Well first off I want to say I am not bashing you or anyone else with my posts, I just do not understand why you guys view things they way you do. First off let me just say before I would buy anyone's opinion that WOW is the greatest influence in gaming for all game developers. I would have to see some facts, if anyone can provide them then I will agree that across all gaming WOW has had the most influence.
Have you been living in a cave for the last 5 years? Why should we have to prove something that anyone that is not completely ignorant and blind could figure out for themselves in 5 miniutes? It seems to me you are just arguing for the sake of arguing. Not sure what your beef is with WoW, but it's clouding your judgement in my opinion.
Ah nice so you attack me and say I live in a cave because I just do not assume I know everything. Nice!!! Without evidence that MMOs and RPGs in general make most of the money for the Gaming industry, then that is all you are doing assuming. Yes we know that WOW makes a lot of money I am not denying that, I am just saying how much of a % is it compared to what the whole gaming industry makes in a given year. You could be right MMOs and RPGs could make up a vast majority of that industries profit. But I unlike some people just do not assume it is the largest without seeing the numbers. So you can say all you want about me living in a cave, because I just do not accept the fact that something is reality without evidence. I will live in my cave and some people out there can live in their fantasy world, where ever thing they assume is reality.
You are aware that PC Gamer does this list every year (because new great games appear every year) and it's based on fan votes? And even games that have been around prior to the most recent year get jumbled around each time. For example, WoW was 1 a couple of years ago. These lists by respected sites don't mean too much. All we can most likely agree on as a group is that most of the games in the top 50 at least deserve the top 50...the exact order is upto each of us to determine.
Exactly. Its up to individuals to decide the order. Not a magazine, website or fanboy. But the crusade will continue because the wow fanboys cannot just enjoy their game, they need to convince all those who do not share their love for the game as well reinforce to themselves that the game is worth their time.
Likewise, the anti-fanboys cannot tell the WoW players enough times that the game is too easy, stole ideas from other "better" MMOs, etc.
Hey, maybe we should make an MMO set in the real world where WoW fanboys fight anti-fanboys. I bet we could make millions on the novelty alone before everyone realizes how dumb it is.
What escapes you is WHY companies were trying to emulate wow. Why people chose wow over other mmos. Why wow had such an effect on the entire genre. oh it hasnt escaped me... you just want it to. why? i will answer.. it has had a negative effect actually.. i wouldnt call this a positive one... 2000-2001 a MMO came out with such uniqueness... a more PVP oriented game.. called Dark Age of Camelot. they made a thing called RVR. with castle sieging and keep takes. Never been done before in any MMO. New ideas emerged. SWG brought up a neat idea of making a ton os professions... not classes and you pick the skills you want... unique... Shadowbane... with all its classes and a PURE PVP world with a stitch of PVE only to level your character up... had a unique customization with runes. Horizons came up with a very unique system of PVE by having Skeletons and undead attack cities in teh world and literally burning them down to dust.. very neat and different concept for an MMO. catching on to where i am going. MMOs were trying to come up with its own.. trying to be unique in its own way.. and yes still EQ and UO and AC still paved the way to have what they discovered still used in ALL THOSE MMOs. that cant be denied.
they were the first of teh 3D MMOs.
You and others want us to believe that is it due to wow being low quality and bad. No fun, horrible community, terrible everything and whatever other gross over generalization you can think of. To support your claims you talk about hamburgers and stores selling hammers in China. Stunning evidence you have there. actually it was WOWs success that made companies start looking at them to copy what they did instead of coming up with something NEW. so many Quick rich MMOs trying to get a piece of the pie of all the new players that WOW brought into the MMO community.
All it takes to see how paper thin the logic of these forums is to look elsewhere. or how paper thin your arguments are because you are the ONLY PERSON WHO IS RIGHT OUT OF EVERYBODY ELSE. Everywhere else, from critics, competitors, game designers and players alike talk about the high degree of quality that wow delivered. It exposed the shoddy condition that many mmos were in and how soft the entire genre was. what quality is that? please explain? i hear this time and time again.. but never say what is? does WOW have housing? Does WOW crafting so important that all the top players are wearing what they craft? these are just a couple examples...
Now is that the fault of one company doing a job well done or the fault of many other companies failing to make something that that can measure up in direct competition? lol at launch WOW was not perfect.. it had huge problems.. it was buggy as hell... please tell me how it was so perfect.. it never even had PVP at launch. problem is so many try comparing a 5 year old game to a new one... If you ask the angst generation here, it is the fault of those who succeed. or is the fault of those that love the company that succeeded to always stuff the same information about how wow Has 11 million subs on why some begin to hate the game because of it. Ask anywhere else and they rightly place blame on those who fail. never said anything different.. i blame the companies for following the WOW model instead of being different. you really need to learn to read.
Wow is nothing more than an everquest clone and the everquest model is the basis of almost every fantasy mmo on the market. The inconsistancies of logic around here is so funny. never said it wasnt... and your point is? all use the concepts that AC, UO, and EQ did. But to add something different in on top of that is where you shine as an innovative MMO. Please name something that WOW has that no other MMO hasnt had? On one hand people cry about how wow didn't bring one new thing to the genre, nothing. it didnt... please tell us what it did bring that was new to the table but maybe the whole THEME PARK concept for MMOs On the other hand, you cry about how everyone is trying to clone wow as if it is something totally new to the genre. yep.. because of its subscriptions.. $$$$$$$$$$ is the issue here... not how the game is. Companies only see $$$$$$$$$$$. so they look at WOW. And say, yeah we can do it. Gee take a look at Runes of Magic... ALLODS... never seen such WOW rip offs. other games as well.
