A little information all the "this is not an MMO" whiners should think about:
What is the meaning of MMO?
As far as I remember it's Massive Multiplayer Online.
Now take a closer look at StarCraft 2: You can play it with or against a massive amount of players, while you are using the multiplayer part and you have to be online to do so.
Looking at theese facts everyone has to agree that StarCraft 2 is an MMO.
Guys, we're not listing the game, we're just doing an article on it. If you think a ton of MMO gamers aren't also looking toward Blizzard's RTS, you're wrong. We do our best to bring stories that are going to be of interest to our readers and we think that this is. We did the same thing with Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age.
If you're not interested in reading about non-MMOs, then don't click on it.
Not to be rude :-)
Seems to me that you only do it with american games, you don't give european dev teams the same attention.
It would be nice to see this site give the same attention to european devs as they do US/Can
I cannot speak for Jon & team entirely - but I really think this was just a "stumble upon" thing at the recent PAX show. Blizzard was there showing off SC2 and offered us a test drive. If Ferrari had been there offering Jon a ride a new 458 Scaglietti I am betting he would have said "hell ya!" and I would hope he would share his experience with a cool story on the site. Of course I would have to fire him out of pure jealousy
I assure you that we have no bias against EU developers or developers from any region. We try to cover the things that a) the community wants to hear about and b) developers give us the opportunity to cover.
I think The Witcher was a great game and am seriously looking forward to The Witcher 2!

Playing for ... 15 minutes and then concluding "...is that if you enjoyed the first one, you're going to love this one...".
And fill a complete page on mmorpg.com
... and getting paid...
Who else wants to have soma cake please ?
That's fifteen minutes more play time than most people have had. He also states in the article that he witnessed a good deal of play time as well.
This was the play time we were granted by Blizzard, so that's what was reported on. You don't have to be a douche about it.
I can understand with the post and the people who believe that Star Craft 2 should'nt be here, but everyone has their own views about things.
As far as that goes, I for one am looking forward to Blizzards RTS Star Craft 2, but for comments like " You don't have to be a douche about it" is'nt very professional, especially from a Moderator! To the mod, everyone has a right to say what they want reasonably, but to call someone a douche is'nt right at all.
For future referance you might want to " Use " this quote as a template to what NOT to say, Be more professional because that little comment was not.

It's called spamming. If mmorpg.com is officially a spam site, they should let us know so we take our measures. I joined the site to read about mmorpgs. I wasted 5 mins to read about that Starcraft II thing only to realize it's not a MMO.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
This kinda crap has got to stop. Blizzard is just a company that provides high quality video games. They've earned a lot of respect in software development circles.
It almost seems like you guys (mmorpg.com writers) feel the need to apologize for speaking positively about Blizzard.
No apology necessary. They're a damn good company that releases damn good games and has for a long, long time.
Agreed 100%.
I was going to make the same reply but you said it well enough.
And I will had, this is an MMO site not a gaming site. Yes, players here are interested in games in general, but I come here for MMO news not gaming news in general.
This review is awful. From the perspective of a Starcraft player it simply appears ignorant. I found it simplistic, uninformative, and badly researched. The reviewer attempts to compare the game to Starcraft 1 but fails due to his lack of knowledge about the game.
This game deserves some attention but read a review from someone who knows what they're talking about: www.teamliquid.net

I would not state that because it is no true. MMORPG.com has *never* taken money for *any* article to be published - EVER! This is an absolute fact and a major point of pride for this establishment. I know many sites that do this - but generally they are more upfront about it - labeling it an "advertorial" or something like that - we do not practice this at this website...period.
The great thing for people like you is you can stand there and accuse someone like myself of a dishonest act like this because there is no way for me to prove that we did not do this. Documents or evidence of any kind do not exist for something that did not happen. Only the reverse is true.
So I suggest before you start accusing people of lying and cheating you have some shred of evidence to back it up. Anything short of this and you are just a pathetic excuse for a human being - and you display no integrity for yourself at all.
It would be like me pointing you out on the street and saying you cheat on your taxes and kill puppies without any evidence.

