... and MMO's are supposed to be about being in a game where you are free to do as you please.
A deeply flawed and ultimately false statement on MMO design. You may want to meditate on the concept a bit, or at the very least educate yourself some on the industry, because it just illustrates an ignorance of MMOs to say such silly things.
Ultimately Skeeterxi had the right answer. If there are points where it's clearly advantageous to jump, something frequently included in similiar games, its absence in FFXIV will only come across as frustrating, useless and a major detriment to enjoy the game. But it depends largely on terrain and world design.
Experienced gamers know that it's not just about whether or not the jumping is included as a movement feature. There are plenty of titles that are excellent games which forgo the act of jumping. Many of which MMO players love to simply dimiss in their ongoing genre arrogance. I'm not certain I'll get the game yet but it certainly wouldn't have anything to do with a meaningless feature like jumping, or the lack thereof. Although I will certainly be happy the little children that can't stop jumping in most MMO's, and feel the need to whine about it's lack of it here, won't be present. It's at least a minor upside to the situation.
The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.
I havent liked any FF games since #1 why should I want to play one now especially when there are so many MMOs to choose from.... plus hell I like JUMPING! *Bounce bounce bounce*
but no and thats not the only reason why either XD
Well the question was pretty stright forward. But if you werent planning to play why are you in this forum? If you hate it why bother?
Meh... I *was* planning to play but now I will not. Ive already played Ryzom and didnt like it. Why would I want to play a reskinned version of it?

Your own assessment is one of pure ignorance.
Case in point. You climb a hill. 3 sides of the hill have a steep drop, but its not a high drop. Consider it something you could jump off of. There's something you want on the other side, or perhaps you just want to travel the shortest distance from point A to point B.
Instead you have to go back down the way you came, go around, etc.
Jumping just became something in game that you missed. It really is that simple.
In FFXIV players will be surrounded by invisible walls. Walls that didnt even exist in ancient titles like EverQuest.
We have a three dimensional world being simulated. Characters should have the illusion of three dimensional freedom. Not some camera tied rigidly to the shoulder of the avatar, but an avatar that exhibits the freedom of movement expected at our current level of technology.
You can run around calling people kids because they want to jump if you like. In the end though that just makes you a name caller, and isnt that what kids do?
Meh... I *was* planning to play but now I will not. Ive already played Ryzom and didnt like it. Why would I want to play a reskinned version of it?
What the hell is Ryzom?
Sad.
What's sad is comparing FF14 to Ryzom. I see no parallels other than both belong to the MMORPG genre.
Ryzom: sci-fi.... FF14: fantasy
Ryzom: quasi-sandbox... FF14: themepark
Ryzom: PvP... FF14: no PvP
If we're gonna call FF14 a re-skinned version of a game, can we at least pick a game that bears some resemblance to FF14?
Pretty sure hes refering to the class system and not much more. Its not sad I know I dont know every mmo to hit the market nor do I expect other people to there are hundreds.
not being able to swm or jump will probably not make me NOT play the game, however it is not preferable for sure. Part of enjoying an MMO to me is exploring, not being able to fully interact with the environment, swim, find underwater caves, jump, get to higher ground that may have interesting secrets, or just great views, will certainly impact the fun I have in game. Its not a game killer, but it does bruise it.

Meh I wouldnt be worried about what I was referring to. It was a shallow comparison based on surface features, which is really what this discussion thread is all about: The fact that there are surface features of the game that are just plain missing. The question is, does the lack of these features annoy you, or not? My answer is, yes it does.
Then again I play MMO's to interact in the virtual world concept. I understand some people only play MMO's to ride Chocobo's and talk about the latest episode of Bleach. This MMO is for those people, not for me. Its not going to deliver the experience I look for in a quality game.

This invisible walls only makes the game feel more real. Having ppls jumping over your head in full plate armor swinging a huge 2handed weapon is just silly as is Jumping over fences or down a hill or w/e.
All this jumping/swimming issues some ppls have r ridiculous in my opinion lets face it if the game would add swimming and jumping but do it more realistic u wouldn't want it
Like sure u can jump over that Fence there BUT lets see u would have to get rid of your armor and half of your inventory before u r able to do so (same for swimming)
I personally think that this method might be best for all this way ppls who play an MMO for the sake of watching there avatar swimming and jumping can do so and the ppls who play an mmo for the Games sake can do so as well....
But none of u would want to leave your stuff behind only to jump over the fence or swim across the river would u now?
So whats the real problem u have with the missing of this features?

