While a story driven MMO has "the end" and "wall" written all over it.
...
Indeed... I'm haveing a AoC flashback...
In SWTOR there is allot of talk about "seeing the story from the other side when you finish the main" and that to mee smells of "you finished the content.. reroll some alt and try again until you hit the wall".
I might be wrong tho... AoC made me paranoid about allot of MMO hype bull****.
Did AoC even release with endgame content?
No it didn't have an endgame at realese... Not so sure it has one up till now.. But you could "finish" the story. And then get a trinket... And reroll i guess.
As i said i don't feel good about basing an MMO around a "storyline". Overall world story is great... But a "personal story" will have to come to an end someday... And no mather how epic it is you have to do something after it don't you, right?
Even if they add a "chapter" every expansion... How much time is there between expansions? You freez your character and wait for it while playing an alt? Maybe...But it doesn't sound fun to me.
Those are my fear concerning the "story" aspect. Maybe SWTOR wil cure them before launch when new information is available tho.

i'm not sure wether guys actually believe that the nonsense these haters are putting on these types of forums is facts from soe or if u really just aren't intelligent enough to actually understand complex paragraphs of more than 2 sentences. but u really should go on the official website and watch the videos from the devs ( cause obviously reading would be a problem) where they explain all about the story mode and free roaming mode options that u can choose from. the amount of false statements and half truths being thrown around here are a joke... especiallly since most of the crap is actually addressed on the official site

From my understand, there are two forms of quest, Class and group. Once the class quests are over, you move to group. Where these go I don't know, considering they're group I can only imagine they lead to bosses and that sort of thing. If it's comparable to classic WoW, they should be fine. If it's comparable to todays WoW, they may be in trouble. I didn't reroll or even play an alt in WoW till TBC, when everything was easy mode and I had nothing better to do.

to all of the negative complainers.. what exactly are u looking for? u all have decided this isnt the game for u even though ur points are based on no facts whats-so-ever, or half truths. What game are u looking for? Everything u are complaing about is just as true about the existing choices out there as it could possible be true about swtor. The difference is TOR isn't out yet... u haven't played it, and u obviously know very little about it.. so.. if this isnt for u... why r u so obsessed with it?
For me an mmo with a point to it would involve lots of players existing in a virtual world that changes around them based on their actions. I cant really see that happening when each of those players will simply be experiencing a pre-planned story. Sure they might get to make choices in those stories like a fighting fantasy book but whats "the point" if those stories are simply just that.....stories.
ArenaNet and Trion seem to have a better grip on what an mmo with a point should be with Guildwars 2 and Planes of Telara. I'm a lot more interested in what they are trying to do. Bioware simply seem to be replacing the text files we have been seeing for ages in mmos with voice overs and cinematics.......which is nice of course and certainly more entertaining but it hardly makes it an mmo with a point. Will the choices I make in my "copy" of a particular storyline mean anything for anyone else?
100% agree.
And the text files became even shorter and shorter over the years (because they are almost insignificant in on line play), while now you'll have to listen to them in minute long NPC voices.
Like I said in an earlier post: 90% of on line players don't even care to read 6 lines of text, now they'll need to listen to 6 minutes of NPC talk.
Great and immersive in solo games, "death" in on line games, because here the interaction with people count, not NPC talk.
Not really because like any intelligent person if you don't want story perhaps you shouldn't be playing SWTOR? For those who do want story it certainly will not be "death".
Hmm I agree with both of those statements. I personally dont think that mmos should be all about clicking through stories told to you through the scripted actions and words of npcs, although that aspect of mmos can be good for providing background to the game world to make it seem more lively. It does however detract from the multiplayer aspect of the game. Why even bother having other players around if we're just gonna follow a story told to us through npcs?
On the other hand its good to have this option for people that want it. I certainly think it will be more entertaining than the crap currently on offer. I just dont think its the way mmos should go.......which is ok though because someone has to provide this type of game so we can compare it to other types. If Bioware doesnt do it then someone else will.
I see it as a kind of scale. On the far left you have single player game design and individuals playing pre-scripted stories and generally having no to little effect on each other. With this type of game the game world never really changes. The only real change is in each persons personal progress. On the far right of the scale you have multiplayer game design where individuals make choices in the game world which changes things for everyone. With this type of game the game world is always changing. The game world is always different for everyone each time the log in.
SWTOR is on the far left and is a regression to the focused entertainment we already get from single player games. Guildwars 2 and Planes of Telara are on the far right and are a progression to transforming mmos into real multiplayer experiences. We need games like SWTOR though so we can see the difference between the two types more clearly. It seems pretty obvious that the far right end of the scale is where mmos truly belong.
The difference is TOR isn't out yet... u haven't played it, and u obviously know very little about it.. so.. if this isnt for u... why r u so obsessed with it?
Because ToR is more popular than Paris Hilton, and that means it must be sacrificed... for harvest.

