Yeah i stand corrected every piece of crap MMo grindfest to come out of japan is the greatest. Square cant even make a decent single player game why would anyone think a square mmo would be any better but hey i play games for fun and i have been playing mmo for some time and know alot of people who do so the fact i don't know anyone who has any desire to play this says alot to me.
It only says something about the mindset of your friends and you. If you hang out with people who like Warcraft and Blizzard, you're not going to see many who like Final Fantasy.
And to prove you wrong, everyone I know is excited about this game.
If everyone you know is excited about this game it means two things. Everyone you know has a very narrow mindset, and most likely everyone you know lives in the basement of their mom's house and are members of your FFXI clan.
So what does that say about odin who states that no one he knows plays or likes any FF games? I guess that makes him and all his friends narrow-minded? Does this logic work both ways, or only with people who are interested in FFXIV? Do educate us, please.
I'm finding these bitter, sour-grape tinged rants and whine-fests from a few people here about FFXIV being selected rather entertaining. Some people get so bent out of shape when something doesn't go the way they want it to.

- Square is a solid company. They cater to their loyal fans first and foremost, and never let them down. They don't do it big, they do it right.
- FF has one of the longest running histories in commercial [electronic] gaming with more noteworthy installments than even Zelda or Mario, where IP recognition is concerned.
- The IP isn't being liscenced off to an independant studio, and Square's first attempt at an MMO (FFXI) was extremely solid, with a fiercely loyal playerbase of its own. It should also be noted that Square has done what none other since have tried- and that is the merging of computer with console for MMO gaming.

First off nothing but crap has been comming out of square the last few years and they need to let final fantasy die i mean 14 games none of them any good like seriously let it die. As for PVE i love PVE hate PVP but i still would rather not play anything than this game. Point i am trying to make over all is that you have 2 of the biggest sci fi franchises ever both comming out with MMO in 2010 and this crappy FF14 gets most anticipated i seriously dount it. who did they poll a buch of 12yr olds geez. As for popularity who cares 14 friggin games and i dont know anyone who has played any of them or wants to
Wow what a whine-fest.
You're unhappy that a game you don't like was chosen and you're feeling very emo about it. Got it.
As for the last statement about "popularity" and 14 games... and you not knowing anyone who has played or wants to? First of all... There are 14 games - not to mention a number of spin-offs - *because* the franchise is popular and a lot of people *do* play it. See, that's kinda how it works.
As for not knowing anyone who plays... Seriously? So what do they call this little bubble world you live in? Or, do you limit yourself to only associating with people who don't like FF games? Or... maybe you're full of crap and pulled that entire bit out of your ass? Or maybe you thought by making such a strong statement, it would give your post more "oomph" (it didn't)?
I've lived and worked in 6 states and 12 different countries and don't know of a single person or co-worker who plays these games. I have met people in London, Rio de Janiero, Bejing and Copenhagen who play Everquest or WoW, though. If anyone lives in a bubble it's the people who say "all of my friends played at least some of the FF games", not the other way around.
Point i am trying to make over all is that you have 2 of the biggest sci fi franchises ever both comming out with MMO in 2010 and this crappy FF14 gets most anticipated i seriously dount it. who did they poll a buch of 12yr olds geez. Well.
There is just one upcoming game based on a Sci Fi IP and Star Trek is only Sci Fi "light".
Star Wars is NOT Sci Fi, Star Wars is High Fantasy. The fact Star Wars has starships doen't make it Sci Fi...
Every detail about SW saga fits the High Fantasy definition.
You will find lazer swords and starships in a myriad of High Fantasy productions.
Bladerunner is a popular and real Sci Fi IP.
Well, most Final Fantasy "fans" are older players who are playing FF since the "Nes" era, so your argument is a bit weak.