So which is it? Wow is exactly like everything else or wow is so different that every company is rushing to clone it? LOL again failing to catch the concept arent you? LOL you are too funny... WOW hasnt brought up anything new... it has taken what most MMOs have already done... that isnt what made it successful obviously. Maybe its the IP.. warcraft. maybe its because 5 million subs are from China... 6 million comes from the rest of teh world. in anycase... a company will look at that... and like i said above will see $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ . they want... they lust for it... so what better way.. lets bring a new game out just like WOW. it might work for one maybe two companies doing it... BUT the market is so flooded now with them. Failed logic is easy to expose. or you mean FAILED UNDERSTANDING?
Originally posted by willvas Then there are people who villify those who have a differing opinion than theirs and label them zealots, fanbois, trolls or whatever. so basically take your own advice.. you have been doing it consistently to everybody... funny you use the word vilify which is one L by the way. But it is those same strong willed that will come to defend the game.. not the other way around... we give our opinions as to why we dont like the game.. the "fanboys" "zealots" come rushing to defend because OMG we cant have people bashing the best game every, can we? I mean seriously. EVERYBODY MUST LOVE WOW. IF YOU DONT, THEN YOU ARE NOT RIGHT IN THE HEAD. true?
Like you do with my while crying about my love of wow. Honestly I'm bored with wow and spend the vast majority of my time playing other mmos. bored why? maybe because the theme park is not exciting anymore... you have been desensitized? I'm not going to turn into a disgruntled quitter and start crying about how wow sucks, just because I'm bored with it. oh and i never quit WOW in disgrunt.. i just left because the game fell short on a LOT OF THINGS:
WOWi can go into detail what i didnt like it despite the fact the masses played it. again this is my opinion. CRAFTING: was very poor in WOW. I thought it was horrible and useless. ECONOMY: same very poor. Basically everything you find from drops were sold. Nothing a player can do to actually make money from crafting. the best gear in game was not craftable. It sits in a dungeon. This to ME, is killer. Why i would not put WOW up on such a high pedestal. I never liked this model of play. Id prefer the player be allowed to create the items needed for other players. Linear gameplay: I didnt like the fact that once you leave the area you are pretty much done with it. Basically you moved thru the land to level up... tiered so you can continue on with your character development. I would prefer a more open world with choices of where to go level and do stuff rather then this spot is for 1-5 and the next spot is for 5-9 etc etc... of course this is only my personal opinion and how i feel. quests... not thought out.. very boring.. go here kill 10 things go here kill 20 things... hey get my necklace the fat pig has it. go kill him.... do this for x amount of levels. Yuck. classes.. very limited.. not many.... races.. . not many... very limited castle sieging... do they even have castles or keeps to siege? not really.. all pvp that has purpose is isntanced.. otherwise it is a mass of poeple sitting in one spot or a city waiting for another mass to come by and see who is last man standing. Housing... non existant. graphics... umm cartoony pastel graphics not comparable to even an older game like dark age of camelot. the graphics are better in that game and its an extremely older game then WOW. player city... no opportunity in this game seamless World... nope non existant character customization... i will give it some credit here however they still need to fix there trees so that there isnt only one or two viable ways lessing the customization. yeah they may have all the subs that surpass all other MMOs but bottom line is it because its a good game? Is it because it is easier on a low grade computer? Is it because warcraft RTS series was such a huge success worldwide for such a LONG TIME? Do you possibly know these answers? No you dont.. neither do . But i can give you my opinions as to why I dont think its a good game...
I'm not telling anyone they have to love or like wow. That is your misconception, not mine. Everything I say could be said by someone who completely hates wow and still remain relevant. I am not the one who must label people zealots or fanboi in order to support my claims.
I am arguing for or against issues, not the people who post those issues. Believe it or not I am totally fine that you and millions of other people do not enjoying wow. Really I am totally content with that and I do understand some people enjoy other games. However when you need to tear down millions of other people in order to build up your claims then I think that is worthy of being pointed out for its failure.
If I disagree with your views, then you cry about how I am trying to force you to love wow, despite me saying anything to that effect. On the other hand anyone who doesn't agree with your view you label as dumb, stupid and any number of other insults as if that makes your views superior. Nice double standard you have.
As for your list of reasons you don't like wow, cool. I hope you are enjoying the mmo that does offer all those features you find missing in wow. I sure wouldn't mind giving that game a try, which one is it?
P.S. Sorry I misspell a few words. I hope it is not so distracting that you can't read my thoughts for what they are and instead attack my grammar.
It's a pure sin to have this win game of the decade. I wouldn't even give it MMO of the decade. That's like giving Halo 3 FPS of the decade. WoW did NOTHING original, not a single unique idea. Where's the award for EverQuest, or Dark Age of Camelot, the two games WoW took ALL of its ideas from, and then watered them down for kiddies?
I didn't know both these games had the 2 most orginal ideas of any mmorpg...: 24/7 GROUP gameplay ....
Cross server Battlegrounds (PvP) and cross server Dungeons (Pve) against an open seamless world of questing and crafting and open world PvP like City Raids and REAL animated landscape changes and mounted Siege mechanics.
I didn't see FLYING either and background loading like in Outland/Northrend.
And of course the world changing phasing mechanic (without loading screens) was also new.
Mhhh ... Did these two have DUAL specs (Could you play tank, healer, dps with just ONE character on the fly?).
Did they have SCALED Raiding difficulty. Did they have Arena and a ladder based PvP system with OUT of the game competition as an E-sport
And last but not least did they also have more than 11.600.000 players and a turnover of 1.200.000.000 $ US on a yearly basis.
Nothing original ?

