The problem is you won't get much objectivity when it comes to things like this. Many overhyped it with their own expectations that it would be SWG 2, or a sandbox game. Others will be proponents of other MMO's and seek to watch this one fail, thus they attack it endlessly. Then there are the fanboys that will not acknowledge any possible faults or failures of the game and retain blind loyalty. However, there are the silent people who sit in the medium (yes there is a middle ground!) and are looking at everything that is presented and not rushing judgement.
All in all I think many people have unreasonable expectations for the game, both for and against it. Most arguments will fall into gross generalizations (WoW with lightsabers) or personal attacks that try to debase the person's argument.
I personally think that if Bioware can deliver the game they are showing, then it isn't overated. A game with a high rating doesn't mean it will appeal to everyone, take LOTRO for example, but what it does is solid. This game isn't going to be for everyone, but then again no game is.
**As a side note, I was at first a little worried about space combat until after I saw the footage and the rationale behind why they did what they did. If you want the hero's version of Star Wars, then SWTOR might be the game people are looking for. If you want to be an inhabitant of the Star Wars universe that isn't bound by a hero's journey, then SWG might be the game to play**
Because wanting z-axis play similar to the design of X-Wing (albiet with the realistic expectation that the controls were dumbed down to "Rogue Squadron" levels) was far too much to ask of a top tier company making a AAA title. Rail shooters died on the PC with Rebel Assault 2, and for good reason.
SWg didn't have space combat at launch. Other MMO's don't have any space combat - or alternative sea or air combat - at all. Get over it.
Other MMOs aren'ty about 'STAR WARS'. Get it? 'Stars' and 'Wars'. SWG didn't have space at launch but it introduced that featurfe within a year and it was one of the most successful things about the game. Even know, with the rest of the game in ruins, it''s the space element that's keep SWG afloat. SWTOR's space element is simplistic and patronising. If the rest of the game is like that, it will be about as much a success as AoC.
Yes, while I must admit, the JTL is really good, but the ground game just sucks terrible. I guess SOE decided to make space their top priority, because that game fails in all other aspects, and even failed before NGE.
'Fails in all aspects'?
I guess you just weren't ready for the sandbox experience. It does require a different mindset to the run-on-rail themepark.
Actually I am a seasoned MMO veteran. I have played MMO's since nexus the kingdom of winds back in 97 and played it well into 2000.... SWG just was not what I think of as an epic star wars experience.
^This.
JTL was boring to me because it was never truly a space sim as the AI had only 1 combat script and you could easily end up in a non-stop turn fest, not to mention most pilots ended up in pre-trilogy jedi fighters or firesprays. I think TOR is doing it right. Why would I want to go into space and see just nothing? JTL never had any epic space battles, even Deep Space was boring. Anytime I had to do something in space for JTL I cringed because I thought of it as a very boring venture.

As some devs stated, SWg was already bleeding 10,000 subs a month before NGE, so while there may have been people that were satisfied with SWG, there were lots more that weren't.
Besides, it's laughable to say that SWG was more Star Wars than SW:TOR is: SWG had no space combat AT ALL at launch, there were lots more jedi knights running around than canon for that time period permitted, and the gameplay as Sungodra correctly mentions was a far cry from the movies, bland and not that much happening - at best, SWG was a sandboxy MMO that happened to be in the Star Wars universe.
Well, for lovers of sandbox games, SWG is still around.

"If you want to be an inhabitant of the Star Wars universe..." This is the reason I will play this game. I played WoW for a year and a half. It was a fun game, but thats all it was to me, a game. I had played Warcraft before, but I had no connection to the WoW outside of that. I really enjoyed SWG, but even though I like the sandbox features of that game, the features of that game were not what made me love the game. I saw Star Wars, in 1977, when I was 2. I have no memory of the movie, but I saw it with my dad, and he would always tell me about. I owned all the action figures, and used to play with my dad. So when I walked into the Cantina on Dantoine [sp], and I heard the band playing, I fell in love because I was able to be a part of a world that I had always had to watch from the outside. There will be games that come out such as LOTRO and SWG that attract people because of the connections they have to the world of the game.
let me just start off by saying this game looks TERRIBLE.... it is a huge hype train that everyone is obsessed over just because the words "Star Wars" appear in the title..
graphics look terrible, animations look terrible... this game is going to be released in 2011 and this is what we get?..
way way way wayyyyyy too much emphasis on "story line".. looks like a single player game... totally not worth 15 dollars a month.
questing looks unoriginal and very much like WoW, as well as combat which also looks boring and beat to death.
space combat.... their kidding right? didnt know this was Star Fox on n64, no exploration no vast space? should have just left it out.. instanced arcade gaming isnt for star wars or mmos.
classes........... wow .... 4 classes per side, each looks incredibly boring..i almost puked when i watched the e3 video of the healer running around casting force heal WOOSH WOOSHHH looks retarded
mark my words this game will fail horribly.. theres going to be zero end game content and no replay appeal... they should have just made another kotor single player game. i see this burning as fast as AoC

This is such a ridiculous post it isn't worth responding too. Totally contradicts the feedback from pax, ignores what they have said about the branching of classed, ignores the steady improvement in the graphics and animations, ignores articles clearly stating that after the demo it is a solid mmo with group play, and I think your comment about it's success will be proven wrong.