All very valid points, except perhaps the final statement. It would be more correct to say the game will be a 'must watch' for the FF player community. All the statements applied to the previous MMO rendition, and at least in the western markets it went by the wayside, outside of fans of FF, whereas games like WoW and to a lessor extent Ultima Online were able to expand on their existing IP player base.
I have a hard time believing that. ALL of my gamer friends have played at least one FF game and all but of my gamer friends are avid fans of the series. Even my one friend who isn't much of a fan played 1 and 4. I'm from the US and I've played FF 1,4,5,6,7,8,9,X, X-2, XI, XII FFT, other square games include ChronoTrigger and Xenogears and this is pretty much the norm for every gamer I know US and otherwise.
STO once interested me but Cryptic has a habit of Fail in their mmos and STO is shaping up to be more of the same Cryptic mediocrity.
I love RPG's, but FF never appealed to me. First, there's the stupid name. How can you have a Final Fantasy II? Do the developers not know what the word "Final" means in English? If you can't get the title right, this implies there's going to be translation errors throughout. Maybe that's not the case, but it's implied and a very poor marketing decision if they're trying to grab a more sophisticated gaming market. Then there was the graphics, that have seemed to evolve from an anime style to now, what looks like EQ 2.5 with bigger ears. Not appealing.
I feel compelled to respond to this bit, since I guess you've never bothered to research the name of the game - and why would you if you're not interested in it - perfectly understandable. I'll explain as I think it's a pretty cool story, actually, that even a non-fan can appreciate. Here's at least a thumbnail version.
Back in the 80s a wee company called SquareSoft was struggling. They'd put out some games, weren't really meeting with much success and were about to go under. A guy named Hironobu Sakaguchi asked for the chance to make one more game to see if they could turn things around. Appropriately, he named it Final Fantasy - as it might be the final game Square would make. As it happens, the game did extremely well, turned things around for the company, and went on to become a very popular and beloved series, mostly in the East. However, its popularity really took off in the West with Final Fantasy VII, the first 3D game in the series.
The name "Final Fantasy" itself represents more of a "theme" which, in some way, reflect the circumstances surrounding FF1's development. I can't find the reference for a direct quote now, but it was explained basically to mean that in each Final Fantasy game, there's a sort of "goal" or "final fantasy" that's being fulfilled by the cast, or at least certain members of it. Thus, the name was taken from a literal meaning of "this might be our last game ever", and became the basis for a theme on which the storylines for each succeeding one was created. In that context, anyone who's played the series, or any in the series, could certainly think back and identify the "final fantasy" of a given character, etc.
So, the Final Fantasy series isn't one based on sequels (X-2 notwithstanding), but as a stand-alone series of stories all based on that theme.
And there you have it... a few details might be off, but that's mostly the gist of it.
As for the whole thing about there being transation issues if they misuse the word Final... well, apart from being an ignorant ad hominem, I'm sure you can see now that it was also horribly misinformed... and incorrect. The grammar/English in the FF series has been pretty solid. They hire translators to handle that stuff .
As for the bit about appealing to a sophisticated gaming market... you clearly know nothing of FF's influence, not only on gamers, but on game developers and the fantasy RPG genre. Hironobu Sakaguchi is a celebrated designer in the industry, up there with Shigeru Miyamoto. And I'll leave it at that.

Everyone who plays MMO's, because they know that SE is not to be ignored when it comes to this genre.
Your statement about them having a narrow mindset is pretty damn hilarious in itself. Who has the narrow mindset; the guy who doesn't like the game because "it's made by SE" or the guy who is open minded and actually optimistic about playing it? Good luck figuring that out.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
There's obviously a common misconception by FF fans. Not everyone came to computer gaming from the consoles developed and released in the 90's. The vast majority of Ultima Online and Everquest players where people like me, who hadn't played a lot of console games since the Atari 2600 went by the wayside. I love RPG's, but FF never appealed to me. First, there's the stupid name. How can you have a Final Fantasy II? Do the developers not know what the word "Final" means in English? Imagine that you didn't grow up reading Magna comic books and playing on a console, but instead grew up playing Wizardy, Ultima and the SSI games on computers while reading Tolkein, Donaldson and Asmiov. That's how FF*()& is not appealing. It's just not. Now, I understand that I'm not the target market and that you console gamers are, but don't run around saying that FF is the best game ever, when you haven't even defeated Werdna or completed the Quest of the Avatar.
Ignorance is a bliss. It's good to criticize the name when you don't even know where it comes from, and what it means..
Not everyone likes console RPG's, for reasons you stated. BUT not everyone likes PC RPG's, for reasons you stated above. The PC RPG fans are not excited about the game, and the console RPG fans Are excited about the game. Although the irony in this is that the game will be more like Ultima Online and Everquest than it is that of a console RPG, so simply not being excited about the title because it will be on a *console* and that the company behind it is better at making console RPG's is ignorant and silly.

