Different strokes for different folks. Not every game has to be the same.
The market is already flooded with fast combat, bunny hopping, PvP heavy, keyboard mashing games. I just find it ludicrous that if a single game is being produced that does something a little different, people will come crawling out of the woodwork to criticize the game. These people will then go on to later post about how they want something "fresh & innovative" about 50% of the time.
I have played WoW, done the raids, button mashed alongside the best & worst.
I played FFXI, spent weeks without gaining a single level in my main job, but still had a blast talking with people, crafting, and exploring places and doing missions.
I have enjoyed both styles of play, but I would prefer FFXIV to stick to the slower combat style where you don't mash a button non stop. Button mashing and min-maxing doesn't really seem to suit the mentality of most FFXI players (who, like it or not, are the primary target audience).

Good lord is this thread still going? Surprising it may be, but yes just like WoW boards, the GW boards, and yes the FF boards people will come to the defense of the game they are backing / like. As much right as you have to debate the issue, they have the right to bring up their points to defend it. The essence of debate is both sides, not one. So yes they are going to make a stance on what issues they feel they can rebuke with what knowledge they have on the topic so please don't take it personal.

if they were actually being constructive instead of name calling... i would agree....
instead, we are treated to "go back to wow" or "you are just a troll we dont want your negative comments here" posts... so childish.
take a look at your constructive post: Dameaus
im sorry but why does that video look even REMOTELY entertaining to anyone? the combat looks slow, boring, and generic...... the skills are laughably simple. *SWING**SWING**GUARD**SWING*...... this combat looks like it is straight out of an MMO made 10 years ago....
Thats a troll post hence you get treated as such.
or an opinion post.... which is apparently paramount to trolling these days.
OH GAWD... SOMEONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION THAN I DO! HE IS A TROLL!
lol oh gawd.... here come the fanboys... run and hide those of you who honestly want to discuss the issues they see with the game. fanboys wont stand by negative comments!
btw.... the no pvp thing.... that is not actually true, so you might want to check your facts. there was PVP in FFXI... there will be PVP in FFXIV. plain and simple. it may not be popular.... but it will be implemented. soz to disappoint your clearly superior intellect.
You never came here to discuss any issue, just bash on a feature in which you know everything about after a short youtube video.
uh its true theres no pvp in ffxiv, nor will it be there at launch, I never said it would never have PvP. I know they said there will be in the future, but the future is far off, and ffxi didnt get pvp until years after release.
I am glad you realize that I have the superior intellect here, so go on type some other bs so i can keep correcting you. Because I am really bored atm and still have about 40 min to kill.
i made a comment based on a video that was linked to show how "superior" FFXIVs combat is supposed to be.... which it is not. it looks generic, and slow. im sorry you cant tell the difference.
must be hard getting through life without understanding sarcasm, or when someone is laughing at you at your expense...
I wonder how many of those who voted 'No' werent planning on playing the game even before word of no jumping or swimming was released. It might be beneficial for the topic if another poll choice was added for those who were simply not interested in the game regardless of reason and felt like voting anyway.
Dameaus, it isn't so much the content of the post that makes it a "troll post" but rather the context in which you present your argument.
so instead of saying the combat looks slow, boring, and generic you would rather i say, in less descriptive but similar terms....i think the combat looks bad? its the same fucking difference, im sorry you cant see that.
both are opinion, bother are valid, and neither is trolling. people on forums need to get it through their fucking skulls that people have different opinions, and SAYING their opinion is not trolling. trolling, by definition, is:
"a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response."
none of my comments fall into the category of "inflammatory" or "extraneous", and none of my comments were designed to provoke an emotional response.
if anything, those that are commenting on MY comments are trolling, as they are intentionally name calling (inflammatory), taking the thread off topic, and desiring to illicit an emotional response.
guildwars never had it and neither did FFXI why the fuck should I care and I have over 15k hours clocked into guildwars....obviously the no jumping and swimming thing is not an issue.
15000/5/365=8.2 hrs per day... everyday.... since release. NO!

