Basically summing up what I'm currently thinking about this game. Its a comicstyled Star Wars with voice over and story thats about it. Can't believe people are too stupid to read the OP DID listen to some of the dialogues but decided to skip them at stome point because...you know...after all it was a limited demo!
I mean seriously does a Sith need a guy telling him that he's evil and so are his actions? Knowing you are a Sith = you are an evil badass = doing very bad things.
Fully voice over story is cool for sure but mark my words the endgame will be the longtime deciding factor so if Bioware can't deliver there they won't be able keeping 1000k subs or what so ever.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
You skimmed through the dialogue? I also skimmed through the article!
Bioware always gave a lot of importance to its dialogues. It's fine not to test as thoroughly on their strongest points I guess. But still, if you gonna write an article about any game, take the full dosage first. Both out of respect to the game you're discussing, as well the people who will be reading.
my two cents
Other than that, ye I think killing slugs doesnt sound very exciting

A shame that the person had to rush through the dialogue, you should stick to FPS games if you don't want a story mate.
While I am a fan of Star Wars, I am not a fan of TOR. BUT, most of the time, MMORPG.com give great reviews and this is no exception. The whole point of the review was a hands-on and basic functionality review of the Sith warrior class itself, not the storyline dialogue.

Just because it wasn't a rose-tinted review in favor of the game, doesn't automaticly mean it's useless. Unfortunate for the TOR fanboi's, which btw, as I indicated, there is a difference between a SW and a TOR fanboi. One follows canon and the other doesn't, which is ironic that the TOR fanboi's are whining about wanting others to read the hollow dialogue in the first place, lol.
This is a new low for article writers on here. Take an MMO, skip over the elements that set it apart from the rest and say "well...meh.....it's just like all the others".
I know you only had a limited time to try it but for gods sake, at least view the game objectively based on that limited time. How can you assess the "bigger picture" if you just focus on one element of it? Seriously, anyone else who came on these forums and said "I played it for 10 mins, did one quest and found it just like WoW" would be torn into. And rightfully so.
> The dialogue. . .[options]. . .seemed a bit tedious.
> . . .story building element to the game is great from a single player perspective
> killing slugs is not my idea of being a Sith bad-ass.
> other players will know not to mess with you if you have on certain stuff, I suppose it is the same as WoW.
> In the end I found the Sith Warrior lacking.
> . . .as a starting quest and starting area I was bored quickly when killing giant slugs.
> . . .The skills were ok, with standard light saber attacks and some jumps and blasting effects, but again I fear for my abilities when it comes to ranged opponents.
> . . .just seemed like another MMO in my book.
No better impression than other recent reports we've been reading.
How many more objective, hands-on reports and Bioware release information do we need to receive before it's realized by others that SWTOR is shaping up to be nothing more than an wonderfully developed single-player game attempting to be massively-multiplayer game by emulating World of Warcraft with lightsabers in a pve, highly scripted and static world?
Origina See, your problem is that you suffer from a lack of imagination. While there are some people here who are number crunchers on the race to level cap and epic gear, there are also others like me who don't NEED to have the game give us a story. We want the game to give us a rich world and the things we need to create our own story. One of the many characters I played in Star Wars Galaxies was a Master Ranger. This skillset was almost all about RP and Community, because there was nothing "uber" about them in combat, even when combined with a skills like Master Rifleman. What we could do, is kick arse at PVE, track mobs for hunting parties and set up some awesome camps for healing, shelter and socializing. I built a character, and a reputation for being an awesome Ranger, and contract hunter. I imagined my character as an outdoors survivalist who would just walk out into the outback of the planets with no mount or vehicle. I would lead people on great safari hunting adventures, better than any quest I have ever got from an NPC. I would set up camps out in the middle of nowhere and just wait to see who would stumble over to my campfire for some healing and good conversation. I was often invited on many other adventures while doing this. I would also use the Ranger related crafting skills I had and another crafting toon, so I could set up survival shops stocked with tents, foods, meds, camps, and other things adventurers could buy and use while out creating their own stories within the game. My homes were decorated from floor to ceiling as Hunting Lodges which were opened to the public. I often received in-game emails and tells from people who told me how awesome they looked, and thank yous. As a contract hunter, I had a huge network of crafters as clients who would ask me to hunt down rare items they needed to make high end foods, weapons, armor and meds. I would get on the SWG forums and post ads, and I had a mailing list of people in game I would contact when I came across high-stat resources. I was one of the go-to guys on my server, and I loved it. I didn't need a story or a scripted dialog, because I made my own adventure. I was not Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader or any other iconic hero, and I didn't want to be. Please do not sit back and think that just because some of us oppose the idea of scripted quests, dialog and forced story, that we suffer from any lack of imagination or the want of a good deep game to play.
Nothing wrong with wanting to play sandbox games. And if there was a real sandbox with a real virtual world setting to play. I would love to play it. But TOR will be a themepark with an optional set of rides. Erickson in an E3 interview did say that there will be sandbox elements in TOR. He said you could run to the other side of Alderon with friends just to see what was there. And the dev's want to make sure you are rewarded for that style of play. That there will be content there for you to interact with without quests. You could be a hunter and guide on one of the planets if you want in TOR. But you have to jump through the hoops to get there probably. The story quests for each class is different with about 200 hours of story for each class. You build your class in RPG style through the story arc and choices you make. This is not creating your own story. But the worlds will be set up so you could explore without questing and have it be worth while using your imagination as you said.
I will be playing this game because of the story and the fact it is Bioware. But it is not the only reason. End game is going to have more options than other MMO's from what they have said. This is an unrealized statement obviously. We don't know what it will be yet or that they can even get their servers to handel the players in mass. More questions need to be answered, but I will try the game regardless. And reviews like th OP's are needed regardless of what we think. The more opinion from different types of gamers can only increase our own knowledge of the game. We can relate to each tyle depending on our own style.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore

