You may want to make sure that the people you are calling immature are actually associated with the game in question, prior to pitching that proverbial stone. As it stands you have made a blanket generalization that is not indicative of how most players of the game actually behave.

If I am on the fence about a PvP game, which one do you think I'd try first? The one that didn't charge me anything, just because it is easier. Thats why charging is bad.
And honestly, you all must not think. DF is free for all pvp, how in gods name are rmt going to farm in it? The only reason rmt can farm at all is because harvesting areas are "safe" with no way to stop them. You wont see RMT in darkfall because the playerbase is all of 7k people, and RMT wont be able to harvest safely. That can't be a concern.

Oh I'm sure 85% of the haters don't play and have never played...they are called trolls for a reason.I don't hate Darkfall because I have never tried it to care one way or another.I may not like the way Tasos conducts himself and the way DF fans defend him but that's about all the negative energy I can expend toward the game.
Now from what I've read in articles,DF seems to be one of the rare games actually improving since launch...given it's reported launch state it did have a lot of room for improvement but we've seen games with jsut as bad a launch only improve in stability and nothing else in a similar time frame. So Aventurine despite being a PR nightmare has actually been putting lots of work into the game since launch.
But the people I am referring to are the ones on this and other forums that come and defend the company and the game with insults thrown at anyone, not just the obvious trolls, with anything in the slightest bit negative about said game and company. These are obviously players and there are enough of them to indicate a intolerant, unfriendly and immature palyer base IMO.

As I figured, so many people on here are complaining and moaning about the $1 charge.
NEWSFLASH PEOPLE: It's obvious that Aventurine is doing this to VALIDATE the credit card. With other free trials, you could put a fake credit card number that is generated for the trial itself. This allows the ability to hack/exploit on the trial account with NO reprecussion.
By having the credit card validated through a $1 charge, Aventurine will be able to ban the accounts of the players that abuse any mechanics AND probably ban the main account too since the billing/name information would be the same.
Basically, Aventurine is offering a 7 day $1 trial for those with any interest in the game on the fence about spending the full price for it. At the same time, they are protecting their CURRENT playerbase from gold sellers, exploiters, and hackers.
All you people bitching about $1 that was implemented to PROTECT THE CURRENT PLAYERBASE can go to hell, we don't need you in Agon anyway. To all you others who aren't complaining nit-pickers, I hope you enjoy your time in game.

Don't you find it odd that most people on here that actually play the game think the community is one of the best they've been in?
I know that in the 1 year I've been playing Darkfall, that the community is one of the best I've ever played with, since probably Ultima Online (yes I've been playing MMOs for a long time). So try it out and see what the community is about first before you judge the entire community on a few forum posters....

It is far too easy for some to use any generalizations they can get their hands on.
For someone who has "never tried it to care one way or another", you certainly seem to have been following this game with some sort of vested interest

Eve has 14 days trial but ships you can use is limited (most boring one is you cant use haulers =trucks to carry stuff ),skill you can train is limited ,has isk (game currency) seller spamming and forum is under attack by isk sellers for sometime .You can only post to new player section on forum and need 3 days to post there iirc .You cant use a trial with another account on same computer because it was abused by players .Dont forget trial player amount limit on server simultaneously .
You are looking only from one point ,only RMT .What about free scouts in FFA pvp game ,or resource gathering bots ?There are more than RMT i think.
I am still interested in how Darkfall develops, but I'll wait for a free trial. With all of the "unlimited" trials and "free" to play games in existance now, it's a little strange to me that they would charge for a taste. I hope it works out for them. I loved Shadowbane and DAoC, so I cheer for any PvP/RvR based games out there.
Why charge 1 dollar? to keep gold spammers away? Doesn't make much sense. I usually run a trial five or six times with multiple races and playstyles before i decide on the account i will play. I would hate to pay for each trial attempt.
It makes perfect sense. Just because you abuse trial systems doesn't change anything.
How am i abusing anything? In a sandbox you can play a game multiple ways with the option to only have one character wouldn't it make sense to test everything at least a little before committing to a game purchase?
Explain how charging for a trial makes any sense at all?
If I have to explain why you shouldn't be able to play a game for free that cost millions to create then America is in worse shape than anyone can comprehend. The creators of Darkfall have been doing all the right things when it comes to a free trial until now. Not one company on the planet should ever allow you to play their game for free ever. You should always be forced to purchase the game and figure out through the purchase that you don't like it. You have many. many outlets to figure out if the game is not for you and you still want a free trial? Spend the money and earn the right to post how much you like/dislike it afterward.

