Good God. A 9600 with 512 mb ram cant play this game? Thats criminal. The cards may not be new, but theyre not exactly a trident 9550. These cards are still on the market and run most modern games without difficultiy. Thats pretty absurd to say that a major marketshare card would be incapable of running this software. Crysis can run on full medium settings on a 9600 without much difficulty. I hardly think these graphics are Crysis quality.
Im sporting a 5770 1GB card. Im satisfied with it -- the hardware should last a good 2 years. This game is too ambitious, and wants to dip too far into its players wallets to get started. No thanks.

A 9600 should play it at low settings...whats killing you is the 512 ram....thats super low for todays standards. If you are mad that your pc is too old or out dated then you should play a game a little less graphic intense...or buy a new machine...its not that they have jumped up so fast in requirements that people havn't had time to upgrade.
Better graphics = better computers to run them....its always been that way.

Way to skim the post there! Im not mad at all. My rig would have zero problem running this game. 5770 with phenom quad core running at 2.83ghz, 8GB RAM, and a few TB free. This isnt about me. This is about developers wanting you to upgrade your hardware for every major new release that pops out. Fans are going to end up shelling out hundreds, possibly even thousands per household to try to play this game when its needs could have been accomplished on a system with far less horsepower if the code were properly optimized.
I can't seem to figure out to apply for the beta.i went to the site, but it doesnt offer a link, just a close window link.any able to tell me how to DL this and signup?

The area is alredy pre-render in a single player games like Crysis. In an MMORPG, your graphic card is constantly rendering new things like your environments and other players you come across. Thus it's understandable that you need to meet the minimum system req. Normally running in low settings is not a fun game to play. I remember when I played FFXI at low settings, it feel like I'm alpha testing the game.
Also as one other had already mentioned, 512Mb RAM is way too low. The typical minimum RAM requirements is 1Gb atleast and 2Gb when you're running Vista or Win7 OS. Typically when I see a minimum req., I usually double the numbers and see if my system can handle it. If it requires a Dual Core, I make sure I'm running in Quad, if it requires 1Gb RAM, I make sure I have 2Gb, and so on.

512 ram in a vid card is plenty, this is separate from system ram. Know what you are talking about before posting.

I would only say 512mb on card i ok if you play 1600x1200(just about) and lower, anything above could do with the extra. 2gb is overkill unless you play with multiple displays.

This is the actual sign up page to register for the beta. Right now it just gives information but tonight or early morning tomorrow (if you are in EU) the page will be changed and you will be able to fill in your information that SE asks and it will give you your registration key.
What is confusing is the sign up page just has info right now. It's all good. We have all day to get it figured out.
I think the technological point being made is that this game is only going to be run on top-end gaming desktops at this point. That's all well and good, but I'm pretty sure you're giong to exclude 80-90% of MMO gamers out there right now in doing so.
Feel free to denigrate those who don't really see a reason to shell out another $2,000 just to play a particular video game , but that's not going to convince anyone to try the game considering they're probably already playing at least one or two that currently run just fine on their non-hard-core setup.

I spent $1150 on a new computer build that included an i7-930, 6 GB memory and an nVidia gtx 465 1GB video card. So it won't cost $2,000. And really the graphics card is the biggest issue you might have so a simple upgrade is all you need: you can get a decent one these days for $100 or a better midrange one (like a gtx 460/465) for around $200.
I know some friends who did the betas. They all said same thing, the benchmark is way off. One friend has a 3 year old PC, only duel core, running at 2.3, RAM is 2g and his video card has 512 on board. Now I am not sure of the the actual brands of his hardware. His benchmark was in the 1200's. He said the game ran fine. Some studders in city with lots of peeps hanging out but when he was out and about questing, farming, etc.. it was smooth.
Don't go breaking the bank to play the game, with adjustments I am sure we'll all be ok.
This is basically going to be the same exact game as everything else with some updated graphics. MMO's are really pissing me off recently. No unique ideas at all.

I run it decent on a Quad Core Q6600 @ 2.8ghz, 4GB of RAM and a Geforce GTX 260.
40ish FPS on medium settings or 15-20 on max.

Ok so I'm confused. It states you can apply for a code, but don't see anywhere to do that on the link. The Europeans say the 2nd, NA says the 1st

You can sign up for the code later tonight. http://entry.ffxiv.com/na/index.html
Starting on Sep. 1, 2010 at 19:00 (PDT), acquisition of registration code required for FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test will be available.
The time stated is Pacific time, 1900 is 7PM .. 10 eastern.. figure your time zone as needed.
That link is for North America but there is a link to other regions too.
And the reason for the date difference is the time zones. in EU it's 2 GMT.. 0200 or 2 AM.
Well up at 2am for me then!, get a couple of hours in before work hopefully
If I can't run this game at high/max (see pc in sig) it will force me to upgrade again damn it!!!! lol
I downloaded an old closed beta torrent i found a couple weeks ago, it patches quite often, but obviously can't log in.
Hope the version I have works still. Square Enix folder is 8.9gb , does that sound about right?

You could spend $300 ($1300 if you need an HD TV) and play it on the PS3 later.
