Well I have not played any F2P play for 2 reasons. They don't usually interest me and I don;t like the idea of paying to be better than someone else. I like your signature, especially the last bit about achieving. Thats the only reason to play for me. Btw I want to make it clear that I don't support the MT/paid services (because I don't use them) but i doesn't make me want to quit the game. I did look at the numbers but It doesn't tell you how funds are distributed. So there is no way of knowing if and where they are lacking in revenue. I don't think NCsoft is struggling but its obvious they had plans to do this from the start.
Yeah, i agree, I also think now they planned to do this from the start, which makes it doubly offensive to me tbh...
I would never have purchased the game or paid for a sub if I had thought they would go down the MT route.
I seen you post on the FFXIV page you planning on playing that>?
yeah I will depending on how they handle their MT... I know they have talked about it a little, but between minimal info and bad translations there is a lot open to intepretation tbh.
I like the look of the core play systems from the little we know tho
I am not sure why people are upset, concerned, or confused. Back when NCSoft was developing AION, they showed that they were looking at different business models. The game was designed from the ground up to support microtransactions with little or no changes. They started this game in China, and made microtransactions part of the business model as soon as it was commercialized. There were many people (such as myself) who pointed all of this out, and stated that this was to be how it would work in the west as well... only to get scoffed. Players decryied that this would never happen in the EU/US. It walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck... OMG.... it is a duck!!!! Who would have guessed?
P.S. I would have thought that someone would notice that they shut down Tabula Rasa... not because it wasnt making money (it was making a tidy profit), but rather because it wasnt making ENOUGH money, and they wanted to pull resources off, to put them on more profitable projects... aka AION.
Well, i never had that debate with you, or scoffed at you... I didnt have anything to do with NCS before this (except GW briefly, and CoH at launch), and I didnt follow to development of the game. I only started it tbh because my GF liked the look of it.
As a MT hater I just trusted that a corporation would stick with the rev model it had at launch (unless it struggled), or that any change would be communicated in enough time to catch me before I resubbed.
Obviously neither happened.
Yeah, it is a duck, but I paid for a goose.
You have a good point... you didnt know what you were getting into. That is clearly your fault...
I was going to sympathize with you, because it seems silly to have to do 'due dilligance' on a MMORP. Then I remembered that this is a P2P game... and that the whole purpose of a P2P business model, is to get peoples money before they get to see the product.
Yea, it may be sad that someone paid good money for a bridge in brooklyn, but it is a scam that has been ongoing for a few hundred years... so it really is their fault for falling for it.

eh what?
I am at fault for not scouring every forum, for every post, to know everything about the dev's history before I purchased the game, so I would know that the dev might be lying to me?
I wondered when is Ncsoft going to sell the crafter's pack? Since certain flux etc are not a 100% drop rate so I think Ncsoft might introduce the item shop sooner or later, in the meantime, it is possible to reduce the goldsellers business.
Besides, every company would worried about one day if they losing a lot of subscribers, therefore, MT could be the only way to keep thier game running without lag.
You can't stop the game company finding the way to making money, and it could be a trend in the future or even booming.