They're negative comments with no substance. "This sucks, that's a joke, all of it's crappy" Is not constructive or helpful. You come off telling people that do like the beta, ffxi or want to like ffxiv that everything they like about this sucks, so in turn you're saying they suck, regardless if you mean it that's how it gets interpreted.
You're spitting in peoples eyes and their only recourse is to spit back, leading to a pointless message board flaming. I realize you don't want to be constructive, then don't bother posting. If all you do is say how awful something is then you know the only response you're going to get are these. It's your fault that happened. If you want a better discourse, state what you think better. If all you want to do is flame, understand your position is flawed and you won't get many good answers back because you can't ARGUE against a flame, only take it and ignore it.
As for me personally, combat looks awfully slow at like level 1, but most games are slow. That group video looked better and it's stated somewhere I thought they were high physical levels but like level 1 ranks with those weapons, so they don't have any skills anyway. I believe I read that anyway. As far having the ability to phsycailly manuever my character in the world, I don't like not having it but it's not a game breaker. I understand jumping can cause problems in a huge mmo where combing over every single area to make sure people can't get stuck is probably hard, annoying and the job would never be done. Not to mention it can cause glitching and bugs if people are able to get around where they shouldn't. Swimming also has litle point if you don't plan to put anything in the water. I realize all of that but I like for my character to have options available to them, if I want to emote, jump over a rock, swim in a lake etc, I'd like to do it. It won't stop me from playing and eventually it'll just be how the game is in my mind, but at first I know I'll have a little "aww, can't do that" feeling in my gut.
I don't really get why Dameaus is getting this treatment. Hrayr posted a link to the video (against the forum rules regarding NDA and in several threads at a time, regardless of whether it was relevant to the discussion) suggesting that we "let the haters hate". This was an inflammatory implication that posters who are on the anti-FFXIV/pro-jumping side are simply hateful people by nature. Dameaus responded with a critique that no one except Hrayr himself even bothered to acknowledge with a decent response. His criticism was that video's combat looked generic, simple, and dated. And I can't possibly disagree with him there. Compared to even the low-level combat of other modern MMOs—even F2P—it was nothing to get excited over. Few flashy particle effects, no animations to write home about, no apparent team attacks or chains from one skill to another. As excited as I am about getting to play FFXIV soon, this video was not something that I would show off to someone in order to dispel their negative attitude about any aspect of FFXIV. Exposing the video as a lackluster advertisement for FFXIV was not a troll post. The people who responded with GB2WOW are trolling, and should stop.

After finding out that you can not Jump, that was the deal breaker for me, I will not buy because of the no Jumping, to me being able to jumps makes a mmo feel free

same here. not being able to jump is a game breaking mechanic for me....i HATE having to run around stuff for what seems like forever when getting chased by mobs. Besides, it's really not that hard to impliment jumping into a game.
I wasn't really going to play FFXIV anyway having played FFXI for almost three years when it first came out. That game litterally sucked some of my sould out and I just don't trust FF MMO's anymore haha. That said no jumping, swiming, etc. is just epic fail in new games these days.
guildwars never had it and neither did FFXI why the fuck should I care and I have over 15k hours clocked into guildwars....obviously the no jumping and swimming thing is not an issue.
That's 625 days.
Guild Wars came out April 28 2005.
If you started on launch day that means you've spent 32.5% of your life since then in game.
That's would average out to 7 hours 48 minutes a day.

Hmm doesnt look so slow now, wth happened, oh thats right theres levels and as you progess you get more skills/abilities.
oh... so your new tactic to prove that FFXIV has fast paced combat is to link vids to other games that have fast paced combat?
yeah thats a pretty big fail right there... sorry. FFXIV =/= AOC. FFXIV =/= AION. you have no proof that it will follow the same mechanics.... and FFXI is a pretty big indication that it will NOT.
i played FFXI... the combat speed at lvl 1 was... generally speaking... the same as end game. the only thing that changed was added skills that did NOT speed combat up. considering the similarities between the two games.... i expect FFXIV will be much the same. there was a lot of standing around, waiting for your turn to use a skill... using it, and then waiting around some more.

We already know that FFXIV combat speeds up to paces much faster than FFXI. So using FFXI as an indicator to combat speeds in a completely different game doesn't really work in this situation.
Got into the beta, then I downloaded and ran the PCBenchmark tool. It wasn't pretty. I don't play on a toaster but still was a low score.
2) FF is played out.
I've been playing FF's since nintendo, yes, I played the original nintendo game. Played FFXI for 2 years also, it was a great starter mmo for me.
3) Playonline sucks
'Nuff said.
4) I'm doing great in EVE right now and don't feel like changing.
5) I'm waiting for some other mmo's to go into beta, then I will help test them.
Progressing in EVE can be a hands off procedure. Skills just tic off in a queue and I can afford to play 1 other game. I said 1 not 3, 5 or 8 different characters. I'm a one at a time guy.
This news makes me unhappy with the direction that this franchise is going in. Good luck and enjoy to all that are going to play it, I am officially taking a pass.
I would like to see jumping and swimming just for the mere fact that it shows me the developer put some effort into their game.
If there is no meaningful reason to have it in game, then of course it doesn't bother me that it is not there, but like i said,it would show everyone that they are putting some effort into their game.Cutting corners is not something Sqaure has the luxury to do anymore, they can't use the aged game engine and console design excuse anymore, the PS3/Xbox/PC are all capable of not only swimming/jumping but also capable of utilizing advanced physics, something else the game won't have.
Basically FFXIV in a nutshell is a game trying to appease more subscriptions than FFXI could muster,it will have nicer graphics and offer more solo play, but the game will still fall well short of being a next gen game, one example ,lack of advanced physics and of course the lack of other common features, the swimming for example.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Dude,it's in BETA,you can't judge a combat system of a game with a video of a lvl 1 character in beta.
As i said,Aion looks slow at lvl 1.
When you lvl up,you gain skills.
Dunno,it seems like if you never played a mmropg.
