I'm pretty sure there is more fanboyism between Sony and M$. Even HD and BD, even though HD is dead.
I think every game company has its fans and owning a PS3 ive caught some crap from xbox owning friends but it is just poking fun and is taken as such. Personally ive never seen the level of anger and hatred that the WOW fans generate. This will draw a lot of fire im sure but again, it goes back to maturity and WOW has more than its share of immature players, in age and mentality.

Hey, it's the age of internet - there's "fanboyism" over anything.
While that may be true I think the Halo crowd, and anti-fan crowd, are close if not ahead in the hatred department.
The comunity in wow is bad because the game promotes elitism. Simple as that.
In games where the adventure, exploration, story and teamwork are promoted the community tends to be much better.
Wow is based on elitism, gear and overall player superiority over the others. Offcourse those that are better geared, belong to a better guild or pvp team will want to show that to the others. Makes them feel special, and thats what a virtual existence is for, to be what one cannot be in real life.
Probably the big number of elitists and jerks hanging around in online games are non-popular or anti-social people on real life, so they deserve some pity. Cut them some slack =P

I think Apple zealots give WoW drones a run for their money.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
I ask you two questions. If it's not WoW, what is it? And second, if we were counting it from 1999-2009, would it be EverQuest? Much as WoW helped make MMOs mainstream, EQ is what made them mainstream enough for WoW to exist. No one knew or cared about MMOs until EQ changed that.
Important facts:
1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
4. Community is more important than you think.

Funnily enough i'd say its the other way around, most of the hate comes from the anti-wow crowd, im pretty sure that 99 percent of WoW players, either dont even bother with forums - assuming their even aware of them that is, and likely arent aware of any controversy.. and probably couldnt care less even if they did. and while there certainly is a fair number of immature players in wow, unless your actually playing the game, you won't encounter them. Of course, immature behaviour isnt the sole domain of wow players. But the as i have stated already, the WoW haters seem to be the ones generating all the negativity. I would add, however, that maturity, or lack of it, is not necessarily relative to a persons age, a surprising number of 'older' gamers these days seem to display a singular lack fo maturity too, which is you'll have to admit, somewhat ironic
But theres no doubt WoW evolved it even more, and changed the market in a way EQ cant even dream about.
As fas as influence goes WoW is miles ahead of every other game in the last decade, and that is for sure.
So, it is surely the game of the decade. But not the BEST game of the decade
Who says the game of the decade has to be an mmo? If it is just mmo of the decade than yeah, it's a pretty clear choice in my opinion. The problem you encounter is when you add in other genres and game platforms. You will never get a consensus on this. I'm willing to bet that out of all the gaming websites and magazines out there that you'll be hard pressed to find the same game winning in 2 of them, let alone the majority.
Half-life 2, Oblivion, God of War,Mass Effect, these are all games I consider more innovative and better than WOW and I could go on and on and on. Again, its not MMO of the decade its GAME of the decade that the WOW fans are trying to get people to accept. For this game to be voted as such the Chicago machines policy of vote early and vote often was surely implemented.

So its 11 Million people again? Yesterday I read as high as 13 million and as low as around 6 million and believe if the true numbers were known it would shake the foundations of the church of wow, but at any rate. I have played several MMO''s and have never seen the hatred I see the wow fans generates. Ive heard others say the same but of course they most likely are wrong not being one of the brotherhood. Life is full of ironies Daff, like WOW being voted game of the decade. Ridiculous I know but it seems to be.
Just curious in a previous post I talked about s-curves and asked where people saw MMOs to be at. So why do you think that it has not reached the 90% market penetration and is going to plateau? I am not sure really where MMOs are at in the curve, kind of curious to see why you believe what you believe.
I don't think it'll plateau.
We have a steady stream of new players joining the genre, which is becoming more and more high-profile. I don't know what the churn rate at the top-end of the gaming population is, but if this forum is any indication then older gamers don't die, they just come here to grumble.
Well that is a nice sentiment, ever technology or product since they started tracking s-curves (over a hundred years ago) has reached a plateau on market penetration. It is just a matter of whether or not MMOs have hit the 90% market penetration and are going to become stagnate till the next new item comes out. Or if it is still in the building section of the s-curve the 10%-90%. I personally think it is in the building, but I have never actually looked up the data on what different research companies say is the 10% mark for the market. Might have to do that some time! Also does anyone know of any companies that release revenue reports for the gaming industry as a whole? I am curious to see what the market looks like now.

True enough, things in EQ could get quite heated at times, sometimes think that EQ probably invented hardcore gaming.... one bad pull/train to zone etc and you'd have to hide offline for days to avoid the hate!

It deserves a nod for best mmorpg of the last decade but not best all around game. Plenty of other games out there that deserve that distinction over WoW in my opinion. Not a slight towards WoW to me anyways although I'm sure some will feel it is.
Mmorpg wise though it would be hard to argue against it. Although in the end it's all subjective anyways.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

well, not joining in can be a bit limiting... im not talking so much about WoW now though, tbh, from what i've seen of that game, you can pretty much solo your way through it.. in Eve however, 'joining in' is a necessity. admittedly, you can solo some things, in Eve, you dont have to join a corporation to mine or run missions.. but to get into the real meat of the game, you have to be willing to work with others, and that for me is where most of the fun in an MMO is, if it was me i would have voted Eve Online as game of the decade, there arent really any other games out there that work the same way as Eve, sadly however, its a niche game, its sci fi, in a genre largely dominated by fantasy games, and you can't see your own feet
and that seems to put people off. which is a shame really.

Hmm, doesn't specifically imply a desire to join in playing WoW though.
I'm sure there are a fair number of people who aren't currently happy in the MMO that they are playing, (if they're playing an MMO at all) and harbour ill-feeling towards WoW players on the basis that we have a quality product available that suits our preferences.

I don't know the exact number, but 11 million seems to be the accepted number since blizzard has repeated that number a few times. Somewhere around there anyhow. Not that there is much difference in you generalizing and insulting 6 million or 11 million to make your point seem valid. Agreed?
If your mmo exposure leads you to believe that wow is has the most hatred of anything then I must call your experience very limited. Almost anyone here who experienced EQ back in the day can tell you horror stories of pure bottomless hatred. It was honestly so bad that games back then had to make sweeping changes to their games in response. Trammel for example is one such change. SOEs play nice policy is another. EQVault going from thousands of posts a day to a ghost town once they started to enforce the no flaming policy.
Ridiculous that game developers voted wow the game of the decade. I don't know, it receives enough accolades and recognition for its gameplay. Game developers across the board respect wow for many of its features, designs and management. I can certainly understand some reasons why they would make that choice. [before you go pants on head crazy on me, do not read that as me endorsing their choice ok?]
Why you think your hatred of the game would make that ridiculous or ironic is beyond me. I think it just shows how little objectivity you have in the discussion.
