WOW is NOT competing against MacDonalds to reach status of "game of the decade".
True. But the analogy still stands.

Sure it may be the game of the decade runner up to super mario or something but that is just what is is,you cant compare this game with the real mmorpg, it would like comparing packman with ultima online.
WoW = Massive numbers, subjective quality, same prices.
Fixed that for you.
So there really is a comparison there.....
I fixed your fix.
Hmmm now it doesn't add up why they are suppose to be in similar....
Uh....what?
That makes no sense......most fast food is similarly priced just like most MMO's are similarly priced.
What was your point again?
McDonald's is by far cheaper priced compared to the overall quality/variety of food they serve when compared to similar establishments. Burger King and Wendy's menu prices cannot directly compare to McDonald's, this is why you always see commercials talking about better beef, Idaho potatoes, grilled fresh or some other means to reflect why they are the better choice, but in the end, McDonald's is know to be CHEAP......period.
There obviously is no direct comparison because they offer different products, hence the SIMILARLY priced for similar goods. Amongst fast food chains, prices are similar for similar products offered from the main menus to the budget menus.
The commercials claiming differences are there to draw seperation between competitiors and make them seem like they are better than the other in one way or another when in reality they are very similar. Can you honestly tell me there is a significant difference in quality between a fast food resturant that uses french fries from Idaho potatoes and one that doesn't? I doubt it. In other words it's just marketing gimmick.
I see you're fond of using the word SIMILAR, but in the scope of P2P MMOs, the top feeders of the MMO market are ALL priced the same. And the minute you add in that there are CHEAPER alternatives for the same if not BETTER quality than what Blizzard is offering then that whole analogy falls flat on it's face.
Why would someone pay for something of lesser quality if they can get something of greater quality at the same price? Or why would they pay for something of a lesser quality, when they can get something of similar quality for a cheaper price? All fast food joints have varied prices for a number of products and MMOs have 1 product to push.....period.
So you nor anyone else here can convince me that WoW is cheap, fast, easy AND bad for you. But people are willing to line up in droves to pay for something that does NOT:
Feed a biological need
Feed a chemical need
Feed a financial need (because it's the cheapest!)
MMOs are nothing more than a part-time timesink, satisfying nothing more than the need to be entertained for a while.

WOW is NOT competing against MacDonalds to reach status of "game of the decade".
True. But the analogy still stands.
Why? Because there are no similarities apart from the fact both industries are succesful moneywise....
So Microsoft is like MacDonalds, Mercedes is like Mac Donalds, American Football is like MacDonalds, Ford is like MacDonalds, Coca Cola is like MacDonalds (at least they share the food industry).
Price is not even an issue (as WOW IS expensive compared to CoD or a Pokemon game).
So where does that start the analogy ??? for ALL these zillion other succesful products. ????
You could use Coca Cola in place of Mc Donalds in comparison to WOW I guess if coke is the best selling soda that is. Im not sure what the top selling automobile in the world is but I doubt its the highest quality vehicle built because most folks could not afford it. Once again, the analogy is used to show that the best selling of something doesnt make it the best available. Just like McDonalds or Coke (if applicable) they may sell the most but I prefer a better quality meal. WOW may sell the most, but I prefer a better quality game.
Just like McDonalds or Coke (if applicable) they may sell the most but I prefer a better quality meal. WOW may sell the most, but I prefer a better quality game.
If anyone has ever really summed things up, it's this man right here.

Like we have been trying to get through everyone's thick skull here. Those two sentences CANNOT be used together and thus the analogy fails. The definition of better is left to those that use it as they see fit.
If all cars cost the same, naturally people would buy the better quality car, but that still doesn't make it the best car.
If all meals cost the same, do you think for a minute McDonald's would be at the top?
But ALL the biggest MMOs cost EXACTLY the same, yet WoW is on top? But for some reason it now has nothing to do with quality...I call BS. People don't pay the same price for a plain ass hamburger of poor quality as they would for a top steak dinner. But so many of you are saying that MMOs should be looked at like different kinds of food and it's YOUR choice what foods they represent. Even though they all cost the same.......again I call BS.