For someone who has "never tried it to care one way or another", you certainly seem to have been following this game with some sort of vested interest
I read most articles here and on other sites about current and upcoming MMOs. Despite Aventurine's beginning missteps and Tasos being a publicist's worst nightmare,I do not wish the company to go bankrupt and am sort of rooting for them as an indie underdog.I was not willing to take the plunge without trying it first however as I was unsure if I'd like the game play or not especially as this sort of game is totally dependent on it's community to make it fun.Like I said it's just my opinion formed from reading DF player posts here and elsewhere that the player base does not seem to be one I'd personally enjoy being subjected to.
Now I could be totally wrong and the poepel posting may be onyl a small percentage of an otherwise friendly and mature community. But without clear evidence of this I am not willing to put money down on it.Yes I have seen threads on here and only here of how the community is becoming MORE friendly but the peopel posting aren't exactly th emost unbiased and may have what you accuse me of a vested interest.
Now on topic.I have been cash poor in the past due to bad choices on my part but now that I am not I still value every dollar I make so am an active not passive consumer.Having said that unlike some here I can see both sides of the argument on this one.One dollar is not a lot for 10 days entertainment but I do understand that it could set a bad precedent. As I aid it's not the dollar that stops me taking a chance.
I posted this up on Massively and I figured I would post it here also to open some discussion on why I think Darkfall charges $1 for there trial as opposed to offering it up for free.
Lets take a few things into account here. One Darkfall is a FFA PvP game. You can attack anyone at anytime without much repercussions (aka there are no true safe zones within the game - the I believe the latest patch offers up some new player style of protection - not for sure haven't played in two-three months) Two Darkfall revolves around a deep community based meta game of spying, seigeing, and community. (Eve Online has a very similar system in Low Sec space. Only thing is Darkfall doesn't exactly have a Low Sec area.. All of Darkfall is considered Low Sec) Three there are known hacks that work within Darkfall that are constently being worked on to get plugged. Now with that said theres real issues with offering a true free trial for Darkfall without putting some type of limitations on the trial. (In the current case there are no limits to a trial account. Your free to do everything a full darkfall player can do.) First issue I for see is keeping people from making dozens of alts to flood the starter cities and killing any player attempting to try out the game. This is a real issue because every people game is flooded with people that make it there pure goal to gank and ruin other peoples enjoyment. Heck you see this in Mortal Online right now in the open beta. With trial accounts being free there is nothing to keep someone from making dozens of accounts or heck even small guilds that live off ruining others fun making a bunch of accounts just to zerg the starter citys and kill everyone and everything. Second issue being economy based. Making alt characters to just farm the starter zone camps to sell the items for silver / gold endlessly. This alone would completely ruin the economy that has built up within Darkfall and it would open a huge door saying come on in farmers.. we want you! Third using the free trial accounts as a means to spy on your enemys without any repercussions. Whats to keep a guild from rolling up a bunch of trial accounts to just create characters to stand outside your enemys city and attack the guild anytime they leave there city? Yes a new player wont put up too much effort ageanst an established player but a group of new players can easly take down an established player or two. Numbers do make a big difference. Forth the real issue of hacking. There are known hacks for Darkfall. Heck there are hacks for every game out there. Within Darkfall the GM's have clamped down on the hacking alot by banning accounts of hackers and people / guilds using hacks. A free trial account system would just open the door for anyone and everything to grab a hack and ruin the game. Yes the idea situation would be for them to fix the hacks. And thats something they have been endlessly working on but its a real ongoing issue non the less. Fith land based pvp control. Whats to keep a guild from rolling up a guild of free trial alts to run around and capture the farms, mini towns, ect.? The entire system would be crazy and I am sure there are people and guilds that would make it there entire purposes to do just this endlessly without effort so that other paying guilds, players, ect can not control said farm, mini city, ect. (There are timers that control how often a city can be attacked / defended.) Sixth being the extra costs of allowing free people on the server. GM's will have more load put open them. Bandwidth charges for people downloading the client + patchs and the extra load put open the server. All of these are things that directly effect the current Paying Subscription Customer base of the game. Subscription players now have to wait twice a long for answers due to trial accounts also flooding the system with questions, issues, harssment, ect. Ageain I am not fan of Darkfall. It's a interesting game and deserves its place alongside Eve Online and other games that are trying to find there nich place among MMO players. With that said its been several months since I last played Darkfall and things might have changed alot since then. Maybe there are mechanics in place to prevent some of the above from happening. But the only real thing I could see would be putting restrictions on trial accounts. No Looting / Trading, No PvP Allowed, Can not Capture Cities / Ect. But if they did that then you would be missing out on the entire game. Because that is what Darkfall is based around.
QFT (again)
This post pretty much sums up most of the reason why a 1$ Trial is necessary. But there's also the issue that, as someone else mentionned, DarkFall uses Cluster server which costs a TON and Free Trials would cause heavy load on the server, resulting in poor performance for subscrbers and increasing the costs of the server (which is already a lot).
Aventurine really CARES about their paying customers and will make sure that their paying customers get what they paid for. They already showed this at launch with the limited pre-orders. They wanted to focus on making sure the game was stable and allow current customers to have a stable experience in the game.
Beside, a free trial does not support Aventurine in any way, shape or form.
Well then so be it, you don't want to try the game for $1, and many other people won't. Fine, good for you, save your dollar towards a monthly subscription for any other MMO that you enjoy.
But charging a $1 wasn't done to make money, or to charge for a trial, IT WAS DONE TO PROTECT THE CURRENT PLAYERBASE.
For that, I applaud Aventurine, and if deters people from trying it because it's a dollar but keeps the integrity of the game intact, than I am extremely happy.
Do you realize that I can generate any Credit Card number and they can't check if it's real card before making payment? That $1 or 1 Euro is to check credit card credibility. They are protecting their current player base which is fine by me since I'm playing and haven't seen any hakers or gold spammers yet. As for going afk for 7 minutes while gathering: in EVE you can go for 15-20 min afk gathering with proper setup. EVE must be even worse then. Btw. Don't call other games gameplay design model bad simply because you don't like it. It's good that since day 1 you can mine/gather products that are used by all players around. Besides you are playing WoW and GA. Both games I find dull but at least I'm not coming to their forums 10 times a day to convince them(you) how shitty their game is.
I really don't know where you're going with the credit card nonsense. 99.9% of trials/demos for games are free, do you really think it's unreasonable for me to criticize DF's trial for not being free? Do you really think it's unreasonable for me to point out the gameplay shortcomings which might cause Adventurine to need to charge?
It's not like in those 99.9% of free trials they're asking for your credit card but not charging. No, they're doing the logical thing and simply offering the game for free.
Also the thread originated in the general gaming forum. Not my fault if it's moved.

