Hope Ghana is going to pull-it out today, I believe it is the only remaining african team with a slight chance of success.

    ...in the meantime in England:

With the way the US is playing, they might as well pack their bags because they'll be going home.

Amazing match! I was on the edge of my seat through out the whole thing!

With all those unwarranted offisides calls against them recently, the US deserved this win, they really showed a lot of heart.

Holy...talk about a nail biter...did you see the crowd when the camera went to them.  People were eating their scarves, chewing on vuvuzuelas and just really into it...neither side conceding defeat and playing right up to the bitter end.   Then from out of nowhere a critical pass, a kick, rebound and wham!

    GOOOAAAL!

That is futbol and that is why people all over the world love it!

US wins 1-0 in a mean game vs Algeria who was there to win and almost did - they played a great game.

Congrats to England for their win in their match against Slovenia.  England won 1-0.   So US and England make it to the next round.   God I love this World Cup - it's exciting!

Yay we're(Eng) through but damn, we came second. But we probably don't deserve to come first after our performance against Algeria. Oh well at least we're through, hopefully Ghana win their group so we can play them next round! Grats to USA.

heh, I wanted to reach through the TV and choke the ref when he called offsides against the US when they scored the first time. That would've made this a more comfortable match.

They were showing Bill Clinton watching the game in the stands and close to the end of the match he couldn't take his eyes off the field, he was pretty much biting his nails. Never took him to be a huge futbol fan.

One thing I have to give to both teams, Algeria and the US is that neither side took any dives, trying to get a free kick out of the ref. They played a strong game without any theatrics. Much respect to both teams.

I love futbol, it's the greatest sport in the world

I hope they don't get executed when they get back home :/

Don't kid yourself, that whole North Korea team will misteriously not make the flight back home as they all defected to just about anywhere other then North Korea.  I'm pretty sure Kim Jong realized that at least half of the people he sent aren't coming home because they once again can decide for themselves image

They would be crazy to go back.I think one of Saddam Hussein's sons, cant remember offhand which one, was famous for executing soccer players who dissapointed him.

    That was Ude.

Back on topic. That was an exciting match that really shouldn't have been that close. Is this what officiating is like in soccer? Another crappy call goes against the U.S. to take points off the board. Seems ridiculous to have so many bad calls when these are supposed to be the best refs in the sport.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Seabass, the answer is - this is FIFA.   They are the ruling body of international futbol.   Many people have tried to get some of the officiating changed over the years but hve failed.   Until the changes are made, yes what you are seeing is pretty much how a futbol match is officiated.    However, with that being said, the rulings we've been seeing by some judges in the WC games are very questionable.   Some are just outright bad calls.   FIFA knows this and tries to do the right thing - not always - but sometimes.   FIFA overturned a yellow card handed out by a judge because clearly it was a wrong call by the offical.

Both my teams got through England and USA

Epic game Sunday  ...England vs Germany

Agreed Seabass.. In fact it's no secret that many of the international officials prior to the World Cup have been sited for corruptions..  The futbol aka soccer industry is littered with them unfortunately  :(  I recently saw a 15 minutes news cast addressing this issue, where the industry is trying to correct it without the public actually seeing it..  Just like in the US v Slovania game.. Same ref issues a clearly bogus 2nd yellow card on a US player that also comes up with a phantom foul that dissallowed a US goal.

What concerns me moreso is what is FIFA doing about it?  Each official AFTER a game "HAS" to fill out and file a incident report to FIFA why a yellow card was given and on whom, and why a goal is disallowed and who commited the foul.. etc etc.. NO such report has been filed to this date by said referee, or if so.. FIFA has not publically released it or addressed it.. WHY?

What we do know if that FIFA did say that particular offical will never referee another game.. Interesting to say the least..

PS.. Best comment ever made concerning refs I heard recently during the Women's NCAA softball world series.. "Best game is one you didn't even know the officals were there"... HOW so true if you think about it..

Italy is going to get knocked out in the first round and Italy is the former WC Champions.   Slovakia  is WTF pwning Italy.   2-0 right now.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Wow..did any of you watch the last of the Italy vs Slovakia game.  OMG that was intense.   Italy finally started playing in about the middle of the 2nd half.   To little to late and Slovakia takes the match 3-2.   Great game!

If there's anything that can transform soccer into a major sport in the United States, it's this.  The fact that an otherwise dweeb, Landon Donovan, can marry a hot chick like Bianca Kajilich.

Futbol players in most countries are treated like rock stars - in case you didn't know that.  I am not to sure that that is the case here in the US accept for maybe a few.

Anyway!  OMG Japan played a sweet game against Denmark.   Netherlands got pasted Cameroon.    Fantastic WC so far.  Can't wait until tomorrow - Portugal vs Brazil!  OMG that should be a great game!

  • SircaSirca Member UncommonPosts: 110

Really happy that JP managed to make it along with USA, both teams show some really good spirit and physical conditions. Technically they seem to be a step behind majors such as BR or AR but they do have a good chance to reach semi-finals.

Can't wait for Germany - England, THE classic which I hope will be followed by another epic encounter:  Argentina - England (provided England beat Germany and Argentina do so with Mex).

US game should be interesting.. On paper the US team  is the better squad and should win.. BUT.. we all have seen in years past in any sport how American teams underperform in international play.. lol  Plus with 2 phantom calls in games back to back, Is this a prelude to what's next?  I sure as hell hope not..  If there is 1 MORE bad call as we've seen in the last 2 games I would strongly recommend that the US withdraw their bid for WC, and remove all funds that are dumped into FIFA as well.. Until they get their act together..

Until FIFA agrees with the usage of video (which they will never do)  no doubt we will face more bad calls from the referee in the futur. They have been studying the possibility to add a dedicated referee right behind each team's goal yet nothing.

Hopefully as we move on in the WC there should be more "professional" referees, hopefully not the ones from AE or Mali...
