They recycle audio alot. For example, your footsteps on metal in STO are the same ones as in Champions Online, and even CoX before it. Seeing as how CoX's sounds were over the top for even the superhero games, they sound flat out silly in STO. NWN will probably be even worse.
Did anyone else get annoyed at the "kasplodey" sound that happens when you launch from the title screen? A cartoony explosion sound to launch a trek game? REALLY???
They use a lot of recycled audio in LOTRO. A lot of the sounds I noticed are from AC2. I don't have a problem with it in STO.
If AC2 was a space or superhero game, there'd be reason to be annoyed. DDO also has sound effects from LotRO(vice versa, actually) and AC2, but seeing as how they're all fantasy games, it's not much of an issue.
Taking intentionally cartoony sound fx from a comic book game and putting them in Star Trek... well... the kerplodey launch FX signal what's to come.
Kirk strikes the beast with a mighty two-fisted blow(cue howitzer sound FX)...
STO *is* a comic book game, the comic book version of a real Star Trek MMO
I miss Tabula Rasa too. Few downed MMOs make me sadface, but the loss of that one did.
Cheers,
insanex
Unlike STO and CO, I think TR could have been salvaged. Either by adding downtime activities and keeping the sub model, or going to a F2P DDO model. Unfortunately, NCSoft dumps games in the blink of an eye.
From what I've heard they dropped Tabula Rasa so they didn't have to pay bonuses to the Garriots.
It seems likely to be true since TR could so clearly have been saved.
I think I read somewhere there were a lot of bad blood between TR developers and ncsoft so that's why it was dropped. After that they apparently fired garriott and then tried to claim he left voluntarily to remove any claim he had to ncsoft stock.

One of my least favourite parts of LOTRO is the crappy sound effects. The music is great, I love the music system (I made a minstral just so I could play all the instruments) but the sound effects are bad.
What's with companies ignoring such an important aspect of the game nowadays?
What kills me is the number of people(including me) telling others just how empty and shallow the game was and yet people still bought into it. Oh well...live and learn.
It's one thing to purchase a game to give it the benefit of the doubt (i did), and it's another to buy-into a clearly poor product just for the sake of saving-face or because one's a horrible judge of character. Every game will have stragglers, like sto, that hang onto what they hope it will become or because those have little to no rationale expectation for something remotely good, but those same people have very little credibility when it comes to an opinion of what might be appealing.
There are also a lot of lifers who defend the game to the hilt because they invested heavily in it and they are SOL if the game goes under or goes free-to-play, there are people playing who are playing simply because it's a sci-fi MMO in a market of fantasy clones (these people will be gone when EVE Incarna, Black Prophesy, and SWTOR come out,) there are people who are playing just because it's Star Trek and they expect this will ever be their only chance to play a Star Trek MMO (there is no hope for these people, they're also very likely to buy everything put up for sale in the C-Store doing their part to keep STO on life support for a very long time,) and finally there are people who have never, ever played an MMO before STO and they simply have no idea how bad STO really is from an MMORPG standpoint. They think STO must be par for the course for MMOs, and they would probably be very surprised by what they found if they ever played another MMO.
It seems to me that those are the people who play STO as well as those who hope it will get better or those who are simply bad judges of the quality of media (and judgeing by the number of Voyager and Enterprise fans there are quite a few people who are bad judges of the quality of media. :P)
If I had an STO forum account, then I would ask "how many of you bought the lifetime because you are satisfied with the way the game is today?"
I don't judge other peoples taste in games, but it is not so good if they only bought lifetimes due to some promise or potential or faith or hope that they see in the game. I really have not seen one person say they are satisfied with STO as it currently is today.
Sure, everyone wants changes and improvements, but if they knew the game would never improve would they still buy the LTS? If the answer is no, that's way too much of a gamble for me personally.

The only thing that bothers me is the complete lack of tolerance here. Why does someone have to be defective in some way or as you put it "are simply bad judges of character" or an ignorant / deluded sycophant, who will "...buy everything put up for sale in the C-Store doing their part to keep STO on life support..." in order to enjoy this game?
If you have invested in something, you do or did enjoy, is it not natural to support that something? Must everyone see the world through your eyes or somehow be wrong?
There are countless things that people find fun that I do not, but I do not feel the need to label these people or consider them as inferior in any way. It's one thing to not understand how someone derives pleasure from doing what you dislike but deciding they must be fools for doing so is rather ignorant in a way.