Whether you accept this analogy or not there is a bigger problem with this Game Of The Decade farce. That being, that its GAME of the decade not MMO of the decade. Anyone besides Zorn willing to say that WOW is the best video game of the last decade?
You can tie this in for every succesful economic product in its range ... in our society. But the analogy doesn't make sense because every succesful product can be named within this "analogy". From Microsoft, to Apple, from Mercedes to Hilton Hotels. WOW is NOT competing against MacDonalds to reach status of "game of the decade". )) And btw Economic succes is a FACT. Opinion has nothing to do with it.
Maybe you missed the boat and need to go back to read where the analogy came from? Everyone seems to fall back on "WoW is the most popular, therefor is must be the best thing ever", and critics in turn will point out that "McDonalds sells more food than any other restaurant out there, and by number it is the most popular, but it is far from the best." You personally hate this analogy because in every thread you are always falling back on numbers or popularity, but if the number don't mean what you want them to mean, well that would challenge what you choose to believe. People tend to get very defensive when that happens, and we are a bit beyond that point where you can even be rational.
Try to read what I write.
I said that Blizzard's WOW is the most succesful game in 30 years history of video games because it generated the best money making single game.
I never said "popular", because succesful is based on economic facts/earings per year.
I never said "best thing ever".
It is an economic fact WOW is the best money maker of all single video games ever.
That's a simple economic fact and therefore has an influence in social, financial and cultural behaviour in our society.... regarding ... video games ... not fast food habits.
Shouldn't be too hard to read what I write.
1. WoW is not a single game, it is a base game with two expansions, and a bunch of mini-expansions that come in patches which people pay for with monthly subscription fees. The Mario franchise has brought in more money.
2. It is successful, but that doesn't mean what you want it to mean. It is estimated that 190 million homes will have game consoles by 2012, but I'm sure it will be still be the same 6.5 million subscribers in NA and Europe for WoW. How has WoW changed the gaming world outside of MMOs? Console game sales might have been hurt by the economy, but it still the same formula, and the same type of games like Modern Warfare II breaking sales records. None of these games are WoW clones, or could even be compared, but the sales figures are still in the millions (*edit* of units) every month.
3. Virtual Items and Property is the current movement.. estimated at over a billion dollars in sales next year, and will probably keep growing for years to come. I'm sure WoW will try to take a piece of that pie, but it shows that the world doesn't have a big interest in subscription model games.
4. You debunked an analogy by stating that McDonalds is not competing for game of the decade? If this were the debate club, you'd be waterboy.. lol or maybe cabin boy.
Quality? Whats quality? Lets see. Production values, WOW's got it. Variety of content? WOW's got that in spades. Great PvE? Got it. A deep combat engine that relies on twitch skill and tactical knowledge all at a quick pace. PvP that people win money for and enter huge competitive tournaments. Only WOW has it. Fun? Got it. Most players? Got it. Influence? Got it. Intuitive? Got it. Great interface? Got it. Graphics that still hold up after 5 years? Got it. It can be really easy to play yet be so challenging, most people can't even complete much of the content. Thats not a simple accomplishment.
So lets compare to Eve, another MMO launched after 2000, which people love to claim is a quality MMO. Eve has great graphics, deep gameplay, a great server structure and a player economy like no other. All quality features. BUT, most people who try it find it amazingly boring. It might have lots of depth, but its just not FUN for most people. Thats a fact. While the PvP is as deep as it gets, the PvE is just so poorly done and lacks variety. The whole game is just not intuitive at all which is a another sign of a lack of quality. The interface is atrocious which doesn't scream quality either. The world is great to look at, but its repetitive & EMPTY. Theres just nothing to interact with except rocks. Other space MMOs like E&B showed space can be much more interesting to fly through and contain a wider variety of enemy ships & space creatures and you can visit planets & run through space stations. Eve only has space ships and you can never leave them...yet, even after 6 years. No MMOs have tried to emulate Eve either, so its influence is non existent.
So of the two games, which has more features that appeal to more people and has garnered more critical acclaim? They both grew over their lifetime instead of peaking after a year or two. They both cost the same to play monthly. But Eve is actually CHEAPER to play since its expansions are all free. How many players would quit if CCP charged $30 an expansion? Think about it. WOW charges people more, yet more play=) So if WOW isn't a quality MMO, what the heck is?
Lord Seru, who's new years alt account are you? Had to make a new account to come here and bash WOW, hehe=)