No, the whole MMORPG community. Like you said, the previous game went by the wayside, because it wasn't made like the console RPG's from before. What this means, is that while SE may have done console RPG's in the past, doesn't mean that they're not capable of making games that cater to your PC RPG playstyle as well. The opposite actually, which is why I don't think you shouldn't be excited about this title just because it's made by company X, but because of what it's promising to do to the genre. And what it's promising to do shouldn't be any reason to not be excited about the game, but the opposite, regardless of being a PC RPG fan or console RPG fan.

The point of naming a computer game is to attract potential customers. I've clearly ex[lained why this game's title does the opposite for me. Where did you get lost?

If you let the title or the company making it decide how the game is going to be, then that is quite shallow. Look at the content, not the name.

Why is it everytime you state your opinion in a public forum, and god forbid that opinion is different people insult your and try to tell you how wrong you are. I will not play this game for reason that you people may no agree with but are very valid to me. I do not and have not enjoyed games made by square enix why they are just play childish looking in my opinion. does this game have a loyal fan base shure it does watching paint dry would also have a valid fanbase doesnt mean a damn thing. As for this game being on the console vs PC thing its irrelivant its about the game if its good who cares why i use to play it on.
It's fine as long as you don't act like that opinion is the opinion of everyone else and a fact.
You can say "I don't think this was the right game to be awarded because I prefer STO/SW:TOR/Whatever", without acting like your opinion is the end-all fact of the universe and look down on everyone else's opinion. That's what you did, that's why we started arguing with you. Your opinion is no better than anyone else's, you have right to it, but you don't have right to look down on everyone else.

Lastly to the moron saying star wars is not sci fi WTF are you talking about that really is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.
Well, it seems you are not able to respect anyone here.
Star Wars has all the bounds and details of a High Fantasy creation, it is not Sci Fi.
The clear definition of good and evil, some stereotypical roles are all there.
You can even compare the role of the characters with the role of characters in Tolkien's work.
Star Wars may be a space opera, but from literary style point of view, it has much more connection to H.F. than the moral and social complexity and technological aspects of a true Sci Fi creation.
Just compare SW with Bladerunner and even Star Trek and you will notice the different patterns SW follow.
This is the "dumbest" thing you ever heard because you probably have absolute no knowledge about this subject and you are not able to se beyond appearances.
Edit- Just a side note, some of Final Fantasy games also have StarShips, Lazer Guns and "Technology", but just like Star Wars, they are related to High Fantasy and not Sci Fi.
Just like a fantasy piece with historical details and a "down to earth" approach will not be enough to be categorized as Low Fantasy, not without moral complexity.
Based on your attitude it seems you are very very young, try to respect others and open your mind , a lot of what you are saying shows much more your immature personality than contructive (negative or positive) opinions about those games.
whatever you say dude might want to come down off your high horse there and stop being a hypocrit if i pass my opinion off as fact was not my intention but you are just as guilty. so piss off with you morality
Fine whatever you say of course everything you say is right and everyone else is wrong millions and millions of people would call star wars sci fi but hec you disagree thats all that matters right your shit doesn't stink right just everyone elses right im not very very young i just have no tollerance for arrogant a-holes who think they are so much better than others.
He presented a fine argument which didn't even consist of "I am right and I don't have to explain myself" sentences.
That already makes him better than you, when it comes to arguments at least.

This is a well deserved award. FFxi is one of only a few games who have more subs now then when it launched. Not only that, but its one of the few games that have built a "world" rather than "playrooms" filled with toys.
For a lot of "oldtimers" this is the only game on the horizon daring to offer a more indepth gaming experience.

You will find a lot of people and even professional critics who call Star Wars fantasy.
It is funny when you call me arrogant... after calling me a moron... usually people who need name calling and personal offenses are arrogant... and immature.
Do you have any argument about StarWars definition in the Sci Fi vs Fantasy subject? To tell the truth it can be a interesting discussion... probably not with you...
By your definition a couple of Final Fantasy games and Star Ocean games are Sci Fi games. If they introduce starships in wow, it would be a Sci Fi game then...
Anyway, I am done with you as this subject is off topic here.

