I like WoW but I do want something different. Anyone whos into MMOs has generally been playing WoW for 5 years on and off. I wish it was more Sandbox and pvp oriented but what are you gonna do?

I never said it had to be like WOW, i said why is it bad to be like WOW? If people compares you with the best well its good, not bad. If the compares you to the worst, now your in trouble. But somehow the users of this forum thinks that being like WOW is negative ... i dont get it.

In sports if you are compared to the best team wont you be happy ? Probably more than if you are compared to the worst team. same thing here. Paradox is everywhere.

Well, that's part of the point of my OP.  In some ways it isn't bad to be like WoW.  Responsive controls, a largely good interface (certainly as far as skill bars and keybindings go), and other things are solid features.

On the other hand, making an exact clone of WoW is a fail move, since people will just play the original game.  That's why the other part of my OP was emphasizing how ToR is different from WoW.  People aren't upset, I don't think, when people say "that feature is similar to WoW's" they are upset when someone says "the game is just like WoW in space" or implies it.  Also, it is rather silly to say things are "just like WoW" if they are conventions of almost all MMOs.  Being like WoW is at least half the time a comparison that just isn't helpful.

I do agree that although there is an element of truth in what Bioware said, using the term "just like WoW" can leave them open to attack because people often distill and generalise statements like that to mean "its a WoW Clone", when in actual fact that isn't true.

We still don't know enough yet to form an accurate assessment as to how "different" SWTOR will be from the usual formula.  The extra depth in the storylines may make all the difference.  On the other hand, it may just be seen as a superficial and transparent skin over the standard formula with not much else added.  Although I'm a big advocate for more depth in lore and storylines in MMO's, I'm hoping there's a bit more to the game than that.  Hopefully Bioware have looked at the competition and recognised their weaknesses to exploit them (such as a good crafting / economic synergy).

    But time will tell.

"Failure to kill WoW is not a failure for a new MMO."

While SOE made mistakes, or should I say, THE biggest mistake ever; one mistake doesn't define a company.  They have their good points.  Despite your feeling about Everquest, the game was a major success for a long time.  Does it compare to WoW's success?  No.  WoW is an abnormality in the MMO market.  It doesn't happen often and will probably never happen again.  The general consensus is that 250k+ subscriptions is a "success".  However, the trick is maintaining that.  Take Warhammer.  At the gate, it was a success.  However misteps and failures on Mythic's part have made the game a failure.

Will SWTOR kill WoW?  No.  Will it be an enjoyeable alternative to a bland game?  Yes.

Just for the record, I don't hate WoW.  I just don't enjoy it as much as I used to.  I need something "new".

    Raquelis in various games
    Played: Everything
    Playing: Nioh 2, Civ6
    Wants: The World
Anticipating: Everquest Next Crowfall, Pantheon, Elden Ring

Tank - Healer - Support: The REAL Trinity

To be honest I dont think 250k is a success anymore. I think any MMO developer who manages to only get 250k after WoW got alot more people interested in MMOs will be truly dissapointed. 1 million should be the target for most high budget MMOs. I suspect kotor will get 1 million maybe 2.
