I absolutely agree. I think it was a majopr mistake of this site to tell us that "SWTOR is an MMO and you can't even discuss whether it is or isn't any more'. From what I see, this is KOTOR III Online. I have no problems with that but, for all its networking and group play features, it's still a SRPG you have to play - and pay - online.
I think you need new eyes if that's what you see.
Being able to quest, explore, group, chat with players in a world that isn't instanced or seperated into channels is what exactly? Your typical single player game?
Oh, is it because you have the option to solo,...boo hoo.
Definition as what MMO means to most people today is what we are aiming at, this is not your typical "known" MMO way of things. Even at the start prior to any information the devs posted along the lines of "well , it's really not a full fleged MMO but will have many aspects of an MMO, we are going a different fundemental way in developing this new title to be announced"
Pretty much that quote (or close to it) should be posted and labled top side of the home page of the game.
I doubt the devs ever said it was not a "full fledged MMO".. it is a full fledged mmo. They only said that if you want to solo you have the option to do so. Didn't mean there was an instance. The whole game is pretty much open world , no instance for questing ...
No argument guys on the whole MMO thing, it again has elements, but it is not like anything people have played before and even the devs as I posted earlier made note of such. It is SWTOR series online, that is exactly what everyone should expect and nothing more or less. If you do, you will be dissapointed no matter how you look at it.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
These are mini game missions and that is fine to have them on rails.
However Space should be there to explore like the ground game.
Because they explored space all the time in the movies. Space is there for wars, you know Star Wars.
Edit: Please remember this is a story based MMO, everything will happen for a reason, if you come to a scene where you're floating in space (like the SW captain video) it will be for a reason, not because you wanted to see the other side of that asteroid.

I already know what to expect, so I don't expect to be dissapointed... I know what kind of an MMO this is, and it aint no GW1. It is like any other themepark open world MMO.

Actually they did, want me to quote it? sorry no go, that was so long ago, I am sure someone might take the time to look it up, but basicly the summary was just that, it's not going to be your typical MMO , but definitly have MMO elements. Your typical MMO today doesn't fix it'self on story, more on character grinding, etc.. This game is story first, MMO second is the short summary the way I understand it. Which when put into perspective with bioware's past titles makes very much sense.

Yes, but from what we have seen you cannot make your own quests or leave quests; most quests are instanced; there is no exploration off a preset pathway; I can group but only for 'hotpoints' to be worthwile; chat with players...? LOL. Sorry mate but I'm not a twelve year old girl who need a party chat function - and it certainly doesn't make a MMO.

.... All movies are on rails, this is a game.
Well it's a good thing they're putting so much emphasis on ground combat, space may be on rails but I seriously doubt the ground game or basically MOST OF THE GAME is on rails, atleast after the few levels of indroduction into the game.
I heard alot of bad things about the "rail-space" part of the game from people who were complaining about it, just saw a video of it... and tbh while I see that a game having more features and more freedom is a good thing, but that also requires time and resources and etc, I dont remember flying freely around in a spaceship like in EVE while playing kotor and that game was great.
Neither have any of the other star wars games I have played had this aspect in them, I dont remember space exploration being a big part of the movies if barely at all, they would mostly either focus on things happening inside the ships, showing a camera shot of the ships as they already always know where they are going, or there would be some space combat like the kind we have seen that we will get. So I'm not really following when people say that freedom of a ship in space is a necessary component as everything I've experienced from star wars have never been about that.
thats my two cents anyway, not really a big follower of the game as far as news and such goes, but I probably will try the game once its released.
You are spot on it is not needed at all.... I will jut wait and see unless its a proper universe to fly around in the space element is of very little interest to me.

Sorry to use your post as an excample of what I was talking about in my part of the thread, but here is a prime excample of what people consider the MMO standard to be & SWTOR online is definitly not your standard MMO, again I refer to the original points made by the dev team long ago. Sure elements are there, but it's not what many who played other MMO's will expect and it can't be said enough obviously... this is SWTOR "SERIES" online, meaning take the solo game, throw it online with a longer story , parts that you can group with other players or not, etc etc.. and there you go. So yes, MMO sure, it's massive and it has multiplayer and it's online, but it's not your standard understanding of what an MMO is today.

You shouldn't be able to create your own quests, you're probably bad at it.
"Most quests are instanced", wrong, those a flashpoints, quote it or it's gg, thanks for playing.
Exploration, because you know the way the planets are layed out. How would you consider WoW when it comes to exploration? The quests took me places, It lead to me seeing new things, I explored. I look forward to exploring in ToR as well.
Grouping gives group bonuses, questing with people will give that xp benefit, you're just complaining to complain, or you're illiterate.
Chat with players, same zone. Walk by a player, hey I see you, I guess this is an MMO, want to group? Complain about grouping then bash chatting. Moron
X Wing vs. Tie Fighter was fun. It would be cool to have that kind of space combat around star ships, in my opinion. I don't need to pilot a star ship, though.