Aion would still have the vast bulk of quitters if it had delivered on fixes, bot control, content boosts, account security, events, and CS.
In other words, if it had done it's job well and delivered a quality product.
*IF* they need to use MT now to survive (which i simply don't buy) it's purely because of a situation they created by how they have handled the game in the West, so it gets little sympathy from me.
*IF* a formerly sub only game needs to adopt MT in order to just survive in the first 4-5 months then thats an open admission in my eyes that the game is just a big assed fail.
Aion had a great start in the West, it sold over 1,000,000 boxes in the first week I belive, but if your telling me now that NCS have suceeded in killing it here so badly that it's now financially struggling, then I am even more glad I cancelled.
(this is very long, sorry - everyone else should save themselves now!) (also I seem to suddenly be having problems with the font size on this site).
Like I say, and I can only repeat, I am not anti-corporation in general. Only when they act unfairly or unreasonably in my eyes.
There is no 'automatic' reaction from me to it at all.
That's more of "people in general". I am not saying you are doing that.
Look, I guess we are never gonna agree on this... You see it from the perspective of the shareholder only, and I see it from the view of the customer, and they rarely want the same things.
I do believe in a iddle ground though. I do believe that subs offer the shareholder a profit while being fair and honest to the customer.
You are very correct in many ways. The customer and shareholder rarely want the same things. I do see it from perspective from the shareholder because in the end I am a shareholder. Not in NC but in other companies. And you are too most likely. Many people are or will be. Of course we both are customers and that is why in the end I vote with myy dollars. It's why I buy locally if I can help it over globally. It's why I buy prodcuts that don't have certain things in them or that are from companies that do things that I find unethical. At least to a reasonable amount, I'm not perfect.
How can the removal of seasonal events, to be replaced by purchased seasonal packs of mostly recycled content for £5.99 NOT be detrimental to the game?
I don't see it that way. I see it as the company wasn't prepared for a seaosonal event and let its customers down (bad) but they threw some seasonal stuff in their cash shop for those who were interested in that sort of thing. Good for those who like that type of thing, bad for those who feel burned that the company can't get its act together for an event as they will feel slapped in the face for this sort of thing.
To me the act of not being able to put together a seasonal event is to the detriment of the game. Cash shop to me is just fluff and for me has nothing to do with the game play in general.
No, you actually said it is fine as long as it is in 'the scope of the law.
The law isnt ethics, and ethics isnt law. It isnt the same thing.
good point and you are right, they can be different. I say "within the scope of the law" because I do think that businesses (and people in general) should always work from within the idea of law. However I am a bit of an idealist in that I believe the laws should reflect the ethics of a society and if the laws don't reflect those ethics then they should be changed. But that's my way of just saying that I just expect companies to work within the society they are in in accordance to the laws and ethics of that society.
It's not always like that of course and I do think that companies need regulation as we have seen that in many cases they will try to get away with as much as possible.
Well, look...
I bought a game, and paid the sub for 4 months under the understanding (as it was at launch) that it was a non MT game. That was how it was presented to me. I renewed my sub because, amongst other things, the events were getting better and it looked like NCS was starting to actually care.
They then strip those events out and introduced MT to replace them, without notification.
As a paid subber, they reduced the value of my sub without communication or explanation. They changed the service offered midway through my sub.
To me, and a lot of others from the responses I personally saw on the offical boards and comments under the announcement, thats unethical trading.
Once *again*, noone is arguing against paid services (I seem to have to say this every post). I also have stated that this issue has nothing to do with whether MT is 'fluff' or not.
I think that is where the issue is. They did say through developement that they were going to look at ways to incorporate services. But in the end I still don't see it as a rmt game in the flavor of most rmt games. For example, in WoW you can buy pets. Does that make it an rmt game? I would say that a good many game companies will be incorporating similiar things. I don't think that makes them rmt games.
As I said, I don't think they stripped out the events, I think they failed at providing an event. They just threw some holiday items for players to buy. However, we did get a free outfit of some such thing (which I promptly destroyed). I look at this as NC not having their act together and in this case not seeing the P.R. issues that they would get from offering things for sale at what should have been event time.
And I get you are not arguing against paid services but you and others who say the same thing are taking your acceptance of paid services to new and strange places! If you are not against the services and your main beef is that you think they changed things so now there are services (such as they are) then I don't see what the deal is. That's like saying you like whipped cream, you ordering a small cake that didn't advertise whip cream on the side and when it comes with whipped cream on the side you are unhappy. Now, if you hated whipped cream the yeah, I could see your issue.
As far as whether or not I've ever used a cash shop, well "yes" I have. In EQ 2 they offer cosmetic armor. I can't stand their armor art designs so I plunked down the $10 dollars so I wouldn't have to look at myself. And I seem to remember buying something in archlord to help with porting back or some such thing.
I am not against cash shops or the inclusion of any cash shops in games i play, even already established p2p games as long as the items are cosmetic or fluff. So if LOTRO were to add a cash shop for better looking armor/weapon skins they would definitely make money from me. in the example we are talking about, if they didn't give us an event but gave us a "Sir Hugs A-Lot" doll in the cash shop I wouldn't care. Though they would never do that because Turbine is a better company and tries to look out for their customers.
From what I understand, NC is made up of Artists and then "everyone else". NC makes good games in my opinion but in no way are they a great company. As I always will say they come off as an arrogant company. Or perhaps we can add clueless to that.