Originally posted by Tobias3 You seem very confused. You don't seem to be able to see the difference between an actually full developed game world, and the type of content being offered by WoW and the new Star Wars MMO. Instances, item shops, quest based leveling, broken linear world, it's starting to not even resemble an MMO. Look at EverQuest's world, and look at WoW's. If EQ can manage what it did in 1999, and WOW can't even live up to it's shadow, something is wrong.
Don't delude yourself, I'm far from confused.
I'm well aware of the diference between a sandbox "world" and an instanced, themepark "game" .. I've played both, I've enjoyed both, but I prefer the latter. Most people do.
And don't delude yourself further; WoW doesn't have instancing because Blizzard is incapable of building a game without it; it's a mechanic specifcally designed to offer a tailored and controlled game experience that can not be negatively affected by griefers, campers or bots.
The first instance I know of was when UO introduced Trammel. They did that for a reason.

You have hit the nail on the head I believe. Its not the game itself that generates the wow hate. I personally know people that play wow and enjoy it. They just do not feel the need to convince me its the best thing since sliced bread. On the other side of the coin there arre folks that hate everything wow. All in all I think anti-fanboy is a pretty good description of me. I played wow until the fun stopped, so I know what the game entails and the hype is wasted on me. So in your RL MMO can I be an anit-fanboy death knight? Not a WOW deathknight but a real one like in the Dragonlance novels?
The genre is growing in popularity, scope and innovation. This is a Golden age for MMOs.
Just curious in a previous post I talked about s-curves and asked where people saw MMOs to be at. So why do you think that it has not reached the 90% market penetration and is going to plateau? I am not sure really where MMOs are at in the curve, kind of curious to see why you believe what you believe.

