So you want something "new" to play, but at the same time want it to play just as fast and similar to everything you've played already...quite contradictory.
That's quite a lot of words to put in someone else's mouth. I don't see why his point isn't legitimate or valid. People play games to have fun, not to have a second / unpaid job. He never said he wants it to play like game X, but newer; he just said he wanted a decent pace to the combat so he isn't stuck waiting for a mob to die instead of having fun.
I have to say that I also agree with him. Regular mob fights should not take very long. The longer duration fights should be reserved for more challenging mobs. I'm not suggesting the game turn into a twitch-fest, but the combat in the videos seems even slower than FFXI. I also don't like some of the casting times I saw, or the amount of skills that seemed to be 'click + wait' oriented.
Ty Aesperus that is exactly what I wanted to convey :-)
And @ Khrymson a post like that is not becomming for you as a "guide"

Having the guide title has nothing to do with me guiding members here, and I say this cause its the main complaint by everyone on every board even beta......"we want something new and different and unique" and SE is doing just that, and those same people are then like ugh its not fast or excting or super easy like my current <insert generic MMO here>
So why oh why does everyone just want yet another MMO with the same everything as you're already bored with...sheesh! This generation of gamers need to learn to adapt to new styles of play and try new things instead of the same ole boring crap everytime!
Also what I highlighted sounds like raid style...easy trash and semi-hard, longer boss fights. Same crap as is already out there. In Final Fantasy every fight feels epic and challenging and makes you think, not just spam attacks until it dies...
On a more serious note I just dont want the combat to take 30secs+ for one mob ... ok 30 secs is perhaps over the top but it seems to take ages :-)
Its still beta so I hope they will speed it up a bit, at least I hope so, I need something new to play.

Soo what does fun entice in your book ? Mobs dying the instant u see them and dropping epics ?
YES!!!! GIVE ME EPICS OR GIVE ME DEATH!!! I WANT EVERY MOB I FIGHT TO GIVE ME MY PURPLES!!! That way we get away from the griending for gear, I hate that, if WoW did that I so play WoW. Wait this is not about WoW sorry I brough it up, but if FFXIV could be more like WoW then I be all over it until the following week when I be bored to tears cause it was just like WoW and I wanted something that was not WoW anymore, in the following week it could be more like Aion cause that would be the flavor of the week when it comes to MMO's.
Final Fantasy games have always been slow paced. General/Common mobs should not die in a few seconds. Whats the point of attacking something that will die in two hits... they might as well just give you the exp for walking by the creatures and not waste your time.
It seems people want mmo's to be easy just so they can get to endgame asap but then they want to complain when they have nothing to do at endgame and say that the game is too easy. At this point they will say it's just like wow and how they wish there was a game with more of a challenge to it (Which FFXI and FFXIV are).
if you want a challenge and your toon to mean something to you then play FFXIV.
FF games aren't slow. You control several characters and in the ones with ATB system it can be very hectic.
FF11 involved NO ZERO ZILTCH NONE NADA tactics at all. Don't give me that crap.
True, you never had to stun certain mobs to keep them from one shotting your raids. Nor did you have to position yourself so that the PLD could cover you, or him position to you. Never even had to communicate with party members to work in your skill chain rotations.
FFXI definitely required no tactics whatsoever. /scarcasm off
Watching these vids, from a game so late in it's Dev, has hammered that last nail home in it's coffin for me, and thats coming from a PvE loving player (the target audience for it I would assume).
The UI looks a mess, potentionally a pita to look at for extended periods, and the combat that i have seen has looked just so slooooow that I know it will have me ripping my eyes out.
I am really dissapointed in the direction they have gone in tbh.
Me and the GF have decided to just stick with EQ2 until Rift gets here now.
aye compared to any other mmo thats been played XI did need tactics all the time if one person didnt do their job everyone would be fucked and basically thats tactics everyone doing something in particular to succeed

All elitism aside, FF games have not always been slow paced. There also also plenty of mobs in the FF universe that have been really easy to kill (trash mobs), and die in a few seconds (1-2 turns). The method in which most FF games make this challenging is by having you fight multiple mobs at once (which is something that doesn't happen enough in FFXI, or by the looks of it FFXIV.
Combat doesn't have to be slow-paced for your character to 'mean something'. Nor does combat have to be slow to be 'challenging'. In many cases, I would argue the opposite would be true. I'm not arguing that FFXIV should become a wow-clone, but the combat does seem somewhat slow / simple. Some of the tactics mentioned above from FFXI (positioning, timing skill chains, etc.) I just didn't see from any of the videos. It could be the players, it could be the levels, or it could be the game. I just hope it's not the last 2.
As for the jump to endgame, it's simple. That method of linear progression doesn't really work anymore for MMOs. People have done too many linear progressions to the point where they don't care anymore. They've leveled before, we all have, that just isn't 'enough' anymore. Becoming stronger is fun, but only to a point, people want there to be some substance after that, some meaning to the game, something that has been primarily lacking in almost every MMO over the past decade or so. Take a look at what WoW and FFXI have both done. They started off having challenge (yes, even WoW in it's early days), and as the content starts to progress expansion after expansion, people just don't have the patience to redo the same old challenges over and over, and the games can't retain enough players to consistantly have enough people to constantly recycle the old content. To compensate this, both games have been forced to simplify older content, to streamline players towards newer content. They are not the only 2 MMOs to have done this either.
To get back on the subject, however, the combat is indeed slow, while this is subjective I think people's responses have all but proven this to be true. It sounds like the question now is whether or not enough people like it this way, to warrant doing nothing about it.