The problem is that he didn't even review the CLASS in an objective manner, let alone anything else about the game. He just pointed out a potential issue and said "I got a lightsaber, did one quest, not happy about the class".
Seriously, how can he possibly jump to such conclusions based on so little experience of the whole game?
Why bother writing such an article in the first place, when its obvious he didn't have much time to actually assess the class and the game with a little more objectivity. In other words, this article was pointless and full of pre-conceived bias.
UMMM the sith inquisitor class is what you wanted to play if you were trying to replicate Darth Maul not the Sith warrior.
That could definatly be a huge part of the issue. Sith Warrior is more after Vader. Just so you know for the next gaming expo you played the wrong class for the play experience you were looking for.

Don't you feel that it is a bit odd that in the world of E3 mega-hype that their 'showcased' quest would be killing slugs? If that's the one they thought would 'wow' their audience, I'm a little surprised.
As for this article, the guy told you exactly his time constraints, and exactly his impression after 15 min. Because he told me his limitations, I can take the article for what it is worth. And for me, and many other players, how someone feels with a class in their first 15 min and the quality of the first quest you do make a HUGE difference to longterm commitment.
But that being said, I always see for myself, I don't ever let what I read dictate what games I will or will not try. And if I don't like the sith warrior, then and only then will I say "I agree with Garrett" and if I play and love the class, then and only then will I say "I disagree with Garrett".
And that's as deep as my emotions can run on an article like this. But many in this thread are taking such offense, it borders on fanboism. Get ahold of yourself, cuz one guy didn't like one class in a game that hasn't been released, it isn't going to bring the game to its knees. It will release. It will release with huge numbers - at this point it doesn't matter what the press is, just as long as it is press.

I ain't what you would call a fanboi. I'd take the same opinion about his "article" if Garrett had performed a 15 Minute preview on any other MMO. The same principles still apply.
Now granted, Bioware should have had the foresight to allow the media to see the game at various points in order to let people get a better "feel" as to how things progress in the game. And anyone who was more objective than the OP may have critisised Bioware for that in their article. For whatever reason, Bioware didn't do that, and thus such an oversight only serves to encourage these kind of articles.
In Biowares defense though, its not surprising about the lack of depth on the very first quests in an MMO. All MMO's are like that. Bioware are hardly guilty of that on their own. Bioware were showing the very start of the game, which isn't necessarily indicative of the game as a whole. The same could be said of movies or books. But, instead of trying to remain objective about the subject matter, the OP was more focused on his opinion of the whole Sith Class and his pre-conceived idea on how it should be based on the very start of the game. The start of the game is hardly the right place to be assessing a whole class based on only a few minutes worth of play, wouldn't you agree?
Like I said before, had a forum viewer posted the same statements about ANY MMO based on 15 mins of play, he would be torn to bits on these forums.
As for me, I personally have no investment in SWTOR and therefore don't take such "previews" personally. I hope it does well, but I'm not blind to the fact that SWTOR isn't exactly innovative and should be viewed more as a stepping stone in the evolution of MMO's. However, the OPs article was not very informative other than telling us about his pre-concieved notions about how a class should be and then critisising the class based on the first 15 mins of play into the game.
In short, the article was hardly what you would call "objective". And that point would stand regardless if this article had been written about any class in ANY other MMO.
To quote a new mantra from a writer at Massively.com - Endgame begins at level 1.

Obviously you don't get it. Sad. But it's gotta make ya chuckle though. lol
If you think people will go for the story and play the game the way it is intended, you are wrong.
This same vision permeated in the WAR Beta. All the Keep Sieges and ORVR was fun because people participated. When the game released, a vast majority of players sped through the PvE content, skipping T1-T3 ORVR completely. The path of least resistance and greatest reward will be the path taken by the majority of players. I don't care if you're the biggest RP'er and Bioware fanboy, your rose glasses won't change the shade of that.
Why are people even trying to defend that the game offers all these revolutionary ideas (besides trying to make the most immersive story) when the developers themselves often are quoted to be saying that many of the features are "just like WoW"?
my only problem with the review is that the reviewer did not utilizze the tools that the game was given. Granted, he did have little time. But when you are playing a game that revolves around a story, and not taking part (due to lack of time) in the tool which is driving it forward. Its like given a spatula, oven and cake mix to create a great dessert, but instead you take the spatula and try to cut down a tree. It's a Bioware game, imagine playing dragon age, mass effect, or KOTRO without getting immersed in the story. It just doesnt "feel" right.
We all know the game's combat will not revolutionize the genre. It is following more traditional methods. We know this already. And the warrior gameplay is not like Darth Maul's style, as stated above.