First of all, I like being able to jump in a game. I just started playing Guild Wars (out of boredom and to see the mythos of the series) and I got to say that it is indeed frustrasting not being able to jump, especially when trying to get up and down hills or around fences. Jumping seems to be a great function in a game.
Second, I hate jumpers. A lot of people do not know how to PvP unless they cna jump around like hopping bunnies or fill the auction house with a mad rush of choo chooing froggers.
But whether I love or hate this function, it will not decide on how or why I will buy a game.
If we go back to Zelda 1 and 2, you could jump in the second Zelda, but it was a poor cousin to a a definitive game franchise.
Being able to jump will not affect me playing Final Fantasy XIV, but will affect it will be the release of other games like Cataclysm, Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, TERA and Vindictus. I don't think FFIV will have a great community and a lasting power in a market that is choosing innovation over stale gameplay.
Final Fantasy is making the mistake of relying on style over substance and many MMO fans are just plain bored with pretty games that do not offer innovative advances to a genre that needs a savior.
Then again I play MMO's to interact in the virtual world concept. I understand some people only play MMO's to ride Chocobo's and talk about the latest episode of Bleach. This MMO is for those people, not for me. Its not going to deliver the experience I look for in a quality game.
That's all.
What exactly do you mean by 'interaction'? Interaction with the world, or interaction with it's players? Because one of these things is strongly encouraged in this game.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Will Final Fantasy be a good game? Yes.
Will it be the WOW killer? Sadly, no.
That should be the real question.
Why should that be the real question? Why are people so obsessed over the next "WoW killer"? WoW is a phenomenon, and FFXIV doesn't need to beat their subscription numbers to be successful.

Interaction with my character and how it relates to the world.
Without my character being able to relate to the world on simple physical levels there really is no need to look any further at the game. It is not something I am interested in. Dont even bother explaining how wrong I am. I know what I like and what I dont, and I really dont like this. I may as well be piloting a tank.

Well name calling is never all that great but your example with the hill while not wrong precludes the possibility that the world design is not built in such a way that jumping would be useful. With your saem example I could say that instead of jumping I rather glide down and since I played Aion for 9 months my natural reaction would be to glide from a high point rather than jump but then lets say the title didnt have a glide feature. I could use your same argument and say it makes even more sense to glide down as it would be more efficent than jumping. Then some1 who played fyff could come along and say that its by far more efficient to be able to skip the terrain altogther by simply flying over it.
what i am trying to say is that in the long run all arguement would likely be wrong if there is no jump feature likely the terrain itself was built around the fact that you dont need it. Whether or not its implemented is not an issue of practicality but pure enjoyment. With exceptions jumping is usally more of a fluff feature.
as far as you comparison to the real world its been debated over and over in these threads and as simply as you cna say we have free range to jump I have seen the response how often are people required to jump in daily life? Im not saying neve r what I am sayig comparing a fantasy to real life is the mistake in the first place. If you saw a person (in most socities) continually jumping you'd likely find it strange.
Technology wise yes we can but if you have that train of thought why ever create a side scroller? They still exsist and the systems they are on can already handle 3d engines so why make them. This is strictly up to the desingers of the game much in the form of movement can be implemented its just strictly a desing feature at this point (given that the engine can handle that type of movement).
I am not saying its wrong to not want to play due to not having certain features because in the long run its your money, your time, and your enjoyment that matters.
I voted no. Now, some back story. I didn't play the previous FF MMO, I was engrossed in SoE and CoH at the time. I was quite interested in FFXIV becuase the original has gotten fairly high praise, and the hype for this one was off the charts. Then I heard there wouldn't be jumping, and I was instantly wary. Then I heard no swimming, and the game flew off my buy list forever. As I said in another post, it ruins the immersion factor. When im in a game, and I come across a fence, I want climb or jump over. When I see a river, I want to swim in and through. That is part of the immersion, the exploration, the feeling that you are in a living breathing world.
I also understand that not everyone thinks this way. That is fine, there are plenty of MMOs for me, and plenty for the decent number of folks that feel the way I do.
That being said, I want to make clear that any game dev that leaves these features out is making a bad decision. Ive heard many times on forums about this people saying "Oh, this game isnt for you, move along." And I agree. But realize this: I and others won't play this game because it lacks these features. You and others would STILL play this game if they HAD those features. Im not hearing anyone say they wouldnt play if they added swimming and jumping. So the Devs are only limiting their community by their actions, not expanding them. Bad decision.

He does have a point. If a person chooses to completely ignore FF XIV due to the lack of jumping, that would indicate immature behaviour which is most likely found among "kids".
While some people enjoy the movement freedom jumping provides in their mmorpgs and others don't care that much, it is absurd to completely disregard a title due to the lack of it.
I don't really care about jumping sitting or swimming. Those would be nice to have, but the game is still great without it. I'm only really looking forward to the fishing and cooking. Now if the game didn't have those, I would be a sad panda. Anyway.... about the sitting. If you look back on FFXI. At first it never had a dancing emote but they were able to add it later when Dancer came out. So I wouldn't be surprised if they added sit later.

This is the fundamental truth of the exchange. And there really is nothing to debate. He is absolutely correct.

Well u cant be wrong anyway everyone likes/dislikes other stuff in a game and none of them is right or wrong.
You do want to be able to jump over fences and swim across rivers even tho with all the armor u wear there is no way u could do so than that's cool and there r enough games out there which dont care for that and allow u to do exactly that FF isn't one of them and for me at least that's a good thing and even more reason to like it even tho i still think u should be able to go into water and die (if u didn't leave your heavy stuff behind) but like already pointed out in another post of mine no one would want that so why even bother adding it to a game XD
Since when have you ever been able to jump in a FF game? Here's a better question. Why do they have so much jumping in other games? Because they think jumping is oh so realistic and used in real warfare all the time?

Damn he beat me to it. This is damn near verbatum what I was going to say. Perfect points.