I mean seriously? Thats what you want? To explore space in your little ship? Going from planet to planet? Have you seen the majority of space..?Originally posted by jp4lyfe
So many people on these forums, and the official forums talking about how dissapointed they are about not being able to hop into their ship and to explore the galaxy freely. Now to those who just wanted full range of their ship in combat, thats different. I'm talking about the ones who for whatever reason thought they could just fly all over the place doing whatever.
I mean seriously? Thats what you want? To explore space in your little ship? Going from planet to planet? Have you seen the majority of space..?
Rub your eyes really hard for a minute then close them super tight while near some form of light. What do you see? A bunch of black nothingness and possibly faint silhouettes? There ya go, thats space. Thats what you want? Hell, I can make a game that does that no problem at all... People would pay me for that?
But seriously though I just dont really understand why people were expecting this. Odds are the people who wanted that form of space is the minority here. So are the people who are happy with space. All us forum goers, here and on the official forums are the minority of who will be subscribers. It's your every day average gaming folk who will make up a big chunk of the subs and will log in after getting the game and go "wow theres space combat? cool!" and it doesn't matter how it looks because they were never a diehard, back in the day star wars fan and they were never a disgruntled SWG vet searching for those yesterdays and they were never a day to day forum poster cheering and raging about any speculation that comes out..
They are just your average gamers looking to play.... Who don't give 2.. you know what's about how the added space content works. They'll just be happy that it's there at all. And if it wasn't, I don't think it would matter much either. If the game is good, they'll play. If it's not, they wont. They wont pickup a box and go "okay it looks great! ..but whats this..? No free to roam space? RAGE!" /flying elbow drops copy of game and runs out of video store. If thats really your reason for not playing.. then wth?
PS. Sorry for the semi walls of txt. It's 3:30am and i'm not editing jack. Whats worse is I can't even sleep cause I keep drinking ghetto pop called Mountain Fury that prolly gives you cancer.
"I mean seriously? Thats what you want? To explore space in your little ship? Going from planet to planet? Have you seen the majority of space..?"
Yes. Seriously. That/s what I wanted. No, I haven't 'seen the majority of space'. That's what I was hoping EA/LA/Bioware would show me. After all, Eve and SOE managed to do just that.
then go play eve or soe? i mean if thats what you wanted why wait?

most quests are NOT instanced.... You have no clue what you are talking about. YOu can do quests in any number of forms, but like ALL MMO's I have played there is something like a campaign and several side quests.

I don't fail to realize anything, what you and many seem to be doing is attempting to say this game is a general MMO. It's far from it and in the end the truth will be at launch. I think this game will blow all current games out of the water, but then again I am biast as I love bioware games. However, as with my clan I run and all those who are my friends, I tell them over and over, this is not your typical MMO.
The reason is, when many of us (obviously now not some of you ) think MMO, we think, UO, EQ, WoW, and the list goes one. What's the same thing in all, ... see a text box, read it or bah just hit ok, then goto the destination get your loot and rinse and repeat. What SWTOR online is... same thing but cinematic haven! To some, that will blow the major chunckola of fun right out of it. They want to grind grind ,, skip skip and be top dog on day 2. Eh I get it, I use to do it in the UO EQ days, but alas I am passed it.
Point being to all of this is, it's not your typical MMO, simple as that, and to say it is , is being blind and miss-informing people of the game. Sure, go ahead and do so, but in the end your not helping the game any. Tell people what it is, KOTRO series online, if you liked that you will LOVE this, simple as that. If you think it's something other then that, your fooling yourself more then anyone. I think it will be an awsome game! but I am not blind to what the game will actually be.

Update:
Despite my 3am ramble. .
The entire point of this post was I guess when I think of *most* MMOs. I think of the usual you know.. Create your toon and do your quests to gaing access to new skills, new gear, higher content, harder encounters sort of deal.. Thats the base or core to the game. So the mini game space combat doesn't seem like a big deal.
I understand SWG did it
I understand theres MMOs like eve online that are entirely space based pretty much.
SWTOR and Bioware never claimed to be either of those. Not once. We didn't even know there would be space combat til a few weeks ago. I just thought most people would of figured out what type of game this would be from the very start.
And just out of curiosity is it just SWG vets upset by the space combat? Any none SWG players devistate by the space combat? Not trying to hate on anyone just curious.
So you would rather be a slave to rails than have the freedom to fly?
Yes, I am a SWG Vet and the news about space combat in SWTOR is disappointing. But will that deter me from playing... No.

You're right, it's probably better then you're typical MMO. But totally, the mindless bunch of MMO players will not find any fun in tor, good ridance to that riffraff. Cinematics and dialogue continue to be this games filter. Wonderful.
So you would rather be a slave to rails than have the freedom to fly?
How deep is that?
That's a piss poor way of describing it, but yes. I'd rather have scripted space combat that feels like an amazing experience compared to being a freedom flier.

