That number can be easily verifiable through their vendors (WALMART, Best Buy, etc). Also, making a false statement on their financial reports and shareholder publications would be a criminal offense.
So I'd say that it's probably accurate. They'd have much to lose if they were to be lying, and very little to gain.
LOL companies "lie" all the time. but its less about lying and more about covering up the truth
they wont tell you, this game is awesome because this many people are playing it, but they insinuate that to you by telling you how many copies they have sold.
Now saying how many copies are being baught and how many people are currently subscribing are two completely different thing. 3 million could be subscribing at the moment because that number can go up or down, but box sales can only go up, so while 3 million are playing that 6 million boxes sold could become 7 million. So if you wanted to show people how awsome your game is, you go with the bigger number.
Also companies find ways around rules all the time, especially the loaded ones like blizzard.

In general I'd agree with you.
I'm going to lean towards the fact that they sold 5 million boxes of Cataclysm, and assume that's not a lie, and mostly true and verifiable.
Now normally people will eventually stop playing after a box purchase. But it's only been 1.5 months since they sold 5 million. So those people who bought the box, I can only assume, also want to play the game, at least a bit... so they must have subbed for 1-2 months. This would suggest that most of the 5 million people are still playing.
Now it's true lots of people are dissapointed that the new xpac for WOW isn't the "saviour" they were expecting. Sure some like the changes, some don't. Over time many people will unsub again, and I'm sure the numbers playing will go down to something more similar to that suggested above: 2-3 million. But that will probably take a few more months.
My only point was that I thought it silly to say that subs are 2-3mil in the same month as they make 5 milllion box sales. But I will agree with you that subs will probably go back to 2-3 million eventually.
GW 2 is one of very few games that actually do not try to compete with WoW. It is fresh MMO project on so many levels. It can be smashing hit without denting WoW.
What does WoW have? 2-3 million subscribers (real numbers, not propaganda numbers) ? How many dents do you think the game can take before servers start to merge?
In all fairness, Cataclysm is claimed to have sold almost 5 million. Since that happened last month, I'd assume they have at least that many subscribers.
Who released that statement?
Blizzard did. Would they lie?

I didn't realize Wal-mart /best buy would allow me to see those financial records (since I am an average joe, and they are major corporations). Then again, I live in the real world. I see car commercials all day and every one of them is the best selling car in America. I see insurance companies that all say they have better rates than their competitors.
But you're right. A real business like Blizzard would never try to make their game sound more popular than it is so they can lure in more players. I don't know what I was thinking.

All I'm saying is that it would be extremely unlikely that Blizzard would be lying about their 4.7 million boxes sold. That's a number, not a subjective measure of quality. If they were to make a claim like that on their reports -- and it turns out it wasn't true -- then they'd be breaking the law (which wouldn't be worth it).
How many subs do they have? Who knows, but since they sold almost 5 mllion boxes practically yesterday, i can only assume that most of those people would at least try out the game they just spent $40+ for.

Every car company in the world has the best selling car in America and McDonalds has sold every person on the planet 1000 burgers each. Got it.
The rating system at mmorpg is meaningless. I even wonder if it actually does any calculations. It may rise if you give a high rating but if you give a low one it will not move..at all. It should be viewed as what mmorpg want to score it.

It's obviously because it's close to going up a 0.01 rating. More people like this game than not, and even with trolls voting 0 day after day it won't change much. If there's 3k votes, it takes a large shift to change the value.
No, and forever no. There is and will never be a WoW killer because people who play WoW wants to play WoW and are generally not interested or even aware of other MMORPGs.
So the only one that can kill WoW is Blizzard by creating WoW 2 or World of Diablo or something that will directly compete with it, which they wont (atleast not in the foreseable future).
I think yes. This has WoW killing potential. But I think it will not be just this that kills WoW. Perhaps GW2, FireFall and a couple of others can claw away the drones.

I am learning a lot today about marketing!
I'm confused. Are you saying the Blizzard is probably lying about their 4.7 million copies of Cataclysm sold? Are you saying 4.7 mllion is a subjective value, and not in fact a number? Are you saying that they made a typo and really meant 0.47 million sold?
wow is killing itself with that terrible expansion they just released.
Yes, 4.7 million units sold in the first month, plus who knows how many new subscribers lured in by the new content, they're really killing themselves....
GW2 will be an awesome game, but it will not kill WoW. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

It's not that hard to sell something when you spen 110 million dollars advertising it.
wow is killing itself with that terrible expansion they just released.
What so terrible about it, compared to the previous ones?? (only played up to burning crusade myself)
Nothing...people said the same thing during TBC and WOTLK...really don't take it too seriously.
Ah, perhaps I should start playing it again then;) It used to be fun back in the days, both Original wow and the expansion I played- burning crusade! I just got major Irl issues preventing me from playing any onlinegame for a couple of years.... Major ones....
Now, back on track and waiting for the Star Wars mmo I might try wow again meanwhile then;)
This game however, Guild Wars 2 looks pretty nice but something is missing sort of.... don't know what... Something just aint there...:(

Do you have any idea, no matter how vague, of what you think might be missing from this game?
GW2 is actually shaping up pretty well so far. Nice graphics, cool characters, beautiful enviroments and so on... We'll see further how things develops....
This is by far the most anticipated MMO throuout the history! This game will most likely compete with wow, might even kill WoW. Perhaps not kill but atleast step one step above it and look down on it....
Starting to wonder if hype got anything at to do with it...... guess it will get people's attention in the beginning but later on it will all boil down to how good/bad the game really is!

So a little interesting is the hype though!
Hype is not all that matters but a good indicator how good the launch will be and how much people believe in a game.

Silly threads like this one just pain the soul and unfortunately (possibly for the first time in my life) are causing me to lose interest in a game...
Grats to an arbitrary algorithm, I'd say is more apt.
People...people stop feeding the hype trolls.
I don't think it will move much more than between 8:70 and 8:75 until launch.
Hypes are worthless before u try the game at least in beta mode.
I was so hyped about many games and they turned to become trash.
So Gw2 and swtor may be intresting to look after but i dont trust their work till i play the shit out of it and see for my self if the hype is real.

Wont kill wow. I have a feeling it wont even scratch the surface. It will come and go like every other game.
