"We do our best to provide a variety of different objectives to keep players involved regardless of whether they prefer going solo or travelling in a group of a hundred" -Eric Flannum

If that's open world pvp it might take some players from wow... maybe.....!? Even though it wasn't successful in wintergrasp(wow) at the beginning cause of lag issues. We'll just have to wait and see how GW2 will make it.

of course it will.  because we ALL know that games live up to there hype.

  • ErstokErstok Member Posts: 523

Oh looky, a score system that people abuse on an mmo site. Totally a WoW killer if it is new, hyped, and has a high rating. Oh wait, never mind. Just the same old crap, different day.

There won't be open world pvp. The closest to that you'll get is WvWvW in the Mists.

    OH MY GOD!!!!

Enough with the WoW killer shit!!!

I'm no fan of WoW...never even played it...but nothing...ever...in the history of life...in our galaxy...will kill the gluttonous demon that is WoW...

When people say "WoW killer" it makes me want to choke on my own vomit...

You sound really sad when you say "WoW killer"...it's like saying..."I know if I leave this plate of pork chops on the front porch my dog spot, who ran away 7 years ago, will come home."

    PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

    WAITING FOR: Dust 514

If that's what it takes to get people to switch from WoW to GW2 then I'm GLAD we do not have it in GW2.  I'm sick and tired of people saying the game is garbage unless it holds up to their interpretation on what PvP should be like.  I get enough of "people killing people" in real life and I really don't care if you just call it "toons killing other toons" for that matter, I would rather not see ANY form of PvP incorporated in MMORPG's.

well you can't just dumb the main form of competition between players. I think, after playing darts in Divinity's Reach, some people would feel the need for some blood ^^ Great thing about gw2 is that PvE and PvP are separated, so people who prefer PvE only, don't have to do PvP ever. PvP is optional to them.

Its not hard to kill WoW, coming from a westerner, since they only have about 5 million western subs...and that was 2 years ago.  So the point anymore isnt about killing WoW, but which will be the next 5 million westerner sub game, which was probably Aion.

Where do you get your numbers? You keep spouting false numbers all over the place and I'm wondering where they come from so that you can stop doing that. Not that any numbers are necessarily a sure thing. But there are some fairly hard numbers that people use that are officially released by some of these companies and you can determine some information by reported profits.

No subscription game has come even remotely close to the number of subs that WoW has in the west. I'm sure some day one will, but certainly Aion failed hard in that regard. And continues to fail in that regard.

If you want to include eastern markets, that race is at 3.5 million to 12 million in favor of WoW. So even with the east, Aion pales in comparison.

This may seem an obvious statement, but his point is that designers are often asked to make a game that is specifically designed to be “better” than a successful game from a competitor, rather than making a game that is exciting and new. How many designers have been asked to make a “GTA killer”, or a “Guitar Hero killer”, or a “WoW killer”? I personally have heard numerous designers and producers working on unreleased MMO projects describe their game in these terms: “It’s like WoW, but…” I just shake my head when I hear this, because the team that is best poised to deliver a successful game that is an evolution of WoW is… well, the WoW team. They’ve got their thing, and they’re good at it. Let’s all carve out our own thing, and be the best at it. Truly great games are made by passionate teams who are on fire with the notion of changing the industry. If you are aiming at a competitor rather than aiming to make something fresh and innovative, you’ve lost.

http://eu.guildwars.com/press/article/jeffgc2007/  the artickle i always qoute!

with arena-net that much aware of the difference between a wow killer and a daring new game, i just wished that fans would pick up on that !

I have to dissagree with the guy there, Offering somethign new is cool and all but people will still like the basics of games like WoW and EQ when it comes to MMOs. People still like the basics of what DOOM had. This is what I do not really like about ANet, The whole "Every one else does it so we're not going to do it even if its a liked thing".  A new game is nothing more than a new game, kinda like how the Total War series is different from WCIII. How ever people want evolution, I want the next WoW, and I am seeing it more and more in TERA, and TOR than I am GW2. EQ lost to WOW be cause WOW was just the next logical step, not something completely new.

That said no GW2 won't take a large sum of WoW players the same way GW1 didn't.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

Swtor is a bigger threat to wow then gw2 could ever hope to be. And wow killer is such a
Misleading term, only bliz themselves can kill wow. Gw2 fans I'm sure will rage at me but the thing that turns alot of people off from gw1 is still gonna turn many of us away, their awful payment plan. Only suckers really believe this game is b2p, ya but u gotta buy dungeons later too amongst other things. It suffers from the league of legends problem in that it tells you it's free for admission, but to ride anything fun u gotta pay. Many gamers have no issue with a steady sub fee, but making us pay for things like gear, characters, dungeons, skins, etc will never hold. I fully expect gw2 to have roughly the same population a gw1, it will be lucky to be third place behind wow and swtor.

i always laugh when people say WoW killer. thats not gonna happen. no game will come out that will make WoW go from #1 to shut down with less then 1000 subcribers and shut down the next day because thats what kill is game no longer runs it's shut down cease to exist like matrix online. will game come out and hurt WoW yeah some day. ultima online and everquest both top the market once to run today. and since WoW is still rated top mmo on the market i'd say WoW has another 5-10 years ahead of it. and last i checked thats not dead. so what game will kill WoW none. what will kill WoW old age in 2020 maybe.

Can you please link me ArenaNets statement where they confirm that they will sell these things ? And if you're so convinced about SWtoRs superiority, why do you waste your time here arguing about something you're 100% sure you're right.? Or there is a despicable niggling doubt in the back of your head telling you that GW2 might be a better game so you need to prove to others (and yourself) that SWToR is safe by bashing GW2 with made up bull...

If GW2 gets the same sales/population as gw1 swtor will get a hard time beating it.

And you should search Warhammer in EAstore then you will see what surprises they will have for swtor

GW2 will more than likely sell more, but how many people will still play two years out? If GW1 is a comparasent, not that many.

GW1 was a boring game, to me, and I never made it past the free trial, I'm sure GW2 will sell a lot of copies but I still have my doubts if they can retain those players or if they will all leave out of boredom like its predecessor.   SWTOR on the other hand, promises to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, games ever made based on its content, whether they can deliver or not is a different story, but I'm pretty sure they'll outsell GW2 by a long shot, 2-3 million box sells just on Bioware fans and another couple of million on SW fans.  GW2 seems really promising but I honestly can't see any longterm pull to it, I can tell you from experience that random content is not good content, at least to me but I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

In Anets bussiness model its irrelivant if people keep playing GW2 for a long time. SWTOR on the other hand..

Name me 1 playable mmo that offer the same type of content gw2 is going to offer because i like to experience that as well before gw2 is released.

the rest of your post is just your opinion, i have another.

I facepalm and wonder whether the people spouting such nonsense has their brain turned on when they say it. GW2 isn't looking to take WoW's spot, WoW's success cannot be copied, and hype levels doesn't matter if there's not even a release date pinned for GW2.

Lol @ thread title.  Cause we all know that mmorpg.com user ratings indicate how well a game is going to sell.  *roll eyes*

Though I would love for GW2 to be a WoW killer for one reason.  No more "(This game) is going to be a WoW-killer!" threads.

GW 2 is one of very few games that actually do not try to compete with WoW. It is fresh MMO project on so many levels. It can be smashing hit without denting WoW.
