Your post above seems to point in the direction of the latter.
I'm sorry, I didn't know your opinion was the right one.

Sound good?
Why is this still a valid argument? I have already posted my first and last name as well as my Facebook. The fact that you're too lazy to search for it is not of my concern.
It's not an argument actually. Perhaps you seek conflict? Put it in your signature, might as well since you support RealID which will make sure your identity is in every post. So what size TV do you have? How new is your computer. We want to make sure all the "important" info is available after all ;-)

So it all comes down to fear again, sigh.
I saw the post about some kid that stabbed a guy because that guy killed him in Counter Strike, yet people use that as a valid reason for people to get angry when they play PvE. You can grief like mad in-game and still post on the forums without anyone knowing it's you, so what's the problem again? If you post on the forums and you're afraid that someone might look you up and your Facebook is the first they get to see, then I don't see the problem there either. As a standard the information displayed to strangers on Facebook is limited to a picture, unless you choose to reveal your address and the likes, but then you're the security problem. If your name is the only thing that divides a person from knowing who you are, then you need to reconsider that what you've been posting on the internet may not be too smart since your information pops up with the first Google attempt.
That guy represents many just like him. Those who, unfortunately for the sane majority, tend to perpetuate the fallacy that gamers are unhinged psychopaths. A fallacy about the masses, sure, but not completely false about a small part of gaming's population.
More to the point: You want that guy and those like him knowing your real name after you beat him on a roll for epic loot?
Yeah, me neither.
Thats what a lot of people is trying to explain. Not everybody take the game as a game. Given the chance, some people will take it to real life. And the RealID thing, the real name in forums, and the exploits discovered in WoW LUA to discover your real name from in game are just tools for this crazy guys. Sure most of them will just get angry and then forget it but a small amount will not forget it, they are gonna get angry about you and talking about 11 million players is going to be a really big amount of crazy guys searching for real life info to take revenge or stalk you... or your girlfriend, or your daughter, or your son or your wife.
The problem is not giving away your personal information, (in my opinion is bad enought and is pobably against some laws in a lot of countries) the problem is your name linked to your in game character, thing we already know is not hard to obtain.
This sums it up nicely, especially since you think someone has to reveal their address in order for that person to get it. I still don't see your name in your signature, by the way. I am sure it was just an oversight right

If people actually bothered to read what I've been writing instead of just following the sheepherder, you'd realise that I'm against Real-ID because I have a problem with Facebook - I find it pointless to say the least. What I'm also against is people that are thoroughly convinced that people are out to get them because they posted something bad on a forum.
''They're out there'' is what people are saying, and you bet their are. But by being afraid of them is just letting them win, especially when it's the case with trolls that are 'going to kill you'.
They dont think people are out to get them. They however are very aware that given the right person it could happen and are not delusional to think the world is full of good well adjusted people. These games do draw a good amount of freaks. There have been way to many stories over the years of people killing their kids, themselves and others over a game like WOW to go without notice. Not everyone is pot smoking paranoids. Some just see the world for what it is.
I've heard of so many cases that it can be counted on two hands if not on one hand, and most of them originate from China, the place with one of the highest suicide rates.

You know what bothers me, people who makes assumptions and insult others because they disagree with you. You. You've got two heads, one supporting the idea and the other one say no you don't. You're all over the map and pretty rude about it. I bet you have assumed I even play WoW. I don't. I haven't. I've never played WoW. I don't have to be afraid of 11 million people out there, one or two of which probably live down the road from me, from doing something drastically stupid because of what I post on a Blizzard forum because I am not on the Blizzard forum. I am also not so naive that I don't think in the blink of an eye, one bad decision can change someone's world forever. You want to be an elitist, someone who runs around the boards calling people lazy, throwing insults while saying you have nothing to hide because you buried your name in a post amongst hundreds of posts while shouting don't be afraid. Guess what. People are worried for a reason, a very good reason. Most of those fears will never be realized, but it only takes one to be tragic. Think about that, for a moment if you can. One bad encounter, one wrong decision made easier because of this policy is one too many.

How exactly am I being rude again, by not agreeing with you? I don't play WoW either but I bet you assume that so you can classify me as a blind fanboy.
People have a right to be afraid, they also have a right not to use the forums.
Let me make it clear for you: I am against Real-ID in the sense of Facebook, I am against scaremongering because it's uncalled for, I'm not against having your name displayed on the forums (however, I'm against the reason for it which is not to combat trolls that much, it's the implementation of Facebook).
There is no point in taking it further since I see you as being on the border of attacking me personally, while you see me as rude. Let's just leave it at that and agree to disagree.