So much "it's not an MMO" nerdrage. Don't like it? Don't read it.
As for the article itself, more familiarity with Starcraft 1 would've helped it. The races were already unique in SC1 (it's basically the poster child for balancing asymmetric races in an RTS,) and they remain so in SC2 -- but the author makes it sound like this is a new trait of SC2. Same with "high ground": existed in SC1, just as important in SC2.
Personally I turn these similarities around as my biggest complaint with SC2 so far:
In many ways SC2 is Brood Wars 2. It takes a great game, adds a few new units, patches in some excellent quality of life enhancements, but doesn't fundamentally alter gameplay or offer a completely new experience. SC1 was a fantastic game, and maybe this result is better than another Warcraft 3, but I was hoping for a new game experience whereas SC2 is predominantly the same game as the first one.
But hey, if everything old is new again and other gamers react to it like the article's author, then perhaps that's enough. The majority of gamers out there never even experienced the first game. The first game is defnitely a fantastic balancing of 3 asymmetric sides, of military vs. econ vs. defense purchases, and of micro- vs. macromanagement. It might be enough simply to carry forward that time-tested multiplayer game, add a few small changes, and put most of the energy into providing an amazing singleplayer campaign.
I understand your statements but I would argue that this game is designed to progress the story and not necessarily introduce new game mechanics. New game mechanics are great, don't get me wrong, but where the story left me wanting in the original, I'm hoping this release will leave me satisfied. Just the way I'm looking at it of course. *shrug*
I assume you're referring to the cliffhanger ending? Don't hold your breath. Blizzard universes are designed to provide eternal conflict.
The biggest conceivable surprise of SC2's storyline would be for the conflict to end; to be resolved with peace restored to the galaxy.
I do agree that singleplayer is the big selling point (something I'm looking forward to too) but that also doesn't quite rationalize a lack of innovation.
I should also clarify that this design strategy fits with Blizzard policy: take a proven formula and polish the crap out of it. Perhaps they noticed that "geting it right" when trying something new isn't easy. Warcraft 3 (something new) was less deep and fun a game in multiplayer compared with Starcraft. So this time around they went with a proven formula to ensure baseline game depth, given that SC1 is one of the most succesfully time-tested RTS formulas out there.

Well, excessive appearance of lame or forgotten games on #1 spot of hyped games is the proof that you guys have started artificially bumping games that have no place to be bumped. When i look for a new MMO game to play i look at the top hyped games first, and dont generally like being misled. Pretty much what im saying and some others that MMORPG.com has become a little lame lately.
I just wanted to let y'all know that I have put about 25 hours into the SC2 beta and I can tell you all that this is an absolute fantastic game. Yes, it's true, if you loved the first one, you will love the second one. However, this is not simply the first game, recreated with new graphics. SC2 retains the same general "feel" that the first one has, but introduces entirely new game mechanics and units that do not let you play the same strategies that you used in the first one. As you all know, Blizzard is one of the best developers out there at balancing, and I have to say, the constant updates to the already extremely polished beta have actually been a lot of fun to play through. A couple tweaks here and there, and us beta players have to switch some strategies around. The bottom line, is that whenever this game is released, you should experience this fantastic game.

To the admin,
I love this site, I get ALL my gaming information from here, and in general, I always liked what the staff at mmorpg had to say and with the reviews., I have been happy with this site till now,..You guys make up rules for us to follow, fairly simple ones at that, easy to follow, sure but are they always followed? To answer your question No, but for the staff themselves to break those rules is completely wrong, for example,
" Anything short of this and you are just a pathetic excuse for a human being - and you display no integrity for yourself at all. "
Honestly, you could have worded that better and have put it in a less intrusive, insulting manner, because stuff like that apparently is'nt tolerated from your site? is it?
I admit, even myself I get frustrated as well with some people on this site, but then I look at it this way, just breath relax, step away from the computer go outside and take a walk, whatever cools you down. Having worked for Microsoft myself, and being a Moderator for the Xbox live site and zune site I can tell you that not one of us ( From Microsoft ) have ever used that approach with customers, clients ect....
Maybe you should go back to the drawing board with those rules and regulations you have inplace for trolling and intrusive behavior, because what you just showed us right in the paragraph,.. was everything you were trying to prevent.
I still think the game is overhyped. "OMG BLIZZARD!" "OMG STARCRAFT!" People are so hyped up about the game because of those names. And also because others are hyped up. It's like a mass frenzy. People screaming at each other "starcraft", and the dude next to them doesn't know what's going on but simply joins the fray.
Yes, the game will probably be balanced and have decent graphics. But apart from balance I see NOTHING extraordinary there. "It has 3D-graphics", woah... Total Annihilation, which came around at the time of Star Craft 1, had true 3D graphics already. "It has build animations", well Settlers 1 had detailed build animations like 20 years ago. I watched some of the videos about Starcraft 2, and most of them are treating the most basic stuff as it would be just invented by them and the holy grail in matters of gaming. Like scout towers. Heroes of Might and Magic 1 had them 20 years ago already. It's as if someone would build a car and say: "and guess what: It has wheels. They are round. See? Round! OMG ROUND!!!! Round wheels!!!!" and everyone would be "OMG OMG OMG A CAR WITH WHEELS!!".
I'm not saying Stacraft 2 is bad. It will be most likely a very nice game if you are a fan of hectic micro management. In matters of RTS I rather prefer the Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander series. Still I so so far NOTHING new Starcraft 2 is adding to the RTS genre.
Oh, and it's no MMORPG. It's not even an MMO. The article is probably here because it attracts users. Same as an article about playmates would attract users.