Umbral very good argument. Thank you for posting full and coherent sentences, and refraining from of calling someone a "moron" and throwing an immature tantrum, or saying someone is not as "sophisticated" as you for lack of knowledge concerning the difference between High Fantasy and Sci Fi when it comes to SW. I was not aware myself that SW was considered High Fantasy. And so I just didn't jump on the "you're right" bandwagon, I did do a search for further information. Unfortunately other than other opinionated websites (or wikapedia that does not count as "all truth and nothing but the truth") they all stated that SW was considered High Fantasy. I did find the definition of High Fantasy, Low Fantasy, and according to the definition, SW can be considered HF. But that is just from what I read with my own eyes, and my simple opinion created from facts.
Edit: Ok, came across "Space Opera" as Umbral mentioned before, and SW is labeled as such. Though space opera can also be considered part of fantasy as well as scifi.

Hey you might be right for all I know, you just have to explain to me why you think so.

One of the websites' I found stated that High Fantasy was this:
High Fantasy or Epic Fantasy is one of the subgenres of fantasy fiction. It is the largest part of the genre being published today. Epic fantasies are characterized by long involved plots, a secondary world and two basic themes.
Most High Fantasy books have long involved plots. Many of the books are trilogies or longer series. This allows for the development of characters, grand settings and sweeping stories with multiple subplots. This gives a challenge to the reader to do some serious consideration of the themes.
High fantasy usually takes place in a secondary world that involves magic and strange beings. It uses noble characters, archetypes and elevated style. Writers either ignore our world, set the secondary world in some relationship with ours or use a world-within-a-world technique. Stories use a commoner hero that rises to the occasion or a morally ambivalent hero who can't decide between good and evil.
High Fantasy works mostly with two themes. One theme is the struggle for supremecy between good and evil, light and darkness, order and chaos. The other major theme is the quest. A quest is a search for a magical object or person which can save the world. Quests are always toward something; they are a spiritual or religious undertaking.
Don't let the 3 trolls get to you guys, it's clear that this game definitely took this award just by the number of people posting "I agree" outside of the flame fest the few trolls are having.
To the trolls... I'm sorry the FF games are not shallow shooters, I'm sorry they don't have twitch PvP for you, and I'm sorry that they make you read instead of pewpew all the time. The games are better off without the lazy gamer crowd.

that was pretty clever. now lets be honest here it doesn't matter in the least what i say you aren't going to change your opinion like i will not change mine. I will freely admit i know very little about this game. I can only base it based on my experience with SE games which i have not enjoyed in the least. Am i guilty of generalising against SE deffinatly but with my other options im not taking the chance and buying it. The last few i have attempted to play i stopped after less than an hour of playing. They did not suit my gaming tastes. I do 100% disagree with this being the most anticipated game. I can base this on my opinon and the opinion of the gaming community im a menber of. I can with confidence say non of which have any itching to play FF. No i offer my apologie to those i have insulted i do tend to get cranky before my mornings 3rd cup of joe. As to the high fantasy vs Sci fi. I can with no insult intended say that i really don't care what the differewnce is, it really has no validity to what i was saying. maybe if i had said 1of the biggest light sci fi franchises and one of the biggest high fantasy franchises it would have been correct. But it really just takes away from the point i was trying to make that IMO Star Wars and Star Trek have a much larger fanbase than FF.

Based on your attitude it seems you are very very young, try to respect others and open your mind , a lot of what you are saying shows much more your immature personality than contructive (negative or positive) opinions about those games.
...
Ohoo, now that is new information to me. So, XIV is a high-fantasy game after all.
whatever you say dude might want to come down off your high horse there and stop being a hypocrit if i pass my opinion off as fact was not my intention but you are just as guilty. so piss off with you morality
He presented a fine argument which didn't even consist of "I am right and I don't have to explain myself" sentences.
That already makes him better than you, when it comes to arguments at least.
Hm, do you have anything to prove yourself with? As far as I'm aware, I'm not the guilty of doing the same thing.

Anyway, I am done with you as this subject is off topic here.
...
Hm, do you have anything to prove yourself with? As far as I'm aware, I'm not the guilty of doing the same thing.
of course your not guilty of doing the same thing your prfect arent ya. i am now done talking to the two wall people who cant see past their own arrogance. good day have a nice life. WTF is high fantasy anyways sheesh by his argument there is no such thing as sci fi everything is high fantasy as every movie ever made fits his criteria.
You shouldn't become so hostile if someone starts arguing with you in the internet. That is quite childish; maybe SE games are perfect match for you after all!

Hey you might be right for all I know, you just have to explain to me why you think so.

that was pretty clever. now lets be honest here it doesn't matter in the least what i say you aren't going to change your opinion like i will not change mine.