And I feel that the responses going the other way proves that their are plenty of people for SE to continue with their design decision of having slow, tactical combat. God forbid a game designer step out of the box and not deliver another WoW clone. Luckily for us, SE isn't a pushover for money like Blizzard is, and they will design the game how they see fit and not the way that forum posters want.
For those of you that this is a game breaker and all that and must have something end game. There will be plenty of gil farmers that you can contact that will have a leveling service, since you dont care and want to just enjoy the more complex end game where it wont seem a bore to you any more they will be more than happy to take your money and do it for you until they turn it over to you and you can do you thing. Always an option maybe by then the combat will be more to your liking and it wont seem slow and unresponsive.
Yes the combat is slow from everything we have seen, does this make it a bad game? Can't tell you that I have not played it yet. Are you in beta and have that same thought that this is a game breaker? Well your in beta and dont need to buy the game since you are getting the whole its broken thing already.
I am not saying don't fix it, all I am saying is quit ruining the game for others by saying stuff like that if you have no experience with the game.
The combat is really slow, slower then ffxi, or any other ff game
you run up to mob, klick attack mode (you cant move while doing this) klick anohter button to target mob, by this time the mob has moved, so you have to run up to it, then you can klick lock target with another button (usually this makes you camera face straight down into the ground) then you klick attack, and wait for 10 seconds for attack to go of, and repeat until mob is dead.
if you happen to get 2 on you at same time, the targeting system is so crap, you wanna switch target with your switch target button, bu they target only change between yourself and the dead target, so you have to unlock with your lock button, then untarget with your target button, then switch, then target, then lock, then you can fight the second target.
this also hapen when talking to npc, if theres other players standing near, you have to tab through everyone until you target the npc.
so immensly slow and i hate the combat mode thing. calling it more complex is just laughable, its not "better" then other mmos, why would making the targeting system idiotic and fighting pace slow make it more complex? ive played ffxi aswell and i own all ff games, this is nothing like any of them.
using a gamepad is a must, moving with it is 100 times easier, the menues are much easier to use.
the ui is outdated and you need to go trought 100 different layers just to get to your inventory.
the quests are vague, it takes 40 minutes to figure out which direction to go for the starting quests
Well they could always implement the whole 'here follow this arrow to get to the mob' thing for you if actually using your head to figure something out hurts it or something. Not trying to insult you but with everything all the other games have where you have quest helper or something already in game that is like quest helper implement it and takes out all the guessing from the game or any actual thought coming from the person playing. While some will love this feature others like to actually use there brains and figure stuff out with out some addon or something telling them here you go, go here and X will mark the spot. I am not one of those people that will settle for the old here you go, go here follow this road that takes you to where you need to go and kill x monster that will just sit there and let you kill it in 2 seconds cause you are a god among all other players. And as a matter of fact with the videos I have seen the map is in fact marked where you will find said mobs unless they have taken out and again have made you use your brain to try to figure something out. I know reading all this has already given you a headache cause its too hard, and will probably not even get past the first sentence, yes I know some of it seems like wall of post but still read a few of the lines and come back with a good insult for me please.
But I will agree with you that I am not impressed with the whole control type and menu based thing they went with, I will have to get used to it if I plan on enjoying the game at all. But the game cant be perfect and meet everyone expectations, they all have there anoying things while this one might have a few too many for people to get over and might end up dropping it because of that. Those that stay will have to hope for better control and UI features, might never come or might come in a month or a year who knows.

Please... I havent said I don't want to earn my levels and enjoy the levelling experience... just that the combat looks mindnumbingly slow.
Refusing to endure a boring uninspiring combat system shouldnt be something to be criticised for.

Well, potentiolly yeah actually.
till you actully play it Its not numb minding slow. if yout hink its to slow then just go play some button smasher mmo
The pace is fine, it's the mechanics that need work.
Passive/active mode is a mess.
Having to stop to pull out and put away your weapon creates the same animation delay as XI. It needs to be fluid and instant. But this we already know and has been talked to death already.

True that my friend. Let FF be FF, if you don't like it? Great, there are hundreds of other games you can play! Freedom and choice are great things.

Fixed it for you. Tip of the day. If you love/loved FFXI, stick with it.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