I agree completely. If the scripted dialog system slows people down too much, they will figure out a way around it or just ignore those quests if they can find a faster way to level, even if it means grinding mobs. Once the quests start showing up on Wiki sites, people will skip right past the dialog and just make choices.
In KOTOR there was no reason to be in a hurry. In an a post-WOW MMORPG, hurrying to level cap is all most people know.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
A point that is missed is that the opening part of any game for the first few levels is merely a tutorial. Not everyone is like us hard core MMO gamers with over a decade of experience, this could be many gamers' first take on an MMO, so they need to learn a couple basics before becoming heroic. I suppose an option to skip the existing "tutorial" levels would be something to consider, but it's BioWare, it's a story from start to finish and they want us involved in the entire thing. I'll play this game no matter what, just like everyone here posting in these threads will also, form conclusions later, for now just take articles like this with a grain of salt, not everyone likes the same games and play styles as you or I.

Not all of us play MMOs like they are some kind of competition to get to max level. Nor do all of us want to take the 'path of least resistance'.
Now, I am not claiming to speak for a majority of people, but you seem to want to speak for everyone so I thought I'd patiently thank you for not speaking on my behalf.
'Rose colored glasses', LOL, so then yours are a browner shade?
If anything, this review demonstrates that if a company is going to release a "playable demo", then it's in their best interest to release the bad#@$ parts of the game. Don't give someone "slugs" to kill and review. Heck, what's with all the lame starter enemies in these games anyways? Just because we're "level 1" means we have to be wimps that fight bugs and birds?
We could always start the game off fighting bad#@$ enemies, and just find even more bad#@$ enemies along the way.
Did I mention it's a bad idea to release a demo that doesn't highlight the bad#@$?

I like WoW and hope the features are like it. Not exactly, of course, more an evolution of them, but there none the less. WoW is the most fun I've had since FFXI in an MMO, it's high time some newer MMOs brought the FUN back.

Agreed, dont know why so many of these companies have been relying on demos of lower level / starter areas to showcase the game, especially at conventions. Most of us will be past that stuff in a matter of hours / days and never have that same experience again unless we play alts. They should really focus more on showcasing mid-level to endgame stuff where most of us will be spending the most time.

Exactly...And I do think you speak for the majority...Silent as it is...
What some "hardcore" dorks don't want to accept is the fact that BioWare and Lucas are building this Game around the Casual Gamer, both MMO Gamer and RPG Gamer...They are looking for the majority and those Folks are going to eat up the Story, and the cool looking Gear, and the Force Powers, etc...These Casual Players simply don't sweat the same details as the "rush-to-the-end" crowd...At least not for a while they don't. They have Jobs, Families, and a ton of distractions. They are going to go at their own pace and have a blast along the way with their Friends...They'll watch the hardcore geeks and just chuckle a bit and go on...
Capture the Casual PvE crowd and you have successful Game...Add in some good End Game and PvP and you have a bigger Game...But if you're looking for a million Subs or more the Casual Gamer is a must...And that's who this Game is being built for first and foremost...It just is...
This is a very poor review considering that whoever wrote this did not have the time to do a little research on the game itself, first of all any class with a lightsaber gets to deflect SOME ranged attacks, second of all, it has been announced that sith warrior will have a "Charge like" skill where the sith warrios jumps towards their enemy.
My question is why would they send this guy, just by saying that he skipped the dialogue makes no sense, when it has been stated that the choices you make in this game will matter, so you have to be mentally prepare to listen/read a lot in this game, specially when you are a Staff member and your opinion has a big impact in the community, I am not saying that is wrong to skip the dialogue as player, if that is your thing good for you, however if you are reviewing something you want to see everything.
Last thing, do you really expect to be killing BIG bad ass aggressive monster at the beginning of the game ?, this game will probably have people that have never play MMO in their life, having aggressive monster at the beginning of the game is just not smart and maybe if you had read the quest you would find out the reason of why you were killing those slugs or maybe not, but we will never know because you didn't bother to read it.
Not defending the game, I do not know if the game is going to be a good or a bad game at this moment, however I can tell this was a bad review.

Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
what a coincidence!

Lmao

Obviously you don't get it. Sad.
While I am a fan of Star Wars, I am not a fan of TOR. BUT, most of the time, MMORPG.com give great reviews and this is no exception. The whole point of the review was a hands-on and basic functionality review of the Sith warrior class itself, not the storyline dialogue.
That part of the game has been rehashed and written about dozens of times already. If anyone is looking to crucify anything without looking at the facts, it's the flamers in this thread harassing the OP. He did his job and skipped the part of the hands-on that wasn't relevant to the class functionality itself.

Just a little.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
my only problem with the review is that the reviewer did not utilizze the tools that the game was given.
X