His post actually made total sense. He just sees things how they are even if he expressed them in a harsh way. The graphics and animations look awful, actually I don't know where all the money they invested are put into. The only positive thing about this game as I see it is that it's probably gonna be polished at release unlike MMOs of the last few years.

The graphics and animations are some of the best looking ones I've ever seen, the missions are nothing like WoW but you'd have to see what the missions are like by watching in game footage to know that. The consular that was healing is not a dedicated healer class, they were "filming" the action, there are no healbot classes in TOR. Space combat has been explained time and again.
World detail is above most worlds I've seen in current MMOs, the purported world sizes are immense, and there are more planets in this game (and locations) then almost any MMO I've ever experienced. They will have more planets on launch then SWG has total, even after their expansions.
The game won't fail even in the slightest. Even with a 1/3rd of the BioWare PC market buying the game on launch, and only half of that subbing, they'd reach the numbers they needed.

The character models and animations feel like they were taken out from some comic book same goes for the game colors. World detail indeed seems to be pretty good from what I've seen on pictures and videos.
I agree that from your point of view the game is not going to fail, actually it will be successful if it gets enough money to keep the servers up, I guess that's what you are trying to say. However, most people don't really see it like that. I believe that the game will be nowhere near the hype it has gathered over the years.

The art direction isn't something I agree with, at least for human faces which I feel don't look as good as i believe they should. The armor models are very spot on with the star wars feel. The animations look like they were taken from a star wars movie battle, blades clash, you see flips in the air, and choreographed movement. You see smugglers rolling and sliding, and avatars looking in directions of interest. When the AI is working properly you even see them react to blaster bolts and other player actions.
It has its problems, but I think some of the criticisms of the game are either too harsh or unfounded. I think in the early stages this game was overhyped, because we had no information to hype on, and instead of being hyped, people were butthurt that the game they created in their heads wasn't the game that BioWare created. I think after launch we'll have plenty of people to play the game, and maybe eventually that group of disappointed players will come around.
In no way will the game fail, but to those that aren't getting the next SWG, or Xwing vs. Tie Fighter space battles, then this game may have failed THEM.
Not that I feel this game doesn't deserve hype, but I do agree that it is probably getting more than what is deserved at this stage in the game. I suppose it is just due to the fact there isn't a lot of MMO competition right now. I agree with everything you said OP. I don't think as many people are on the ban wagon as you may think though. For example, I follow the game from time to time and try to stay optimistic about it, but that doesn't mean I've drank the Kool Aid. There is a large population of us that don't like the quest-based, gear-centric leveling fest that we are seeing, but that doesn't mean the game will be a disaster either.
Yes it is getting undeserved hype, but it still may be a great MMO. Time will tell.
@OP- It's already been answered why this game was overhyped, but using THIS website as a guage for hype just because it has a hype-meter is a bad idea. I do agree though, on this site, many games get overhyped. Hell, even in general they get overhyped, but that's the nature of the beast I guess. Marketing, word of mouth, ect. go a long way into the factor of hype, but hopefully many players will judge a game when it's released instead of bashing it before.
Whole Star Wars universe died back after all the new series came out from EP1 to now. Honestly you want a SWG Pre-CU experience you're better off waiting for the emulator to release.
Honestly you're better off waiting and trying it to judge for yourself above taking anyone's advice on this site.
Nah, it died with 'The Empire Strikes Back'. The first film was fun, everything since is marketing and pretensous nonsense.
Blasphemer! Empire was the pick of the litter ... everything started going downhill when the teddy bear brigade was introduced in RotJ. Yubnub, anyone?
Because wanting z-axis play similar to the design of X-Wing (albiet with the realistic expectation that the controls were dumbed down to "Rogue Squadron" levels) was far too much to ask of a top tier company making a AAA title. Rail shooters died on the PC with Rebel Assault 2, and for good reason.

