don't know if i would even consider SWTOR a MMORPG just yet. sounds more like a COop RPG.
Haha! Irony. Anyway, Star Wars for me. Star Wars is my favorite IP, Bioware is one of my favorite game devs and many of my friends are saying they'll play.
Also, for the guys saying this is going to be a single-player, mostly instanced game, please, just don't say anything. It's only going to make you look dumb in the future.
So far, judging by information I was about to find out about TOR, it seems to be WoW with voice overs and great quests.
That would be... disappointing. :-(
I really want good gameplay for an MMO. Story is just a plus, as it alone cannot keep me occupied for more than one month or so. I don't want to invest 50 € for SWToR just to realise it's WoW with Star Wars graphics and better quests. :-(
Bioware keeps saying that the endgame is going to be really special but it's just corporate talk as from what I've been able to gather, based on the various hints dropped by the developers, the endgame is going to revolve around instances, raids and battlegrounds.
Judging by the game play videos, the combat is pretty much the same as other MMOs. Yes, there is a cover system but Tabula Rasa had one as well.
Like I said, the game will have amazing stories but it will not be revolutionizing anything.
If it is too much like WoW, than most players will probably stick with WoW since the game has 5+ years of content and patches, plus all the progress those players have already put into that game. Asking players to start over and pay for a new game that is exactly the same as their previous game is insane.

That's my fear. I'm going to buy TOR because I'm a pretty big Star Wars and Bioware fan but I'm worried that if the game is going to be too much like WoW, people will just stick with WoW and TOR will go the same route as AoC and WAR.

People keep spouting on about BioWare making the best RPG,well that's up for debate.
I would choose "The Witcher EE" over DAO and ME1 and every other game they have bought out since BG1-2 and NWN1.
All their most recent games are like playing a freaking b- movie, they are lifeless and damn right over hyped and boring.
And when this baby comes out you can forget about the crap that is DAO,lol that so called mature RPG,yeah right.
Go play"the witcher ee" then talk about a mature adult rpg.
This will blow DAO out of the water but you know it wont get better reviews than anything Bioware have done because reviews are sucking up to Bioware and the yanks really don't get European RPG.

I voted for TOR . As a SWG vet i know its not going to be SWG2 so ill take it for what is.They have produced some very good varied single player rpg's over the years .

Lol, a Witcher fanboy. Clearly you haven't played Mass Effect 2, comparing it with B-movies is just beyond ridiculous. Sure, Bioware gets a lot of hype but not undeserved. And yeah, I'm European, and yes, I have played them all - DAO, the Witcher and Mass Effect 1 and 2.
But about GW2 and TOR: TOR will be a big hit, it being in the hands of Bioware instead of another game company like Cryptic or SOE sure helps the franchise, but I expect something new and different from GW2. I played GW and it was a blast, plus they did a lot of things differently compared to other MMO's: no subs, being able to choose 2 classes, limited skill set, it was not a bunch of separate servers but one world (although heavily instanced), and the arena and guild combat was great and reminded me of Magic the Gathering with the many different skills you could pick from.
Everything I read about GW2 convinces me that GW2 will even be better. I always liked the art design of GW too, and GW2 looks to be just as awesome.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Oh honestly, you just had to pick the two games that I was the most hyped about! Which is not such a bad thing actually, only problem is that I'm equally hyped about both! I'm a huge fan of Star Wars and I love the idea of being able to play as a Jedi (though for some reason, I didn't really like the Jedi class in SWG, mainly because they weren't supposed to be there in the first place. I mean, Jedi are supposed to be extinct and yet they are all over the place. And, I don't really do well in merlee classes. But I digress). I'm hopping playing as a Jedi would be much more enjoyable in SWTOR.
But the thing is, as much as I love Star Wars... I also love the Guild Wars fanchise! I love the huge emphasis on storyline, the interesting quests, the gameplay mechanics... in fact, I love everything about Guild Wars, with the exception of the fact that there's no crafting, which is sad because I'm a huge crafting fan. So yes, it seems that I equally love both, and I'm eagerly waiting for both to come out.
But about which game would be more successful... I'd say it'll be SWTOR. It's Star Wars, after all.
SW:TOR will probably be a good game, but I seriously doubt it will qualify as a MMO for most people. Bioware just does not do games of that nature. Their games are some of the best, but their designs do not lend themselves to that kind of world. From what I have seen of TOR, I can already say with a great deal of confidence that this game will be a theme park ride through the Old Republic IP, and will be great fun, and most people will play almost all of it in single player. There is nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but it does not get me excited to be a long-term game for me.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Because it will be different enough from WOW (AI, setting, stories, ...) to give the players a totally fresh player experienece while they still recognise the game as an MMO.
SW:TOR is the only game currently in development that has the possibility of attracting subscription numbers close to WoW's.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
SW:ToR had me interested, until I found out basically anyone could be a Jedi (<.<) and that their business concept will most likely involve a Cash shop.
I have a hard time getting exited about TOR. The art style just seems very unatractive to me and the gameplay looks to be rather dumbed down. The ingame story-videos that have been released also seem very boring to me, but perhaps It will be better when we get a picture of the bigger stories that the smaller stories play within. I just think I would have enjoyed a single player SW game much more. I doubt I'll try this game, but we'll see.
I have been playing GW on and off since release so I'm biased towards GW2. With the new game I'm really exited about the dynamic event system, that will replace the old questing system. The new playable races. The gigantic world pvp battles. A much larger map(the persistent areas will be zones, though the zones will be much larger than those in the first game). And the massive underwater areas to explore. Like TOR, GW2 also puts a heavy focus on story, but we still know very little about how this will play out ingame, so I will not pass judgment here. I just hope there will be many missions, as they were always very enjoyable in the first game.
Not trying to offend anyone but it seems that a lot of people are putting way too much faith in the fact that Bioware is making TOR. Yes, Bioware is full of talented developers who make great games but they have absolutely no experience in making MMOs. Most of their MMO experience comes from Mythic which actually worries me, since WAR sucks pretty bad. Based on my experience with Bioware games, I have no doubt that TOR will have amazing story lines for the different classes. However, I have yet to read anything about TOR which makes it an MMO that will stand out from the rest. So far, judging by information I was about to find out about TOR, it seems to be WoW with voice overs and great quests.
Unfortunaly I have to agree with most you said except for what I marked.
So far both games look great/awesome as just games, still not allot of info what makes these games a MMORPG. I keep hearing Bioware is going to put the RPG back in this genre, but to me RPG in a MMORPG is roleplaying a character that I have created with my own journey/story to be made instead of pre-made story, RPG in singleplayer games is about pre-made story.
A example of who I felt really put the MMO RPG into their games was way back with Star Wars Galaxies, as I roleplayed one of the races but was placed in the Star Wars Universe and enjoy it the way I wanted to with little to no handholding, but could make my own adventure, and yes I know the majority of people into this genre disaprove on that as they need something to tell them what to do ingame as most have proven to lack the ability to come up with things to do, kinda the reason why SOE made the NGE in hopes to atract the handhold crowed, which obviously backfired on SOE.
In the end I am sure I am gonna atleast try both of these games but to be honost nothing upcomming seems intrested enough to give me that MMORPG fibe.