I never called you fanboy did I? Go back and read the way you are talking to people and tell me that is not rude. But hey, this only strengthens my point. You think you are not rude. I think you are. Suddenly, you're posting something someone else doesnt' like, and you don't even know it (although I think you actually do in this case). It is so easy to get someone riled up when you are not standing there talking to them, using the visual cues we use in our lives everyday to read how our communication is being received. Most of the way we communicate as a species is visual, and it is completely lost on forums and internet conversations.
As a female gamer, I've had enough people go ape-shit after just finding out I am a woman as it is. The last thing I need is for them to get even stranger than they already are.

Without going down the pretty pink path of paranoia I will assume that Blizzard's stated reasons for wanting to use realID in the forums and the games isn't a hidden agenda for some other nefarious plan(s) they might have.
The problem is that the solution to the problem of rude behavior in the fourms that they propose is just inappropriate. There is no reason not to have some sort of ID check or other method of controlling your forum posters but there really isn't a need to make that information public. This is bit like using a sledgehammer on baby chicks because their peeping annoys you, effective in solving the peeping problem but a bit rough on the baby chicks.

It's pretty obvious to me that this is in correlation with the Facebook partnership they made.
By having your first and last name displayed (still waiting on how people are going to know the difference from all the John Doe's) it will be easier to moderate the forums, because people won't be using alts. But here is where my appraisal of Blizzard stops. Like it's been said before (even in the past, as in years ago) they could simply associate your forum account with one(1) nickname on the forums, and that would have the same effect. But then again, they're trying to cater to the Facebook users and their Farmville mindset frightens me. The day WoW is turning into Farmville (not in a literal sense) is the day I'm going to stop playing WoW. I've heard Warcraft IV is coming out any way ( as well as their new MMO), so it's not of a big concern that I will be without a game.
Without going down the pretty pink path of paranoia I will assume that Blizzard's stated reasons for wanting to use realID in the forums and the games isn't a hidden agenda for some other nefarious plan(s) they might have.
It isn't paranoia, it is cynicism, and well placed cynicism in my opinion. It is cynical, but also entirely rational, to understand that corporations care for nothing so much as that next vein of profit. The anti-trolling spin is just a thin premise for what is otherwise a massive money-making collusion with the social networking giant, who, it might be wise to point out, came under recent federal investigation for making the little-known security options as difficult as possible to find.
The quoted speaks of an abiding trust in an entity to whom which you are nothing more than an ATM that can type on a keyboard. The pretty pink path of paranoia has turned into the nefarious navy blue nexus of naiveté.
wow lol now i realize why every one made a huge deal about it at first i was like o no big deal it doesnt really matter but now i see u can get a shit load of info on someone by just there name
I just reallized that out of all the games that proclaimed to be the "WoW Killer"....WoW was the WoW killer all along!
Go Go REALID!!
Imma go play some EvE, you know, where the people who own the game aren't douchebags and try to ruin a good thing.
Everyone join in and hate on Blizzard. They are so EVUL!1!! Baaaaaaad Blizzard. Trying to add social networking in a game! Oh, i'm soo safe on the internet because I use a nickname. If I didn't have my nickname I would probably be dead now. Killed by some lunatic wow gamer I raided ICC25 with.

Sorry but the EvE people are doing a pretty good job of pooping in their own sandbox at the moment. While I like the game the elitist attitude of some of the players and most of the developers has gotten old but it is their game and they are entitled to their opinion and to run it the way they want. I however can and have gone elsewhere but if you are having fun in the game then great and it is certainly worth a look for anyone that hasn't tried it before.
I'm still weighing this up. Is it really bad..? Facebook use real-life names or myspace- whats so different?
At least none of my mates uses them with real life name. They use aswell nick and only real friends (i dont mean the fake friends like gather 1000 friends crap) know their real name and got access to their private info.
And besides that every one can decide if they want to use it on facebook or myspace, but in WoW never mentioned anything before that at the end you will have to play by using your real names ... people didnt have a choice. Now only choice is there dont use forum or post under your real name.
I'm still weighing this up. Is it really bad..? Facebook use real-life names or myspace- whats so different?
Well in facebook we get to select who see's what. We can also use nicknames or completely fake names if we want. Also in order to do a search for my name, you need to have my name allready.
Blizzard would give you the name making searching a lot easier.

Jesus. Is it your job to defend Blizzard? People are upset over this Real ID situation for perfectly natural, well founded reasons. Protection of privacy is important, whether on the internet or in the real world. Just because people are labeling WoW the WoW killer due to the decision they've made doesn't mean you need to trivialize the way people feel, fear and anxiety being the two most prevelant emotions showing in a large majority of threads on the matter, because you're fine with the changes. More power to you. Many of us aren't, and this issue is much larger than Blizzard violating privacy on a gaming forum, but sets a precadent for companies being in control of the users', who access or pay for the features from an online company, private information.
Maybe the user you responded to would like the game to fail, and there are probably others who would be happy to see that occur. Rather, I think the large majority of people posting in this thread are simply concerned about their well being, and the well being of private information across the internet. We have every right to be worried, regardless of our like or dislike for Blizzard or any of their intellectual properties.