'Fails in all aspects'?
I guess you just weren't ready for the sandbox experience. It does require a different mindset to the run-on-rail themepark.
I would much rather fly down a tub then spin circles all day. I had more fun in JTL bouncing off asteroids then actually doing whatever mindnumbing, piss poor AI mission I was presented with. The best thing JTL did was give you a ship you could call home, it also let you skip the ticket purchase.
Sandbox experience...? It was a decent not-to-star-warsy game for its time, but even if it was still in the Pre-cu phase, it would still be lingering around the numbers it is today. Can't help but find it funny that some of you complain about clones, then ask for a clone of an already dead and gone game, ironic.
Seems like I'm the only one who isn't jumping up and down over this game. It looks decent, but definatly not as great as its made out to be. The classes, do not seem interesting at all, typical jedi/sith, troopers and bounty hunters. Now, everyone wants to be a jedi or sith right? There is the first problem, 90% of the population are going to be jedi or sith, meaning every other class will get neglected so badly. Another problem I have with the game is how over powered are jedi/sith going to be? To OP, and every class will definatly not be played resulting in a fail. Now if the jedi/sith are weakened to much to give other classes a chance, that won't have the Star Wars 'feel" to it at all. It needs a perfect balance but to also still feel like you're in the Star Wars universe. Seems extremely difficult to pull off, and I have strong doubts, that they will. Lastly, it just seems to me like it is a mirror of KOTOR, I understand they are different games and what not, but to me, the differences are'nt big enough to where I'd enjoy this game.
If you had done any kind of research on your own you'd have heard it straight from the horse' mouth that they've already worked out a lot of class balance in regards to jedi/sith versus whatever. Of course, there will always be some rock, paper, scissors in an MMO, but you're clearly spewing uneducated garbage. Please do your research. Perhaps you're not excited about the game because you know very little about it.
If you do some homework and still aren't excited, no biggy. There are other games coming out that look great, as well.
The main reason people are so exited about this game is because it's Star Wars AND it's being made by Bioware
PERFECT summary of my feelings.
Star Wars fanatic + Bioware fanatic = freaking excited about this game!!!
I'm as anti elf and sword and wizard as anyone can get...but damnit...Dragon Age was a kick ass game! Crappy sci fi games litter the market...Mass Effect (1 and 2) are the single best games/stories I've ever experienced.
There will be a lot of disappointed people leaving after the first month, mark my words.

I doubt it. There are always people that leave a game after they buy them. They go from one MMO to the next. I know these people.
I think most people know what they are buying here and are very happy with what they know so far. ONce they buy this game alot of the people will probably be more happy with it after playing it.
Overrated Uhm, well OP if you are influenced by fluff on sites like this then may be in your eyes it is. In my eyes looking at the official site all looks well, Bioware are a very professional outfit so in reality I believe they will do a good job.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.
I think that the hype for this game has been kept in check quite well. While the producers have & will tell us the game is coming along well. Its certainly not moving along the same lines as say WAR when they were hyping their game.

I agree, I don't think this game has been overhyped. Bioware releases enough information and does not seem to be making claims of features they will not be able to meet on release.

I have no idea, since they aren't directly talking about eng game content at this point. They only said that they know they will have to have end game and that is something they have been working on.
I guess the same thing will keep people playing this game that does most games. PVP, Group gameplay. Sieges, Raids of some kind.
They know they will have to have something there to keep people playing the game.
IN swg it was the PVP that kept me around for awhile, then they had the heroics they added. I did those until I got sick of it. Once the PVP started to die out and I was bored to death with heroics, nothing was able to keep me playing that game.
Hopefully Bioware has better options for endgame than SWG had.

The problem is you won't get much objectivity when it comes to things like this. Many overhyped it with their own expectations that it would be SWG 2, or a sandbox game.

Doesn't look like a terrible game... just not a good one for me.
That said, it still looks incredibly overhyped. Yet, I get the feeling it will become WoW's equal.
There Is Always Hope!
I have never played any Star Wars MMO.... and here is what I think.
Q: Is this game going to be great on it's own? If it was not SW would be give it a second look?
A: No
Q: Is this game going to be better than SWG post the patch that changed everything?
A: Yes
Q: Does that make TOR much more exciting?
A: Yes
That's my thought having never played or really payed attention to either SW game hehe.

Blasphemer! Empire was the pick of the litter ... everything started going downhill when the teddy bear brigade was introduced in RotJ. Yubnub, anyone?

Mark My words.

Overrated Uhm, well OP if you are influenced by fluff on sites like this then may be in your eyes it is. In my eyes looking at the official site all looks well, Bioware are a very professional outfit so in reality I believe they will do a good job.

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
Yeah but what do think will keep them more then a few of months?
