Final Fantasy XIV: Most Anticipated Game of 2010

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

The editorial staff here at MMORPG.com has made their decisions, and today we continue to unveil the winners of the 2009 MMORPG.com awards by naming our Most Anticipated MMO of 2010.

In terms of sheer potential, the list for games in 2010 is phenomenal, but in the end we had to make a choice and in the end, we had to go with Final Fantasy XIV. The final Fantasy franchise is one of the most famous and enduring video game IPs ever created. The first Final Fantasy MMO, Final Fantasy XI launched strongly in 2003 and still has one of the healthiest MMO populations of any current game. The single most common complaint about the original game is its outdated graphics and feel. Final Fantasy XIV will change all of that.

Read the Most Anticipated Game of 2010.

Cheers,

Now if the beta just were to come out, sooner rather than later...

Nice choice, and its great to finally have one gaming site that even acknowledges it exists...most others don't even put it on their lists as a viable option, just like they treated FFXI over the years.

This is definitely my most anticipated game for 2010 for certain.

I think FFXIV will be a serious contender for 2010 for mmorpg's players looking for something solid to play.

And like the last FF online the game will deliver on polished and stability and great lore to boost . totally agree with most anticipated game of 2010

Definitely looking forward to it myself.

And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

Probably my most anticipated MMO in the last 5 years.

    Good choice.

Yep I agree. Sooner the better.

I think this was probably a pretty safe choice.  As stated in the article SWTOR probably won't make it for a 2010 release, and as great as guildwars was,  theres not an overly large amount of released information on guild wars2.  I do think that the runner up should have been Guild Wars 2 though instead of SWTOR,  due to the very fact the article stated.

Probably will be the most impressive game of the ones ahead of us. Definitely will have a look. Now if i could find some time to

actually pláy a mmo again, times ahead would be jolly :P

Another Fantasy MMO. I vote for Earthrise instead.

I would have liked to see the secret world, but given the delay and moving their studio and stuff, I can see why they didn't include it in the list for 2010. ;)

FFXIV is my most anticipted game, for sure.

    It is for me too.

Not pure fantasy, but high-fantasy. We'll be seeing some hi-tech stuff there sooner or later.

I thought high fantasy was a term used for very generic fantasy (tolkien style).

ie: dwarves, elves, magic, dragons etc.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

Hmm. I don't really know for sure. What would be the best word to describe fantasy with sci-fi/cyberpunk elements added in?

Can't argue with that. Guess I personally would have chosen STO, it's the fanboi in me.

I have not read all the categories, but this is one they definitely got right.

I am not saying this game will be great, they are trying out some new ideas and losing levels and watering down class play is a bold move.I am waiting impatiently to see their final product.

The reason it is an easy pick for most anticipated is because of Square's track record and incredible creativity.I have very little confidence in other developers. For myself if FFXIV turns out to be a flop,my head will sink very low, these are the guys that i feel can give me the quality and creativity i strive for in games.Square understands the TRUE meaning of a MMORPG,they understand the word "challenge" so the game offers me reason and enjoyment to login.Unlike many others ,i do not login to perform some speed leveling acrobatics,i login to play a game.

If Square can repeat FFXI's quality and effort,i am sure FFXIV will be an amazing game,if not,i may go another year or two with nothing good to play.

I don't think i can debate that, but Square Enix does offer that no?

The difference is that Square unlike everyone else, puts their own theme and creativity into everything.I mean it is hard to change the elven look but they did a good job creating the other race like Taru,Galkan, and changing from the conventional felpurr or cat they introduced their own Mithra.

I think we can maybe tie everything into Tolkein and the original DDO theme, but if everyone just outright copied it all,we would have some pretty boring games and really not needing anymore than 1 or 2 games in total.

CREATIVITY is the keyword. This is what separates games, and makes looking forward to the NEXT game coming out ,so enjoyable. This is why recently people have begun to complain of copying the WOW theme too much, even though it is not WOW's theme to claim it is EQ's,it still shows that people crave creativity.

Great choice, I too have been waiting for this game for years.

  • Hrayr2148Hrayr2148 Member Posts: 649

They definetely got this category right.

My top two mmo's for 2010 are FFXIV and STar Wars.   But, a lot of people are going to be dispointed with SE.  Not because FFXIV isnt' going to be a quality product, but because it does't contain one of the elements you find in every single Western MMO (other than LOTR).... that is.... PVP.

Some people want pve and pvp in a game.  FFXIV will be 99% PvE.  That is wonderful for someone like me who considers FFXI his favorite mmo of all time.   When it was announced that FFXIV was in develoopment, I knew I would be a happy gamer for years and years to come.

SWTOR is mine... Final Fantasy looks ghey.

  • LazzerusLazzerus Member Posts: 99

I totally agree with this choice.  My favorite mmo has been FFXI, I stopped playing a little awhile back, lost my PlayOnline ID, and never got back into FFXI, soI cannot wait to see  what square delivers for FFXIV.

    My opinion matters to everyone...

It's great to see a game which isn't trying to hype itself with trailers and interviews receive such a great award. Great choice!

  • zaylinzaylin Member UncommonPosts: 794

FF XI was my very first MMO, I'm really looking forward to FF 14. FF XI had one of the best communities imo, and an all round great game. Some people complained that it was to grind heavy, but honestly its the player that (for the most part) makes the game a grind. Good to see that FF 14 is getting some props.