I tended to believe that the reason the drops in Aion sucks badly just because Ncsoft is deployed for the future. If the population still high in the near future, it means people like this game, so they will glad to see Ncsoft introduce Crafter's Pack in the game.
Evern since the goldsellers and the main botters is being banned, the materials is greatly in shortage. For example, major elemental stone, the drop rate is so low, but this is very basic crafting material for nearly every profession.
For alechemy crafter, lets say a level 45 Orb, you need to use 65 major catalyst, 40 major wisdom stone, 15 major power crystal. Each wisdom stone need 2 major elemental stone, and power crystal needs 4 major elemental stone. 6x Permium weapon flux.
40 Major Wisdom stone = 80 major elemental stones
15 major crystal = 60 major elemental stones
It will take you least 20 hours to grind these elemental stone and maybe even longer, plus the 6 weapon flux. You will need 2 days just to craft a lv45 Orb. If you want to crit the Orb, you may need to prepare for least 6 times of these materials.
Lets say you were so lucky and crit the Proof Orb at 6th try for a Noble Proof Orb. So you want to do Worthy Noble Proof Orb, for whatever reason, to use by yourself or to give it to NPC to be able for expert crafter.
The worthy noble proof orb is also a crit from Worthy Proof Orb, it means you may need several of Noble Proof Orb to try your luck. And lets say you were so lucky to crit it on 6th try.
It means you need to multiple the number, 6 tries x 6 noble orb = 6 x 140 major elemental stone = 840 stones then x 6 = 5,040 major elemental stone.
6 tries x 6 noble orb = 6 x 6 weapon flux x 6 = 216 premium weapon flux
Just now the price in auction house:
1 Major elemental stone = 2,500 - 4000
1 Premium weapon flux = 100,000 - 120,000
Worthy Premium weapon flux = 300,000
It is not only need few millions Kinah but the time spend on this is just rediculous and wasting time.
So I believed Ncsoft will setup a Item Shop in the future, otherwise, there will be an expansion pack to make such thing obsolete. However, this game gonna be worthyless if you invest your time on it.
PS. How many major elemental stone in auction house now?
On my server Kalil (EU), you could find total around 30 pieces.

I dont' know, that just sounds like conspiracy theory talk.
As far as the major elemental stones, you can get tons of them killing undead in Brusthonin on Asmo side. I usually give about 30 to 50 each session and 2 days ago I gave 81 to our crafter.
They aren't hard to get. edit: just finished about an hour's bit of time, maybe hour and 10 minutes and already have 20.

I feel the distinction between 'services' amd cash shop MT is clear and distinct, and hasnt changed since I have started talking about it. There is honestly no blurred line or bending of definitions. In game rewards in a cash shop have never been considered services, while account transfers have. I feel I have been very clear and see nothing new or strange in it. well, yeah, I have to agree.
The seasonal MT packs are obviously water testers to try out market tolerance for this in Aion in the West. They are obviously going to ramp this side of the business up, and that was a major part in why I walked.
Nothing is going to get better in this game, not as long as they can make an extra dollar out of it being worse.

