If you design a game that doesnt need jumping, why add it?
I know Ryzom was given as a similar example, but that game doesnt have jumping, it was never designed to have jumping and there was never really a time when i felt like i needed to jump.
Ryzom DID have swimming though, and there where plenty of times where you HAD to swim to get from place to place.
As long as FFVIX doesnt ever feel like it needs jumping or swimming then I cant see why it would ever be a deal breaker?

Because running and jumping is just a normal thing to do and want to do in an mmo I mean what is the space bar for if not to JUMP!
But seriously swimming hmm should be there but heyho as for sitting well I dont care but being able to Jump is a breaker for me, so without it I wont play shame

#1 Resolution, The beta locks you at a 720p display resolution or a 1080p which means that if your monitor does not support 1080p your stuck viewing a tinny screen. Also currently the game does not allow any modification of textures, graphics, backgrounds or anything of the sort. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt because its beta.
Unless they offer the ability to change the resolution settings to fit your screen I won't play the game. I am not spending $400 on this just to try it. (Ps3+game +tax)
#2 Controls & Camera. Enough said Fix this please its horrible.
#3 Very high system requirements. My machine is not a slouch but on the benchmark I only got 2000 or so which is extremely low and about 1000 lower than I expected.
If I have a machine that can run AoC & Aion on maximum settings in VERY crowded areas at about 30-35 fps and on average on 70+ fps there's no reason why I couldn't run FFXIV on at least medium settings comfortably.

It's already been proven that the benchmark is broken. FFXIV will take some muscle to run but don't base your mileage on the benchmark.

Not sure where you get your info at but from my experience the game does NOT lock your screen rez.

If your gonna play it on a PS3 you should be fine, word on the street is that only Keyboard and Mouse sucks but IMO they aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Its just the mouse camera doesn't control Like WOW and people can't handle it.

Hmm yeah IDK I got almost a 3k score on an e8400, ATI 4850 and 4 gigs of ram. If you've got specs around there you'll be fine to play the game. I'm sure there will be some more optimization tweaks before launch as well.

You know, I wonder if instead of spacebar jumping they'll add jumping the way they did in XIII. Instead of jumping whenever you want, certain terrain points will have your character jump as they approach them.
Actually, I think I would like this better.
That would actually be amazing.
This is the only type of jumping I support. I never jump in real life unless absolutely required to do so. I cretainly don't randomly jump while standing in line at the store. I don't jump when walking down the street. Why would I do these in a game? If I'm at a ledge I can jump down, a few feet, I may do so. Even then, I would rather walk around.
Certainly the same goes for swimming. I only go swimming when I'm specifically planning on swimming, not when I want to cross a body of water fully clothed. I often go out of my way to use a bridge rather than cross the middle of a creek or river.
Being able to either jump or swim anywhere would ruin immersion for me. I play WoW, but it's only a distraction. I feel zero immersion in that game and abundant jumping is one of the reasons. So is unrealistic swimming. You can swim quite deep and can breathe for a very long time, all while fighting. Yeah, that's not at all realistic and it takes away from immersion.
All I can say is that I have a suspicion that the people that find this a deal-breaker are the type of people I won't miss in this game. Just reading through this thread seems to confirm my suspicion. I'd also like to add that this game was obviously built without those features in mind. There was never a point in FFXI that I felt I was missing something by not being able to jump or swim and I would be shocked if the same weren't true with this game.
That being said, if you don't like it, don't play. There are many MMOs where you can jump and swim, go find one of them. The people that get this game (and by "get" I mean understand) will get why there is no jumping or swimming. People need to stop making threads on this.
Jumping and swimming are totally irrelevent on whether i 'll play FFXIV or not.

You can change resolution in-game... up to 1680x1050, at least, and several resolutions in-between, covering all the screen aspect ratios. I think the reason for the restricted resolutions for the benchmark is so that everyone's testing the same setup and, so, the scores are a little more "meaningful" when compared between computer builds.
#2 Controls & Camera. Enough said Fix this please its horrible.
That's subjective, I guess. I had trouble with camera control when using keyboard, but it's mostly due to the fact that my system is currently underpowered for the game (got a score of 926 on "low" if that's any indication :-p). I find it far more playable with a gamepad, at least for now.
#3 Very high system requirements. My machine is not a slouch but on the benchmark I only got 2000 or so which is extremely low and about 1000 lower than I expected.
Don't go by the benchmark, as others have said. It's not an accurate representation of how the game itself will run. For one, SE has themself stated that the engine behind XIV is such that most people playing it for now (except on the utmost highest end systems) won't be able to run it smoothly at max settings. Guess what the benchmark runs at? :-p).
The game itself has various level of detail options that can be adjusted to suit the individuals's system and/or preferences. Let's put it this way... My system, as I said, scored 300 points below the lowest score SE even recognizes with the benchmark... I'm on a 9500GT (a new 460 is in the mail - woot!), for example. I have to turn everything to the lowest settingsand get an average of 15-18 FPS in town, upwards of 25 in other areas, and have peaked as high as 30 in a few spots. That's on a setup that, technically, shouldn't even be able to *run* the game. Yet, it's quite playable and - even at lowest settings - still looks quite good (wish I could share some screenshots but... yeah).

So should we now be referring to the lack of jumping, swimming, etc as 'innovative"? hehe.
Still sounds like lazy developing to me.
Not exactly. A 2D playing field has some advantages like no falling through the world, less bandwitdh usage between server and client, simpler coordinate calculations for the server which in turn means less load / lag , less hacker prone, etc.
Innovative no (GW was like that for example, and a lot of other games) but it sure has its advantages which for me personally count more than something that doesn't really add to the game, like jumping.

If I don't play it will be because of 3 reasons.

honistly i dont think its a big deal, and if it was square enix can easily add thoughs features.

I'm going to play FFXIV even if they remove combat, story and crafting. It's just so awesome game