Its really not difficult to understand why wows #1 fan would consider repeating the same tired content as viable, be it in a discussion or in gameplay.
The genre is growing in popularity, scope and innovation. This is a Golden age for MMOs.

I don't think it'll plateau.
We have a steady stream of new players joining the genre, which is becoming more and more high-profile. I don't know what the churn rate at the top-end of the gaming population is, but if this forum is any indication then older gamers don't die, they just come here to grumble.

I'm not telling anyone they have to love or like wow. never said you did? that was sarcasm by the way. That is your misconception, not mine. no misconception.. its you not catching the sarcastic statement about the defenders who constantly attack somebody saying anyting remotely negative about WOW. Everything I say could be said by someone who completely hates wow and still remain relevant. I am not the one who must label people zealots or fanboi in order to support my claims. LOL yes a FAN.. how is that a label.. they are fans.. they love the game... and then you got people like Zorndorf who spams on EVERY THREAD that has WOW in it.. about his economic claims.. that is right up there what zealots do... look up the meaning.. im not going to do it for you.
I am arguing for or against issues, not the people who post those issues. Believe it or not I am totally fine that you and millions of other people do not enjoying wow. If I disagree with your views, then you cry about how I am trying to force you to love wow, despite me saying anything to that effect. LOL again.. .you really read too literally... taht comment was towards a fan or fanboy.. whatever you choose to say... on how they are... if i dont love their game.. they rush to convince you otherwise.that was NOT saying YOU persay. On the other hand anyone who doesn't agree with your view you label as dumb, stupid and any number of other insults as if that makes your views superior. Nice double standard you have. no i called you stupid because you thru up 3 really dumb analogies. to show you were right about how poor an analogy is because you can say bouncy ball and WOW in the same sentence not even catching on to the concept of the usage of Analogy...
now let me help you... WOW is like a bouncy ball because it subs one year was at 11 million and this year is at 10 milllion yet next year they claim it will be 12 million after their next expansion.. so their subs are bouncing around like a bouncing ball... there that is much better then the stupid one you did.
you can take ANYTHING i can take a my desk here which has crap all over it from work and make an analogy to WOW if i tried hard enough. Thats why its called analogy.. you kept going off on comparison. Which is totally different.
As for your list of reasons you don't like wow, cool. I hope you are enjoying the mmo that does offer all those features you find missing in wow. I sure wouldn't mind giving that game a try, which one is it? actually not playing an MMO at this point in time... the MMO market is pretty crappy at the moment... i am hoping some company wises up and tries to make something more unique and different then looking at WOW. which is exactly what i said before too.. if i want to play a game that is like WOW.. there is no point... i will just sub up my WOW account.
P.S. Sorry I misspell a few words. I hope it is not so distracting that you can't read my thoughts for what they are and instead attack my grammar. its not grammar... its spelling.. big difference. and i was just correcting you thats it... nothing else intended.. if you said oh yeah typo thanks.. it would of been left at that. but you really are uptight on every issue anybody brings up.