I don't think it is conspiracy but it looks like business plan in making more money.
When Plastic Surgery NPC already exist at day 1, there is no information about it, and now Ncsoft charged money for this.
If Ncsoft never deployed the Plastic Surgery NPC in the game and introduce a paid service to player later then it will never be a conspiracy. Following the same path like Plastic Surgery, it is reasonable doubt that Ncsoft may do it again on other stuffs, such as drop rate to offer player a crafter's package including various stuffs for one craft, or seeling scroll to increase your critical success.
Besides, Aion is basically based on F2P scheme, so it is highly probability that Ncsoft will set up a item shop in the future.

I highly doubt that they are going to cut down on crafting drops so that they can sell crafting kits.
It's just the wrong type of game for that. I could see this in other games but dollars to donuts not Aion. Oh, I have no doubt you will see more holiday type things, pets, fluff items, etc. But I dont' believe we will see crafting kits or actual gear.
@ Vesavius, not ignoring your post but the only thing I've found by the devs regarding rmt choices is their announcement that they were creating NC Coin for Exteel and would include it in upcoming offerings as well. However, in this particular article they don't mention "which" upcoming games. Of course we know they haven't opted to use it as such in Aion.
Oh, and to answer your question, I don't believe in giving xp items for sale for cash though I am fully aware that cash shop games do this. I think Sony added it to EQ 2 as well.

Basically, I think they will keep pushing it until we say no. The only thing I ever read, which I just can't seem to find, was an interview that when asked the interviewee said that they didn't know if all future games would have NC coin but they would look into what made sense for the game/region. That sparked some debate on Aionsource forums about the future of Aion and NC coin.
My thought is that the actual product "NC Coin" was deemed a bit too controversial or just "not the right fit" for Aion so instead of implementing it they just added the account services which included the holiday items.
but wait... I did find something... This was before the game was launched.
Why did you decide to go for the subscription-based model for Aion here in the West, when you have other successful games, like Guild Wars and Dragonica, which are free to play?
NCsoft specialises in MMOGs, and we realise that there isn't just one type of MMO player out there. Different players play different types of MMO experiences and as such, we offer a variety of ways to experience our games.
Will there be any added extras we can pay for with microtransactions, such as additional customisations, in-game pets, and so on?
We haven't announced anything regarding microtransactions, but stay tuned. We are going to focus on paid services at launch.

OP, are you sure you are not a troll? I mean I know you say you aren't and I really want to believe you, but some of the stuff you stated are a little on the half fact area. Plus you also recommended others to not touch the game, which if you really want to avoid sounding like a troll, you should avoid at all cost.
I know not everyone types carefully online, but maybe should have put a bit more thought into your closure since you came across like a troll even if you did not mean it at all. I could be wrong, and if I am then I apologize.
Why is the MT such a bother? I thought it was mostly useless items, unless I suppose some might really care about collecting these things. I guess a completionist would itch very badly over these things, but not sure most players would.
Also, a gender change is more expensive is most likely because it also include a total restyle, but I am not so sure about if they include renaming since I have never done it myself. However, changing gender more or less need you to change your appearance lest you look like a freakshow if they only change your gender.
Oh well, either way. Since you are done with the game, then it really doesn't matter anymore anyways.

If your the kind of person that defines a 'troll' by simply posting to incite a flame war with no other end, then no I am not. I have been pretty polite all the way through this thread and have had some decent conversation without hate... I don't consider myself a troll, no. Why is the MT such a bother? I have explained several times in this thread why I consider it to be such a bother.