Ive asked this before and you will never answer, so again. Is there any aspect of WOW you do not like?
I have answered your question before. Sorry if you didn't bother reading it.
Now, will talking about my likes/dislikes of wow change the ridiculousness of talking about hamburgers as if it makes a valid point about video games?
Must have missed it. So what was the answer?
Will my answer change the ridiculousness of talking about hamburgers as if it has anything to do with a video game?
Not that I don't think your question itself is ridiculous to begin with.
Perhaps an honest answer to the question would be what is ridiculous.
It is a stupid assumption to think that I would not have any issues with wow, which makes it a totally ridiculous question for you to ask. Just because I find your line of discussion irrelevant doesn't mean I an not objective about wow.
Just like it is ridiculous of you to always try to derail a topic into a discussion about the person posting and not the issues they are posting. It is simply what you always fall back to when your points get shown to be weak and nothing more than hot air.
So here is your answer again, since you always need someone else to do your homework: there are plenty of things about wow I do not like.
Now how about you stop avoiding a question.
Why do you need to derail the discussion to talk about the people who post instead of the issues they post?
How does questioning what I dislike about wow have any relevance on the ridiculous nature of talking about hamburgers and pretending that it is somehow relative to a discussion about video games?
you seriously have a problem understanding analogies... McDonald's was brought up as an analogy.
SO MANY people are basing off the success of WOW(Sub numbers and MOney) as the reason it should be Game of the decade instead of what the actual part of the game deserves it.
SO basically somebody said why bring up money as showing its quality. that does not show iits a quality game...
hence why McD's was brought up... look at mcdonalds... because they sold billions of hamburgers and made billions of dollars...
but what is the quality of mcdonalds? its not good. we all know this. That is why it is brought up... its called analogy... and you are looking into it like its literal. Think outside the box dude. WOW!!!! go get some education if you seriously cant understand what an analogy is.
WOW just because made millions just like McD's does it mean its a quality game... if you broke down the game you would see it falls short on a LOT of things.
as for the other fanboy who keeps spooing out garbage about how no other game has made more money then WOW.
ONE GAME i can mention that is better then WOW if you all want to go the money route.... one example...
MADDEN FOOTBALL... it came out with an upgrade EVERY YEAR since the early 90s this game upgraded its players gameplay and graphics since day 1. It has made way more money then WOW could ever dream of. So get off the high horse of WOW making more money then any other game. its made millions each year since its release since day 1. and most likely continue on for decades to come. hell madden is already on its second decade... WOW hasnt even reached one yet.
The fanboys understand the analogies, but it refutes the logic of the numbers game which is always thrown out to show how great WOW is. Bizzard money has bought a lot of the success WOW has seen. If you were running a magazine or a website what kind of reviews would you give the big advertisers? Advertising buys more than just advertisement.
Oh the classic fallback to advertising buying great reviews.
SOE buys advertising on this site, lets see how many people here think soe is a great company. How many websites talk about the high quality that soe puts out. Take your time finding the awards and praise of soes quality. Oh wait they don't and they don't. Maybe blizzard is paying sites and people to keep soes quality a secret? Especially here, because blizzard is so concerned with mmorpg.com that they don't even advertise here.
I think that sufficiently shits all over your little theory wouldn't you say?
You also mentioned in another post that wow is cheap and easy. Why don't people like you ever complete your comparisons without having to resort to talking about hamburgers. Why don't you ever compare apples to apples and talk about mmos?
Just answer one, wow is CHEAP compared to what fantasy mmo? I would love to hear you answer that, but I doubt you can. The entire mmo community outside of this burned out angst filled site recognizes the quality blizzard brought to the mmo genre, but we are to believe the bitter homeless mmo wanderes here that wow is cheap? That is the makings for a quality newletter if ever there was one.
The reason people like you never complete your comparison is that you know just how hollow the answer will be. That is why you have to resort to hamburgers and teen pop singers. You don't compare wow to other mmos, because you know how failed your theory already is.
Take away your hamburgers, your gross generalization of 11 million subscribers, lack of reading comprehension, payola conspiracies and all that is left is that you dislike the game.
thats why i think star wars:TOR will be the next success after all these years Bioware has great rep and great skill just like blizz. baldurs gate, neverwinter nights all great classics and neverwinter is proof they can jump into mmo market like blizz went brom battle.net into mmo market.
Whether you accept this analogy or not there is a bigger problem with this Game Of The Decade farce. That being, that its GAME of the decade not MMO of the decade. Anyone besides Zorn willing to say that WOW is the best video game of the last decade?
Well, it's the game I've played the most and had the most fun playing in the past 10 years, so yeah.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