If you think it's something other then that, your fooling yourself more then anyone. I think it will be an awsome game! but I am not blind to what the game will actually be.
I can garuntee you it will be much like any other MMO with a heavy focus on voice over and making a choice. That is about all it is. I am not bashing the game, I think it is good. To think it will be some single player game is just not fact. The only difference in this game is it has a space mini game. It has voice over, and the voice over quests let you make a choice that may effect the out come of the quest. The rest is the same as any other MMO WoW,Aion, etc.
Yes, I am a SWG Vet and the news about space combat in SWTOR is disappointing. But will that deter me from playing... No.
I've seen a lot of people viewing this as a gamebreaker to them. Thats what I truly don't understand. It would be a totally different deal if this was billed as a heavy space MMO ala eve etc from the get go.. That I'd understand but it was never intented to be.
You're right, it's probably better then you're typical MMO. But totally, the mindless bunch of MMO players will not find any fun in tor, good ridance to that riffraff. Cinematics and dialogue continue to be this games filter. Wonderful.
we 100% agree , definitly and you know it's about time we got a game with actually rpg stories It will be nice to pick a path and sometimes unknowingly pick the wrong one! I can't wait
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Eh the whole downfall of this game is calling it an MMO, to many are expecting an swg or UO type of game. This is a bioware title, if you like their rpg's then you will love this, if you don't then you probably won't.
There you go that answers all negative issues about the game from start to post-launch till closing of it. your welcome
I'm sorry but that is only your opinion - it's not an objective fact. I have been playing MMOs for eleven years from EQ2 to SWG to LOTRO to CoX to WoW and many others. They have common features. Now you can spin this is as much as you like but if Bioware/LA/EA don't implement those features or if they implement them in such a limited or radical way that they are not recognisable then, quite simply, it's not an MMORPG - whatever that game's marketing department or its eager fans. I'm sorry, it's just not. Now, as it stands, we don't know for sure whether this is a true MMORPG until it launches - but, from what I have seen and heard, and what I can deduce from my experience, this does not look like a true MMORPG.
I mean seriously? Thats what you want? To explore space in your little ship? Going from planet to planet? Have you seen the majority of space..?Originally posted by jp4lyfe So many people on these forums, and the official forums talking about how dissapointed they are about not being able to hop into their ship and to explore the galaxy freely.
For me having the space around the Planets themselves... the same Planets where the ingame story takes place ... would be enough. All Bioware has to do as far as I am concerned is replicate the "Jump to LightSpeed" experience of SWG and all is good. Those space sectors were not THAT big at all... you went so far and then your sip's computer told you you had to go to hyperdrive or turn around. That would be the limits. EvE Online space is a thousand times larger than that and I don't think that's needed myself. Space done like JTL for SW:TOR would be perfect. This would allow the X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter fans their playground, and enough space for the rest of us as well, in a setting that fits with Star Wars where the Players themselves could recreate their on battles in orbit as seen in the movies. If Bioware does space like JTL it will be, for the most part, a slam dunk in my opinion. IF Sony could do it there is no reason at all Bioware can't do it with all the talent they have assembled for the SW:TOR project.
If BioWare began with space like JTL it would have little appeal. 100,000 pissed off SWG fanboys isn't a slam dunk, not with all the complaining they bring with them.
So if I am correctly following your thoughts... make SW:TOR so that the SWG vets don't or won't want to play it?
It's Star Wars, that won't work.
I am the Player that wonders... "What the %#*& just happened?!" ............... "I Believe... There should be NO financial connection or portals between the Real World and the Virtual in MMOs.
Maybe, but what you fail to realize is that when you do your story you do it out in the open world.
all MMO ahve a story and a plot to follow... if you want... and im sure they will make an awesome story lines here too... but go off and do other things between story line quests... im sick of people saything isnt an MMO... just cause why? they say there going to tell a good story too...? please if ur gonna just complain then dont bother reading about it...
and if anyone can tell me of a POPULAR MMO that did not have a plot or story to it.... feel free... i dare you...

"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
No argument guys on the whole MMO thing, it again has elements, but it is not like anything people have played before and even the devs as I posted earlier made note of such. It is SWTOR series online, that is exactly what everyone should expect and nothing more or less. If you do, you will be dissapointed no matter how you look at it.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
.... All movies are on rails, this is a game.
Freelancer
I already know what to expect, so I don't expect to be dissapointed... I know what kind of an MMO this is, and it aint no GW1. It is like any other themepark open world MMO.

Well it's a good thing they're putting so much emphasis on ground combat, space may be on rails but I seriously doubt the ground game or basically MOST OF THE GAME is on rails, atleast after the few levels of indroduction into the game.
You are spot on it is not needed at all.... I will jut wait and see unless its a proper universe to fly around in the space element is of very little interest to me.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Maybe, but what you fail to realize is that when you do your story you do it out in the open world.

then go play eve or soe? i mean if thats what you wanted why wait?
most quests are NOT instanced.... You have no clue what you are talking about. YOu can do quests in any number of forms, but like ALL MMO's I have played there is something like a campaign and several side quests.