thats a good find Sov, thanks for looking for it.
I guess it really only reinforces my personal choice to cancel though. This really isnt a company I, or anyone else that dislikes MT in their games, should want to support.
the lack of content and linear 1 path prgression in general
No lack of content, but the 1 path progression is a true. It's something I hope they address in the future.
the lamest events I have ever seen in a mmo
Many MMOs don't even bother with them. They're simply fluff, so nothing really to worry about here.
the extremely weak ingame protection vs bots, sellers, and hack apps
The players demanded they remove what little protection they had (Gameguard). They did, and though it likely would have made very little difference if they left it in, it's still a case of reaping what we sow.
the lack of GMs and poor CS in general
The one fully valid complaint in this list. Though the videos of GMs fireballing goldsellers in Sanctum is amusing...
the official forums being so broken and buggy that most won't even use them
Now you're just reaching for stuff to complain about. There's nothing wrong with the main forum, and they're actually far more civil than most MMO forums, which came as quite a suprise.
the core play systems (forts, drops, XP, crafting etc) being still in a beta state being tested and tweaked
This is true for ALL mmorpgs. MMOs are in a constant state of change - take a look at the changes coming to WoW with their next expansion, or the changes LotRO has made to their own systems.
NCS moving at a mind numbingly glacial speed on everything
They've posted several bug fixes and minor tweaks. The last major content patch had been pushed through right before the game went live in NA, so it's not surprising that we haven't seen one yet. If we haven't seen one in 2-3 months, however, this will then be a valid complaint.

I have been pretty polite all the way through this thread and have had some decent conversation without hate... I don't consider myself a troll, no. Why is the MT such a bother? I have explained several times in this thread why I consider it to be such a bother.
I really don't like when people edit my stuff text when using quotes, especially when the second part happen to explain why I ask a question. I draw the line there usually, since it means people are not willing to discuss something in its entirety.
Yes, you been polite, but so have I, well in a confused manner at least, since the opening was full of your fraustrations it was hard to sort through whether you are being obective or ranting about the MT issue.
Basically all I really want to say was, I know you are most likely not a troll (I don't even like the term) however, it is a very troll like behavior to tell others not touch the game. I mean I can't possibly know what people think about gaming to tell others to not touch it, since I could be doing someone a great injustice if they happen to like the game but don't care about the MT.
I might came across as rather rude in my previous post, but believe me, the question is asked out of curiosity only.
P.S Again, don't cut my quotes at least not in mid sentence..... Whether you care about MT or not is none of my business, but I did ask with a proper additional parameter for my questions that your opening post did not quite answer for me. Hence the question.