I understand the analogy just fine, but it is flawed, incomplete and just plain wrong. Fast food is relatively low quality across the board and even more so when compared to food establishments of a dissimilar nature like a steak restaurant. Thus why it is a bad analogy and the second part is never completed.
Most compare wow to McDonalds, but then pretend as if the rest of the mmo genre is something other than fast food in the analogy. It is not a comparison of SIMILAR PRODUCTS. If Wow is mcdonalds and such low quality as you say, then name the 5 star steak dinner restaurant mmo to complete the analogy? If the analogy is so great, complete it.
I will give you a fill in the blank to make it easier:
In a comparison of quality
wow = McDonalds
EQ2 = _________
Vanguard = ___________
Warhammer = __________
Age of Conan = ____________
Lets see what quality analogies you have to support the McDonalds thoery. Don't be bashful, feel free to enlighten me about what I don't understand. Step right up and back up your claims. I anxiously await your answers and it should provide for an amusing read.
Just because mcdonalds servers food and is popular doesn't mean it is a good comparison to an mmo. Not to mention the level of ignorance that people using the analogy display, because among FAST FOOD establishments, McDonalds actually rates very high in quality. Example People just assume that because McDonalds is the largest it must be the worst. It is that ignorance that allows places like burger king to serve 2,000 calorie meatnormous death sandwiches, while people cry about McDonalds how bad McDonalds is. People simply pick on McD's, because it is popular and assume that must mean bad, much like the you are doing here.
The only reason people choose McDonalds is to associate wow with the negative stigma fast food has. That is it and there is no other reason. If you want to talk about how cheap wow is, do so with an example of wows gameplay and back it up with examples of another mmos gameplay that is vastly superior. Don't talk about a hamburger, talk about mmos.
Yet when you look at the mmo industry, you will see game reviewers, websites, critics and players across the board praise wow for its superior quality to other mmos. This site seem to live in denial of the rest of the market for some reason. That is why they hide behind hamburgers and not talk directly about the game.
Its really not that important, considering who gave this award. However, I would hope more thought when into such a vote than this, this is basically saying that the game play in WOW is the best that has been produced in the last 10 years. WOW has better game-play than every RPG from KOTOR to Oblivion, every shooter from COD1 to Far Cry2 every strategy game etc....?
That is quite a big claim to make.

This post wins.
And not sure why people are debating about the quality of WoW.. it is a high quality game. High production values, stable, many options, blah blah blah. If you don't believe it go try one of the many craptastic F2P MMOs. But just because something is made well doesn't mean everyone will enjoy it (although in WoW's case the majority of MMO gamers do). You could be a chef and make the finest crème brûlée, but if someone hates those then it doesn't matter how well it was made, but just because they don't like it doesn't mean they deny it's quality. Uh oh another analogy to food..