No, I don't believe I broke our own rules at all. I simply stated that anyone who blindly accuses anyone of something without having any facts whatsoever is a pathetic excuse for a human being (breaking our rules would be directly insulting someone - if the poster has evidence that we did such a terrible thing then he does not fit my profile and it was not directed at him). This is not a direct insult to the person I was replying to. I think anyone who acts this way is a sad case.
I have put my all into this website for nearly a decade and we have taken massive efforts with both myself in the ad sales area and our editorial team to make sure this site will never stoop to levels of "advertorial" content or selling the rights to coverage in any way shape or form. When someone comes along and accuses us of something that is is frankly disgusting to this team it is the act of a pathetic person indeed. This applies to anyone, anywhere who accuses another person or entity of something that attacks their character without having any proof of it. This of course is a rampant problem on the Internet due to its anonimity which gives people courage of great levels.
Imagine if someone just started shouting out that you cheated on your husband/wife/girlfriend/etc at a social gathering without any proof - just because they figured they know it all - you are attractive and ALL attractive people cheat, right? This is a uncalled for attack on your character and if you did not beat the crap out of them I assume you would feel they were a pathetic excuse for a human being, no? ;-)

You got invited to demo the game. I doubt that was purely out of Blizzard's kind heart.

A game company wanting a media outlet to demo a game so they can write about it and accusing that site of taking money for such a thing are two completely different things. I mean the entire purpose for Blizzard being at the PAX show is to get their product exposed to the media. No one denies this as it is pretty obvious. People are here saying we were paid for this and that is just total unfounded B.S.
The guy who was offering that demo is so completely disconnected from the ad agencies that will eventually determine what sites get included in their campaign that it is not even possible for this article to have any impact on that. You know who gets the ad deals? The lowest bidders in terms of performance for dollars spent...period. The ad agency wants to look good to their client (Blizzard or whoever) and they will try to give them the biggest bang for their ad dollars...they could give a little hairy rats butt about what articles we wrote.
Of course this is a business. Virtually every website in existence is (CNN, Fileplanet, New York Times, MSN, Yahoo, Google, on and on) - how else would one pay for such an operation? That does not mean that most of us don't believe in business ethics. I am in this for the long haul and I would have to be an idiot to cross this line. The fastest way to destroy this website would be to risk our reputation. If I did this one of the MANY people that have worked for this site or the publishers we work with in the past 8 years would have come forth with evidence proving we did these kinds of things. This site succeeds without needing to stoop to levels like this.

My buddy Mike made a restaurant... we re not listing it, we re just doing an article on it. If you think a ton of MMO gamers aren't also looking towards a good dinner, you 're wrong. We do our best to bring stories that are going to be of interest to our readers and we think that this is. We did the same thing with Starcraft II the other day don't you remember...?
If you're not interested in reading about non-games, then don't click on it.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
I myself would not click on it, nor complain. So what's the issue? None that I see.
Some ppl here did click on this article, and did complain. Who's to blame there?

Thats excellent can't wait to play this.
(Is also wishing alot of posters here would grow up, who cares if its an MMO or not, its bloody starcraft 2!)
Wolfenpride: <--Giant fucking sword syndrome.
Probably cause im trying to compensate for miniscule manhood.

Im liking seeing some mods calling names. Some people really deserve it.
Besides, they brought back the 21-day trial thread for EVE so, *thumbs up* mmorpg.com
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

I just went ahead and skipped the comments on this one, kinda know what everyones going to be talking about.
But, good read. Been playing in beta for awhile now, its deffinitly standing tall as starcraft always has.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
This is a uncalled for attack on your character and if you did not beat the crap out of them I assume you would feel they were a pathetic excuse for a human being, no? ;-)

You were passive agressive, but yea, you called him pathetic excuse of a human being. Let me refresh your memory.

So, you called him out and said he was accusing you of a dishonest act without evidence, then you called people who do these things pathetic excuses for human beings...not a hard train to catch.
This IS a commercial site. It is a money-making venture. Don't expect us to forget that.
You got invited to demo the game. I doubt that was purely out of Blizzard's kind heart.
"" Voice acting isn't an RPG element....it's just a production value." - grumpymel2

This thread goes to further prove a theory I've had for the last year or so: the MMORPG community is becoming more and more angry.
But where does the anger come from? I have my theories on that too.