GW is no MMORPG by lack of the blue.
Ahh, the old change the argument when your argument fails technique. Can't say I'm surprised.
I'm surprised you would switch to such a terrible argument though. MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The RPG speaks for itself. Lets look at MMO. Nothing you described is necessary for an MMO to be an MMO.
Massively: Guild Wars allows every single player that buys the game to play together on the same "Realm". That's over a few million people, pretty massive.
Multiplayer: yeah, you can play with people.
Online: yeah, you play online.
MMORPG.com considers Guild Wars an MMORPG. But lets be honest, you only made that claim because you knew you were called on your lie.

No I have left the game and will not return. Once the fun is gone from a game its gone. I tried going back to wow and a few others that I played and left and once the fun is gone its gone. However, I might give the rumored upcoming Blizz mmo a try and Diablo 3 will be something i will buy. WOW was fun, until it wasnt. By the way I played wow into WOTLK and for me 1-60 was the best part of the game so changing things in the lower levels would not be a help for me.
I think most games are like that. The only games I can remember going back to and actually playing again are the ones that I didn't have time to play more than a couple of hours the first time around. I think I have retried every MMO I ever played as well as dozens of offline games and I just can never get back into them.

Truth.
Although I tend to go back to Civilization (4 nowadays) now and then. MMO's I hardly ever go back to though. Once the fun is over, it's over for that game.
There is a way to test your anti-fanboy chops.
I'm assuming from this and other posts that you are one of those gamers who quit WoW before capping because you didn't find it fun. It would be hypocritical of me to condemn that, as I've done exactly the same myself in other MMOs.
So, the question is thus:
WoW is releasing a new expansion aimed at fixing the lacklustre low-level content.
Will you try that free trial?

So and because it is no longer FUN for you, you HATE WOW and its players.
And you can not stand it that WOW won a price of "game of the decade" by posting hundreds of typical anti WOW posts on mmorpg.com. From MacDonalds to personal atttacks against me.
Once again Zorn you are in such a hurry to defend your baby you failed to read or comprehend what was being said. Im not anti-wow, im anti fanboy. But dont take it personally, im anti McDonalds also.

I am assuming you are talking about the game of the decade award? Honestly I could care less who wins that. What ultimately matters is if I (or whoever is playing) enjoy the game. I have enjoyed playing WoW for a time. I enjoy playing other games as well. Was WoW the most enjoyable of the decade for me? No, but that is just personal. I certainly don't begrudge WoW winning the award though.

I wouldn't play a game either if it wasn't fun anymore. That could explain why I left WoW two times, and many other games and mmos along the way. Each time I played WoW I played for 7 month stretches and then got bored and took breaks.
I didn't see grandpagamer say he hated wow players at all, but even if he did I can see why people might begin to hate them. After I left WoW and tried to tell people my reasoning for taking a break WoW players tend to get too defensive. Then they lash out at those that do not feel the same about the game as they do even if the other person isn't being mean or bashing the game. I am sorry to say WoW isn't perfect no game is, and some people just need to deal with knowing that others might have differing opinions.

Pretty much how I feel too(except about the 1-60 part). I did enjoy WoW for a bit, but eventually I realized that it was one gear treadmill I didn't want to run on anymore. I tried going back for WotLK but found that expansion uninspiring and more of the same(Waits for Zorn to try to prove to me that his opinion about how revolutionary WotLK was is better than mine). I always found 1-60/70 to be the most boring, pointless time sink in the game and I hated almost every minute I spent leveling. End game was some what fun, but got boring quickly too. I won't be going back to WoW, ever.
The only MMO that I have gotten bored of and gone back to and fallen back into the game is GW. I have played that hardcore and gotten burned out, only to return again and play hardcore 3-4 times now. The game is just good and offers a lot.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Now it comes down to wanting people to say " I played the game and found others more enjoyable but wow is still the best game of the decade". So you want those who do not share the joy of wow with you to make a contradictory statement to appease your need to convert the world?

now let me help you...