whoa, easy tiger.. no need to be hostile. I didnt edit anything to harm what you were saying. No need to take offense at it.
Saying that though I do reserve the right to 1) warn others that may feel like me to not play a game based on specific issues, such as MT and the way NCS operate. If they like MT or love NCS they will prolly ignore me anyhow in all honesty... and, 2) to edit as I see fit in my replies.
As for the OP, well.. I was a day 1 player of Aion, and I renewd my sub a few times because I bascially like the feel of the game and the world and there is potentiolly a lot in it worth playing for with the right development. I saw a lot of potentiol in the game that could be realised with time and love by the devs. It was the way NCS consistently handled the game, badly letting it down imo, that gradually wore my support for the title down over time and eventually (with the stealth introduction of MT) killed it.
So am I objective? yeah, I think so... I have no agenda in what I am saying, except the obvious hate of MT and what it brings to the game. I have no need or desire to see Aion burn for the sake of it.
the lack of content and linear 1 path prgression in general
No lack of content, but the 1 path progression is a true. It's something I hope they address in the future. Well, you know.. I watched the Vision trailer and saw housing, mounts, zones with varied environments (swimming underwater), and I thought to myself... yeah, thats the content that Aion is missing. Thats what something like EQ2 *launched* with. Thats the kind of stuff that elevates a MMORPG to AAA status for me. When there is *just* enough quests for 1 run through (which many even debate), there is a lack of content imo.
the lamest events I have ever seen in a mmo
Many MMOs don't even bother with them. They're simply fluff, so nothing really to worry about here. 'Fluff' is important to a MMORPG. it is the meat on the bones and a large part of what makes these games special. Events in particular help create a world, rather then just a game, and bring people together. Fluff is a large part of the content you buy when you purchase any MMORPG. Never underestimate 'fluff' and the role it plays in these games.
the extremely weak ingame protection vs bots, sellers, and hack apps
The players demanded they remove what little protection they had (Gameguard). They did, and though it likely would have made very little difference if they left it in, it's still a case of reaping what we sow. Yes, they removed gameguard in the 11th hour, claiming it caused problems with the game. The fact remains that, A) they made an extremely poor choice of protection in the first (especially for an experienced dev), and went live in a game they *knew* would be a gold seller/ bot magnet with zero protection. In a PvP (vE) game no less. They then took 4 months to get to an acceptable level of control over the situation, by which time ofc the damage was done. Please... If you mean what you seem to, you cannot honestly blame the customer that it took them 4 months to sort this problem out, even if we accept they have or ever will sorted it out? Or do you mean that players buy the gold, so it's players fault? Well, I didnt ever buy gold, so either way... I disagree.
the lack of GMs and poor CS in general
The one fully valid complaint in this list. Though the videos of GMs fireballing goldsellers in Sanctum is amusing... No, it's the only complaint *you* consider fully valid. Theres a difference.
the official forums being so broken and buggy that most won't even use them
Now you're just reaching for stuff to complain about. There's nothing wrong with the main forum, and they're actually far more civil than most MMO forums, which came as quite a suprise. No, I am not talking about civility... You have missed my point. I am saying they are buggy and broken, which even NCS themelves has acknowledged.
the core play systems (forts, drops, XP, crafting etc) being still in a beta state being tested and tweaked
This is true for ALL mmorpgs. MMOs are in a constant state of change - take a look at the changes coming to WoW with their next expansion, or the changes LotRO has made to their own systems. True, it is a ongoing process in most MMORPGs, but Aion's issues are beyond the norm imo. Many core systems were launched broken (forts for example) or terribly balanced (crafting) and they have been using live to beta test them and (maybe) fix them. Still, no rush to fix the game... have a few double XP weekends instead and shhh plz.
'several bug fixes and minor tweaks'.... in close to 5 months? You have actually proved my point for me.
Comments
Yeah, i agree, I also think now they planned to do this from the start, which makes it doubly offensive to me tbh...
I would never have purchased the game or paid for a sub if I had thought they would go down the MT route.
I seen you post on the FFXIV page you planning on playing that>?
yeah I will depending on how they handle their MT... I know they have talked about it a little, but between minimal info and bad translations there is a lot open to intepretation tbh.
I like the look of the core play systems from the little we know tho

Is this really what you are saying?

They aren't hard to get. edit: just finished about an hour's bit of time, maybe hour and 10 minutes and already have 20.

well, yeah, I have to agree.

Well if you have never played an NCSoft game all those things they sell you can buy at the NCSoft account thing would irritate me as well.
Take City of Games, Tabula Rasa, NCSoft does it in those and did in TR before closing it.
So no news flash in them doing it here. Its just what they do period
This was before the game was launched.
http://www.incgamers.com/Interviews/206/aion-associate-producer-interview/2
Why did you decide to go for the subscription-based model for Aion here in the West, when you have other successful games, like Guild Wars and Dragonica, which are free to play?
NCsoft specialises in MMOGs, and we realise that there isn't just one type of MMO player out there. Different players play different types of MMO experiences and as such, we offer a variety of ways to experience our games.
Will there be any added extras we can pay for with microtransactions, such as additional customisations, in-game pets, and so on?
We haven't announced anything regarding microtransactions, but stay tuned. We are going to focus on paid services at launch.

Since you are done with the game, then it really doesn't matter anymore anyways.
thats a good find Sov, thanks for looking for it.
I guess it really only reinforces my personal choice to cancel though. This really isnt a company I, or anyone else that dislikes MT in their games, should want to support.
I really don't like when people edit my stuff text when using quotes, especially when the second part happen to explain why I ask a question. I draw the line there usually, since it means people are not willing to discuss something in its entirety.

P.S Again, don't cut my quotes at least not in mid sentence..... Whether you care about MT or not is none of my business, but I did ask with a proper additional parameter for my questions that your opening post did not quite answer for me. Hence the question.