Yes and look at all those MMO's filled with gold farmers/hackers/spammers, Sorry we don't want that here and "Aventurine need to charge 1$ to make a profit" are you kidding? they don't make any money after transaction fees jesus just stick with WoW and gtfo please kthx.

They have no need to to charge anything, do you really think they're going to make a "killing" charging $1 for a trial?
Again, if you can't understand that the ONLY reason they are probably charging $1 is to ensure that the current paying subscriber base doesn't get shat on by a bunch of gold farmers, hackers, or mining alts, then you are too thick skinned to talk to. Argue all the semantics you want, but Aventurine is doing this to keep people like me, a one year paying subscriber, from having to deal with a crappy in-game experience because of people abusing a "free" , credit card number generated hack account.
Haters gonna hate. Its so easy how they gloat and gloom about everything. And the worst part is that thye believe they are doing good with their mmo-bashing, at a mmo formum
It seems that Ive to tell you guys what I think about the trial. The game is fun. Totally worth my 1€ spent and 45 minutes of download+patching. The game runs smooth on my i7 4Ghz with 4850 1b in crossfire@1920x1200. No issues with lag or anything. The community is friendly (AS LONG AS YOU DONT BEHAVE LIKE A CREEP (LIKE SOME HERE)) and are helping us newbies alot.

Glad you're having fun already, but let the hater's hate. Remember pre-beta/pre-launch days? Hell, I go back sometimes to these very forums and check around those dates just to see the HILARIOUS troll posts that people used to post about.
If I had a penny for every post someone made about how Darkfall was vaporware or like "Dark and Light", I'd be a millionaire. Funny how after one year, Darkfall is still alive, they've moved into huge new offices, and the population is growing. Strange, huh?

"Needs" aren't just profit, man. Whatever rationalization the DF fanbase has come up where a $1 trial makes sense to them, that rationalizationis the Need.
So yes there was a need to charge something, or they wouldn't have charged.
Basically my point is they've game-designed themselves into a corner where the best possible decision is a bad decision. It seems perfectly reasonable to criticize them for this, even if I freely admit that it might have been their best possible option (given the constraints surrounding their decision.) But those constraints were entirely of their own design, and that's where they screwed up.
drago_pl said: "in EVE you can go for 15-20 min afk gathering with proper setup. EVE must be even worse then."
(Missed this reply earlier) Yes Darkfall's gathering is slightly better than EVE's. Eating dirt is slightly tastier than eating human waste. Neither is enjoyable.
When something is bad, the existence of something worse isn't justification for the status quo.

Good riddance....

Spend the money and earn the right to post how much you like/dislike it afterward.
as much as I would like to express myself on that $1 saving I am more curious to learn what game you are going to be playing instead.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Whatever rationalization the DF fanbase has come up where a $1 trial makes sense to them, that rationalization is the Need.
