Thanks Zeroxin and dinams, the dynamic event system in GW2 actually looks pretty amazing, and it'll be interesting to see if they'll be able to pull it off in a multiplayer environment. I also like the ideas behind the Rift system. Those are both "just" ways to make combat, and levelling more fun, though.
I should probably have clarified more. What I was curious about was if anything had been announced in interviews etc about what players can do in the games when not fighting mobs/other players. Ways to affect the economy, in depth crafting, incentives to socialize beyond forming a guild to clear content and do pvp, minigames, etc. Most of what I want is probably considered fluff, but it's what makes MMORPGs worth playing over single player games for me, and for that reason I want it implemented as core features, not just an afterthought like in most modern MMOs.
I'm guessing I'm not in the target audience for either game, but hey, both games are probably at least a year off. If they suddenly look more attractive to me in a year when more details are available, the wait won't be so long, and I'm not likely to get hyped up about stuff that doesn't even make it into the game.

Rift looks like a Warhammer Expansion with the same boring combat we have seen for years. Sorry but had high hopes for the game till I seen the videos. I will pass on that one.
ok i can see u like tera, well, Tera looks like a mix of Aion and... ok forget this, im sick of game wars xD
dond mean to be rude, but if you dont like game wars why start them? after all you did start it. you know, just sayin.
Yes, that definitely got me more interested in the game. Not necessarily because the activities themselves sound great, but the fact that they are willing to focus on stuff that is not directly tied to character advancement and pvp is a huge bonus, and not something I'd expect to see in a game without a subscription fee (though that's true for most of GW2s features).

it was stuff like this and well all what they have showed so far that did a 180 on me. i had no interest in gw2 as much as i do now.
one thing is for sure, the way this game will play out your gonna have to go with a different menality on how to approach it than most of the games we are used to playing.
there was a post here saying that rift combat gameplay sucks... actually i found it in this video very cool, and its only a lvl 3 warrior which doesnt have much elaborated skills yet.

i love that "rush" skill, i was thinking in going rogue, might just go warrior after this
I think i've seen that ability in countless other mmo's inculding WoW. Can't be helped though, it is a nice idea for a melee to close quarters againts their enemies, especially in pvp when facing casters. Looks nice in this vid has that "The Flash" (you know the super hero) effect on it.

I havn't kept up with Rift since GW2 caught my eye so I won't claim to know more than I do. When I was tracking them both GW2 really started to pull away so that I kinda lost interest in following Rift. This video looked like it was going for a vegas affect with the flashy lights and bright affects. Not doing it for me at all......... I have nothing against the game but I'd have to say I am looking forward to GW2 more than any of the other MMO's soon to be released.

rush skill. = charge in sooooo many other mmorpgs that have a warrior class to get close to an enemy. playing that class alot it would be weak if the class itself didnt have such an iconic ability. not showing much. guess ill wait for closed beta or open to make my final judgement on it. im still getting the same ol same ol feeling on all the vids i saw of rifts so far.
guess my fault for playing to many. prob getting tired of that same feel .
Can I get that time machine you guys are using to determine which game is better? Id like to see for myself.
I second this, but the info / videos of Rift that I have seen so far have proved most unimpressive. Though if I had to pick between Rift and Tera it'd be Rift, but GW2 above both, and SWTOR above all.
"The potion recharge time might be more than 5 seconds. I was so absorbed by the battle it seemed like it was just a few seconds. I was trying to avoid the ogres and their pets and didn't pay that much attention."
that sounds fun more than 5 sec recharge
sorry i dont buy it
about potions in Rift i have no idea ..maybe like potions in wow?..and Rift has alota healers and monthly fee
so i dont need to buy alota potions or farm them for every GvG fight
I think RIFT has been given more hype than it deserves,it is basically a dungeon runner that has yo urunning dingeon to dungeon to hit a level cap. When will developers realize the genre NEEDS a realistic world not some race to level cap design? The RIFT portals might be a cool idea, but how it plays out amongst the players remains to be seen.
I also feel GW2 may very well be a decent game to play but imo most people have only given it a second chance because of it's no subscription model, otherwise it may have never succeeded past GW1.
Trying to guess on what one will be better?Well impossible at this stage,as it seems RIFT has very little content but promises to add tons more by release,so there is no common ground here to judge what game will be better.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I have played both Rift and GW2 on the Gamescon at Cologne yesterday, and both look very good. They have vibrant landscapes, good looking characters and gear. I love how in both games the landscapes have interesting vistas and places you really want to see. I had the feeling the GW2 combat was a bit more pleasing to watch, but then in Rift I only had a low level char.
Don't let you be fooled by the many low res vids from Rift made with some camcorder. Such vids really don't do Rift justice. I read it looks bad, because too many cam vids circulate here. Trust me, Rift looks really great in real. GW2 DOES looka tad better, but it's really no bad looking game as some here say.

Only potion are energy pots. There are no health pots in GW2.

so how did star wars look up close. if you played it how was the feel of the game?
yep derailing since im about close to giving up on that one.

I can confirm that. Soloing around a bit with a Ranger (I guess) I never had the need of healing. But it prolly was supposed to be a soloable area. I took over some character which was premade, so don't ask me about the difficulty in the actual game. I just did not have any health potions. But I dunno if the game will or will not have any. The booth was VERY crowded and much wanted, as you can imagine.
After watching and trying it, I think GW2 indeed *may* be a real threat to at least a part of the WOW community. It's fun, it looks good and runs on normal machines.

Heh, wait right there...
Activities and BAR FIGHTS:

They got fluff, if this is what you meant.
This is not a game.
I am still with GW2

Rift > GW2? Yup, at least Rift costs more to the players.
Im honestly getting less interested in GW2, Rift and SW:TOR the more videos I watch... I guess Im just an incurable cynic nowadays.

RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
You talk like a 12 year old and think like one too.
You barely gave a coherent sentence, let a lone a reasonable point.
No one gives a fuck about what you think.
Good day sir.
Rift for me
i lost interest in GW2 with implementing of potions and no healer classes
GW2 will be some kind of potions spam gameplay
and im sure the best potions will be sold in item shop for real $ like in any korean cheap grinders

Guess you missed the thing on potions. They don't heal you... ever.
I'm not sure you've read the impressions but potions have a cooldown and there's only one type: Energy potions.
Potions are not spammable, just read the quotes in this thread here from a guy who played the game at GC.
On a different note, doesn't RIFT have potions?
This is not a game.

GW2 will have a much larger pop than Rift. This i can assure everyone.

TOR looked bland and boring close up.