I hope you're right tho and there will be no "wall" but a smooth transition to another "form" of story.

Don't know, but I specifically heard Neri (think it was him) claim these were the two forms of quests.
How about some optimism... I am looking forward to the game.. i think the story driven idea has lots of potential. i have watched the dev videos and think they are on to something refreshing. will it work? i dont know. but i gaurentee u i will be among those who find out. The idea that the developers have said out right that there is so much original content int this game that u will not ever get to play it all is something i think they should be pointing out. and with the promise of unique stories for each class reall makes any conversation of how the game ends irrelievent. we all played the other games, and we all rolled alts. the difference here is it will be like a whole new game for each one, not different guy, same kill ten spiders. cheer up haters, u can keep WOW, AoC, my little pony island adventures.... whatever game ur playing. if sw tor doesnt work out, there will always be another game coming down the tubes
Bioware's focus seems very misguided, and is typical of every game that has come out in the last 6 years, except for only a couple. That is, to offer a great 1-2month experience, then... no content, no longetvity, no reason to continue. When the story ends, the game ends. The only way to get around this is the a gear based raiding end game, or release a new strory driven expansion every two months that offers another 1-2 months worth of story.
MMORPGs bring out the achiever in the players and the players want to keep achieving, this has to be the focus of the game for it to flourish beyond its initial launch.
I see this game having alot of good initial box sales, then that's it. Especially with Cataclysm coming out right around the same time.
I certainly will buy it and love it for the month or two of content. I have loved every Bioware game ever made going back to Baldur's Gate. Maybe that is all they are hoping for. Initial box sales and a one time, one month subscription.
It just seems like such a wasted oppurtunity to me, These games have the potential to keep a player paying $15 a month for years and years. That is where the real money is made. This is speculation by me, we will see how it goes on release, but I am already viewing this game as a great 1-2 month single player story that happens to have other people online.
Why is it that people expect mmos to keep them entertained for years? Is it because they have a monthly subscription fee? I dont see anything wrong with just playing an mmo for a month or two just like any other games. I think the longest time I have spent playing mmos was with EQ1 and DAoC which I played for a bit over half a year each I think but that was only because it was all new and different for me back then. I just find the prospect of hanging around in the same game for years really boring. I would want to leave and see something new.

It's mostly because you build up so much in the game that it's hard to walk from it, even if you are finding less things you want to do on a daily basis. How many people keep EVE subbed just ot work on skills, even if they no longer play?
I know I did for a while until I made my decision to walk.
While it's certainly healthy to not get wrapped up in an MMO for years at a time, it just means you are going to spend more money on the next one, only to enjoy it for a month or so, and rinse/repeat. Plus, it's mostly the dev's that want you to pay/play for extended periods of time - it pays thier bills - but they still have a hard time figuring out what it is that keeps people around that long... even with other games giving prime examples.

What? People are no longer allowed to have objections on forums without being looked down upon? I want to play SW:TOR and at the same time can not agree with a lot of what the devs say and 'showoff'. You have your right to 'mindlessly' agree to anything SW:TOR devs release and everyone else has the right to "hide behind the excuse of debating". If you can't stand someone not agreeing with your every word, you shouldn't read forums imo.
Bioware is a good company and has the track record to say some of the things they have, however, saying all this WILL set them up for a massive fall if they fall short on any of their boasting. The fact remains that to date, SW:TOR has shown absolutely nothing that sets it apart from any upcoming MMO but has certainly talked a lot of trash.

