Those aren't the reasons. I'm not playing it because of the 1 character limit. If you have 5 races in a game, I expect to be able to play all 5 for the box fee, and especially for a monthly sub.
I think I read somewhere that was the law that required everyone to play this game for at least one month. and you don't want to break the law do you? well., do you???
I was planning on purchasing FF XIV, but *IF* there will be no jumping/sitting/swimming, then my answer is No, I will not be playing this.
For me a MMO is part virtual world and part game, where the whole experience is greater than the sum of the parts so to speak. To me it is important for my character to be able to stand, sit, jump, run, swim, lay down, walk, make hand gestures, etc. This for me is as important as my character's ability to fight, respond to others, and do many activities. For me the ability of my character to jump, to sit, and to swim is as important as the quality of the gameplay. As good as FF XIV appears right now to become, they just lost me as a future customer.
Thanks for the "heads up".... you have saved me from spending money on a MMO that I would not have been happy with. Cheers to you.

2010, and SE still won't take the time to program jumping and swimming into an mmo they made. sad.... very f'ing sad indeed.
Bout as sad as not taking the time to change it's character models, but whatver...
A game designed around the epicness of the storylines and the immersion of your character into the world you play in... yet you can't jump into the air or kick your feet in some water....
The way I see it, jumping and swimming are nice to have but aren't integral to the game.
People say they want swimming and jumping for "immersion" or whatnot, but really it just allows for shortcuts. Who in their right mind swims across a small river when 30-40 seconds away is a bridge you could just walk across. I know I wouldn't swim the river... especially in clothing and possibly armor of any type. Try swimming in a t-shirt & jeans... its quite difficult.
As for jumping to get up small obstacles or go over a fence... who does that anyways? I think a better option would be to give an action command that would allow you to climb a small rockface or steep incline. Same goes with fences. Now as for those people who say "Oh, but there is invisible walls! I wants to fall down a small drop, it won't hurt me!"... have you ever tried jumping down even a 3-4 foot drop while carrying something heavy? It is a really good way to twist an ankle or break a leg. Again, this would be another good situation for the idea of an action command that would allow you to climb down the small incline instead of looking like some lemming jumping off a cliff.
Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy jumping and swimming in some games... but I really wouldn't want to kill the immersion in FFXIV with people bunny hopping around and swimming across rivers and lakes while wearing plate armor. I am all for the whole "climbing" type action commands though... lets people get up those small inclines while keeping out the bunny hoppers.

Okay, I've heard people say that it's important for immersion, and while I completely disagree I can at least see the angle they're coming from. But how are jumping and swimming necessary for epic storylines? Aren't we talking about cutscenes here? a.) You don't control your character AT ALL while those are going on, so your inability to hop around should have no impact on cutscenes. b.) They could still easily show your character and NPCs swimming and jumping in cutscenes if they need to, since that is easy compared to implementing it in the rest of the game. The freedom of movement argument totally fails to mesh with the epicness of the storyline in any way.

Real funny. I'd rather resub to a SOE product than play that "game".

Dont really care much about that, swimming is kind of unrealistic with armor, but mainly the one I don't want to see is jumping. Spam jumping is the most retarded thing I've ever seen.
I think that people jump when they are bored in mmos and have come so accustomed to it that it has been integrated into their nervous system; jumping is like nicotine.
I voted no. Now, some back story. I didn't play the previous FF MMO, I was engrossed in SoE and CoH at the time. I was quite interested in FFXIV becuase the original has gotten fairly high praise, and the hype for this one was off the charts. Then I heard there wouldn't be jumping, and I was instantly wary. Then I heard no swimming, and the game flew off my buy list forever. As I said in another post, it ruins the immersion factor. When im in a game, and I come across a fence, I want climb or jump over. When I see a river, I want to swim in and through. That is part of the immersion, the exploration, the feeling that you are in a living breathing world.
I also understand that not everyone thinks this way. That is fine, there are plenty of MMOs for me, and plenty for the decent number of folks that feel the way I do.
That being said, I want to make clear that any game dev that leaves these features out is making a bad decision. Ive heard many times on forums about this people saying "Oh, this game isnt for you, move along." And I agree. But realize this: I and others won't play this game because it lacks these features. You and others would STILL play this game if they HAD those features. Im not hearing anyone say they wouldnt play if they added swimming and jumping. So the Devs are only limiting their community by their actions, not expanding them. Bad decision.
All those actions go along with sandbox hint hint!
I like to feel like I can interact properly with the world I'm in. I typically see what objects I can jump up on in MMOs, so without it the whole game would feel unnatural and I wouldn't be able to play it. The swimming is less important then the jumping and the sitting wouldn't matter to me at all.
But there's plenty of other stuff involved with online FF that gets me to not play it so I wouldn't encounter those things anyways.
A poster came up with an excellent point which I have partially said before, rather than having this whole jumping thing if they implemented a climb down or up it would be kind of cool. As far as swimming why? I understand the concern for those that want it and I partially agree I would love to have it as well, but that does not disuade me from playing the game, I have not played it yet for I am not a beta tester (lucky bastards) so I will reserve my opinion on the lack of certain mechanics until I give the game a chance when I do play it. Those that do not even try it might be right and it might suck but I have not played it so....

Do you know a game called Demon's Soul? The game that got game of the year from Gamespot last year. Have you seen the combat in that game? Using your standards, Demon's Soul was a horrible game that didn't look "REMOTELY" entertaining.
I find FFXIV'S combat to look more entertaining and "fun" than any other game. Case in point, I played Aion for 4 months. Initially, the combat looked "really really cool" and "revolutionary." Then, I got completely board of the aerial acrobatics and exagerated motions. All flash and no substance.
Playing FFXI, I never felt that the combat didn't have substance or wasns't fun. Too each his own. You think it "looks boring" but many many people completely disagree with you.
That Video looks Amazing to me. That video makes me want to play right here and now. Too bad, I don't have a beta key.

i never have, and never will play wow because the combat looks even more terrible than this games..... so nice try on your snarky comment... you fail at everything.
when i play an MMO.... i like the combat to feel epic and dynamic... fighting one enemy at a time that takes 5 people several minutes to kill each just looks AWFUL.
the only MMO that i have played that has managed to get combat right in terms of making your character feel like a true hero is COH/COV. fighting 6-8 enemies at a time and seeing them get flung around by powers was awesome..... too bad the game got repetitive and boring after about 3 months.

i OWN demon's souls.... and the combat is WAY WAY WAAAAAY more dynamic than FFXIV. if you disagree, you never played anything other than a heavy armor wearing sword and shield character. being a char that used daggers or other light weapons, wore light armor and was able to dodge around and perform quick attacks was incredibly rewarding. FFXIV doesnt look to hold a candle to the depth of demon's souls combat.