You say things like "Take your own advice" and now you say I take things to literally and you were not talking about me? Do you even read what you write before you hit the submit post button? Honestly you would give any politician a run for their money in your constant waffling.
Look at the giant highlighted text. Read it carefully. You claim I don't understand what an analogy is and then you say that? The whole point of the analogy is the comparison of wow to mcdonalds! Seriously you say I don't understand when you make comments like that? Heaven forbid someone focus on the comparison aspect of an analogy, what should they focus on instead? Please do tell. LOL an analogy and a comparison are totally different you say. Thanks for clearing up who doesn't understand what is going on. HAHA
Just like you cannot differentiate between me tearing down an analogy and tearing down the person who posted it. Your constant drifting back and forth between those concepts makes it hard to have a real discussion with you.
It is also funny that you call my analogies stupid (which they were intended to be to show the ridiculousness they can reach), but I can't find someone elses analogy stupid? Do you have some rule book that defines good and bad analogies? Even your red ball analogy illustrates exactly what I am saying is bad about using analogies. You slipped in some misinformation and then pretend it is fact by hiding it in an analogy. Wow hasn't claimed 11 then 10 then 12 million subs. They only make claims when they reach new record levels. That is why I dislike analogies. It is to easy to screw things up, transplant facts from one to another and the only real effect is to try to associate a negative stigma of something like fast food onto a video game. As if that is a valid comparison and has anything to do with an mmo.
P.S. I don't feel the need to correct peoples spelling or grammar, because I'm not a school teacher and it is rather petty.

Yes as ive stated I have friends who still play WOW and are reasonable enough to understand that there are other games out there. Some people I believe are letting WOW play them. I have never seen such anger and jealousy over an inanimate object. If this is what WOW has brought to the genre perhaps, most detrimental video game of the decade would be more fitting.

I'm pretty sure there is more fanboyism between Sony and M$. Even HD and BD, even though HD is dead.

Guild Wars allowed ANYONE that played the game to do ANYTHING, PvE and PvP, together 24/7 4 years before WoW finally caught up. Once again, your posts are low on facts, high on advertising.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic

Don't delude yourself, I'm far from confused.
I'm well aware of the diference between a sandbox "world" and an instanced, themepark "game" .. I've played both, I've enjoyed both, but I prefer the latter. Most people do.
And don't delude yourself further; WoW doesn't have instancing because Blizzard is incapable of building a game without it; it's a mechanic specifcally designed to offer a tailored and controlled game experience that can not be negatively affected by griefers, campers or bots.
The first instance I know of was when UO introduced Trammel. They did that for a reason.

Just curious in a previous post I talked about s-curves and asked where people saw MMOs to be at. So why do you think that it has not reached the 90% market penetration and is going to plateau? I am not sure really where MMOs are at in the curve, kind of curious to see why you believe what you believe.
Guild Wars allowed ANYONE that played the game to do ANYTHING, PvE and PvP, together 24/7 4 years before WoW finally caught up. Once again, your posts are low on facts, high on advertising.
I repeat the sentence BACK again then:
"Cross server Battlegrounds (PvP) and cross server Dungeons (Pve) against an open seamless world of questing and crafting and open world PvP like City Raids and REAL animated landscape changes and mounted Siege mechanics."
WOW = Package ALL in ... GW doesn't even have an Auction House, let alone it is considered an MMORPG with the obvious lack of the principle content mentioned in the blue.

So guys ???
Already found your single game that has 1.2 Billion dollars revenu on a yearly basis ???
No?
Well then, WOW wins the economic race, so game of the decade, with all options included (even the players)...
And I repeat again, you claimed WoW had the two most original ideas of any MMO, cross server PvE and cross server PvP, essentially allowing anyone to play with anyone. Both of these were already done by Guild Wars 4 years ago. Other parts of the game have nothing to do with this false claim.

Its really not difficult to understand why wows #1 fan would consider repeating the same tired content as viable, be it in a discussion or in gameplay.

I don't think it'll plateau.
We have a steady stream of new players joining the genre, which is becoming more and more high-profile. I don't know what the churn rate at the top-end of the gaming population is, but if this forum is any indication then older gamers don't die, they just come here to grumble.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

So will you all finally see the overall economic impact of a succesful game instead of looking at the personal belly ?

Now it comes down to wanting people to say " I played the game and found others more enjoyable but wow is still the best game of the decade". So you want those who do not share the joy of wow with you to make a contradictory statement to appease your need to convert the world?