OOO, I'm mindlessly agreeing. It's funny because you don't like my opinion, lol. Even though you're looking at it wrong....
There is a difference between sharing your opinion and then sharing that same exact opinion in ever SWTOR thread ever created on this site. Some of us actually keep up with the game, while some others just state opinion on non-sense they dreamed about the night before. It's actually kinda funny, at the same time annoying.
So yes, I'll 'mindlessly' listen to the dev quotes over your wonderland theories.
There is no point to this article. Comes across as aggrogant and heavy handed. They have been doing ok with releasing their tidbits of info and answering questions in the interviews. Their whole Our X > Y because we say so, is not something I expected coming from Bioware. Words mean little, actions do. I hope their actions stand up to their words.
So, they took a look at the first 20 levels of AOC, saw the praise it garnered from "some" people and decided that's what the world needed, more story telling throughout the entire leveling experience.
And they consider this to be the point of MMORPG gaming?
Seems like some folks never played EVE over there.

u posted a reply to my post which is one of many on this subject. i have absolutely no problem with dialog or debate. my post was in reference to the people who were bashing a game with no facts to back up their statements. they put out bullshit as if it's a fact and it creats some much confusion that real information becomes hard to find. i'm not talking the game up, i state over and over again that i am only optimistic and looking forward to the game. i state points from the official releases to back up why i'm excited. as far as boasting, u are quite wrong my friend. in fact, info coming out of SWTOR's official devs is far and few between. The fact that we know what we do is only because it would be bad for business if they kept us locked out completely. don't mistake opinion pieces and forum posts for actual game info. once again.... i'm not against debate and discussion, just pointless negativity from uninformed people. i dont go on other game blogs and bash them, i'm not interested in playing them, so i leave them alone.

I think you're stretching a bit too far there. You are trying to hate the haters a bit too much. People arent scared of or threatened by any game. However a LOT of people have become extremely tired of the way mmos have been developing over the years. They seem to have been becoming more restricted and "streamlined" as time goes on. They are becoming less like multiplayer games and more like single player games with the option to play co-operatively with friends.
SWTOR's heavy focus on scripted stories appears to be another step in this direction, which is why I think a lot of people view it negatively. They want real multiplayer games where all the players can push and pull each other in different directions, sending each other on dynamic changing adventures in a game world that is always different and fresh because it is sensitive to the players actions. They want something that hasnt been done yet basicly.....or at least done well.
There isnt anything wrong with saying negative things about the game anyway. If thats what they think then thats what they think. Whether its positive or negative is irrelevant. I dont really think SWTOR is going to be a great step in the right direction for mmos myself as I would rather see virtual interactive worlds rather than multiple choice stories but thats just me. I'm still interested in seeing how SWTOR turns out though. Afterall the simple option of multiple choice is a big step up from what we currently have........a text file with no choice to make at all other than accept or decline. Its actually amazing that simple multiple choice has been absent from most mmos for so long actually.
neon is a great example of debate on a subject. good, well thought out opinion. i too am looking forward to the next generation game. the science channel had a special on it a while back. virtual reality is going to be the new crack...watch

You're right, Funcom does have a record.
Let's see, Anarchy Online still goin' at 10 years old soon, content still goin', new engine and artwork a few months or less down the road.. AoC just released an expansion which even has release critics praising the game again.
Funcom's record is bad launches and then making great games from them. So putting up with a shaky launch knowing that the game will be continually developed, to me, is a lot better than a company ONLY known for singleplayer games and praising themselves before they even release their first mmo.
Edit: My name is just fine. At least I'm not 104th in line.

Because ToR is more popular than Paris Hilton, and that means it must be sacrificed... for harvest.

I thought they were somehow tied to eachother... I mean the two quest types. As if you want to do it with a group you can... if not do it solo and the dificulty level scales... I again might be wrong.
I hope you're right tho and there will be no "wall" but a smooth transition to another "form" of story.

Good question, why are they here. They'll hide behind "IT'S A FORUM SO WE'RE DEBATING". My theory is they're here because this game is threatning in some way to them. They're scared basically, why? I do not know. Maybe ToR is a bully for their future MMO. There is even the possibility that they revel in the negativity they introduce on everything. My bet is the negativity part.
Maybe all of the above. Maybe they're ronery?
that was britney spears.... but i get ur point... touche!!!
I would want to leave and see something new.
i agree with u neon..the idea of doing grinding for the sake of grinding kills me..... keep it fresh, or i'm not going to be paying for long
It's mostly because you build up so much in the game that it's hard to walk from it, even if you are finding less things you want to do on a daily basis.

Seems like some folks never played EVE over there.

dear clock:
u posted a reply to my post which is one of many on this subject. i have absolutely no problem with dialog or debate. my post was in reference to the people who were bashing a game with no facts to back up their statements. they put out bullshit as if it's a fact and it creats some much confusion that real information becomes hard to find. i'm not talking the game up, i state over and over again that i am only optimistic and looking forward to the game. i state points from the official releases to back up why i'm excited. as far as boasting, u are quite wrong my friend. in fact, info coming out of SWTOR's official devs is far and few between.
