill 20 things.. etc etc...no thought behind any of their quests. and crafting SUCKs, it is totally worthless as gear dropped in dungeons are far worth more then the crappy stuff crafted. and open world PvP like City Raids what are you raiding... do you get to take the city over? NO.. you go and kill each other aimlessly.. and pointlessly... nothing to achieve but a big EPEEN contest and REAL animated landscape this is no different then any other MMO i have played. Try Final Fantasy XI their animated world is way better. changes and mounted Siege mechanics.
I didn't see FLYING either and background loading like in Outland/Northrend. LOL you do realize that games have had flying in it before WOW?
And of course the world changing phasing mechanic (without loading screens) was also new. ?no clue what you are talking about here?
Mhhh ... Did these two have DUAL specs (Could you play tank, healer, dps with just ONE character on the fly?).really? so all the WOW classes can do this? WOW was not the first to do this by the way.
Did they have SCALED Raiding difficulty. Did they have Arena and a ladder based PvP system with OUT of the game competition as an E-sport EVERYTHING YOU STATED here has been done before in other MMOs before WOW even introduced them.
And last but not least did they also have more than 11.600.000 players and a turnover of 1.200.000.000 $ US on a yearly basis. you are saying there are 11 million US players? better redo your statement there. and they did NOT make 1.2 billion EVERY year they have been out.. those figures are only for the past year.. not every year preceding it.
Nothing original ? umm yeah nothing new big guy.. hate to tell you this.. this game has nothing special that any other MMO has had. the reason for its popularity is because of whats been stated over and over in this thread that you keep failing to read.
Since analogies are being thrown left, right and center. How about the comparison of mmo's to books? Harry Potter. Is JK Rowling's work the best out there? Because she is the highest paid writer worldwide in 2008.
With the movies making her tons of money and the immense popularity of Harry and friends worldwide, it MUST be the best fantasy story out there right? Right?
How can it not?! I can literally link hundreds if not thousands of sites where they praise it and show the awards given to the books and its acclaimed writer.
I can show the appeal and 'originality' it brought to the genre, out selling Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, etc All fantasy writers who also share acclaims of great stories and imaginative worlds, but their worlds cannot compare to Harry and his world becasue they just haven't reached that much fanfare and renown.
Ppl can repeat themselves Ad Nauseum about 24/7 cross server, dual talented, open world (to his definition of it), blah blah blah you get the point...and still have no clue as why others will not agree as it being the BEST.
If this cannot give you an inkling as to why, then you're hopelessly brain-washed into thinking nothing is better than what you know and love. And THAT's extremely ignorant and narrow-minded of you.
Since analogies are being thrown left, right and center. How about the comparison of mmo's to books? Harry Potter. Is JK Rowling's work the best out there? Because she is the highest paid writer worldwide in 2008.
a better analogy is Lord of the Rings by Tolkein. There were all kinds of fantasy stories around, Wizard of Oz which tolkein borrowed heavily from, Conan, a lot of stuff in Weird Tales.
But Tolkein brought the genre mainstream and millions have read his books. Tolkeins biggest contribution, imo, is opening up the genre to adults.
That`s exactly my point. Thank you. I bring up someone who made a fortune while Tolkien had to deal with little to no money for it (at the time) and very little acclaim (his peers thought him silly), and you introduce him as a better analogy.
Made my point better than I could. Now, is Tolkien`s work the best out there?

The best is always going to be relative to the user. Out of these games, DDO, LOTRO, WAR, AoC... WoW is the best, in my opinion. I base this on the lack of lag, involved combat, interesting lore and quests, and so on. It's a quality product.
Well said. I respect your opinion because it is yours and not a rehearsed blanketed statement against any who don`t think the same.
I`ve enjoyed WoW immensely until not long ago, and though I can say it is very good and solid. I cannot say it is the best. It does what does very well, but its graphics are outdated, except for player animations(which are fluid and`have feeling of being alive). The formula used for endgame and gear progression also, imo, is making the genre isolationist-based, even in endgame grouping. Pugs.
It just saddens me that some cannot accept the fact that WoW, as good as it is, isn`t everyone`s cup of tea, and never shall be. And being `The Best`is totally and unequivocally based on personal opinion.
Comments
you are entitled to your opinion but Me personally i would not think they are anything like the beatles.

I think WoW also has the community of the decade. What do you think?
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
It's a pure sin to have this win game of the decade. I wouldn't even give it MMO of the decade. That's like giving Halo 3 FPS of the decade. WoW did NOTHING original, not a single unique idea. Where's the award for EverQuest, or Dark Age of Camelot, the two games WoW took ALL of its ideas from, and then watered them down for kiddies?
i think this ones about done... so.. WoW is the game of the decade.. not exactly unsurprising. nor undeserved.. doesnt mean other games are no good.. but.. WoW did mainstream MMO's after all, something of an achievement all of itself.
You run around in circles, and yet you still do not understand what an analogy is (even after I provided you with the definition).
Right on!
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
I think that's a pretty good analogy. I think both the Beatles and Elvis are incredibly over-rated and unworthy of their popularity too.

I think that's a pretty good analogy. I think both the Beatles and Elvis are incredibly over-rated and unworthy of their popularity too.

I think that's a pretty good analogy. I think both the Beatles and Elvis are incredibly over-rated and unworthy of their popularity too.

It is absolutely absurd and non relevant. you need to learn to read... i did state another restaurant... not a fast food one...

I'm saying your analogy sucks and it actually disproves your theory that wow is low quality. which is why you are having trouble understanding isnt it?
Because she is the highest paid writer worldwide in 2008.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7649962.stm
And THAT's extremely ignorant and narrow-minded of you.
a better analogy is Lord of the Rings by Tolkein.

It just saddens me that some cannot accept the fact that WoW, as good as it is, isn`t everyone`s cup of tea, and never shall be. And being `The Best`is totally and unequivocally based on personal opinion.
