I kind of like pvp in my games because then it has the feeling of competition when you want it. Otherwise its just progressing through dungeons with groups and crafting. It just doesn't seem like it could hold me over for that long, the more options on things to do the better. Pvp is a good option to have.
I play PVE I guess 80% of the time but enjoy PVP sometimes for something different. Im one of the few that like the BG type PVP option for the PVP quick fix.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Yes, I would play a %100 PvE MMO if the combat was engaging enough where success and failure depended on a strong mastery over my character and his or her abilities, which the majority of pvp does in MMOs with pvp (unless the pvp in that game sucks or was unbalanced).
However, if PvE only consisted of everybody being able to accomplish the biggest boss, or dungeon, or raid by simply clicking 4 buttons(aka easymode content) - which ANYBODY can do, then I would not play.
And please give the reasons for your answers. Personally PVP has never been my cup of tea. It's not that i never tried, i just dont feel any sense of accomplishement fighting others peoples for what really ? Bragging rights ? There is already TONS of pvp game out there, mostly shooters, why does every MMO that comes out MUST have some sort of PVP in it ? Do you think we could have a succesful MMO without the PVP aspect ?
Because its part of the accepted norm of the genre. I've played EVE and enjoyed it. But what I hate about the framing of the question is that EVE also allows for the lack of it as well; you could spend years and never do PvP/vE on EVE as an example. But I would go out on a limb and given the success of WoW, most companies are compelled to maintain this model because it has worked so well for one company. That may not be what most ppl like to hear (and yes I've played WoW but am more likely to be called an EVE fanboy) but its a truth.
In news they say that the success of a story in the media hinges on the "not too far out of reach" meaning you want to be the first to break the news but not go so far off base where when more info gets released, your prior statements end up making you look like either a liar or a clueless twit (remember the "Dewey Triumphs Over Truman" headline the Tribune published for you history buffs). So for the time being I'd say we can expect it more often but it'll take a long time before company executives say "lets try something new" or enough time passes where new ideas haven't shown the financial success they were looking for and are forced to look at the picture and be experimental.
PvP/vE is the norm right now and unless something changes or something causes it to backfire in WoW, ppl will emulate this style of gameplay into their game. And work off it.
Yes. PvP has it's place but more like a fun mini-game for me. Otherwise I consider PvP a poor substitute for spending time and resources to develope PVE content.
And keep the microtransaction cash shop gagged, bound and tied up in the basement where it belongs. F2P microtransaction games are the worst thing to happen to the MMO industry since WoW was released.
I have played CoH for awhile before the Villains expansion (had an open account with that game for 4 years + starting from day 1).
And I played LOTR for a few months after release (Monster play wasn't a factor when I played).
However, I won't play another PvE-only MMO unless the content is about 3 steps beyond what we have now.
Challenge - fighting robots/scripts isn't my idea of a challenge and organizing/herding raids isn't my idea of fun. Quests can be entertaining but not once you run through them and running through the good ones once or twice is really a very short part of most gaming lifecycles.
Variety - there's always going to be something unexpected in PVP, whether it's adds, unusual skill (or lack thereof) or unusual items.
Validation - I have played single player games and pve games and let the games lull me into thinking that I was good at them without being tested against or in the presence of other players. I got much better very quickly once I found out I was wrong but I no longer trust the game to tell me anything about how "well" I'm doing.
There are other reasons and other things that I would like from PVP in MMOs but no game is currently providing them to any degree of satisfaction so I'll leave them out of this list.
Pvp and PvE are just different playstyles, a game hardly needs both to be good, pure pvp games like Planetside have done very well, likewise pure PvE games like FFXI have also been very successful.
Sure I would but in the end it will be less time spent playing the game that only has pve or as a matter of fact that is only pvp. I will pass on open gank pvp though to many idiots that destroy the game by driving the player base away and kills the game.
An MMO that is purely based on PvE and without any form of PvP would be horrible and would be represent another assualt on the quality of the game industry. It would be my hope that this type of game never comes out. Would I play it? If I had to I would play it just to grief people in whatever way possible within the game. I would actively work to shut that game down.
Yes I would that's why I pre ordered FFXIV I don't have any interest in pvp in an mmo unless it's some sort of arena or whatever.
When I'm playing I don't want these griefers to ruin my time there's games like mount & blade were I pvp cause to me there's more skill involved there then in any mmo.
Ps. lol at above message would like to see you do that and get your @ss raped.

