And the text files became even shorter and shorter over the years (because they are almost insignificant in on line play), while now you'll have to listen to them in minute long NPC voices.
Like I said in an earlier post: 90% of on line players don't even care to read 6 lines of text, now they'll need to listen to 6 minutes of NPC talk.
Great and immersive in solo games, "death" in on line games, because here the interaction with people count, not NPC talk.
Reading is found to be boring by many, there is no visual emotion. Given the choice would you rather read the script of a movie or watch it? I'd rather watch it. But you know, people are different. I wonder what the majority would say.
But it's also found by many others to be exciting. Instead of watching what someone else says is happening, YOU visualize it in your head. So people look and sound a bit more how you choose them to look. Besides it's seriously sad how horrible people's reading comprehension is. Kids are getting lazy and stupid and reading is important.

The key to playing an MMORPG is that you write the film by game playing the script, not reading or listening or watching it.

This interview is a little worrying. There is a mark of arrogence to comments that MMO's don't deliver but SWToR will. The game is likely not out for over a year and very little show so far of how this story will play out, how it will work in groups and I guess most importantly how it will keep being interesting. You can put all the back story you like in but you either then send players out to grind or you just award them vast amounts of xp with no grinding and have everyone max level in a week.
He was very right that MMO's don't say lets make people grind. But they do need time sinks and since no team no matter how large can keep up with the demand of players they have to place in repeative content to keep players having something to do. This is grinding and ToR will have some great VO and cut scenes but still needs grinding, specially since they need 2 million sub scribers to make a profit. Doesn't work too well if everyone completes the game and cancels their subscription after a week.
Not to mention we are talking about Sprind 2011 at the earliest, in a years time who knows what other games will be out and what sort of story will be in them by then. ToR could launch and already be dated and seem like a copy of other MMO's even more so if it gets delayed.

Yeah....this is why I said I wonder what the majority would say. Thought that was rather apparent. I also don't play games to visualize something amazing in my head, this is why I play games, so it can do it for me.
While a story driven MMO has "the end" and "wall" written all over it.
...
Indeed... I'm haveing a AoC flashback...
In SWTOR there is allot of talk about "seeing the story from the other side when you finish the main" and that to mee smells of "you finished the content.. reroll some alt and try again until you hit the wall".
I might be wrong tho... AoC made me paranoid about allot of MMO hype bull****.

So the key to an MMORPG is quest text? that's very interesting. Sorry, I'd like the option to decapitate the next quest giver that demands 20 (space) boars to be slain. I still pick the movie, voices are fun.

No: you write your own film and adventures... by playing an mmorpg freely in the content you are most interested in (be that crafting, fishing, raiding, PvP, ..)
No need to follow the prerecorded story telling of solo adventures.

absolutely noone on here complaing about end game content has a leg to stand on about haveing to re-roll with an alt... not a single level 80 wow player only has 1 character... and don't bother lying and saying u do
His point makes sense, which is why do we set the standard lower for MMOs than we do for a single player game. Technicial limitations are one thing (ie graphics), but storyline and gameplay are quite another.
It will be interesting to see if they can raise the bar while keeping the game a legitimate MMO and not just turning it into a online single player game.

Yeah?Me write my own film and adventures? forgive me while I laugh a little...
K, listen, you can sit there all you want and write in your little e-blog about your toon being a Saber Knight, who was once a slave child all you want. But for me, it's not acceptable. I want the option, get that, option, to kill things when they piss me off. Writing in some silly biography, or role-playing doesn't do it for me. I want a movie.
And you're lying to yourself if you believe doing laid out quests is plotting your own adventure. You have no control other then to not do it. k?

I think its pretty well established that SWTOR isn't going to be a sandbox environment. Might as well pack up your bags and head to a different game.
Reading is found to be boring by many, there is no visual emotion. Given the choice would you rather read the script of a movie or watch it? I'd rather watch it. But you know, people are different. I wonder what the majority would say.
I'd rather read, as I read faster than some voice actor can drone on. But then again, I finished high school. Most of todays gamers ( particularly those in the demographic this game is targeting ) are barely in high school and have ADD on top of it.

Not to mention we are talking about Sprind 2011 at the earliest, in a years time who knows what other games will be out and what sort of story will be in them by then. ToR could launch and already be dated and seem like a copy of other MMO's even more so if it gets delayed.
We know exactly what games are likely to be out, they are all listed on this site. THe only one that you might consider comparible in nature to what SWTOR is doing is The Secret World, which will also be fully voice acted.
Bioware's focus seems very misguided, and is typical of every game that has come out in the last 6 years, except for only a couple. That is, to offer a great 1-2month experience, then... no content, no longetvity, no reason to continue. When the story ends, the game ends. The only way to get around this is the a gear based raiding end game, or release a new strory driven expansion every two months that offers another 1-2 months worth of story.
MMORPGs bring out the achiever in the players and the players want to keep achieving, this has to be the focus of the game for it to flourish beyond its initial launch.
I see this game having alot of good initial box sales, then that's it. Especially with Cataclysm coming out right around the same time.
I certainly will buy it and love it for the month or two of content. I have loved every Bioware game ever made going back to Baldur's Gate. Maybe that is all they are hoping for. Initial box sales and a one time, one month subscription.
It just seems like such a wasted oppurtunity to me, These games have the potential to keep a player paying $15 a month for years and years. That is where the real money is made. This is speculation by me, we will see how it goes on release, but I am already viewing this game as a great 1-2 month single player story that happens to have other people online.
So the key to an MMORPG is quest text? that's very interesting. Sorry, I'd like the option to decapitate the next quest giver that demands 20 (space) boars to be slain. I still pick the movie, voices are fun.

I think its pretty well established that SWTOR isn't going to be a sandbox environment. Might as well pack up your bags and head to a different game.
His other game isn't that interesting apparently.
I'm not even sure he is asking for a sandbox, it would be totally retarded if he was. It almost sounds like he is promoting players adventuring without the fluff like voice acting. It's fine if he doesn't like it, he can turn on sub titles and mute his speakers. But to me, an adventure is not going ot an NPC with asking him what he wants and me declining or accepting and that being the end of it.
From people that have played the game. There are consquences for things you do, betraying a quest helper you talked to may result in something happening to you. It works just like ME2 from what I've heard.
Not to mention we are talking about Sprind 2011 at the earliest, in a years time who knows what other games will be out and what sort of story will be in them by then. ToR could launch and already be dated and seem like a copy of other MMO's even more so if it gets delayed.

ToR isn't even close to comparable with TSW. For one, TSW has no levels or classes.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
I think the key will be, will their enhanced storytelling add to the immersion and your gameplay experience, also when you play ToR from start with a second, a third and 4th alt? Then the leveling of alts would be less of a chore as in some other MMO's with your brain switched off.
If they can make the endgame at level cap feel like as if you're in an interactive Star Wars story too, then they could have a winner for the long term.
I think though that ANet has the best cards of them all, combining a dynamic world content with personal story, making the raising of alts altogether fresh and unique, while they cater to the e-sports crowd and pvp fanatics with the hot-joinable PvP tournaments and world vs world PvP. But I'm not dismissing Bioware yet, so far they have as good a track record with their games as Blizzard had before they came up with WoW.

It's about taking you by the nose and follow the path to the next video clip where you say "yes" " or "no" after which you will be "talking" to your companion NPC and will have a nice voice over AI talk with him and a new video will be uploaded for the next quest.
First 20 levels of AoC all over again. Too pessimistic ? Everything is ... pre recorded with voices and video clips.
I would say yes everything else on this planet is sandbox compared to this.