That is a good point imo, most RP'ers prefer to create their own personae etc, rather than have it dictated to them, i've no doubt that bioware will try and put together some decent storylines etc, but so far, i havent seen much of anything that would really encourage me to think that this is a game i must have...
both..but Bioware has to deliver...A-net has shown us their stuff and it is goooooood
GW2 will big great..but however i also believe that the MMO market is going to break the trend with these next few years. Devs and their producers have seen what has happen, you had AoC WaR Vanguard (all which tanked although they have their respected communities and i do hop on the endless trial for some RvR action in WaR, as well as AoC picking its self up now and looking like it should have) then you see these games like DF (yeah it had its ups and downs but i would say is doing well as i have seen from some videos) and Fallen Earth which give these indie devs credit for showing up the big namers.
anyway the trend of WoW holding all the subs is going to be over...sure they have cata but the Market is getting some large games out there. First GW2 which bite and chew WoW if Cata cant come through..the persistent world coupled with the no sub and great PvP will (IMHO) break some numbers and i see the future for A-NET to be positive
Then you have the PvE crowd, which i will feel will flock to SWTOR as the greatest of the single player stories that many people love will come together in an online universe..plus it is STAR WARS
APB and Earthrise will come through as shooter fans and sandbox lovers get to expand their choices
These next years will be great to watch and better to live through....and ohh yeah i voted for GW2

I could go on and on but you get the picture. There are people working on TOR from all over the industry, plenty of them have MMO backgrounds, most of the system engineers especially. A lot of the devs on the team actually have experience working on old school titles like Merridian 59, Uo, shadowbane, and of course SWG.
Yes BIoware as a studio has never released an MMO, in TOR's case they hired people who have.
After this post do i really need to say which game I've been following?
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
None,I'm more interested in FF XIV and TSW because they are far from all those generic MMOs.
I laugh because you are funny.
GW2 and SWTOR......; I'd have to say GW2 because I like the story a lot more and I don't know about you but I think role playing is about being a character in a world and living out a great story, whether it be pre-made or not. That being said I'll still play SWTOR, till I get bored anyway.
All their most recent games are like playing a freaking b- movie, they are lifeless and damn right over hyped and boring. Anyway GW2,look at what they are offering.. wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2

Sure ,BioWare get's a lot of hype but much of it is undeserved. And yeah, like you num nuts, i am a European, and yes i have played every single rpg that Bioware have made, that includes Mass Effect 2.
ME2 was not even up to par on ME1,yes playing recent BioWare games is like watching a freaking movie on repeat, the same shit ,nothing new just a different box cover. You can spout off how they are the blah blah pawnz, lol, but they are the same dry crap that BioWare have been churning out over the last 6 years, freaking boring.
I'm slightly hyped up for both, to be honest. TOR will have great stories but GW2 sounds like it will have great PvP. So I'll be getting both. It also helps that GW2 will have no subscription fee.
Makes it easy to play both! An MMORPG box is a deal if the game lasts more than a month, compared to buying a single player box.
I can easily pay for the GW box, and more than likely I'll easily get my money's worth, and there's no sub fee if I want to keep playing!
And, I can buy the TOR box, and to keep playing if I like it is only 14.95 a month. What a bargain for a month's worth of gaming! Not as much as "free" but still very cheap.
I give Star Wars the edge. I wasn't crazy about the leveling system in GW. To much sideways progression, not enough vertical progression.
And with Star Wars, I want to see this new multiplayer dialog system, and see what the Hero Engine can do.
TOR, though I'll probably wait a month or two so I don't get trampled by the flood of people on launch day and BioWare has some breathing room to fix primary bugs.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Guild Wars 2.
GW2 since I loved GW so much. I am waiting for SW:ToR too.
Currently playing: N/A
Retired from: GW, WAR, Aion, LOTRO, Rift, SW:TOR, Vinductus

In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...
This is not a game.
Lol ,a Mass Effect fanboy. Clearly you don't know shit about what i have played and what i haven't,your assumption is beyond ridiculous.
See what i did their?
Lol.

SWTOR hands down.
This is like choosing between Money(swtor) and a piece of plastic(gw2).
Which one would you want?
Not really hyped per se but if i had to choose then it'd be TOR. I was never much interested in Guild Wars anyway.