Battlefield: Earth is a bad movie, as is Ishtar, Batman & Robin, and Plan 9 From Outer Space. Now, barring liking these movies from a purely "so bad they're good" reason if someone tried to tell me that these movies are objectively as good as Casablanca, The Dark Knight, The Seven Samurai, or The Empire Strikes Back I would think that their taste in movies must be simply bad and they must simply be unable to judge bad movies from good.
The same goes for video games. If you maintian that STO is objectively a great game and even better than the likes of EVE Online, Bioshock or Oblivion then I would seriously question that person's judgement. I understand that there can be some small enjoyment from the game (otherwise it would have went belly-up long ago) I also understand this enjoyment to be short term, shallow, and casual enjoyment. None of these things bode well in an MMORPG where long term enjoyment is a huge factor in maintaining subscription numbers.
Some people are simply illogical in their defence of this game.

Its repetitive and boring...i am glad you like it ...but how mamy MMO's have you played if you dont mind me asking? I think its a great single player game.... but has no place in the MMO world.

All you are doing is taking a "I am right, you are wrong" approach to a purely subjective media. While it may be a fact that compared side by side with other games in the genre STO is lacking, it is not a fact that Treklover321 is wrong in his subjective opinion that the game is the best thing since sliced bread.
Slate STO all you want but cant you just leave people be? Let them enjoy the things they love, without having to label them as fools of some description? I enjoy looking at your CoX screenies, there are plenty of people who think CoX is rubbish. Does that make you illogical for liking it?
Some people are simply illogical in their defence of this game.
I play this game because I find it fun. It's as simple as that.
I'm not going to make justifcations or defend the game. I play what I find fun and the moment that stops, I move on.
and some kids found hanging and killing cats fun as well.. There are sometimes you are just wrong in liking something, and it just shows bad taste.. Ya know. like the guy that wears stripes and plaids on the beach with black socks while looking for coins with his metal detectors..

Who's worse really, the one who plays a bad game because they like it? Or the sad one who sits on a forum bashing a game thats already down.
Leave it alone, leave its players alone to play, and grow a pair.

I absolutely love this thread, as it flies in some cases so hard againest hard evidence.
The game is tanking so hard for reasons stated over so many times, its becoming like the 10 freakin commandments on how not to use a popular ip for a quick buck.
The evidence is in the numbers they are truely awful, not bad, not terrible but F-King terrible for the ip and time its been out, and to write on forums argueing the finer points of one mans pleasure is another mans hate, is beyond deluded when the stats point out a 500 to 1 agreement on what there is to hate.
The story of King Canute comes to mind, with the KIng representing the remaining gamers, and the sea representing popular opinion and reality, and there are some posters here going to bed with wet salty feet.

I, for one, am certainly not suggesting that STO is a great game. All I'm saying is; Dislike like it as much as you like, but to brand those who do like it as anything other than normal is "beyond deluded" as you put it.
If someone wants to argue that, for them, the game is better than "X" then good for them. If someone wants to compare it to the rest of the genre, for the sake of a review, and then conclude it's among the best, then yes they are clearly deluded.

"I think its a great single player game" , dude you contradicted yourself , yes it is a good game it just does not fit exactly what you consider to be a mmo, neither does Guild Wars but that still is a great game , the only prob I have with sto is that it takes awhile to play PvP which is silly

The problem is the forum battles are much more entertainng than the actual game. I can't tell from your original sentence if you ever played sto or just plan to in the future. Most people who have played and don't like it find themselves forced to come to third party site to express their criticism due to cryptics heavy censoring of negative opinion. Put on top of the fact that the main sto forum has would could probably be named the worst on the internet. I thought the wow forums were bad. Part of it is the encouragement of such behavior by the mods. The other part I think is due to the more hard core trek fans who will defend any thing star trek to the death.
Which is more embarassing? A community of people who share a negative opion of a game or a group of people who feel they have to ride in on a white horse and stamp out any negativity about sto across the internet? Cryptic has a marketing department that can do that for them. Well, actually their marketing department has proven to be their own worst enemy.

Actualy i just got on.... ?
Then I'm sorry but the window of acceptance has shrunk alot since the beginning of the ride. You sound like someone who has 'eventually' got annoyed at Cryptic. Your a straggler, whether you realize it or not. Most people who were angry at the game, were angry at the start when the problems were there. Now, it's just a broken record. Change the CD.
I wonder, does conflict on forums count as text pvp..

I dont play WoW ...i do play EvE & LOTRO...and i think that is my problem with STO.& the..IP ... it did not have the depth i was expecting ..... STO is an arcade game...?