One of the best aspects of pve only mmos is being able to avoid people like Eyelids here.
RAWR!!! EYELIDS SMASH CAREBARES, ME TOUGH, ME ANGRY AT PVE'ERS!!!
lol, you're a trip man, let me guess you play AoC on Tyranny don't you?
It's hardly suprising is it? The massive majority of the mmo consumer base is casual orientated and content with cash shops, Cryptic OMG's and P2W games.
Besides everyone who has an inkling of a fancy for some competitive pvp on a multiplayer game must be an awful awful person.

Wouldn't you do the exact same thing if it was PvP?
Trying to grief people 24/7 and eventually the game gets shut down because most players left because of your 24/7 griefing.
Can't you just start a fight at your local pub like the rest of you lot do, so no need to bring it into the virtual world.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
The only thing which has me scratching my head at PvPers is why they even bother with MMO's? FPSers are sooooo much better at PvP than MMO's. At least there's a game with FPSers... what do MMO PvPers do? Jump around screaming 'LOOSER!' because they managed to hit the '4' key 0.000001 of a second before the other guy did?
Oh, my bad, they just bitch and complain about OP toon sets. Oh, and macros!
I would play it, provided the content was up to par; worst thing that can happen is if it end ups like CoH/V, you get to 50 and.. nothin', best you can do is run the same missions you've run or start an alt.
There needs to be adequate content to keep you advancing/having something to do once you cap out on levels.
Hell I actually prefer this type of game; Most of the time PVP in MMO's (specially all-pvp MMOs) is kiddies sitting out ganking people at spawn points/otherwise harassing people looking for some cheap adrenaline rush; It degrades the game to the point it's no longer fun to play -- EVE for instance, has one of the harshest death penalties of any game; and harassment is a -constant- problem there; Recently a guy I know was in a event, hulkageddon or something, wherein idiots in his guild bought cheap ships, went to high security sectors (The closest thing to a 'no-pvp' zone, has security forces that come around if you attack someone to prevent ganking) and kamikaze'd into huge, expensive frigates carrying huge amounts of cargo, they ended up destroying a couple hundred loaded down with cargo.
So they, using a basic in-game mechanic, and a littlie idiocy ruined several weeks of work for several HUNDRED people in a relatively safe zone... and that is why all-pvp MMO's fail, idiots who harass people, preventing them from playing the game, even if there is no reward in it for them.
TBH the only games i've found with a good pvp set up are WAR and daoc, perfect balance of pvp and pve, you want to pve? there are areas for that, plenty of content, want to pvp? enter the frontiers/war zones, duel it out at keeps and BO's -- something for everyone, while keeping the idiocy and ganking in designated areas.

Most pvpers play fps games as well, I didn't realise that it was against the law for us to play across multiple genres.
What do mmo pvers do? Do a raid and um do the same raid again, and again and again. 'OMG, I totally wtfpwnd that npc dude, I knew exactly what he was going to do and when he was going to do it because i've done this over 9000 times before but woot!' See how that works?
It's funny, you get the odd overtly aggressive pvper who flames all pvers and likes griefing, but on the whole so far from what i've seen in many years of gaming and in the microcosm that is this thread, its the pvers who are the ones flaming and name calling.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."

Further proof of why some folks don't want anything to do with PvP...Thanks for making the point an easy one...
I actually have nothing against PvP content...I just prefer that PvP centric players be given their own Servers to take out their angst on each other...That's all...
81% out of almost 700 votes. To say opinions like the one above are in the minority is a bit of an understatement. This Poll is further proof that regardless of what the hardcore PvP community would have you believe, Player vs Player Combat is no where near as important as they think it is overall in the industry...It's not unimportant either...But I'm not certain PvP is even as important as say Crafting overall...PvP is a part of the total picture of an MMO, but in comparison to the necessity for good solid PvE content, it's pretty far behind...And plenty of folks, I mean an absolute TON of gamers, could live with zero PvP content in an MMO and never complain one bit...
i loathe pvp, I find it too much a haven for immature brats out to prove their lack of manhood by ganking for the sheer joy of ruining people's online play.
Organized pvp is great, guild vs guild, true faction vs faction, etc. but open world open pvp is pure bullshit.
if it's a choice of pure pve or open world gankfest pvp I'll take pve everytime.
and ever notice the pvp based games die pretty quickly? :P
Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed. Current mmo's grouping: tinder. swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.