I would agree that WOW is the game of the decade. There have been some other great games, but WOW has endured and will continue to endure for a long time to come, while other games which at first glance seem popular today will fade from the collective consciousness in a year or two.

Because in the end, we know better than most of those folks you mentioned. (who for the most part have never played the game past level 40)
I still agree, its MMO of the decade though due to its huge influence on the MMO landscape.
But not necessarily because its a great game. (Its a good one though, I'll grant that)

And just because McDonalds might not have as high of calorie content as some things, how many people are going to say it tastes better than food from a fine restaurant, or that it's healthier than LOCAL fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat. Come on.

This type of willful ignorance is what keeps this genre in the dark ages. Gamasultra is a game developer's website, so it IS a big deal. And more power to any MMO that gets kudos from the industry. This is not about gameplay, try thinking beyond the superficial concept of what game of the decade means. Industry insiders are recognizing that the MMO genre is nothing to sneeze at and I could care less if Goodbye Doggie Fetch Boy Fetch! Online Adventures got us to the starting point. We are at a starting point and that's all I need.

Thats why it is a rather silly award. It is just to hard to pick something for being the best among a sea of everything.
I think wow was an easy pick, because it has stayed in the top ten best selling games for the last 5 years and no other game even comes close to that.
Honestly seeing how wow makes almost every list of top this or that to some degree it should be a competitor, but choosing a winner, regardless of which game, is going to ruffle feathers. If the winner was Far Cry 2, the same thing you in the quote would still be applicable.

LOL, really? Now that you got that out.
As a fan I could careless what the developers want or the insiders who run such sites. What they like to see is the possibility to make more money. What I like to see is a vested interest in offering the best game-play possible. Which I haven't been seeing especially in the MMO field.
If they want to pat themselves on the back over the fact that the masses will still horde to games offering 10 year old game play. They can have at it, I'll just wait until someone understands some of us won't. More and more will join those ranks as time goes on. As quite a few devs have learned in the past year.

Sure it may be the game of the decade runner up to super mario or something but that is just what is is,you cant compare this game with the real mmorpg, it would like comparing packman with ultima online.
MMOs are nothing more than a part-time timesink, satisfying nothing more than the need to be entertained for a while.

WOW as game of the decade? Sure.
As game "world" of the decade? Nah. Brittannia or Norrath, for sure.
If anyone has ever really summed things up, it's this man right here.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

When faced with an issue, you always try to turn the discussion about the poster and not the point.
Ah the white flag of surrender. How sad.
Well, it's the game I've played the most and had the most fun playing in the past 10 years, so yeah.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

WOW just because made millions just like McD's does it mean its a quality game... if you broke down the game you would see it falls short on a LOT of things.
In a comparison of quality
wow = McDonalds
EQ2 = _________
Vanguard = ___________
Warhammer = __________
Well, it's the game I've played the most and had the most fun playing in the past 10 years, so yeah.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
Honestly if I had to pick one game that released this decade I would probably choose Half-life 2.
Mass Effect was good, Oblivion, FO3, GTA4, MGS4 and I know CoD4 was awesome but its something about HL2.
WHen I think back to videogames in 20 years ill remember HL2. KInda like how I remember Super Metroid, SotN and FFVII as most memorable.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

As much as I hate WoW and what WoW has done to MMORPGs, it is the best MMO ever made.
SO FAR!
I haven't given up hope that another good mmo will one day be made.

My pleasure.
wow = McDonalds
EQ2 = Burger King
Vanguard = Dominos
Warhammer = Wendy's
Age of Conan = Jack in the Box
** Double edit: Mine wasn't a comparison of quality, but market shares. And just because McDonalds might not have as high of calorie content as some things, how many people are going to say it tastes better than food from a fine restaurant, or that it's healthier than LOCAL fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat. Come on.

Well, it's the game I've played the most and had the most fun playing in the past 10 years, so yeah.
